4-0 out of 5 stars Deserves More than One Star...
Yeah, I had noticed during a search that this book recieved one star. Well, that ain't fair; I'm going to give it four stars. I mean it's got Brown Sugar tabbed out and is accurate. Vocal track? I don't remember that..See, some people shouldn't do drugs. Ha! And for the guy that gave it as a gift and the punk kid says" you can get it off the internet for free." One, it's in bold print so it's easier to read, plus you get the CD, can't get those free. However, was funny..get the kid coal get time in his Christmas stocking, ungrateful little brat.
Rock on everybody..rock on!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ungrateful Brother....
I bought this for my little brother, who can play the guitar pretty well, for Christmas and was promptly informed that this sheet music is available for free to print off the internet... so I should have just given him cash instead. How do ya like that? Next year I'll give him coal. You can't print coal off the internet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's Simon When You Need Him?
Who at Alfred decided to produce these tracks with "vocals"?It's so distracting listening to the a-tonal vocalist who never quit hits a note that the joy of learning new material is completely destroyed.Stick with Hal Leonard when it comes to guitar play-a-long's. ... Read more

The first time on the open road with Dad's beat-up clunker and a brand-new driver's lecense. That first kiss.Practicing Steve Tyler moves in the garage.Lazy summer days with nothing to do but hang out with a group of friends and the radio.Classic Rock.In Classic Rock Stories, classic rockers reveal the sometimes painful, sometimes accidental, and often hilarious process of creating the songs that you can still sing aloud. In their own words, rockers like Pete Townshend, John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, and Keith Richards tell about the drugs, the pain, the love gone bad, and the accidents that resulted in the hits.
Amazon.com Review
The secret elements that spurred musicians to write songs like"Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Dust in the Wind" areoften, somewhat surprisingly, less than enigmatic. While writing"Sweet Emotion," Aerosmith bad boys Steven Tyler and TomHamilton "got into a big fight" over how to end it; BobDylan wrote a 20-page story that he then turned into "Like aRolling Stone"; George Harrison wrote "Here Comes theSun" while walking around Eric Clapton's garden on a brightday. These tidbits are among the hundreds of anecdotes told by famousmusicians--Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, and Grace Slick amongthem--about their hit songs and compiled in Classic RockStories. If you can hum the song, you can likely find its story inthis book, which is quite broad in scope. Editor Tim Morse fails todate the artists' comments, so it's occasionally difficult to put thetales in context, but fans of classic rock music should still findthis an entertaining read. --Jordana Moskowitz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars classic rock stories
One of the best books I`ve ever buy.If you like rock n roll is a must have...!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I am a classic rock junkie, I love learning new things about the bands and the songs. I could read this book over and over again, its filled with tons of information that is incredibly interesting to someone like me! I only wish it were longer so that i would have more to read!

3-0 out of 5 stars A fun quick read...
...for anyone who likes music. The quotes contained herein are compiled from many different sources, mostly biographies and magazine articles, but I've never seen them all compiled in one place before. Nifty! This book is best read in short bursts, like while on the bus or waiting for the dentist or something. The inexplicable addition of a "Top 25 Classic Rock Album" list in the rear of the book makes for an entertaining read, as all top-XX lists are, though it is inexplicably skewed toward limp boring prog rock. And not one punk album in the top 25? C'mon! There is also a "Jurassic Park" section which is your basic "Where Are They Now" thing, although it already reads a bit dated (AC/DC's latest release is Ballbreaker, George Harrison is still alive...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Writen in One Afternoon
Stories? I don't think so. The "story" behind each song issimply a quote or two. The author didn't want to be burdened with the taskof actually writing anything. And the quotes are frequently brief. The"story" behind Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," forinstance, is all of four lines. This is book is mostly air. And as for"Classic" Rock, I humbly submit that songs like"Substitute," "That Smell," "Treat Me Right"by Pat Benetar have not exactly been labeled "classic" by anyonebut Morse.

I think what happened here is that Morse spend an afternoon onNexus running searches for a bunch of songs and came up with amiscellaneous series of quotes from backdated issues of Rolling Stone. Ifeel ripped off.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gathering
Someone had to do it.

Tim Morse collects the stories (most of them between one and four paragraphs) behind the music. There are some careless typos, and the dates of those who relate the comments are missing, thoughmuch of the info is illuminating. Some of the more familiar stories shouldprobably have been updated or removed outright (Is there anyone who DOESN'Tknow the origins of "Hey Jude" by now?If there is such aperson, he/she wouldn't be reading this book, anyway).

Musicresearchers will like this book because it's a great reference volume.Nowif we can only get Morse to pen a companion piece that includes more blackartists--"Classic R&B and Soul Stories," perhaps? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect
Just received Hal Leonard's "Classic Rock Volume 2 Play along drum issue".
First the possitive remarks: very nice worked out tabs, very good sound alike cd tracks which you get with drums (to listen to) and without the drums (off-course to play along)...as expected!
Greatest miss on this cd is that you have to sing along too with the tracks, because vocals are missing. This makes the whole issue a bit disappointing (at least for me), because i miss the feel of playing along with the complete band. Very strange. If you're not bothered with the missing vocals, this thing is it!!!

Exploring technique, history, musicality and instrumental details, this book covers every aspect of the major drummers of the classic rock era: Keith Moon (The Who), Ian Paice (Deep Purple), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), among others. The accompanying CD features sound samples of the styles of the profiled drummers. Includes historically accurate drum equipment setups. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good basic introduction, but not for the true fan
While well-written and easy to read, the information about these rock drummers is essentially pretty basic: a brief biography followed by a few words on equipment and style. It's interesting as far as it goes, which is not very far. There's not really enough information to give you any insight into what made these drummers so special.

After finishing this book, I was left wondering how the authors chose which drummers they wrote about. It seems to me that at least a couple pretty influential rock drummers were omitted.

Most importantly, this book contains some information that is just plain wrong. The authors should have done a little more research or a little more fact-checking.

The sample clips on the CD are so short as to be almost useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drumming is Their Madness
This installment of the "Way They Play" series is a welcome addition to anyone's music library. The series uses the styles of original professional musicians to illustrate the techniques that made their drumming great. Accompanying the text is a CD of audio examples, a crucial tool in understanding their lessons. For this edition, the authors have chosen not only titans like John Bonham, Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr, but also iconoclasts like Keith Moon , Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell, and somewhat less well-known greats as Richie Heyward and Jeff Porcino, who tragically died when he was only 38.

For this book, the historical context is provided by Ken Micallef, one of the great drum specialists in rock journalism. His breadth of knowledge and experience in drumming provides a detailed yet concise analysis of each drummer's bag of tricks. Using archival footage, official and bootleg recordings, and copious interviews (many of them conducted himself), Micallef covers their early influences, how they sat at the kit, tuning methods, equipment, style, how they evolved throughout their careers, and everything in between.

Though clearly geared towards musicians, rock historians will not be disappointed in this book, as technical jargon is kept to a minimum and the wealth of biographical and musical information will keep even the casual reader interested. For instance, Micallef is able to draw interestingcomparisons to drummers from all kinds of musical milieux, such as the identification of Gene Krupa as Keith Moon's principal forerunner as the "first drum maniac." Also, he often exhibits a propensity for humorous turns of phrase, delivered deadpan, and forthright opinions, such as a passage about Charlie Watts, whose "crotchety feel and slack strokes" nonetheless produce "exquisite, slipping, sliding drum breaks." This result is even more surprising, as Micallef points out that Watts "seems to miss rim shots, his timing is a little off, and he glances cymbals like a blind man." The secret to Keith Moon's style is perhaps even more chimerical, as Micallef advises that the key to playing like him requires "the ability to become very excited, perhaps even traumatized, before you sit down at the kit."

The drum lessonsare provided by Donnie Marshall, a well-known drummer who has worked with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Bonnie Bramlett. On the CD, he plays expertly in the styles of each example drummer, providing audio lessons that are easy to follow and a pleasure to listen to. Overall, this is a great package for anyone interested in rock drumming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential Tome for Classic Drum Styles
Contrary to appearances, this it not an instructional manual for drummers; it is far more than that.Additionally, if you, like me, think that books can't teach as clearly as DVDs, you're in for a surprise here. While DVDs tend to illustrate various "how-to's," they rarely if ever get inside the heart and soul of an artist's style or offer any clues to the unconscious motivations that form an artist's approach. But this unique and easy to grasp little tome presents an intelligent and succinct overview of 11 classic drummers that does just that.Dressed out with a biographical overview, individual gear and setup specs, equipment histories, style & technique, a lesson that includes each artist's major essentials with written examples, and more, you walk away from each chapter feeling you've gained insight into each artist's visceral dimension that you never considered before. The typically dry accounts of technique and exercises found on most DVDs rarely provide that.Musicians want and need more than mathematical analyses, and this delightful little page turner fills the bill for beginners, intermediates, and anyone else interested in discovering that personal something extra that each of these classic drummers contributed to musical history.Ultimately, what we all get when we're inspired by the sound and style of any classic artist, are new ideas about how to approach our own music, and thus refresh and add to our own style of playing, over time.

Profiles here feature Charlie Watts, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Jon Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Richie Hayward, Keith Moon, and Ian Paice, plus this typist's favorite chapters, those on Ringo Starr, Levon Helm, and Jeff Porcaro.

A book like this is invaluable in helping to cut the time and arduous process of "getting the ultimate clue" that always seems like some zen koan that can't be achieved without suffering and madness.Messrs. Micallef and Marshall take a lot of the pain and mystery out of it.Note:Highly recommended for GB drummers who have to learn various major styles in a short amount of time before the audition or gig.

Drummers will benefit most from this book, but it's a good read for any musician.Very highly recommended. - JMM

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on all counts!
Metcalf and Marshall delve deep into the world of classic rock here, with smart descriptions, good biographical information and excellent audio drum examples. Who knew Ginger Baker made his first set of drums from perspex, or that John Bonham's tuning was as essential to his style as his massive groove? The book covers all the classic rock drummers in great detail, with equally colorful and informative drum examples. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars so so
I agree with Val on the uninspired song selection, but my real complaint is that I didn't learn anything useful. Each song gets about one page which is not enough to go in depth on any topic after getting the half page song description out of the way. Ricky Rooksby's other books are way better. This book was a disappointment because the concept has a lot of potential which this book doesn't hit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Val
Wrong songs selection (very subjective author's choice). The selected songs do not reflect particular music periods. A lot of described songs were not real hits. If the only Beatles song mentioned is "Please please me" and the only Led Zeppelin's song "Kashmir" - younger readers apparently will get wrong impression about a lot of great bands and at the same time they will think that guys like Morrissey are cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, unexpected
I bought this book sight-unseen because it was a bargain book and I was trying to get over the $25 free shipping limit (hey, I'm honest). The online description was intriguing enough, but I was very surprised when the book arrived and surpassed my expectations.Physically the book is very attractive, and the low page count is deceptive because the book is larger than a normal paperback. The writer has very excellent insights about the music tracks spanning four decades, and he peppers his writing with biting wit.Definitely recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Insightful
Rooksby does a great job of analyzing notable songs from the last few decades and explains what makes them effective. Some of his observations are funny too. I recommend this for anyone who is interested in songwriting and production, but is bored with the usual "How to Write Massively, Successful Hit Songs in 27 Easy Steps" format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating and riveting window into a world I wish I knew better
Despite being too young to have been a prog rock fan when the canonical prog bands were in their heyday, I developed a taste for prog bands as I became a teenager in the mid 80's.

Reading this book was an eye-opening experience, it gave me an entire framework to consider the music I loved from various angles, both social, and technical. It analyzes progressive rock in terms of the the performers and their influences, audiences, relationship to the 60's counterculture, live performances, music, lyrics, artwork, critical reception, etc.Very comprehensive, easy to read for a layman but with a fairly academic rigorousness which I actually found stimulating and intriguing.

Since reading this, I bought a few other books on this topic, but still prefer this one.The others (such as Paul Stump's book) read more like a history of the bands than a treatment of the genre.

Overall this is one of my favorite books; through it I discovered that many bands and songs I loved were in fact related all along.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just where is the passion?
This book is like an academic thesis. Written in the way someone would write up notes of a physics experiment.

Just where is the passion for this wonderful music??

My main BIG criticism ofAmerican Edward Macan's book, other than how dry it is, that although it purports to be "English Progressive Rock and the Counterculture",it is obviously written 'second hand' from the other side of the Atlantic. For example a book called "Rocking The Classics" about the English 'Progressive' scene that totally fails to mention The Enid once is almost [...]

Englishman Paul Stump's 'The Music's All That Matters: A History of Progressive Rock', on the other hand was , like myself, definately 'there'. It is far more of an interesting read and has a lot of well though and valid, or at least challenging, criticism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite informative
I find this book to be quite informative in the world of progressive rock. It's useful when you want to know how prog rock originated, the sociality of prog rock, why rock critics who have no life like Lester Bangs and Dave Marsh trashed the genre (simply because they live in a fantasyland that rock should forever be just like Little Richard). But I also found a few things I objected about. He acted like England was the only place for progressive rock. Yes, it originated in England, many of the most important prog rock originated there, but it's absolutely ludicrous to believe that the rest of the world did not contribute to prog rock, like the Italian scene, for example. There is a brief mention of non-British prog bands, but he didn't make much of an effort to bring in to focus their works, like Banco, PFM, Pulsar, Triumvirat, Eloy, etc. Also he made it sound like the minute you entered the 1980s, all the analog keyboards were replaced by digital, when in reality, it wasn't until the mid 1980s that the transformation from analog to digital was complete. He does tend to dismiss a lot of the major prog band's works from the 1980s, and often that holds true, try listening to Genesis' Invisible Touch. But he didn't say all bad stuff about the 1980s. The Post-Progressive section actually says favorable stuff about Edhels, Djam Karet, and Ozric Tentacles. He didn't even complete object to digital. He just objected when musicians use digital synthesizers just for solely synthetic sounds just to take the easy way out. There is a bunch of technical terms, as one has pointed out, that leaves many readers alienated, but there's plenty of stuff even the average reader can understand. Just don't buy this book expecting details in to how many prog bands are out there and how many albums they had. Buy this to know how prog originated, what was the social trends that brought the rise of progressive rock, and what brought it down, as well the technical side of progressive rock.

4-0 out of 5 stars Musician looks at Prog Rock
Edward Macan's book is an academic view of Prog rock.Macan seeks to establish the music's credentials, first by exploring the cultural roots of the genre (mostly from an American view) then assembling a cannon of standard Prog classics, then analyzing four important Prog works as if they were serious musical compositions. This approach works. Macan brings a musicians love and a teacher's experience to the discussion.Appreciating just was good Prog was, and why it was good is often not important as the overwhelming musical chops the most famous Prog musicians used - sometimes to the detriment of their music tends to obscure the compositions themselves.Viewed as an extension of the classical cannon, Prog becomes discernable as part of a high cultural continium that intersected with pop and folk styles for a brief span in the late Sixties before it died.

Prog is a middle-class form, hence its dismal by Marxist critics, but as the number of new prog bands and books like this appear, the appeal of the music, the appeal of form over function, of complexity, of ideas, is not dead. One aspect of Prog that Macan gets its the intense religiousity of the music, both in its roots, and in its message.

The best use of Edward Macan's book would be to read it simultaenously with Paul Stump's earthier English history of the genre.

Macan is uncomfortable with the written word; this book is too formal on occasion, leavening the insight with academic style, which is why I did not give it five stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good scholarly approach to the music itself, but...
...when Macan gets around to the anti-prog groundswell of the late '70s/ thru the '80s, he goes into a lot of detail to explain what can be put a lot more simply. Or maybe narrowed down to one nationality--mine. The "art rock is an abomination" mindset came from the American belief that art is art and entertainment is entertainment--the one should not be confused with the other. Art is tedious and entertainment is fun, so when you fuse an art form with an entertainment form, you make tedious what was supposed to have been fun. Macan missed that point entirely, so there was no way he could have made the argument that a lot of us wish we had thought to make 25 years ago--we listened to progressive as an entertainment in the same way we also had Rolling Stones albums in our collection. And as such, I still do. I didn't read music back then and I still can't--as an "artsy-fartsy" snob, I'm a poor example. To me, the younger generation of progressive as represented by Spock's Beard, Dream Theater and Echolyn are just as valid as anything I still own by Gentle Giant, ELP and Yes. That's one point that Macan should have made as well (if it occurred to him at all)--that a lot of us of the original fan base of progressive had fun listening to it, as I'm sure the artists had fun playing it. ... Product Description

For forty years, collector Rob Roth has gathered rare examples of rock tour posters, advertising posters, rock memorabilia, original artwork and items of merchandise. His spectacular collection is so vast that it has never all been put on public display, but when visitors to his spacious New York loft apartment—visitors like Elton John and Alice Cooper—caught a glimpse of some of the material Roth has collected over the years, they were amazed and urged him to let rock fans see the dazzling array of artifacts. When designer John Varvatos saw the collection, he was so stunned by it that he begged Roth to lend him pieces for his new store in Las Vegas. More of Roth's pieces will be on display in the Varvatos Soho store and other upcoming locations in the fall of 2010. Varvatos has even offered to host a launch party in the Soho store for the book at its time of publication.

For many, the items lovingly cataloged in the pages of The Art of Classic Rock will evoke nostalgic memories of their youth—of blazing lights, drifting smoke and of the all-pervading power of their favorite rock concerts. Unlike anything else on the market, The Art of Classic Rock is a lavishly produced presentation of the most vivid and exciting artwork from the rock world, as well as a guide to understanding the the most influential rock banks of our time.

Each section of The Art of Classic Rock focuses on a well-known band, covering its defining tours and albums to show how the band's iconic designs and graphic styles changed, and to provide an overview of rock history from the period. An introduction to each section puts the images in context, outlining the stage the band and its acts had reached in their development when the particular images and designs displayed were used, and discussing the art and artists behind the work. Each piece of art also features a caption describing exactly what it is, while items with a particular story are accompanied by longer, more detailed text.

The Rob Roth collection has been meticulously photographed specifically for this book by photographer Richard Marot who spent hundreds of hours working with a team of technicians to ensure that the images appearing in The Art of Classic Rock are a sumptuous and accurate representation of the truly stunning Rob Roth Collection.
