4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
We had already read this book after checking it out from the library. It was a good, relevant book so we bought it as reference for our new pet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiel: Your Happy Healthy Pet
I've had cockatiels and canaries for several years now and have purchased numerous bird (cockatiel) books -- not counting tons of vet visits and research. I bought 2 of these books. One for my sister (a new cockatiel owner) and one for my collection. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was. This book is a cut and paste job from other books. The pictures are scarce (and derived from other books I own) and usually of normal grays with keratin crests - few mutations. Some of the information is just plain wrong, i.e. Pinning - where a parrots pupil dilates, as when they're nervous or going to strike. Amazons, Greys, and other larger parrots have eyes that will/can pin, cockatiel'sdon't. Very hard to when your eyes are almost entirely black and you can only see their pupils in very bright lights with your face in theirs. There was even a paragraph that ended with "this was the way to have a happy parakeet"??!! Additionally, though all birds should be offered fresh veggies, along with pellets & some seeds, many avian authorities will tell you that cockatiels and parakeets seem to do better with more seeds in their diet. It's not recommended to give cockatiels a diet based almost entirely on pellets. If you want a good cockatiel book, get anything from Diane Grindol. This book is definitely NOT recommended. Save your money.... wish I had. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good little book
I bought this for a friend who intended on getting into Tiels. After reading she decided to go for Green Cheek Conures instead.
Cockatiels are wonderful but they have a dust gland and can cause breathing difficulty in their owners. The small conures have no dust gland and they take the same feeding and housing that a tiel does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Ideas!
This book is written by vegetarians who have no idea what a "healthy" diet is. I, myself, am a vegetarian, and wouldn't consider any of the recipes in this book to be healthy for a parrot OR a human to eat on a regular basis. Occasionally, in moderation, or as a special training treat, some of these items are okay.

Loads of dairy products (which do more harm than good to all of us) and loads of saturated (and unsaturated) fat, sugar, oils, etc. Yuck!

This book is also full of outright misinformation. For example, the author states that birds have a "palate nearly as sophistocated as that of a human." Humans have an average of 10,000 taste buds. Parrots have, on average, 400-500. I wouldn't call that similar at all!

Much of this book's pages are filled with anecdotes and stories which would be better suited to one of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books rather than a recipe book for birds. The authors have no formal (or informal) education in behavior, nutrition (human, parrot, or otherwise), veterinary care, or animal husbandry; this book is based entirely on their opinions and personal experiences.

While the recipes are flexible and you can easily substitute a healthier ingredient for a less healthy one, this book is not appropriate for people who are new to bird keeping and who have no knowledge of nutrition in general (and species-specific nutrition, in particular - remember, unlike cats and dogs, which are comprised of multiple breeds within their species, parrots and birds are actually different species of animals.) Different species have different vitamin, mineral, carbohydrate, protein, and fat requirements, and the recipes in this book aren't appropriate for many species without adding, subtracting, or substituting ingredients.

1-0 out of 5 stars IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PARROTS AFTER ALL
Gourmet Bird Food Recipes: IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PARROTS AFTER ALL

Quotation out of the book:
'No one knows exactly what a well balanced diet for a bird is, but experts are coming closer to understand....'

My appraisal is:
.... that gratiné, the use of butter and salt like in penne in cream sauce, the reccomended Italian dressing, or garlic butter is miles away from a healthy diet for parrots. And I never provide a sort of these suggested menues to my fosterlings. I even must say, that these recipes are unhealthy - possibly even noxious. Oh dear!

Not recommended at all!

If your intention is to cook for your bird 'Healthy Bird Cookbook' by Robin Deutsch is a good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook for Bird Lovers!
I bought this book when I got my African Grey parrot.Eight years later and I've had to replace it because I got "goop" all over it!I have not only used it all the time, I've bought it as a gift for all my bird loving friends! My grey girl loves all the recipes!I highly recommend this cookbook for all of our avian friends!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff Cookbook!!
For anyone who loves to cook for their parrots, this one is a must have.
My birdies have enjoyed every morsel out of here !

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
Beware!Alot of the recipes have milk and cheese in them.Birds are lactose intolerant so those recipes can make them very ill. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars brief, but a good thing
Brief, but not dumbed down. It is a good, fast read. It is great if you have kids and cockatiels, cohabiting.

The vocabulary and concepts are more advanced than the large print. However, reading this book together would be a great sharing and growing experience, if you have kids.

They could read it outloud, and you can explain what the words mean, such as egg binding, nutrition, clutch, minerals ... They can expand their vocabulary, and develop their sensitivity toward the needs of other living things.

The large print and concision might also benefit those who love birds, but have a hard time seeing smaller print.

Even if you have no need for the larger print and concision, it is still a useful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars If Your Best Friend is Your Cockatiel...
For those who are new owners of cockatiels, this book is a must have. Don't be put off by its brevity. All the important questions such as, "Is my cockatiel a boy or a girl?" are answered within. Topicssuch as training and taming, diet, cage space, breeding, and health aredealt with succinctly yet clearly. So whether you've already purchased afeathered bundle of joy or are thinking of getting one, check this bookout. The price won't ruffle your feathers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sweet book for anyone who has ever loved a bird
My Bird Bud is a small book with a big whallop, especially for those who have ever loved and lost a bird. The author genuinely captures the relationship between herself and the Cockatiel, Bud, and reminds bird owners of the little things that we love about our birds. Bud only lived 14 years, but this book lives on in his memory. It's an easy, interesting read, and may help both adults and children to grieve a bird who has crossed to the Rainbow Bridge. This book handles Bud's life - and death - with humor and compassion. It reminded me of every bird I've lost and I'm glad that someone has written about the love and loss we feel for a departed feathered friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR ALL AGES
Since my 90 year old mother doesn't have a computer, I thought I'd share the fact that SHE LOVED THIS BOOK.It was so captivating that she couldn't put it down and naturally she has recommended it to all of her friends.I might add that I ALSO LOVE THIS BOOK and how often do we all have pets that have left an impact on our lives so to have a book such as this one, only personifies the memories that will be shared for years to come.Well done!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for any animal lover!
This book is incredibly heartwarming....it will make you laugh, chuckle and definitely bring tears. No matter what pet you have loved, you will remember that pet as you read this little book.A fun and memorable read! ... Read more
