This issue offers multiple perspectives on the ways community college faculty fulfill their complex roles. The first chapters draw on data from national surveys to provide a broad overview of the contemporary community college professoriate. Chapter authors also focus on community college faculty's central responsibility: teaching. The volume next examines the practices and attitudes of particular groups of instructors, including part-timers, female faculty, and faculty of color. The concluding chapters explore faculty professional development, the formation of community within the community colleges, and the development of the professoriate as a profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and educational read
To be honest I never actually managed to read this book from cover to cover. However, I have found the book to be useful and regularly refer to it when I have questions. The first few chapters of the book, reads like someone's thesis research and may not be all that interesting if you're just looking for useful tips and strategies. However, further into the book one can find some very useful information. For example Chapter 9 looks at the implications of being a post-secondary student with ADD. In Chapter 10 the focus is on study skills for the ADD student. Chapter 11 looks at some of the ADD related implications for educators. Also the back of the book has a thick appendix section and is filled with information for students, administrators, as well as instructors. If you are a student or educator who's interested in post-secondary ADHD issues and are interested in research on the topic, then this book is worth owning. I can't say that this book is a must-have for the average ADHD student, but is a worthwhile purchase if you are seriously interested in the topic of ADD in the post secondary environment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Advice in a Handy Format
In How to Stay Christian in College, author J. Budziszewski offers information, advice, and ideas for students who want to hold on to their Christian faith during their college years.

The book is divided into four major sections:

*Introduction - Why is this book necessary? and How this book can help
*Worldviews - What God thinks of the world, what the world thinks of itself, and talking with non-Christian friends
*Campus Myths - Myths about the search for knowledge, love and sex, politics
*How to Cope - Coping in campus social life, campus religious life, and in the classroom

I liked this book a lot.The author candidly addresses many important points, while writing in short sections that are quick to read.He provides realistic and useful ways to respond to people whose views differ from our own--as well as reminders to respond respectfully and calmly.Section headers and highlighted keywords help the reader find specific parts, which makes this a solid go-to reference, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Staying Christian in College
How to Stay Christian in College by J. Budziszewski is a must read for every Christian young person planning to attend college, secular or otherwise. Being the product of a Christian college and knowing many young people who have attended similar institutions, I recommend this as required reading for them as well. It is not always a given that one finds a consistent and articulated Christian worldview on a Christian college campus.
Budziszewski speaks from experience. He is professor of philosophy and government at University of Texas in Austin, and was an atheist as a young person, He knows well the atmosphere and lifestyle challenges that young people face on the college campus.
The book is designed as a resource guide. In the chapters, Dr. Budziszewski attempts to explode some of the myths that students face at the university. Whether the issue is postmodernism, politics, pluralism, or sexual freedom, there is great help to found in these pages. The book can be read from beginning to end or the chapters can be consulted for help with the individual topics.
I think this book should be given to Christian high school seniors. Many of the issues that college students face are present in seed form in high school. It would help to identify pitfalls before it is too late.
I do not think that a Christian college is necessarily right for every young person. Certainly, the message of the gospel needs to be shared on the university campus. But not every Christian young person is equipped to face the challenges of university life. Budziszewski's work will do much to help address that need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the college-bound and those who love them.
How to Stay Christian in College, is written by J. Budziszewski, a professor of government and theology at the University of Texan and well-known contributing author of articles on Boundless, an online magazine and website for college-aged young adults produced by Focus on the Family.

This book is written for those currently enrolled in college, those who are considering college, and those who care about either group and desire to lift them up in prayer. With the decline of morality and biblical worldview in today's world at large, it ought not to be a surprise that often the greeting towards believers at a college or university is hostile, rather than welcoming. The rate of young adults leaving the Christian faith of their youth is quite saddening and alarming. Professor Budziszwski address through this book some reasons for this tragedy, as well as truths that one can grip to in order to guard their hearts and souls, to be a light for Christ when faced with ridicule or challenges to your faith.

This book reminded me of foundation truths, challenging me in my resolve and faith. Was I firm in my worldview, having it centered on the infallible Word of God? Was I allowing little disbeliefs or even worse, my own ideas, to replace what God had said to be true? An excellent resource to direct our thoughts towards truths about God and to further our concern for those around us to have their lives saturated with the work and saving grace of the Lord.

1-0 out of 5 stars The title doesn't lie
Makes college look like an assault that you need to be protected from rather than an opportunity to learn and interact with people who see the world differently than you do:

"The modern university is profoundly alienated from God and hostile to Christian faith" (p. 28)
"...and from the moment students set foot on the contemporary campus, their Christian convictions and discipline are assaulted." (p. 15)
"Because you're going into war. I don't mean a war of bombs and bullets and ballistic missiles; I mean a much more fiery, deadly war of errors and sins and temptations -- of mind-bombs, soul-bullets, and spiritual powers at great heights." (p. 95)
"From every direction the Enemy will be whispering, 'Think this way too; yes, think this way too. This way is happiness. This way is joy. This way is knowing Who You Really Are.' Actually that way is pain, loneliness, and never really knowing anyone else." (p. 124)

Encourages a closed mind to ideas that differ from Budziszewski's:

"According to all of the other religions, stuff merely develops into similar stuff or perhaps remains unchanged...You see that they don't really have an idea of Creation, and that's why they can't really tell God apart from what He made. That's why they worship created things instead of the Creator Himself...The Bible calls this sin." (p. 37-38)
"Just remember to avoid any venture that corrupts you, compromises your Christian beliefs, or drags you down" (p. 134)

Creates condescending stereotypes of non-Christian students and teachers:

"Just as on Mars Hill, students and teachers sense that there's something missing in all their learning. But they still think themselves wiser than anyone else." (p.49)
"Naturalists like to think of themselves as brave defenders of clear reasoning against irrational supersition, but actually naturalism itself is the supersition." (p.52)
"There's plenty of evidence about the big things. Skeptics just don't want to look." (p.89)
"Another big reason you might break up is that you realize your friend isn't good for you. This is especially likely if he is not a Christian" (p. 127)

So I guess this book does it's job in teaching its readers how to stay Christian in college; By assuming that the brand of Christianity you were raised in is the only true and correct worldview to have, by surrounding yourself with people who think exactly like you, and by staying far away from all other ideas. Or, excuse me, all other "soul-bullets."

Judging by the previous reviews of this book it's pretty obvious that most Christians will enjoy it. However most non-Christians will probably find it condescending, insulting, unintentionally humerous, and difficult to finish. It points a lot of fingers at non-Christians, but fails to examine itself. Just take the phrase I quoted above and change one word: "There's plenty of evidence about big things. Christians just don't want to look." Now it makes a whole lot more sense to skeptics.

College is a place where diverse ideas come to meet. This book makes sure that you arrive with your blindfolds on, earplugs in, and guns-a-blazin'.

Product Description
This volume highlights existing issues in online courses and programs and provides strategies for addressing them as the demand for online education continues to grow. Organizational changes caused by greater reliance on technology for teaching and learning are still not fully understood, and many colleges continue to react to change rather than positioning themselves to take advantage of it. As a challenge to that, contributors to this volume use personal narratives and research to discuss how online education continues to lead to organizational, professional, and personal change.

Community colleges are at the forefront of the tremendous growth in online programs. Two-year colleges now serve more than half of all online students, and they are poised for continued growth as more adults seek education and retraining. Despite the acceptance, and even expectation, of online services and programs in education, colleges must address existing issues before expanding these. This volume is an indispensable resource in that process.

This is the 150th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Community Colleges. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission. ... "I can't imagine anyone living or working with adolescents and young adults without being aware of the material in this book. A must read for educators, health providers, student personnel, administrators, the clergy, campus security and even parents."

--Mary P Koss, The Arizona Prevention Center, University of Arizona

For many students, coeducational college campus life is marred by traumatic experiences of sexual assault. While there are many social determinants of rape and attempted rape, this volume examines the pivotal role of male peer support in legitimizing the sexual assault of women. The authors use extensive prior studies together with their own investigations, including a national representative study and local campus victimization surveys carried out in the United States and Canada.

Product Description
Religious colleges and universities in America are growing at a breakneck pace. In this startling new book, journalist Naomi Schaefer Riley explores these schools-interviewing administrators, professors, and students-to produce the first popular, accessible, and comprehensive investigation of this phenomenon.Call them the Missionary Generation. By the tens and hundreds of thousands, some of America's brightest and most dedicated teenagers are opting for a different kind of college education. It promises all the rigor of traditional liberal arts schools, but mixed with religious instruction from the Good Book and a mandate from above. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Shouldn't confuse reporting with research
I greatly liked that Ms. Riley went after some of the more salient questions for religious colleges today, such as attitudes towards feminism, acceptance of gay or lesbian students, sexual culture, etc.But this book is too much like Rosin's book, _God's Harvard_, in that it often passes itself off as research when it is truly just reporting.

For example, citing statistics on the relative number of women and men on campus has been discredited as an indicator of feminist views long ago - the views of females do not equal feminist views, as some women Riley quotes express.Neither does "The American Freshman" survey attempt to define what their survey questions mean, and I expect significant differences in understanding between secular and religious college students when it comes to key terms in that survey.

Basically, Ms. Riley makes a lot of broad assumptions which she never explores, which is fine if you are a merely reporting your surface impressions, but cannot provide helpful research. For example, she seems to say all evangelical Christians are Red-state, neoconservatives (I'm not).Or all secular Boomers are anti-religious (many of my atheist Boomer friends are very respectful of my beliefs - including most of my professors).Since she doesn't acknowledge her own general assumptions, it is not surprising that she makes similar sweeping assumptions when quoting one student, even when the interpretation of the quote itself is highly suspect.

As long as readers understand this is one person's take on her experiences at certain religious colleges, the book is a great read.Once people begin viewing it as research, it becomes problematic.I'm concerned too many readers will consider it research because of the way Riley describes her actions, uses quotations from personal interviews, and her assertions that this will increase our understanding of conservative religious institutions of higher education.

3-0 out of 5 stars When you find yourself burning at the stake...
You will understand what Riley means by her subtitle. The schools the author reviews run the gamut from ultra-crazy (Bob Jones University), to institutions that aren't much different from secular universities (Baylor and Notre Dame). The common theme is that the crazy schools are cheap to attend, are utterly intolerant, and are beholden to the worst of the millennialist philosophies. Hence the gory interest in WWIII starting in the Middle East.

Riley's thesis is that religious schools, most of the world calls them madrasas, are pumping out good little believers with outstanding morals and ethics. Never mind the Catholic church sex scandals, since the students are so isolated they have virtually no knowledge or understanding of the issue. Never mind that Bob Jones university only recently allowed interracial dating. Never mind that "pro-life" high powered rifle toting adherents commit murder in the name of God. But I digress. Riley paints secular schools as dens of drug abuse, sex abuse, moral and ethical vacuums, and philosophical deserts. She seems to be saying that Christian madrasas are the only way America can right itself, since the rest of society is unguided by higher principles. Riley also seems to suffer from the same sort of delusion that most of her subjects do; something is terribly wrong with America and religion is the answer. Whoa! Here comes the part about burning at the stake. If religion is the only answer, it follows that only one religion is the answer, if the evangelicals are to be believed. The race is on to become the dominant religion and to form the new theocracy. Unfortunately for the fractured protestants, the Mormons seem to be in a much better position to become that dominant religion.

The book itself is an interesting read, but the screaming omission is that there is no discussion regarding the reason why Religion is the answer. I realize it's a very narrowly focused book, but to paraphrase Sam Harris, just replace the word God with "The Tooth Fairy" every time it shows up in print and you understand the absurdity of churning out graduates from a strict creationist school like Patrick Henry College. PHC specializes in home-schooled children who have been brain washed from an early age. The Earth is only six thousand years old and dinosaurs walked with our recent ancestors! Woo hoo! Riley should have explained why having a theocracy of idiots would make America a better place. Is it because those who survived the new inquisition would all think alike? Is it because we'd have more Christian soldiers to do the bidding of the supreme leader? What about the lawyers from Ave Maria law school who use the Bible as the basis for understanding law? Will they argue that it's okay to stone to death unruly children?

As a cautionary tome, God on the Quad is scary. Millions of minions out to save your soul or burn you to carbon should you disagree with their bizarre interpretation of reality is our future if Riley is correct.

And just to refresh our collective memory, 600 years ago, everyone thought the world was flat, that the Sun revolved around the Earth, and that drowning someone was the best way to tell if she was a witch or not.

I can hardly wait until the New United States of Creationist America is formed. I'll make millions selling kindling.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting (and somewhat biased) look into religious colleges
Prior to starting this book I did not think that I would like it at all; however, I was mistaken. I highly recommend this book for members of the higher education community and those of particular faiths that may be attending college.

"God on the Quad" starts with a rather strange introduction which speaks of "red states" and "blue states" and makes a large number of generalizations about liberals and conservatives that may anger some people. After reading the entire book I could not really determine how the introduction frames (or even relates to) the rest of the book. If you, as a reader, feel that you get offended by political commentary then I recommend you skip the introduction. Starting at chapter 1 the book is worthwhile.

The book starts with a few case studies from various religious colleges: Brigham Young University, Bob Jones University, Notre Dame, St. Thomas Aquinas, Baylor, and a few others. Obviously the faiths of the schools and degree of fundamentalism range from each institution to the next. After the case studies, Riley follows a few themes such as "sex, drugs, and rock and roll," minorities and diversity, and political activism at religious institutions.

The problem I have is that Riley does not hide her biases towards various schools. For example, she writes with a negative voice when writing about Bob Jones University. I truly felt like there was nothing good about Bob Jones University, according to Riley. One reason for this may be because of the way she was treated on the different campuses. I do believe that her research would have been presented better if the biased voice had been removed and equal comparisons had been made.

Another big problem I had with the writing is that Riley makes the assumption that "secular" means "anti-religious" and makes it a strong reoccuring theme throughout the book that secular institutions foster hostile climates for students of faith. While I think she has some merit here, I would've liked to have seen more investigation into this percieved phenomenon. For example, do religious students feel uncomfortable at secular institutions because everyone in their dorm drinks? Or are they uncomfortable because everyone makes fun of them for not drinking? There is a huge difference that would be worth further exploration before actually accusing secular institutions of fostering hostile enviornments when, for the most part, they are trying their hardest to accomodate every single diverse individual.

Finally, this book does provide a lot of insight on why students choose to attend religious colleges and also how religious colleges are expanding and filling a niche in the overall spectrum of higher education.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title?
First, I must say that "God on the Quad" was interesting, but as I read through BYU, Notre Dame, Yeshiva, and others I began to wonder whether Riley was writing for parents looking to find out whether they should send their high school seniors to these schools or if she really was trying to answer "How Religious Colleges and the Missionary Generation Are Changing America". I feel she did have to enlighten others on campus environment, atmosphere, etc, but she did not go far enough into how this generation was going to change America. Like another commenter, I get the feeling she'll have to write another book to get to her original thesis.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Quad & Beyond
Looking forward to a sequel, focusing on how the graduates
of these colleges fared in the "real world" after leaving the
Quad. Otherwise, very interesting and insightful.

Product Description
Judith Brandenburg describes how schools can confront sexual harassment within their own communities and how they can become models that educate students to deal with sexual harassment in the larger social setting. In addition to explaining the theoretical, psychosocial understanding of sexual harassment, she gives schools and colleges the bases to comply with the law quickly and effectively while developing long-term plans of action. The book covers all educational levels and gives special focus to sexual harassment occurring during off-campus activities and to the problem of peer harassment. It guides the reader through existing policies, procedures and educational programmes from around the country, and lists case sudies based on the author's actual experiences. Concluding this work is an annotated guide to print and media tools for change and thorough answers to the ten most frequently asked questions about sexual harassment and schools, such as: how do I get my school to take the issue of sexual harassment seriously?; what are the risks or possible costs to the person bringing a complaint of sexual harassment?; how can a school determine whether it is being effective in preventing sexual harassment and a hostile environment? ; and how can we prohibit sexual harassment without infringing on people's privacy and freedom? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, solution-oriented, highly recommended
This readable and practical book addresses the problem of sexual harassment in educational institutions from multiple approaches.Author Judith Berman Brandenburg weaves together psychological, ethical, legal, sociological, and educational themes.Having held administrative positionsat Yale University and Teachers College, Columbia University, she hasthought long, hard, and sensibly about solving sexual harassment problems. The book covers the development of campus harassment policies andprocedures, identifying three issues as particularly thorny. These are:reconciling a complainant's request for confidentiality with theinstitution's need to take action; retaining records of informal, unsubstantiated complaints that may document patterns of repeat offenders;and the tension between due process and collegial mediation. The bookincludes an excellent chapter on educational programs to combat harassment. Particular attention is devoted to off-campus programs such as clinicalplacements for students and field trips. It's the best book I've found onharassment. An added bonus is its successful blend of ideas suitable forhigher education and primary and secondary schools. I highly recommend itfor anyone in American education who cares about sexual harassment. ... Read more
