5-0 out of 5 stars The most Helpful insider guide
an Awesome publication that i see as a must have for every IMG to have a crisp clear understanding of not only, the US health system but also, the sequential steps and the corrects Dos and Dont's when applying for the match and preparing personal statments, LOR's and writing CV in a professional acceptable way.

the book is divided broadly in 2 major sections :section 1 deals with attempting to get a residency and all the major caveats

sections 2 : whats beyond this, how is ur life gona be when u go there and more importantly familiarizing the IMG with US health care system so its really a good basic foundation that would be an ice breaker and a gap closer between an IMG who never had an experience in the US and others who know the system.

if you are already familiar with the system or had an externship still this book is valuable
if ur an AMG = u shouldn't be reading this book because it would not add anything to you
lastly its an ECFMG and ACP joint publication with that in mind it really makes no other book competes with it even first aid for the IMGs which has no new editions ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much help, really.
Currently, there are about eight other reviews. They seem to indicate that the primary value of this book lies in the fact that there is no other source of information on foreign universities where the classroom instruction is conducted in the English language. While I appreciate that value, I am seriously disappointed by the fact that most of the cited schools are not the big name schools I had hoped to learn about. Rather, they include such "universities" as "University of Costa Rica, Rain Forest Adventure" with a total "student body" of 15, and "College Year in Athens." These are nothing more than vacations where the students can earn a few college credits. Some of these colleges sound more like businesses than like century-old centers of academe, such as "Webster University Thailand." I also wonder about the wisdom of going all the way to Italy to get a degree from the anglo-sounding "John Cabot University". And I fail to see the point in including the universities in England, as we already know that they conduct classes in the English language. Truthfully, I found this book almost useless. I wanted to know if there was a very reputable university in say, the Netherlands or in Switzerland, that my daughter (who speaks only English) could attend. That sort of information is not included in this book. And while I admit it is not hugely important, the black and white photos in the book look like they are candid snapshots taken back in the 1960s. There is nothing useful or appealing about this book... it was a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on studying abroad!
This book is unique among study abroad guide books because it lists 68 schools around the world that teach in English and offer American-style degrees. There is simply no other book like this one. You don't have to worry about matching the academic calendar system or the language used in the courses if you go to one of these schools.

A second excellent point about this book is that it tells you the level of academic difficulty of each institution by the SAT scores. So, you can find the schools that match you. A third excellent point: it tells you what each school is good at. Some schools focus on science and engineering, while others on humanities or business management. The fourth: this book tells you whether the faculty of a school is available for help and mentoring, or aloof and unavailable.

Other aspects described by this book are tuition rates and financial aid information, housing options, extracurricular activities, and support services, contact information and directions on how to apply, advice on staying healthy and staying safe.

I give this book four stars because I think it can be improved. For example, it would be helpful if the authors were to categorize the colleges by their level of difficulty, their similarity in academic areas, and their cost, etc. Also, I would like to see the section on the academic programs for each school be expanded provide more detail. Another suggestion is to include some feedbacks from the American students who have gone to these schools.

As for the steps and procedures to take for studying abroad, I highly recommend the book, "Study Abroad for Dummies."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I agree with all the other reviews that have been listed. It's a very good, well organised book. There's so little information out there for students who want to study abroad, but this book (thankfully!!) gives you everything that you need.

Having this book, I don't feel like I'm jumping into the unknown anymore by applying to study abroad. I'm so glad that this guide was written!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need
Great book. Great introduction to how to get in to a university outside the US. Everything is laid out in an easy to read and easy to understand format. So far this is the only book that I've seen which is dedicated to people who want to study outside the US for the full four years, not just as a semester abroad (but it would be helpful for those looking to do a semester abroad as well).

This book answers all the little questions that are impossible to find answers to if you are trying to research foreign schools by yourself.

There is a great variety of schools listed: from not so far off (like in Canada) to schools that are literally on the other end of the earth.

Study Away has really got everything that you need to help you get in to a foreign university.

I highly recommend it to everyone!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A world of opportunity awaits
This book is very easy to read and clearly tells you everything that you need to know to get into a school abroad. I wouldn't consider trying to apply abroad without the help of a guidebook and this one is really great.

"Study Away" really helps show the world (literally) of opportunities out there for where you can go to college. I really glad I picked it up because my choices in the United States have been limited somewhat by financial considerations. I had no idea that Americans could even apply to so many foreign schools (and have it be so much less expensive!).

Overall, a very good book. ... Read more

Product Description
Teaching Abroad addresses the question of moving abroad to teach in a cross-cultural university classroom. It discusses the recent flourishing of international education and developments in educational structures and practice, and traces the historical development of, and recent changes in, university education in China. This book explores systemic differences between communitarian and individualistic values as they affect the classrooms of the East and West, as well as in the students' emotional and intellectual sense of themselves and their education. Through research in the field and the author's own experiences in the international American Studies classroom, Teaching Abroad takes up the values of the teacher- and student-oriented classrooms and looks at creative ways to take advantage of each in terms of team-teaching, interdisciplinary inquiry, and group work. It also investigates the use of films and their adaptation from fiction in the interdisciplinary humanities classroom, and deals with various problems of assessment, including examinations, essays and plagiarism. Ultimately, the book connects these issues to the transformation of personal, familial, and national identities in this age of internationalization and cross-cultural education.

Teaching Abroad will appeal to foreign-bound university teachers who are interested in the historical and cultural conditions of a country and in need of practical advice about teaching abroad. It will specially be suitable for teachers who plan to teach in China. International teachers in primary and secondary schools will also profit from this exploration of the cross-cultural classroom and intercultural communication. ... Read more

Service learning, as defined by the editors, is the generationof knowledge that is of benefit to the community as a whole. Thisseventh volume in the Outreach Scholarship book series contributes aunique discussion of how service learning functions as a criticalcornerstone of outreach scholarship. The sections and chapters of this book marshal evidence in support ofthe idea that undergraduate service learning, infused throughout thecurriculum and coupled with outreach scholarship, is an integral meansthrough which higher education can engage people and institutions ofthe communities of this nation in a manner that perpetuate civilsociety. The editors, through this series of models of servicelearning, make a powerful argument for the necessity of "engagedinstitutions". ... Read more

It is clear that, however possible or easy it may be to do a thing,
there is no case for doing it unless it is wanted; therefore the
question of principle must be taken first. In the case before us
the question of principle involves many considerations--aesthetic,
political, social, even religious. These will be glanced at in their
proper place; but for our present purpose they are all subordinate
to the one great paramount consideration--the economic one. In the
world of affairs experience shows that, given a demand of any kind
whatever, as between an economical method of supplying that demand and a
non-economical method, in the long run the economical method will surely
prevail.

Product Description
This new book (CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION INTERNATIONAL 2003-2004:INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ STRUGGLE FOR REPRESENTATION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM) by Christian Kim is very interesting. The struggles of international students at Cambridge University and in the context of the United Kingdom come alive for the reader. There are many important documents and articles included in the book that makes this a historical document in its own right.Christian Kim’s book points out the inadequacies of Cambridge University to deal with the influx of international students and their needs.Furthermore, this book exposes the underhanded policies of the British New Labour government. It would not be a surprise if this book becomes an important impetus for change in the United Kingdom. It seems that Christian Kim desires nothing more than positive change for the benefit of international students. This book is more than a recounting of the valiant struggles of international students, particularly in light of the onerous $500 Visa Renewal Fee that the British New Labour government struck on international students while they were away for the summer vacation. This book is a heart-warming account of the positivity of the human spirit to take on a big unfair power even when the odds are stacked against them. There are a lot of pictures in the book that make events come alive. ...
