Product Description

Quirky melodies, flamboyant style, and unforgettable vocal harmonies made Queen one of the most iconic bands of all time. This series of photographs documents the spectacularly productive artistic relationship between Mick Rock and Queen during the 1970’s. Hailed as “the man who shot the ‘70s,” Mick launched his career chronicling the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust, and moved on to photograph Lou Reed, the Sex Pistols, and Queen. Through more than 250 images from his vast archive, follow Mick from Queen’s watershed gig in London, through to the legendary free concert in Hyde Park. Fascinating anecdotes on his time with the group provide a comprehensive portrait of one of the world’s great bands at a pivotal time in their career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock Fakes, not Fake Rocks
As a group, I like the Hal Leonard fakes. Tasteful chord changes, melody score, and lyrics. I would also say they exhibit good song selection, although there are always songs that never seem to make it into any of these collections, and others that seem to be in multiple books. I wish it were possible to buy some set of books and just get ALL the songs, so we could own a legal set, nicely bound, etc.

Another small but good point about this particular book is that the plastic comb is a little larger relative to the number of pages, so it should hold up over time, and not bend the pages when opening to a particular page.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Happened to Steely Dan???????
This is still a nice collection of classic rock tunes. However....if you're a Steely Dan fan like me, be aware that the Steely Dan tunes that appear in the table of contents on web site are NOT ACTUALLY INCLUDED IN THE BOOK. Big disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is how a fake book should be organized
I'm a professional musician.I play a wide range of types of music, including alot of standards from the 40s and 50s.However, I was wanting to get more 'hits' from the 70s.After searching extensively online and in stores, I settled on this book and, so far, am happy that I did.I like that no song is more than two pages long. Most are only a page length. As a musician, this means I don't have to turn pages, especially when sight-reading a tune. The tablulature is clear and fairly easily readable though I'd prefer that most tunes would spread across two pages so that the print could be larger (especially as I grow older and now need reading glasses).I'm 50 years old and most of these tunes are very familiar to me.The arrangements are quite good (often including little riffs or fills that help define the tune). My copy has a plastic comb which makes it open and stay open easily.I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Fake Book, 2nd Edition
I bought this item as a gift for my husband, and he is very happy with it...would definitely buy it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Collection but beware Small Printed Pages
This fake book has many hits that I would love to be able to play.
But this sheet music has such tiny printing that it makes the notes and key signatures dificult to read.
I would have given this book 3 more stars if it had have the songs and bigger print. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unimaginative
This book claims to be geared to the intermediate player but it feels like a beginners fingerstyle book. (If this is what passes for intermediate then I'm a guitar God!) No slides, few hammer-ons and certainly no harmonics, things that I don't think are just for advanced players, but sound good and give subtlety and feeling to a song. What this book offers are mostly spare boom-chick arrangements. I've noticed that the Hal Leonard Corporation is constantly removing tabs from the internet that infringe upon their copyrights, but then sell crappy arrangements like these. Since Hal Leonard seems to own the rights to every popular song put out in the last sixty years, I guess this is the best you are going to get. Personally, I think they should sell their back catalogue to Mel Bay, a decent sheet music company. (P.S. Dust in the Wind is actually done pretty well, but you probably already know that song.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic arrangements of classic tunes.
I have studied two songs in this book and I have thoroughly enjoyed both of them. This book is not for beginners, but very attainable for the novice student. It is a real challenge to adapt a song with vocals, keyboards, guitars, drums, etc. to a fingerstyle guitar solo, and this book does the job admirably. I might have selected some different songs, but there is enough variety here that any fan of classic rock can find something to play. The selections represent many different styles spanning a wide timespan, with selections that contain interesting melodies and harmonic elements. I was somewhat disappointed with how some passages were handled, but as an amateur arranger myself (for piano and voice) I can't say I would have done a better job...as I have said it is difficult to translate a rock band number to a single solo instrument. More difficult than taking your favorite novel to film - you can enjoy both, but know that one is not capable of mirroring the other. Had the arrangers slavishly adapted the songs true to their original content, they might have come up with something unnecessarily difficult to play and cumbersome to listen to. I would recommend this book to any guitarist who enjoys classic rock. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth $9
This book does not picture the classic well-known rock covers, it shows the pop, the everyday average vinyl disc cover of XX century. Just to see... candy for the eyes. That's what makes this book interesting.

As a Graphic Designer I'm not particularly interested in rock covers but I think the last review was pretty unfair.

Anyways this is definitively not the definitive book on rock covers.

1-0 out of 5 stars taschen getting hard up?
plain and simple this book SUCKS . it's a totalwaste of paper.
i got it as a gift from a friend who knew i was both a record collector and designer and from both points of view all i can say is : YAWN.
the covers are chosen totally randombly by "theme" rather than by graphic interest or collectability/importance of the record.
the resut? lots of mediocre records with mediocre cover art that fit into tacky, unimaginative spreads( oh naked lady covers! ohcovers with cartoons! oh covers with bad 80's makeup!)
the intro shows the author with his record collection but REALLY taschen should have paried him up with a rock-art expert.
there is no reason at all anyonewould enjoy this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Shortage of books like this
This is an excellent resource for keyboardists.I'm still working through all the songs, but the transcriptions seem to be nearly completely accurate (though they left out Ray Manzarek's comping during the guitar solo in Light my Fire), and generally include all significant keyboard parts and occasional guitar/bass and horn lines. Most of the songs are not too challenging, save for a couple of solos; still, they are mostly fun to play. For me, growing up in the 80's and 90's, this book also serves as a good introduction to important keyboard songs from the 60's and 70's (as well as 80's).The songs cover a fairly wide range of styles, from piano pop to prog rock.

One word of caution - the Amazon introduction lists 'November Rain' and 'Layla' as part of the contents, but neither are included. The above reviewer's 'table of contents' is correct.

My one major complaint is the binding - as another reviewer mentioned, spiral-bound would be more helpful. Also, while no list of songs could ever be exhaustive, there are some major 'keyboard prominent' bands/artists missing (even considering the focus on pre-90's) - Yes, ELP, and even Elton John don't make it in (two by Billy Joel, but none by Elton John? must be an oversight). However, I am encouraged by the addition of other books in this series (R&B, Pop, etc) and hope this will lead to more collections of authentic keyboard transcriptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Collection Ever!!!
The collection of songs is absolutely terrific. The notations match the original work perfectly. The only improvement would be to make the book a spiral bound one for the ease of turning pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Not to Like?
This book is exactly what it says it is!...note-for-note transcriptions of a handful of rock and roll classics. And the transcriptions are excellent. How can you not give it 5 stars?? There is NO WAY to play the original recordings more accurately - it's indespensable -- unless you have a super human ear, can memorize anything, and don't need to read music. My only complaint, which has little to do with this particular book, is that we need a whole lot more books just like this one, with more of the great keyboard hits we have come to love to perform. Please make more!!!I play part-time and don't have the time to transcribe everything I need in my repertoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the tunes

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing song

If you are not interested in Hard to Handle then I would recommend this book, otherwise look for another book. ... Read more

Product Description
For forty years Rob Roth has collected rare examples of rock tour posters, advertising posters, rock memorabilia, original artwork and items of merchandise. His spectacular collection is so vast that it has never all been put on public display but when visitors to his spacious New York loft apartment - visitors like Elton John and Alice Cooper - caught a glimpse of some of the material Rob has collected over the years, they were amazed and urged him to let rock fans see the dazzling array of artifacts from the 70s and 80s. For many, the images lovingly cataloged in the pages of this book will evoke nostalgic memories of the blazing lights, drifting smoke and all-pervading audio power of the rock concerts of their youth. It is also, however, a lavishly produced presentation of some of the most vivid and exciting artwork from the rock world featuring bands such as The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin and every other major rock act of the era. Each section of the book features a particular band covering different tours and different albums to show how design and graphic styles changed and to provide an overview of rock history from the period. An introduction to the section puts the images in context, outlining the stage the bands and acts had reached in their development and discussing the art and artists. Each piece that is portrayed carries a caption describing exactly what it is, while items with a particular story to tell are accompanied by longer, more detailed texts. The collection has been meticulously photographed specially for this book by leading photographer Richard Marot who spent hundreds of hours working with a team of technicians to ensure that the images appearing in "The Art of Classic Rock" are a sumptuous and accurate representation of the truly stunning Rob Roth Collection. ... Product Description
Keyboard Presents: Classic Rock brings out the stories behind the hits on drive-time radio, as told by the keyboard-playing artists and sidemen who created them. What was Billy Joel thinking when he wrote "Piano Man"? Who played the pounding piano on the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove"? What was it like to back up Jim Morrison in the Doors? How did synthesizers create the sound of Genesis? It's all here: the gear, the songs, the road stories, and the inspiration behind some of the greatest songs of the '60s, '70s, and '80s by Chicago, Deep Purple, Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers, Blood, Sweat and Tears Steve Winwood, the Grateful Dead, and many more. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
The book itself is kind of cheesy, and that misidentified photo is a big embarrassment. However, no true Joni fan should be without this book, mainly because of the wide array of interviews it includes with Joni over the past thirty years. While the critical reviews and articles are mildly interesting, the real joy lies in reading Joni's own words from her interviews. In reading them, the Joni fan is bound to feel as though they have gotten to know her even more intimately than through her music.

5-0 out of 5 stars the RLJ pic in the JM book
I have elsewhere reviewed this book, and praised it.I see that this book is slammed because one picture of Rickie Lee Jones is identified as Joni Mitchell. That is not a reflection on the author but on the publisher. The printed material in the book is Luftig's great labor of love and compliation, great coverage of Joni's career. The publisher slapped in a few pictures and the publisher, not the author, is responsible for the mistake in identifying who is who in the picture. Then again, the publisher spelled Stacey's first name wrong on the book cover.I should add that I do not know Stacey Luftig but I admire her work, and it is unfair to blame her for mistakes that were not hers. The book itself is a rich resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars sorry
After thumbing thru the book and seeing a picture of Bonnie Raitt and Rickie Lee Jones singing at Farm Aid 1 (singing Angel From Montgomery I know I was there) and the picture labeled as Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell I lost all respect for the book and the editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I've always wanted
What a great idea to compile reviews and articles about Joni Mitchell! I've saved a pile of clippings myself, but none cover the breadth and depth of what this book does. It is truly an achievement, and I thank the authorfor doing such a fine job. I know Joni Mitchell's songs "insideout", and now it's great to know their background, as well as otherpeople's views. I got lost on the guitar tuning section, but I'm suresomeone out there will appreciate the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched
This book was a dream to read. The detail was graeat and set out a clear summary of the life times and, crucially, the artistry of the the incomparible Joni Mitchell. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wild Thing: Muscle Cars & Rock Classics
It was a good idea music with the book. What I didn't like about it that made me give it only 2 stars; They didn't give you very much info next to the pictures of the cars. Some pictures of the cars they had go across 2 pages.I don't care to look at acar split in 2 like that. Some ads from that time.As for the music, I only knew half of the songs. Maybe some of them were before my time? There is 4 disks, but I was hopeing for more car songs. No Beach Boys.I didn't keep it for my collection of car books.I sold it. ... Read more
