WAGONS WEST!

As the Civil War rages, the Hitchcocks head west to Pike's Peak. They've left their Pennsylvania home far behind as they ascend the Rocky Mountains, certain they'll find gold! Thirteen-year-old Eda keeps a secret journal as they travel through hostile Ute country and finally find shelter in a broken-down cabin. With scant food and only howling wolves for company, everything seems strange and frightening until Eda's seventeen-year-old sister Belle gets a job teaching, and Eda and her oldest sister Lucy meet an unusual but friendly family of actors. Eda and her sisters are beginning to settle in when Pa decides the family should return home.

But as they travel down out of the high country, they meet with near-tragedy and are forced to stay in rough-and-tumble Denver. Here, penniless and freezing, they're herded into a tent city with nothing left of their former lives but a few clothes and tattered memories. That's when she meets an "enemy" who teaches her the most important lesson she'll ever learn.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars are you serious?
Having been first introduced to Laurie Lawlor through the "Addie" books and being a great fan of historical fiction, I figured to start reading her "American Sisters" series. This is the first I've read of the series. The first third of the book seems to focus more on the extremely dysfunctional Hitchcock family and the tense family dynamics than their plight in the Rockies.I think even my fourth and fifth grade students would consider it a stretch to believe that even greenhorns could be so extremely "green".Really, four women who know absolutely nothing about cooking and laundry? How in the world did they ever make it from Erie County, Pennsylvania to the Colorado Rockies intact?Eda's meeting and subsequent friendship with Edith, Usylsses, and their state-named children is a little far-fetched but adds humor to the story and makes for an interesting read. The Hitchcock's situation in Denver becomes more believeable, and the account of Sand Creek massacre is accurate.Through the epilogue, we learn about the rest of Eda's life, but we are left wondering what happened to the rest of the family. All in all, it's a pretty good read for kiddie lit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book.
Because of her father's debts, thirteen-year-old Eda Hitchcock and her family are on their way west to Pike's Peak, hoping to strike it rich. After a long and difficult journey, they're finally almost there. Butliving in a tumbledown cabin in the wilderness and losing everything theyown to thieves isn't what they expected. Nothing seems to go right. Edasometimes wonders, will they ever get back home? This was a great book. Itwas interesting, and exciting, and had a likeable main character. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful state
Colorado is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful states of the United States. But there's more to it than just snow-capped mountains. This book explores the complexities of Colorado's landscape and economy.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Colorado" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. And this edition is loaded with several beautiful photographs.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators. ... Read more

Excerpt:Cherry Creek High School (commonly Cherry Creek, Creek, or CCHS) is the oldest of six high schools in the Cherry Creek School District in suburban Denver, Colorado. It is one of the largest high schools in the Denver metro area, with an 80-acre (320,000 m) campus and over 3700 students. Cherry Creek High School has been designated a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education and has received an "Excellent" rating on the Colorado School Accountability Report. In 1950, seven small school districts in Arapahoe County were consolidated to form Cherry Creek School District No. 5, eliminating original School District #19 and making its one-room schoolhouse obsolete. In 1953 the schoolhouse was sold at public auction; and for the next 16 years, it was used as a storage shed. The consolidation brought the eight schools of Ash Grove, Castlewood, Cherry Creek, Cherry Hills (Cherry Creek), Cunningham, Maple Grove, Mountain View, and Sullivan (Mountain View) together for educating elementary students, but Cherry Creek area high school students did not have their own school until 1955. Appropriately, it was named Cherry Creek High School. On September 6, 1955 , the school opened its doors to 364 high school students (grades 9-12) and an additional 349 younger students (grades 7-8) who had to wait until the following year for their own Cherry Creek Junior High School building to be completed. The district bought land at the corner of South Holly Street and East Belleview Avenue in 1965, and built a second junior high school, Cherry Creek West Junior High, which opened its doors in September 1966 to 655 students, although construction was not complete until that November (for example, there was no cafeteria until then). Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:METALLURGY.Professor Frank Weiss Traphagen. Assistant Professor William George Haldane. The aim of this department is to provide a foundation for practical work in metallurgy. In the lecture room attention is constantly directed to the principles involved in the treatment of ores, especially to chemical reactions and the influence of mass, temperature and other conditions upon these changes. In the laboratory, metallurgical operations are given a critical study, and all the resources of the chemical and of the assay laboratories are drawn upon. The purpose is to equip the college with working size apparatus, illustrating the different types of metallurgical and ore dressing plants, and to have these operated by students, who will check up each operation by careful tests in the laboratories.I. METALLURGY. Fuels, Refractory Materials, Furnaces, Iron and Steel.(Metallurgical Engineering Course only.)Fuels. This important subject begins with the study of the theory and principles of combustion, air required for complete combustion, weight and volume of products of combustion, and heat carried away by gases, the work being supplemented by numerous problems. Then the various fuels, solid, liquid and gaseous, natural and prepared, are considered at length. Calorific values are determined from ultimate analyses and compared with results determined by actual experiment. In this connection also the treatment of by-products is taken up. 'Following this, the various types of furnaces, i. e., blast, reverberatory and muffle used in metallurgical operations are studied, individual furnaces being dealt with in detail under particular metals. The subjects of calorimetry and pyro- metry are considered and instruments compared.Refractory Materials. The source and properties ... ... Read more
