Product Description
In The First Christmas, two of today's top Jesus scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan, join forces to show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. As they did for Easter in their previous book, The Last Week, here they explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last two thousand years around this most well known of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels actually say. Borg and Crossan help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, "What do these stories mean?" in the context of both the first century and the twenty-first century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
love it!we listen to it and my daughter dances around... i want her to be familiar with other languages. this is my fav of all the ones we have bought. it also teaches a bit about German culture and traditions too which i find valuable in fostering a sense of others-centeredness. i want my kids to know and understand that we Americans aren't "it" and that there are very interesting and valuable things to learn and appreciate about ather cultures and people groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a charming little book
This is a charming little book and the associated CD makes it a wonderful tool for learning how to hear spoken German. The songs are well chosen and quite lovely. I was surprised at how many of these songs are also selections on Deutsche Grammophon's "das Weihnachtsalbum" Christmas Album: Original Masters, which is itself a five star choice for any kind of Chistmas music.

I have two small observations: The translations from Greman to English are not what I would call "literal" but rather "paraphrase."But that is not really bad because one should always make one's own translation. Second, I would have omitted the English versions of some of the songs. But these are just "de minimus" observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, the memories!
For anyone who has spent time in Europe during Christmastime, this is sure to bring back fond memories.

This book explains German Christmas traditions with good detail. Each tradition is written out both in English and in German. Overall the translation is good, but centered more on meaning than word for word. The accompanying CD is narrated in German - I didn't realize the stories would also be on the CD so this was a nice surprise.

At first the pages can be a little overwhelming to look at and might be difficult for a child to follow because of all the text, but the pictures are nice and colorful.

The voice of the Woman on the CD is very dramatic with a strong vibrato - Good German style, but could be seen by some as a bit over the top. The childrens choir is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect St. Nick's present
What a fantastic book. I bought one for my children and gave one as a gift.A wonderful book to look at together.Love the included CD too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fröhliche Weihnachten by Linda Rauenhorst

Product Description
This practical handbook for homes and church communities helps to enrich the Christian celebration of Advent through the creation and use of an Advent calendar. Written for people of all skill levels, Baumgarten provides instructions for a calendar made of paper or junk mail, a no-sew felt version, and a fabric version for more advanced sewers.

Teach Us To Number Our Days, however, is more than a simple crafts book. Baumgarten provides readers with a brief history of the development of Advent in the Christian calendar, as well as detailed explanations of the various Christian symbols that can be used during the season. Paying attention to both the Old and New Testament symbols, as well as the Sundays of Advent and the Great 'O' Antiphons from December 17-23, this book is a complete guide to Advent for individuals, families, and churches.

Barbara Dee Baumgarten seeks to understand the relationship between visual art and theology. She has a Ph. D. in Theology and the Arts from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. She is also a quilter, and teaches quilting to others. Barbara lives with her family in Santa Paula, California. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars number our days
This is really an excellent explanation of Advent. The projects are a little more difficult than I really wanted to do, but I am thrilled with how detailed the book is.I would recommend it for anyone who wanted to understand what Advent is and what the symbols mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to celebrate the season
The book guides you through planning and creating an Advent calendar that interweaves the liturgy of the season with your everyday Christmas preparations, giving rich significance to such "menial" things as housecleaning, and serving as a reminder to do everything "as unto the Lord." You can choose from three different materials/levels of difficulty, and each one comes with step-by-step instructions and a shopping list! The book is written from a Catholic perspective, and the calendar is easy to adapt to other Christian traditions. Some days (like the 4 Sundays of Advent) have specific themes, but even the "doors" on those days can be personalized with different decorations and Scripture verses. Other days, you choose something that suits your family -- a school house for the last day of school or a Christmas tree for the day you decorate your tree. Each day's theme also comes with one or more Scriptures, a brief "lesson" and a prayer. For families used to starting the day with a devotional, this puts a different spin on it. For families that aren't, it's a great way to start. I've found a wonderful way of reducing the stress and reminding my family what's really important. ... Read more
