Product Description
What principles should be adopted when allocating financial resources within higher education institutions? How do internal and external factors influence resource allocation systems and what impact do these systems have on institutional and individual behavior? How best should expenditure be monitored in universities and colleges?

This book provides a practical guide (from both departmental and central perspectives) to the management of financial resources in institutions of higher education. Following a review of the impact of a changing external environment, a three stage approach to the allocation of resources is outlined, namely: understanding sources of income, application of strategic considerations, and distribution to departments and faculties. Concepts of devolution and formula-based systems of allocation are considered in the context of the culture and structure of institutions, their impact on staff and the way in which institutional and individual behavior patterns are affected. A concluding chapter summarizes themes relating to the management of change and highlights managerial implications. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Heres what I thought
I bought this book to try and help me narrow down those colleges that offer special programs for students with learning disabilities and the book was not that helpful. It does not segment out colleges with specific programs vs colleges with services, big diference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but disappointing
This book is very useful because of the detailed information on hundreds of college programs for the learning disabled. The number of colleges covered has increased from the earlier editions. The disappointment comesfrom the selection of colleges. Some schools with programs are notmentioned; while some that are detailed, seemingly offer little more thanwhat is required by law. For instance, Cornell is included, but not Ithaca;Brown is in, but not Salve Regina. ... Read more

Product Description
There are many guides for academic administrators that explore differing philosophies of administration, theoretical approaches to management and leadership, and new trends in higher education administration. Books such as these can inspire department chairs to develop a major new vision for their discipline or even their entire institution. But in order to make that vision a reality, chairs must know how to excel at the many administrative tasks assigned to them. For instance, how do you cultivate a potential donor for much-needed departmental resources? How do you interview someone when your dean assigns you to a committee searching for an administrator in a different academic area? How do you fire someone? How do you get your department members to work together more harmoniously? How do you keep the people who report to you motivated and capable of seeing the big picture?

This book is about the “how” of academic administration. Based on a series of workshops given by the author in the area of faculty and administrative development, each topic deals concisely with the most important information chairs will want to have at their fingertips when faced with a particular challenge or opportunity. Intended to be a ready reference that chairs turn to as needed, this book emphasizes proven solutions over untested theories and stresses what chairs need to know now in order to be most successful in their administrative positions. ...
