4-0 out of 5 stars Great Song List
I don't own this book but it looks like a very comprehensive volume with easy to read charts and a great songlist. Potential buyers should be advised that, at least upon my first perusal, the song list here is very, very similar to the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs book (the one with the RED cover, which only contains about 60 songs, but all are very good). ... Product Description
The Classic Rock and Roll Reader: Rock Music from Its Beginnings to the Mid-1970s is chock full of entertaining essays to inform and delight you about an era that shaped our culture and future musical trends. This unique book will surprise and enchant even the most zealous music buff with facts and information on the songs that reflected America’s spirit and captured a nation’s attention.

The Classic Rock and Roll Reader is offbeat, somewhat irreverent, ironic, and ancedotal as it discusses hundreds of rock and non-rock compositions included in rock history era. The songs offer you information on:

  • Rock’s Not So Dull Predecessors (for example, “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” and “The Cry of the Wild Goose”)
  • The Pioneering Rock Songs (such as “Rock Around the Clock” and “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” )
  • Older Style Songs Amidst the Rocks (for example, “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Rocky Mountain High” )
  • The Megastars and Megagroups (such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Respect,” and “Surfin’USA” )
  • The Best Songs that Never Made No. 1 (for example,“ I Feel Good” and “ Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” )

The Classic Rock and Roll Reader: Rock Music from Its Beginnings to the Mid-1970s also examines the music which preceded early rock, the music which followed early rock, and the numerous non-rock songs which flourished during the classic rock period. A wide spectrum of music is discussed in well over 100 essays on various songs. Musicians, librarians, and the general audience will be taken back to the birth of rock and roll and the various contributing influences. Analyzing each song’s place in rock history and giving some background about the artists, The Classic Rock and Roll Reader offers even the most avid music enthusiast new and unique information in this thorough and interesting guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea not executed quite as well, but not bad
THe idea/concept for this book is quite interesting. It provides some interesting tidbits and facts about many of the best and most famous songs of the rock era, and some before. While I enjoyed the book, I also found it to be somewhat lackluster in many of the entries, and not as good or well executed as I had hoped for. I should add that I own many hundreds of books on music subjects. It just seems that it could have been much better written than it was. It's certainly worth owning in any serious music book collector's library, it's just not great .... a few steps above OK/decent, in places borderingon good, but certainly not great by any means. As one small example, in writing about "... Satisfaction," the authors talk only about the Rolling Stones' original version, but make no mention whatsoever of Otis Redding's version of the song. Granted Otis' version was not nearly as big as The Stones' but was one of his earliest Top 40 hits, and I'd contend one of his most memorable. While the author's state that one of the strengths of The Stones music was the writing, it seems that this might have been the opportune time to mention the Otis Redding cover. I'm most happy to own it, particularly for the $4.00 I found it for in like new condition in a used book store, but I cannot imagine why it would have ever been priced at $100. Even if it were a 5 star book, it seems like the kind of book normally found in the $15 +/- range. A good read, for sure, just not a great one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented history and survey of rock music.
This history of rock music covers rock from its beginnings to the mid-1970s, providing over a hundred essays on various songs and trends in the genre. Musicians and writers explore the entire cultural and historicalcontext of rock music and provide an excellent survey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must have for any Nirvana fan
Nirvana was an iconic album of the alternative rock genre. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is just short of the music CD itself in fully understanding the album that made the grunge movement of the early nineties so memorable. Taking a look at the early days of Nirvana's career complete with black and white photographs of the band's early days, information on recording sessions, and information on each track of the million selling album. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is an absolute must have for any Nirvana fan who can't get enough of trivia for the group.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty cool book
It tells alittle bit about the history of Nirvana but its mostly about themaking of Nevermind and about the songs. Its pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for a true Nirvana fan
This book gives an excellent account of what led to the great CD we now know as Nevermind. It briefly describes Nirvana's rise to stardom and gives a glimpse into the personalities of the members, but is at its bestin describing how the actual production of the album went.Using numeroussources, the author lets us listen to Nevermind in a completely differentway. The only downside is that it is a relatively short work, and I leftwanting more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Of Its Subject
Through a combination of meticulous research and a genuine love of their subject, the authors have produced the definitive work on Nirvana's most noted album, "Nevermind."The book would be of great value ifonly for its account of how the album's songs were created, but it is muchmore than a simple, annotated sessionography.Berkenstadt and Crossinterviewed nearly everyone who worked on the album, including thesurviving band members and producer Butch Vig.Moreover, they have a realfeel for the Seattle music scene that spawned Kurt Cobain's band, and forthe influences that shaped his music.Reading this account of how the bandcame together and created something new from those influences is similar tothe impressions burned into rock memory of a young Elvis Presley earninghis wings at Sam Phillips' Sun Records in Memphis nearly four decadesearlier, and of the later formation of the Beatles in far away Liverpool. The book, which includes dozens of photographs, is a must for Nirvana fans, but anyone interested in the history and evolution of rock music also willfind it both entertaining and informative.

Allen J. Wiener (Author of"The Beatles: The Ultimate Recording Guide")

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Albums Nirvana Nevermind... a read for any fan
Since the death of Kurt Cobain, the market for books about Nirvana has been flooded with poorly written tabloid type books rushing to cash in and make the quick buck on the unsuspecting fan.Classic Rock Albums NirvanaNevermind is as far from this as possible.Nirvana Nevermind is arefreshingly indepth look at the people and processes involved in makingNevermind. This book is full of interesting facts and firsthand accountsfrom those directly involved. Not since Come As You Are has there been abook this much inside information.Everything from sessions leading up tothe recording of the album to the hysteria was to follow.I recommend thisbook to anyone thatconsiders themselves a fan of Nirvana or even a just afan of good music. -Josh Van Camp President of Nirvana FMQvancamp2@pilot.msu.edu ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Tool
Having been away from the Pacifc Northwest 60's music scene too long, I was pleased to see many familiar names of bands and musicians I knew from those years. At the same time, I was disappointed to see that the late50's to mid-60's music scene in Tacoma was largely missing. This seems tobe the norm for books on PNW rock history.

Except for the standardWailers, Sonics, Ventures, and Bluenotes, it seems Tacoma continues to beskipped over. That is a shame, because Tacoma also had a huge and vibrantrock music scene during those years.I was pleased to finally see morewritten on the Dynamics and Frantics, but only a "mentioned byname" for the Statics, and no mention at all for the Galaxies,Beachcombers, and dozens of other really fine bands.

Still, this is avaluable reference and resource tool for those wanting to learn more aboutRock music history of the PNW, particularly if your interests are Seattleor Portland.Eventhough disappointed in content because of my Tacomaroots, I am glad I bought this book.I know how hard James Bush must haveworked on it, as my research into the Tacoma rock scene of the early to mid60's has also consumed much of my time and I'm not even writing a book(yet).
