This book is full of ideas on how to decorate for Christmas and make it special and unique. I have so many flagged ideas in this book that I need ten houses to fit all of the ideas from this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves Christmas and Country Living.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas
Overall, I enjoyed this book.It does have a number of pages devoted to Christmas trees in different themes.I would have like to see some close up views of some of the decorations. I would have like some of the other photos to be more close up as well.Worth keeping, anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decorating for mortals who carpool.
This book celebrates style and decorating not fussiness and micro-bustling.
Small flourishes triumph over fuss and muss.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that impressive.
This book has ideas for crafters of all tastes. The projects in this book range anywhere from victorian to country.Although this book doesn't stand-out as a favorite among my collection of craft books, it is wellorganized with nice pictures of all the completed projects. If it wasn'tfor all the clever ideas in the children's chapter (and a few good dessertrecipes too), I probably would not keep this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Variety and diversity of ideas
Impressive to find in one book so many different, easy to make and fun to do, ideas. My children had fun making the painted shirts.Continue with books this fun.Hope you introduce Leisure Arts for The Spirit ofHalloween too!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, very creative.
This book is full of inspiring decorations and recipes.Several decorative ideas/creations would be easyfor children to do and yet still be appealing to adults. There are decorative ideas that would be approprate for the "country" look or a more "formal" atmosphere.I think it's great! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reads like someone's personal notes
This is a book on an interesting (if narrow) topic. Some of the recipes at the end were quite good but on the whole I was a bit unsatisfied with this book. I felt the author just brought together all of her personal knowledge on Swedish(-American?) Christmas and did very little research into how other Swedes (in the US, Sweden or elsewhere in the world) celebrate this most important occasion. You would probably do better to copy and paste bits of information here and there from the internet than to buy this book. It is not a bad book but it is thin and does not seem well researched.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good crafts directions
There was not much depth/background about Swedish Christmas traditions, but I did not buy the book for that.I wanted directions for how to make a Jul Bok and some recipes. In this regard, the book was very good.Clear directions and illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Christmas is Wonderful
This is one of the best Christmas books I have ever found. There is a second one called Traditional Christmas Two that is also very good. They have everything from decoration crafts and ideas to gifts that you can make to recipies for those holiday meals and intertaining.I had both books and lost them in a move and did not rest until I managed to replace them. They are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent variety, something for everyone
I love this book.It has something for everybody. Even people who don't think of themselves as crafty will enjoy this book. And there are so many fun things in it that I have found something that I didn't notice beforeeverytime I look through the book. And it has different skill levels too. There are projects you can do with the kids, or if you are ambitious, thereare detailed christmas villages you can make.Even the recipes for holidaycooking are fun and easy.If you want a good all inclusive book for theholidays this is the one.Another book I would recommend for the holidaysis "Old-Fashioned Christmas Favorites".It has great traditionsand recipes that are old time favorites that may have been forgotten.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book
Beautiful photographs.Instructions are easy to follow and supplemented with photographs.I was disappointed that the recipes emphasize use of the microwave oven.(We have opted not to have a microwave oven). They don'tgive parallel instructions for conventional ovens.Otherwise a great book. Everything from traditional to creative new crafts.I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas projects that are low cost and fun to do!

3-0 out of 5 stars Stodgy
Maybe I have a plebeian mentality, but I expect "bazaar crafts" to be cheap and cheerful, something that could just as easily be a stocking stuffer asan item for sale. This book was dull. The projects are all done with expensive materials with footnotes on how to cheapen them up for sale. There was a great variety of crafts-sewing, beading, crewel work, but they all seemed to have that same 'stuffiness' about them. The only way I can find to conclude this review is by quoting my husband. He looked the book over and said "I don't care for it."

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Great Ideas!
I have an addiction: I am a craftaholic. Also a confession: I don't do them, just read about them. My intentions are always good: to someday get organized enough to start Christmas presents six months in advance and dazzle everyone with homemade gifts. (These are particularly useful for gifts to co-workers when you want something different, but not too expensive.)

Most crafts books are disappointing, I find. They offer very similar items, all with that fake "country" look which I absolutely loathe, or they're caked with sequins and plastic jewels to the point where you could burn your retinas out just looking at the damned things. I will admit that some of the projects here fall into that category, but - and here is my point - many do not. This book has a huge variety of crafts. Looking through I saw at least half a dozen that I'd be delighted to try - and as you may have gathered earlier, I'm pretty picky. Some are simple, some more complex. There are crafts that involve sewing, knitting, crochet, needlepoint, decoupage, candles, Christmas ornaments... you get the idea. Anyone reading this book should be able to come away with several ideas for crafts projects.

The other nice thing about the book is that it gives many practical tips for selling the items once you've made them. Setup, scheduling, display techniques, how to tempt shoppers over to your table... again, many great ideas.

In short, I was very pleased by this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for some good crafts ideas for the holidays (or even at other times; many of the crafts can be either seasonal or non-seasonal in design and color choices). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting on
Quilt a Colorful Christmas is an amazing book!Would recommend it to anyone who loves to quilt and loves Christmas projects. Many of the projects can also be revised a little to fit in for any season of the year. But book came in amazingly good condition and I'm already using it for projects this summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book was a delightful surprise. There are quilts for every different skill level and all of them are lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Quilt Book of 2005
With 126 pages, this book is loaded. There are 39 projects and the authors have designated skill levels for each:19 beginner projects, 13 intermediate, and 7 advanced. You'll see folksy homespun projects as well as breath-takingly elegant ones.Quilts, tree skirts, wall-hangings, a gift bag, table runners, and stockings. Some applique, a few paper-piecing, and even redwork.Beautiful photography provides such inspiration, as the diagrams and instructions ensure success. What you won't see is the "quilt as desired" copout:Quilting suggestions are provided and truly helpful. Some of the items can be made with leftovers from the other projects. How cool is that?I confess that I was leery of the template method for the Dancing Stars Tree Skirt; but, it was just too pretty to pass up.Surprisingly, it came together easy and quick despite the templates and I am so enthused and confident that I may take a shot at cleaning the garage. But first, I want to make the Holly Jolly Basket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book of Christmas crafts.

Product Description
Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the words and tunes of Christmas carols run through our heads, cheering us on and reminding us of the joys of celebrating with friends and family. These beloved songs are the theme for this book, a wonderful collection of craft, cooking, and decorating ideas. The fun starts with “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” a project based on the memorable gifts presented in the song. “Deck the Halls” focuses on using holly in unusual centerpieces and decorations. And whether they listen to Bing Crosby crooning in the background or create their own chorus, families will enjoy preparing a classic “White Christmas” aglow with white decorations and featuring white foods. As always, color photographs and clear directions make every project a joy to create. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I love all the MS stuff! Usually a great mix of beautiful interiors, crafts, and food ... food not my
personal favorite .. if you like Martha, you will love all her books.

4-0 out of 5 stars decking the halls, Martha style
The beauty of this book is in the colors; celebrating the Christmas spirit with exquisite combinations of creamy winter whites, blues, and golden yellows.
The ideas for ornaments, wreaths, and ingenuous ways to wrap money as a gift, are not slap-dash "quickies", but designs for objects that would be kept and enjoyed for many seasons to come. Standouts include the gorgeous Damask stockings, made from vintage fabrics, the wonderful fruit wreath in warm pastels, and my favorite, the "Ladies dancing and lords a-leaping" strung across the fireplace.

The recipes are sumptuous and shown in elegant settings, and very special is the sheet music that has the look of antique reproductions, of many familiar carols.
In the back of the volume there are templates for the many craft objects in the book, making the construction of them simpler, though you will obviously need a scanner and printer if you want to vary the size of the items, and many look like one would want to enlarge them.
As one would expect from Martha, the photography and layout is excellent, with thick, glossy pages. Even if one does not follow the patterns or recipes to the letter, it is a good "idea" book, and it's strength is its subtle color palette, used to great effect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass On This One. There are better books.
Try Carolyn Bell's book, Gooseberry Patch Old-Fashioned Country Christmas: A Holiday Keepsake of Recipes, Traditions, Homemade Gifts, Decorating Ideas & Favorite Childhood by Vickie Hutchins or the wonderful Gooseberry Patch series of books which are delightful.I always love the Gooseberry books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Hard To Make The Crafts
I tried a few and it took hours to do.I guess I need the staff she has on her show.I think you can do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never fake your way through carols again!!!
Though the piano music is not useful for me (don't have a piano), I like seeing the acutal words to the Christmas songs, and believe their presentation in the book, with burnished corners and pretty fonts, greatly enhances the product. As for the crafts that go with these traditional songs, they are a joy to behold, and not all that difficult or time consuming to make.

Martha's books are by far better a product than her "By Mail" or "Catalogue for Living" kits, so if you're interested in putting out some money to have beautifully elegant Christmas decorations like her own, go with the book and assemble your own materials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ornament Making Source!
COtM is a fabulous source of inspiration when it comes to making ornaments. The photos show each project in its final stage, a few have diagrams to show folding technique, and for those projects using a pattern, one is provided (although you'll have to enlarge at times). The projects are great for beginner and intermediate crafters as the directions mostly involve glue, ribbon, beads, glitter and paint. There are a few advanced projects but those mostly deal with oven and/or air dry clay. These are great rainy-day projects the whole family can enjoy because the instructions tell you all the items you will need and most are only 4 step processes. Finally, for those who feel their place is in a hardware store rather than a craft store, there are even projects for you! Various non-traditional elements are used to make some of the lovely ornaments too.Well worth a purchase. ... Read more
