5-0 out of 5 stars Metal clay in a nutshell.....what a book!
The book clarifies questions that you wanted to know about creating metal clay and getting started on your own.Saying very complete, means just that, now you can feel confident on your own or when you go to your first class.
Lovely complete illustrations with words that explain the process. Thank you for all the hours you and your editors worked to produce this comprehensive book on Metal Clay.
Metal clay will satisfy silver makers that do not have the time to silversmith hard metal, and those that do, can incorporate the two skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't praise it enough!
I have been working with polymer since last summer, my only teachers being books, of which I had about 10 before buying this one. As it was published in 2002, I hesitated to get it, but am I glad I did! Most of my previous books were inspiring and/or useful in one way or another, but this one and the two I bought that were written by Donna Kato have made me feel the caring of true teachers. They know how to put themselves in the student's place and explain in an understandable way.

Here are a few of the many things I learned from Ms. Hughes:
-TLS is so resilient that it can be used as the spine of a book.
-How to use Cernit clay together with Fimo to get the best out of both.(There is a lot here on the different properties of the different clays, though nothing, alas, on Kato polyclay, which I gather was not yet on the market. I did learn why my Premo pieces often chip when I drill them and what to do to prevent it.)
-Use a drop of mineral oil in the metallic wax Treasure Gold when it begins to get too stiff to control well (This is a problem I had been having lately, so the advice was doubly welcome.).
-The name of a quick cyanoacrylate glue that allows 10 seconds during which you can reposition delicate objects; this is longer than you get with Zap-a-Gap.
-That it is generally best not to varnish imitative pieces, which would spoil the aged effect that develops over time in real ivory, turquoise, etc. Instead, polish and buff.

I could go on and on just listing things I have learned about general technique, materials, tools, and the care of tools, but I urge anyone who is serious about polymer to get this book, because it is really wonderful in almost every way. I found almost all of the numerous pictures of polymer art thrilling and inspiring, and needless to say, the explanations of how to imitate a number of natural materials very helpful. I can't wait to try the amber!

If I could have asked more of this book, I would have liked a more comprehensive list of suppliers for the various materials and tools, but it does have a longish list of books ranging from polymer clay to various art books, including some great resource books for ethnic art.

As others have mentioned, this book may be a bit too much for complete beginners, but I think it would be an important addition to the book collection of anyone who seriously wants to develop his/her polymer claying abilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
Victoria Hughes is clearly well experienced at polymer techniques and a master teacher. Her book is organized well, good pictures, excellent instructions, beautifully written. My favorite part, however, is the beginning chapters in which she discusses the creative process and how to approach your experience with the the clay as a true artist, regardless of your experience level. Her book is my favorite on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charasmatic Classic
This book shows a whale of a lot of timeless information about how to work with polymer clay. Topics include: clay itself; fundamentals, procedures, techniques for working with clay; the nature of color; color mixing; tools and molds; materials commonly (and not commonly) used with clay; aspects of design; more. Ms Hughes gives clay recipes and gives projects. Directions tell the `how' and include the `why' for details so that I can catch the principle and remember it.

Having spent hours and hours and hours reading on line at the major polymer clay sites, there are a couple of names that stand out. One is Judith Skinner for the now ubiquitous skinner blend. The other is Victoria Hughes for these "imitative" techniques that produce wonders of translucence and style.

I originally got this book when it was first published. I lent it to a friend who didn't return it. I got another one; ditto. Several copieslater, I gave my copy-of-the-moment to my grandson. I forgot that I'd given it to him, and so looked all over the house for it... repeatedly. At last, I've gotten another copy. This is a classic that I refer back to time and time again. To say this book is `good', would be like saying that Obama is a `pleasant' man.

1-0 out of 5 stars Puzzled
I can't understand why this book has such rave reviews. This is the reason I purchased it but was very disappointed and sent it back.I think it is a waste of money and maybe my view is based upon the fact that there are so many good polymer clay books that followed this one.If I hadn't sampled these newer books maybe I would be like the other consumers here, giving it five stars. In all honesty, save your money for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Victoria Hughes is the best!
Polymer: The Chameleon Clay was the first polymer clay book I bought. It's not really geared toward beginners, but I've never been afraid to jump in with both feet. I'm glad I did! Victoria Hughes is a pioneer in making polymer clay look like just about anything. While I've since seen alternate techniques that make creating faux bone or stones simpler, I've never seen an technique that does it more realistically than hers. I regret I've never had a chance to take one of her classes.

In addition to the wonderful techniques for mimicking other materials, this book is inspirational. It showcases wonderful art or Hughes and a number of other talented artists. Exciting techniques, a wide variety of projects and beautiful photography combine to make this book remain one of my favorite books on polymer clay--and I now have quite a library of them! ... Product Description
Specifically designed with the tween (8–12-year-old) girl in mind, Clay So Cute! shows how one of the easiest mediums—polymer clay, which need only be baked in the oven—can be sculpted into quick, simple, totally fun jewelry and accessories.

Given our proven track record in selling polymer clay DIY books to the adult market, and Haab’s wide fan base and successful previous books, Clay So Cute! will be an instant success with girls (and their mothers and grandmothers) looking for projects that are more sophisticated than “kid stuff,” but trendier and more age-appropriate than the pieces in adult clay books.

Using simple, step-by-step illustrated techniques, few tools, and updated colors to make tween-friendly projects like mini-cupcake charms, robot key chains, polka-dot ponytail holders, Japanese-style animals, and a wide assortment of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, Clay So Cute! is a sweet discovery for tween girls. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic ideas for boys and girls....and mom!
We gifted our seven year old daughter four yearwith a kit filled with polymer clay and a toolkit. This book was included and has been such a hit!Our favorites have been the bottlecap pendants and the claybots (our four year old son loves these!).The instructions are very clear, and I like the way it shows how much of each color clay to use for each project (it shows you a dot and says to get a ball of clay the same size).
I appreciate that each project introduces techniques that can be applied to her own ideas (like using a tool to apply a texture, or marbleizing colors), and that the finished products are actually cute, useful, and hip, rather than being too grandma (with no offense to grandmas :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Place to Start
I selected this book to get some background information, as I have never worked with polymer clay. There is some excellent information about using the clay, and I learned much about the medium.I probably won't be making anything from this right away, but I am glad to have it as a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Follow Instructions
I am quite an amateur at polymer clay but this book really helped me come up with some interesting projects. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow.I recommend this to all polymer clay fans!!!! Thumbs up from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MORE HELPFUL BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT OUT THERE.
I found this work to be most helpful. It provides step by step instructions and is great for the beginner. The book is full of designs for use with Polymer Clay and is quite detailed. The photography is great and quite clear. The text is full of helpful hints and tips as to techniques that are easy to follow.I also enjoyed the great ideas for projects I gleaned from this work. One of the strong areas of this book, unlike some others I have in my collection, is that the author does not assume that you already know something and goes ahead and explains even simple steps. The only weakness I found was that some of the information is just a bit dated as so much progress has been made in this field over the past two or three years. This is not a big problem though as there certainly is no "bad" information. This is a good one to add to your collection as it is nice to have on hand to answer questions as you are working. It is also a very handy book to have if you happen to be teaching a course in working with Polymer clays. The instructions here can be worked into a lesson plan quite nicely.Highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book to teach canes and give examples
The author shows how to make canes and that is pretty much all that is in this book. Not much if you are looking for other techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great polymer clay tips and techniques
I'm new to using polymer clay and am on the look out for new ideas and techniques that I can follow exactly or add my own twist. This book has great projects with good "how-to" instructions.Definitely one of the better books I've purchased. And it's interesting to see what different jewellery artists' create with polymer clay due its awesome versatility.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
I have had so much fun using the techniques in this book, and I haven't even gotten 1/3 of the way through.I wasn't sure I would like it as well as Donna Kato's book on surface techniques, but I have actually found it easier to work with.Perhaps it is a question of aesthetics - I really like the author's color schemes and design sense.Would definitely buy this book again!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Some interesting concepts. Seemed a bit too project orientated for me personally but learned a few things and interesting to see her process.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book I've been looking for!
If you wonder how polymer artists create all those incredible, minute details and delicate shading read this book. Ms. Bananto's designs may or may not be to your taste, but (hey, we're all different) the secret of HOW she achieves them is relevant for anyone who wants to develop such skills. Basics and general information are well written too. Good work, lady.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great PC jewelry book. Love it.
Basics were covered well and her basic canework instructions (18 canes) were perfectly photograhed and explained.Considering I'm the visual, put things together by the diagram alone kind of person, I'm picky about photo demonstrations in clay books. There never seems to be enough.I think I could make up every cane solely instructed by photos in this book.

The projects include typical sliced beads, rolled beads, image transfers, a really cool fidget pendant and much more. She also includes the jewelry making steps as well as the clay making.

I especially enjoyed the color palette section (inspirational fabric samples) and the color palettes supplied at each project. That's a tip I will use regularly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice variety of ideas
This book offers some great projects and techniques. The pictures are beautiful and very detailed. The written instructions are very well done and easy to follow. The projects use many very simple techniques to create rather elaborate pieces that are very colorful and fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best instructions
I own 10 polyclay books and have read many others. This is the best for instructions -- sometimes with pictures of every step.I liked the "ethnic" aspect because it's different from other books.-- probably easier for a beginner to make these projects look good, compared to some fancier or classic designs.Enormously helpful and applicable to any style of jewelry you prefer to make.
Ms. Jackson clearly has lots of experience teaching the techniques so she doesn't skip details of the process that can really trip you up.
This book tells you how to do practical finishing-- such as getting the elastic inside a bangle bracelet; such as how to attach two pieces together for a pendant; such as crimping wire in the clay before curing -- detailed explanations, with pictures, of how to securely attach a "finding".So many books tell you how to make canes--but not many show how to sand and polish.
Other books may be great eye candy but can lead to frustration as you try to duplicate the project.I need the step-by-step of this book if my pretty surfaces aspire to being real, wearable, useable objects or jewelry.
Incidentally also has projects using transparent liquid clay medium -- "cloisonne" pins -- tells how to laminate metal leaf so you can cut it up etc. for projects. Section includes instructions using Kato liquid medium as well as Sculpey TLS.Seems up to date in 2007.

Nice to see fingers of person of color in illustrations.Actually, nice to see fingers period because it helps understand the steps.
My only mild complaint is the artist uses too many non-polymer trinkets attached to some projects--looks good but not always available to me.On the other hand I really am freed up by the idea of attaching feathers, and now I know how!
I would have enjoyed more projects too. This author is tremendously welcome to the pantheon. And I hope she has another, longer book in the works.
PS if you want to do tiger or leopard skin patterns, it's here.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
Debbie Jackson shows such wonderful style with her jewelry. I love the way she combines other media with polymer clay to create distinctive jewelry.

She really sparked my imagination! From her I learned the elegant look that can be achieved from layers of different textures and unexpected materials (such as cowrie shells and feathers).

This beautiful book with its gorgeous, huge photos will remain in my polymer clay library for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cut above the rest
This is one of the most detailed books I have seen. Her projects are refined and this is the first time I have seen the back of jewelry pieces finished as well. This gives the projects a more polished and professional look. Like one of the reviews already stated, don't shy away from this book, because of the term "ethnic". There is enough really good information in this book, even if that is not your style. This book is refreshingly different and I currently have it from the library. I am going buy this for myself - a must have!

Product Description
When the well-known wood carver, Tom Wolfe, turns his talents to a new medium the results are wonderful. The almost limitless medium of polymer clay and Toms eye for character and caricature combine to produce some endearing and delightful creatures. For years Tom has been using clays as a modeling tool for his wood carving. At the same time, though, he has created some characters in clay that are just meant to stay that way. The polymer clay comes in a variety of colors and can be shaped in almost any way imaginable. For those thousands of hobbyists and artists who use polymer clay, this new book will open new doors of expression. So, for woodcarvers and clay modelers alike, this is a welcome new book. Fully illustrated with beautiful color photographs, it takes the modeler step-by-step through the process of creating a male and a female caricature bust. A gallery will spur the imagination even further. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars These Caricatures are not Endearing!
Mr. Wolfe's caricatures are gross exaggerations of the human form and may not appeal to potential doll or figure sculpters. They are remarkable specifically because they are so grotesque!Mr. Wolfe does give severalhints that would benefit dollmakers - create a concave hole in the end ofan appropriately-sized dowel to sculpt eyeballs directly in the face clay,or to hold a separately created eyeball in position for adhering to theface clay. I'm glad I read through the book, but it's not one I intend tokeep as reference material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the color challenged.
I like to do PC mosaics and that is why I purchased this book. I know nothing about quilts, but their designs got my attention. The instructions are easy to follow and the pictures are great. But what I liked most was how everything was laid out, step by step, color by color. This means a lot to me since I am SEVERLY COLOR CHALLENGED. I can see the colors, but I'm not sure what some of them are. This book is wonderful. I won't be making any quilt blocks, but this book gave me a world of new ideas for my mosaics and many other things. I'm sure people who like quilts will love it too.

To the reviewer who didn't like the book: When you change the way you look at something, whatever you are looking at will also change.

Thanks Judith and Sarajane, Sorry I didn't take time to review your book sooner. Jay

5-0 out of 5 stars Really usable book
I'm so glad I bought this book.I always wanted to try quilt block canes but they looked too complicated and difficult. This book explains how to build canes of traditional and non-traditioal quilt blacks in a way that is easy to understand and copy.It gives a useful technique for precisely and organizing each clay component and color, and also makes it easy to adapt patterns to your own color palate. (I really recommend this book, but one does have to have a rudimentary understanding of how caning works, otherwise the instructions appear to be two dimensional.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I've had this book for over a year and have created several of the complex canes detailed within. The directions are explicit, complete and illustrated and creating the canes has proven to be quite easy with the directions provided. I wouldn't recommend this book to a newbie but you also don't have to be advanced to create the canes described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adapting Quilt Patterns to Polymer Clay
Great book, explaining in detail, how to make complex canes easily.I liked the clear illustrations and instructions.I have been waiting for such a book since I am a quilter who has recently discovered polymer clay.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful guide for clayers
I love this book, and the authors. I don't get the comments of the 1st reviewer, as I found it to be extremely informative and helpful.I am not a quilter, so I needed lots of help and guidance, and I found the step by step instructions to be wonderful!Sarajane, and Judith put clay in reach to everyone!thank you for this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Over all good, but a bit annoyed...
I have been interested in using pmc for quite some time now and finally decided to invest in buying a kiln. Although I had never worked with pmc before, I have a few years of formal training in ceramics. I bought this book with more of an interest in technical information specifically in regards to pmc. Because I am already familiar with using clay as a medium, I was less interested in using the projects (although, I thought that the thimble was a nice idea). This book does seem to have the most techinal information compared to the other books that I have seen, but it was a pretty steep price for the amount of pages that I was most interested in.
I am aggravated. I fired my first piece today in my brand new kiln. Because my piece wasn't flat, I decided to place it in a terra cotta saucer filled with vermiculite as per the author's reccomendation. When I opened the kiln after it had cooled the saucer had basically exploded at some point during firing. Nowhere is there any mention that something like this could happen, nor are there reccomended precautions to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Luckily, it looks as though that it didn't harm the kiln so it isn't the end of the world. But did it make me nervous and annoyed, and it was rather tedious to clean up the dusty mess of vermiculite.
This is a good book, but like all things, has some drawbacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent PMC projects
This is one of the best PMC project books I've found. The directions are clear and concise, and the designs are very appealing. A great idea book as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed
I am slightly disappointed with this book. There are wonderful suggestions and tips given throughout the entire book, however, there are multiple projects where steps are skipped or it is assumed the reader already knows how to perform a certain task.As a new crafter with precious metal clay, I need the steps written out clearly.Overall, though, the book was decent even though the images were sketches and not actual photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know to start working with PMC
if you are new to PMC this is the book for you, the instructions are clear and concise , it includes easy projects and is well illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Working with Precious Metal Clay Review
Tim McCreight is the PMC guru and this book is almost a text book.

Exceptionally well laid out with the different sections, projects, techniques and tools. As a new user of PMC I have found the book to be a great guide as I work my way through the techniques of PMC.

Very well written and illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I have over 20 polymer clay books and this is by far the best. Her designs are stunning and really make me want to push my envelope. It's become my go-to book for inspiration, techniques, and resources. One tiny problem: since the book was published so long ago, many of the companies listed for the beautiful rubber stamps she uses are either out of business or simply cannot be found.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful projects and interesting techniques
I realize that in the world of polymer clay, 2002, the publication date for this book, is an eon ago, but I encourage you to find a copy if it's not already in your library. Although this book is called Creative Stamping in Polymer Clay, I learned so much more than just stamping. There are interesting techniques for getting color onto the clay, techniques for making hand formed beads, and my favorite, making bangle bracelets without a blank. As always, Barbara McGuire has been generous with techniques and beautiful, professional projects. And the idea gallery at the back of the book provides insight into the techniques used to acheive the effects. I'm happy to have this book in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginner to Imtermediate
If you're looking to combine great rubber stamping with another medium, off paper, then this is a great addition to your stamping art library. The book shows great ideas, and shows enuf material on technique that you can do it easily.

Using her expertise as an artist, Barbara does an excellent job of show how limitless the possibilities of stamping with polymer clay can be. Her attention to detail and eye for color, form and function are well expressed in this book. The projects are well timely, well thought out and brilliantly executed. As always, Barbara does an extrodinary job with the finishing of each piece. 5-0 out of 5 stars contemporary polymer clay works
This book shows many different versions of what can be done with polymer clay. It is not a how to book but rather shows some of what is possible. It would suit those working with polymer clay and those interested in 3D art or craft. A great book for inspiration

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing "Eye Candy"
A friend of mine who has been working in polymer clay for over thirty years, loaned me this book.Oh my goodness, what a collection of amazing talent.Such beautiful full color photography, and the subject matter is so varied: sculpture, jewelry, purses, boxes, vessels, wall hangings, and on and on.

I had to have my own copy, not just because of the "eye candy" through out, but because it is diffilcult to explain to people that have no knowledge of this art form, . . . just what is Polymer Clay?I am a new artist in this amazing medium, and when I talk to clients about this clay, I now have the perfect "show and tell" book to dazzle them with.

And yes, it is the perfect "coffee table" book. You'll see!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of fabulous
Lark scores another A+ for their 400 and 500 series of craft books. I am incredibly picky about craft books I purchase and I couldn't be without this one. There isn't an instruction to be found...this isn't about polymer clay as a hobby and it isn't a book of projects or techniques, but it is an eye-popping, amazing collection of polymer clay art. Just five minutes leafing through the pages gives me enough inspiration to last weeks. In these pages you will see every conceivable technique and some that are so new and innovative, you'll be meeting them for the first time. Congratulations to Lark on another in this fabulous series.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book

the editing is great and i love every page in this book

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATION!
Although many wonderful polymer clay artists do not have pieces in this book (e.g. John Anderson's animals), the pieces/artists within the pages of this beautifully laid out book are truly insprirational. After doing a review on a recent book on polymer clay (PC) beads, I felt that I had to look through my other PC books and re-examined this treasure. No, it is not for beginners, and no there are no guidelines on how the artist made their piece(s), just a brief note on the title of the work, items used and maybe a few words by the artist on the piece. The photography of each piece is stunning. The creative process of PC artists today is utterly amazing and this book provides ideas on where one can go with their own work, if PC is the medium of choice.I also appreciate the pieces using other products in the piece (e.g. beads, metal, paper mache, feathers, wood, herbs, sand, etc.).PC canework by some of the artists is also incredible and trying to imagine how they came up with the pattern(s) is often mind-boggling.This makes an excellent coffee table book and for the PC artist, inspiration to strive towards excellency in this medium. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars better than nothing
I was excited to see this book when it first came out. Read it the same day and had mixed thoughts. It is useful if you have never made a mold... but helpless if you have moderate to high experience. It is visually layed out better than anything else out there... and I keep it on the shelf for student reference. If you teach ceramics, keep it around. If you are seeking to learn mold making...it is just one of many books that you will need to peice together the real information that you will need to be a confident mold maker.

This well thought out guide gets right to work explaining in clear, concise steps how to construct various types of clay molds. From basic one-piece molds to complex multi-piece molds, Clayton describes their design, construction, and infinite utility. The book is loaded with excellent color and black and white photographs. Some depict the tools and process. Others show a magnificent sampling of finished products. This guide can take the average pot-throwers hobby to the next level. 5-0 out of 5 stars A fine resource for design and polymer clay
Polymer clay is such a versatile medium that it's hard to know if you're really creating a piece of art or something your kids are going to hide in the attic. This book goes a long way toward answering questions about color, balance, and good design principles, all illustrated in enjoyable projects. For those of us who love the medium but didn't happen to study art, this book truly provides the foundation we should have been looking for.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as interesting as it looks
I was disapointed by this book. The cover is great and drew me to buy it but the contents is a bit all over the place and I'm not sure what the purpose of the book is.There aren't really any projects and the design foundation information is a bit hard to follow.I must admit that I haven't picked it up again since looking at it the first time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful concept, badly written
This introduction to design principles for artists working in polymer clay is a useful book, and I learned a lot from it.McGuire discusses the elements of design, including value, color, form, shape, line, space and texture, and addresses more briefly design principles like balance, pattern, rhythm, emphasis, and unity.McGuire follows each section of the book with an exercise designed to allow the reader to experiment with the element or principle being discussed, and illustrates each section with excellent photographs of polymer clay art that uses that element or principle particularly effectively.Between the exercises and the photographs, I was able, as a design newbie, to gain some understanding of McGuire's topics. However, McGuire's writing is so muddy and vague that I learned almost nothing from the text itself.Indeed, some of the paragraphs--especially those defining the key concepts--were so unclear and confusing that I was completely unable to discern what McGuire was talking about. The editor of this book really fell down on the job!

So, while this book did help me get started thinking about the elements and principles of design, I will have to turn to other authors to gain a richer understanding of these ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book
This has some of the most wonderful artists. And good examples of their work.Just lovely a favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite polymer clay book...
Barbara McGuire's Foundations in Polymer Clay Design is a must have for every polymer clay artist. It has exceptional information to enhance one's design knowledge and how to apply this knowledge to polymer clay artwork. The photos are stunning and best of all, show evidence of today's talented pc artists.Barbara's examples of each design concept and how they apply to working in polymer clay are valuable to the serious artist.

This book has several wonderful easy-to-try projects that demonstrate the chapter's concept. These lessons help to satisfy the reader who is looking for practice, but may not be 'enough' for the person who is simply looking for a book of how-to projects.

McGuire's book will remain an excellent reference for the artist and one where new lessons can be learned each time the book is taken off the shelf to reread.Five Stars!!!! ... Read more
