4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I am one of those parents that played a limitted amount of Baseball when I was a kid then never played again. Faced with a child in kindergarten that wanted to play on a pee-wee team that needed a coach, I volunteered. This book has not only helped me coach, but also helped the kids be better players. Thanks to Amazon's extensive selection, I once again was able to bail myself out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Coaching youth sports
This entire series is great for beginning to intemediate coaches. Plenty of great ideas to try on your team.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
I bought this book after I had volunteered to coach a Pinto League (7-8 yr old) team that my son was on.This book provided a good starting point for getting organized and creating a good practice worksheet.Sound baseball fundamentals, being organized and having fun in a supportaive environment lead to a successful and happy Little League experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book
A Well Organized book, as a rookie coach last season, it gave me what I needed to know.I particularly liked the overview of safety presented up front -- too many people take this for granted and stupid injuries can result.

Be Advised though that the rest of the Baffled Parents Series doesn't necessarily live up to the standard set by this book - I found the Basketball book very average.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baffled No More!
This was the first "Coaching" book I have purchased. The book provides excellent insight into what is truly involved in coaching a youth baseball team. The practice planner section was a big help in conducting anorganized and effectice practice. I highly recommend this book to beginningcoached like myself or seasoned veterans. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Older (12U+)Players
I was looking for a book to help me with my daughter who is playing in 8U this year. This is not the book for that. While it is an excellent reference, the book focuses on tools and drills that only the older girls can do. I would recommend it for the older girls but not for 8U or even 10U.

Well written with lots of details and good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the first time coach.
Alot of basic information. If you've already read one or two coaching softball books this one is not much different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Coaching Resource
Kathy Veroni and Roanna Brazier have written a real winner with their excellent softball reference, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully -- Second Edition".It is the first book to which I turn when I have a question about managing my team.As a softball board member, if there is an issue on which I feel lost, I can inevitably find good guidance from Veroni/Brazier.In the latter case, Chapter 4, Building a Softball Program, has been particularly valuable time and again.

While written for the travel, high school, or college manager, there is plenty here for lower level recreational league coaches as well. There are whole chapters that can benefit any coach, including developing a coaching philosophy, communicating, motivating, coaching plans, and evaluating the players, team, and the job one has done overall as coach for the season.Additionally, there are exceptional sections on coaching offense, defense and managing a game tactically that are unique to this book.

I love the hitting drills finder in Chapter 8.Instead of focusing on a particular skill to develop, as other drill finders do, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" directs its attention on batting problems or flaws to correct. What an absolutely brilliant approach...and of course, extremely valuable to a coach who wants to be more effective!Throw in the standard chapters on defensive and pitching drills and fundamentals, and "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" becomes a complete reference guide for having a successful season and program.

I know that this book has given my teams at the recreational league level a real edge, both on the playing field and off.Whether one is a new coach at the recreational level, or a seasoned veteran at the travel or high school level, this book is a must-have on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
The book was in perfect condition and the shipping was right on time! Great transaction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Pitchers 3rd Edition
Great book with easy illustrations. My son who is 12 says its easy to read & understand. There is great advice for parents to help you teach the techniques in the book. I would recommend this book for any coach, parent or player looking to improve technique.

4-0 out of 5 stars Include this in your pitching library
McFarland has created a single source reference for aspiring pitchers. Much of what is in the book is part and parcel of years of baseball acumen. There is game situation, training, defensive, and mechanical advice in this book. At the very end there is motivational tips for getting the most from your pitchers. This book would have benefited from clear pictures of the motions of the pitchers and of the throwing motions on the various pitches. The drawings are vague enough to invite too many interpretations and the complex motion of pitching is difficult to describe verbally. I do not agree with the prior reviewer that House has totally eclipsed the valuable information found here.

I especially valued the advice about pitch selection based on a hitter's weaknesses. McFarland describes more than 20 batting habits that can be exploited by the pitcher. Additionally he diagrams where the pitcher should locate defensively on throws from the outfield or after pick off throws. All very helpful for the young pitcher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentaly sound pitching instruction!
Coaching Pitchers is well written, easy to read and understand, and provides a wealth of how to teach your pitchers the proper fundamentals of pitching. This book is well worth the price and needs to be read by EVERYyouth coach. The techniques, drills and suggestions are well documentedwith illustrations and diagrams. If you only buy one book this year, getthis one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Nicely layed out and a great guide for developing young pitchers from 8 year-olds through high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good a book on pitching as there is
This is as good an introduction to the art of pitching as there is.Simple but not simplistic with excellent illustrations.I recommend it highly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't wasteyour money
This book is a waste of money.I am an assistant coach for a 5th grade girl's volleyball team.I was hoping to learn something new, get some creative ideas on coaching or building teamwork, or at least come away with one good drill. The book offers none of the above.it's very basic and there is nothing original in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching this age group
I've been around volleyball for many years as a player, coach and ref, so I wasn't looking for a primer on coaching. Although I've had many opportunities to teach fundamentals in a clinic settingI'm getting my first opportunity to coach JO youth for a season. This book was very helpful in getting me to understand that 14 year old girls are going to need a somewhat different approach than adult and high school players and gave me great ideas to help me be successful with them. The assistant coaches were also given the book sothat we all were, quite literally, on the same page during practices. Everyone thinks it is quite valuable and are committed to trying the book's approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Youth Volleyball

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for starting a youth program
I'm a varsity coach, so stepping back and teaching youth wanted to get a refresher course as we set up our youth program. This book is a big help, though for the experienced coach I would assume they know most of it but could use it as a refresher as well.Beginner coaches it would be great, especially for middle school level and below levels. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that touches on every aspect
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page.No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.

Bruce Driver's talent both as a former Stanley Cup winner and a long time coach combined with Clare Wharton's flawless and engaging writing style makes this book an absolute must for hockey lovers new and old.

Product Description
Numerous coaching books cover the skills and drills of basketball, but very few hit on the tactical skills of the game--the situational decisions players and coaches make that often determine the outcome of games. That's where Coaching Basketball Technical and Tactical Skills stands out.

Written by the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) in conjunction with Kathy McGee, the winningest high school girls' basketball coach in Michigan, and USA Basketball's Don Showalter, this book will prepare you to be a better teacher and tactician of the game whether you coach men's or women's basketball.

Technical skills (such as dribbling, shooting, and rebounding) are examined in depth, as are the tactical skills (such as the give-and-go, backdoor cut, and trapping). More than 195 photos and illustrations bring the basic to intermediate skills to life, while sample season and practice plans will help you in your preparation. You'll find quick tips on how to detect and correct errors in both male and female athletes, cues they need to be aware of in various tactical situations, and key information they need in order to make the appropriate on-court decisions.

Produced by ASEP and endorsed by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), this book serves as a resource for the Coaching Basketball Technical and Tactical Skills online course, a part of ASEP's Bronze Level Professional Coaches Education Program. Numerous state high school associations, colleges and universities, national sport organizations, and national governing bodies of Olympic sports use the Bronze Level in whole or in part to qualify coaches. The Bronze Level prepares coaches for all aspects of coaching and is a recognized and respected credential for all who earn it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start creating a coaching culture
It is not unusual to find large organizations / corporations with a "command and control" approach. But, what is often needed to increase employee engagement, motivation, AND positively impact productivity and the bottom line is a "coach approach."Ms. Oberstein's excellent book is written for leaders wanting to help create a coaching culture. It is well-written, practical, and the tools, forms, and examples included are invaluable.I strongly recommend this great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sandra Feder "Coach and Facilitator"
10 Steps to Successful Coaching is a must-read for anyone who uses coaching skills in the workplace or in day-to-day life.Although this book is written for people who are functioning as coaches in the workplace, I found this book to be indispensable in helping me prepare for private coaching work. What I really love is that it provides not just the "whys" of coaching but so many "how-to" resources, including charts and lists of questions. Also, it is well-written and fun to read, because Ms. Oberstein's optimism and joy in being a coach come through on every page.

5-0 out of 5 stars improve your coaching!
Like all the 10 Steps books, this includes pointers, tools, and examples to help the reader be successful. It includes the preparation, how to find out about your coachee, and how to partner to be successful.Loved that coaching is NOT about giving advice. It is about asking the right questions - questions the coachee wouldn't necessarily think of themselves. This is an affordable tool for the coaches toolbox!
