5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect guide you need to get started in coin collecting!
I just got started in coin collecting not too long ago, but I didn't know where to start or how to get started. Then I found Instant Coin Collector. This great resource gives you helpful tips on how to get started on what to look out for. I have found it to be a well-written and invaluable guide to help steer me in the right direction in my numismatic adventures. The author is to the point and uses language about coins that any beginner will understand. If you are a beginner who is looking for a helpful guide to get started or to help better shape your coin-collecting practices, I strongly recommend getting this book. It's well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to coin collecting for novices
This book covers the basics of collecting coins, including info on storage, where to find coins, strategies to collecting, and much more.It starts with very simple directions and takes the time to define the jargon used by collectors. The author gives different examples of how to begin collecting without being overwhelmed by the process.I think the advice to begin with a certain denomination and use folders to help find the coins to complete a series, helps to keep you from getting frustrated and quitting before you even get started. The author explains how to begin with just searching pocket change and maybe getting some rolls of coins from your local bank, which can be a fun and inexpensive ways to get your feet wet.

The language in the book is written to where a 10 or 12 year old could understand it, but not so oversimplified that it is boring for adults. The author adds little bits of trivia at the end of each section covering a specific denomination and often includes something humorous about the coin.

So if you are a complete newbie or a casual coin collector, this book will give you everything you need to know to either begin a collection or take that jar of old coins you have been hanging on to, and organize them.It should help you make coin collecting a fun and interesting endeavor for you and your family ... Great book that tells of history of each coin and includes masterpieces of the subject period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference book byzantine coins, wayne g sales.
Excellent reference material for the collector of ancient coins. Easy to follow guidelines for beginners and sophists alike - specializ.ing in the late Roman Empire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Clear - An Excellent Resource
Wayne Sayles has created a masterpiece with his "Ancient Coin Collecting V - The Romaion/Byzantine Culture." This book is a great resource, it introduces all of the main themes in Byzantine coinage and directs the reader where to look to find out more.

This book goes at length to describe the denomination of Byzantine coins, the meanings of the markings, and has an article for each emperors and claimants to the throne, from 491-1453. At least every page has at least one black and white photo, many genealogies, excellent bibliographies and much more.

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Byzantine coins. This book is also offers are remarkably lucid description of the narrative of Byzantine history. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Empires Just Fade Away
This review is written from the perspective of the amateur collector on a limited budget. It has been said that collecting ancient coins was the "hobby of Kings".It might also be said that reference books onthis subject can only be afforded by Kings, and are certainly lessaffordable than the coins. Not so with the readable series by WayneSalyes, past editor of the premier journal on ancient coins, The Celetor. Number five (better to write V) in the series focuses on coins minted bythe Roman empire during its long slide into oblivian.Constantinople alsocalled Byzantium, and now called Istanbul, was the capital of the Empireand the center of Christianity from its founding by Constantine the Greatin the 4th century to its final demise in the 15th century when the cityfell to Mehmet the (Turkish) Conquerer in 1453.Most of us think of Romeas the capital of the Roman Empire but the Eastern half of the empire, while not so glorius, lived a 1000 years longer. Coinage usually reflectsthe culture, and this is clearly illustrated in Sayles' presentation.Itis filled with numerous figures of coins, maps, and geniology. While allof his volumes are usually regarded as "introductory" and for the"new collector" to distinguish them from the comprehensivecatalogues used to attribute coins, this particular volume has beenparticularly useful to me as an affordable attribution reference. It isfascinating to see how the coinage changed from images of emperor andsoldiers to images of Christ and crosses. This is a superb addition to theseries, fills a gap in the literature, and whets my appitite for volume VI. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Coin Collecting II
The author does a good job keeping the book interesting.I believe the book fulfilled the purpose of being an introductory book on Ancient Coinage.I would have preferred more background on the coins, but then the book would need to be larger.Recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for a beginner
this is a great book for the beginner in the hobby of ancient coin collecting...well written and illustrated

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Overview of Ancient Greek Coinage
I agree with other reviewers that this book is an excellent introduction to ancient Greek coins collecting.

What I also liked about this book is:

1)The list of major issuing cities with brief but interesting comments regarding the cities' history (e.g. the dramatic events such as the destruction of Messana by Carthaginians)

2) The list of the rulers of major Hellenistic dynasties (reading about these people's lives and seeing their faces on coins is really impressive)

3) Masterpieces of Greek Art section featuring 25 beautiful coins which are among the author's favourites (I personally liked about 20 of those).

One of the things you learn from this book is that you don't actually have to OWN these beautiful coins to ENJOY them. All it takes is willingness to spend your time and energy to explore these treasures from the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to ancient Greek Coin collecting
Having collected ancient coins for decades, I must confess to a real fondness for the Sayles books, and for this one in particular. It is beautifuly illustrated, as well as informative, and makes the reader truly want to own the coins which Sayles discusses. One thing which makes this better for new collectors than some other books, is that Sayles isn't touting ancient coins as an investment. They are NOT a sound investment for the average collector, who can expect a 30% or higher LOSS when reselling the coins which most average collectors can afford to buy -- beautiful as they are, the typical coins which the average collector can afford are NOT going to shoot through the roof in value, even if they are extremely rare or unique. The market strength and bullish demand isn't present to allow the average collector to profit from most of his or her coins. What makes the Sayles book appealing is its inspiration for readers to COLLECT these coins and treasure them, as they have been treasured for thousands of years, and YES, it is thrilling indeed to buy a coin of which only two or three other specimens are known in the world, and -- YES! -- it is possible to own coins which are absolutely unique. Thanks to generations of dedicated collectors, it is even possible to buy -- for small sums -- coins which have established provenances dating back a century or more.My own collection includes coins once owned by President John Quincy Adams and by J. P. Morgan, but they each cost less than some best-selling potboiler novels which will be forgotten by next season.Read Sayles and begin to dream!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read first, buy coins later
One of the great books every coin collector should read.Mr. Travers knows his stuff and does a good job explaining the pitfalls that coin collectors can encounter and how to avoid them.

5-0 out of 5 stars My #1 Recommended Coins Book
Hundreds of books about coin collecting are published every year, and most of them are just rehashes of the same old things. What sets this book apart is the actionable information about how to make money in coins right now.

The author, Scott A. Travers, is a leading consumer advocate in the numismatic (coin collecting) marketplace. He has long held a well-earned reputation for telling it like it is, and taking no prisoners along the way.In the "Coin Collector's Survival Manual", he reveals the secrets that million-dollar coin dealers use to make money, and he does it in a step-by-step manner that is easy to follow and interesting to read.

For example, a lot of people make good money by breaking the coins out of PCGS and NGC grading service holders, and sending them back in for a higher grade.Travers provides lists on page 154-55 and 160 of the coins most likely to get an upgrade. And if you're not sure how to crack open the holders without making a mess and damaging the coins, check out the instructions on pages 151-2.

Counterfeit and doctored (altered) coins and holders are becoming an increasingly severe problem as technology advances and the fraudsters improve their fakes. This book has saved me from making costly mistakes, as it includes multiple sections and chapters that address deceptive coins. It was the first media anywhere to defy PCGS' public stance and publish photos of the fake PCGS slabs, plus Travers has the full diagnostics for detecting the fake NGC slabs, all in large, full-color photos.

I could go on and on about the benefits of this book, but neither of us have the time to write (or read) them all.Suffice to say that the "Coin Collector's Survival Manual" has everything you need to learn about the coin market today, and coin collecting in general.Whether you're a brand new collector or an accomplished expert, you need this book!I am making money buying and selling coins in ways I never could have known without Travers' teaching.I love this guy's stuff!

(Note regarding previous editions of this title:Travers has significantly updated and enhanced the best of his classic advice, cutting out much that was dated or no longer so useful, and adding a great deal of new material. This book is a major upgrade from the 5th edition.)

Bottom Line:A "must-have" book (unless you like paying too much for coins and/or buying doctored and counterfeit material.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Coin Collectors Guide. Informative and up-to-date
No gimmicks, Highly recommended!

Collecting coins is a great hobby for both the young and the old.If you are going to get into selling coins as well, this is a MUST READ.Spend the time with this book and you will avoid getting ripped-off and actually make some money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book---Where's the Follow Through??
I have been a fan of Scott Travers books for a while now. When it came time to sell my collection after reading a few books, Mr. Travers who promotes himself and his firm throughout this particular book, was nowhere to be found. I followed the advice in this book and tried to contact Mr. Travers several times by phone and email to sell my collection valued at over $20K.After leaving messages on more than one occasion, I received a phone call inquiring on my collection, and explaining I would receive another phone call later. That phone call never came. All I would ask is that this author, who took time to write a book claiming to be the best of it's kind on the market, to follow through with his own words. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview and roadmap to collecting areas.
As the author states, this is not meant to be a comprehensive volume. The field of ancient coins from non-classical cultures is so wide, that I think it is wonderful that someone took the time to assemble an overview thathelps the beginner to start recognizing types, and then points them in theright direction. This is especially useful in a field where references forvery narrow segment of the coinage are hard to find, and most often veryexpensive. I myself have invested in a book or two that sounded as if itwould carry my field of interest--only to leave me out in the cold, with avery empty wallet!

I only wish that Wayne Sayles could continue thisseries to cover coinage from India, Ceylon/Sri Lanka, and Asia as well. Anexcellent book for those new to the field, or looking to expand theirancient coin collecting interests outside the Classical World.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too broad of a spectrum
I have bought and read almost all of the books in this series and definitely this is the one that satisfied me the least. In trying to squeeze too many cultures living in too broad of a time frame in just oneregular sized book, the reader is just confused on the relation between thechoices of cultures displayed. Most of the individual sections are just tooshort to show the coinage and much less the history of these peoples. Oneshould approach this book as a long, long magazine article that presentssome non classical cultures and just that. It is not even a book, as theothers in the series are, that entices you to look deeper into thebibliography and that at least gives you the 'big picture'. This book onlysucceeds in confusing and making the coinage of those already almostunknown cultures a little bit more obscure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of information
I'm new to coin collecting and this is my first book on the subject. It seemed to have information both for the beginner and expert alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Provides a broad scope but doesn't do it well.
It is pretty much impossible to find a good price guide and this isn't one of them.As usual, not enough grades. Most U.S. listings do not include MS-63 which I would consider essential. This book does provide possibly the closest to what coins actually cost for U.S. coins. The Canadian section is difficult to read and sorely lacking in good information. My suggestion is to watch for the annual price guide from Coins magazine which is what this basically is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy coin book
This book does not list coin YB65a, which is an official Restrike in 1991 at the Lenningrad mint of a 1902 37 1/2 Ruble coin that had been struck at the same mint. Official restrikes are important because they are authorized by the government official mint. Fanstasy "coins" made at a private mint may be unusual, but rather meaningless, as most are really bullion or medallions, like the Maui Trade Dollar, issued by the Chamber of Commerce; the Maui Trade Dollar was one of the best of the fanstay "coins". However, this book fails to list the silver Maui Trade dollars, so not much effort was made to make this book complete, in its limited area of unusual world "coins". One one bullion bars are listed, but they are not coins. Little thought went into this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Item
This book is invaluable to one who collects or is interested in Fantasy Coins.Too bad that itdoes not cover so many of the more recent ones (i.e. 1994 and later).Unusual World Coins: Companion Volume to Standard Catalog of World Coins Series

3-0 out of 5 stars A brief coin history would improve this publication
An excellent reference for unusual coins. The book would be better if a brief history of each coin was also included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coin Collectors' Fun Book
This is a coin catalogue worth buying even if you don't have a single coin it lists. The Unusual coins are really unusual in the way they depict human vain hopes, unattainable dreams, and impossible ambitions. You can see here coins from imaginary or lost empires (Russian monarchists struck their coins in 1990), states that have not been recognized by a single sovereign nation (Hutt River Province) or worlds which existed only in the imagination of writers (the Middle Earth) or private mints (Russian euro coins...). All this is a great tribute to human imagination and entepreneurial spirit, neatly presented in the form of a handy volume.
Naturally, you may actually collect these coins. In this case you will find the typical Krause quality - lots of pictures are missing, some coins are not listed completely (just my luck - I have only 1 euro coin of the 2002 Vaticane euro trial issue and this coin is missing - there is #6 - 50 cents and #8 - 2 euro but no #7 - 1 euro ;) but as it is in the case of all Krause catalogues: you just won't find anything better! ...
