5-0 out of 5 stars Class all the Way!
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading "The Class of 58 Writes a Book."Despite the fact that so many of the class of '58 have excelled, personally and professionally, numbering doctors, nurses, lawyers, fighter jet pilots (Don Shepperd) Major Generals (Don Shepperd) and CNN guys (Don Shepperd again!) professors, brokers, artists, veterinarians---well, you get the picture---I didn't expect them to be storytellers. Was I ever wrong.

I never went to Wheat Ridge, but I wish I did.It evoked a time that I'm nostalgic for, even though I was only three years old at the time of graduation. There are so many good stories.Don Shepperd's opening salvo, "Hindu, Shep, and the Fish" was a cross between the wonderful film "Stand by Me" and a fable. The fable I'm thinking of is The Three Little Pigs, who use their own approaches to building a house. Only in this case, it is three underage boys trying out various methods to cadge some beer. And I certainly related to Cindy Carroll's evocative picture of a summer camp, and echo her own indignation that there were, indeed, NO HORSES!What's a summer camp without horses? But they had fun nonetheless, and built memories. That is what this book is about---a tapestry of stories, a tapestry of lives overlapping. There are bittersweet stories, and downright sad ones.A high school class marks a certain point in time, and beyond that moment there are marriages, divorces, births and deaths. I was particularly moved by the tribute to Dave Sutcliffe from his friend, Doug Rhinehart, who drove with him to the first big reunion.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Class of '58 "ONCE UPON A TIME"
The Class of '58 Writes a Book

The book had me hooked from the very moment I began reading it.I was a Wheat Ridge Farmer, Class of '57 and related to many of the feelings and emotions of the writers. My family owned the Wheat Ridge Dairy "the in place" that was mentioned for after school malts and ice cream, for many years.

The Class of '58 Writes a Book is an entertaining synopsis of the lives, times and experiences of the kids growing up in the 1940's and 1950's in the small farming community called Wheat Ridge, Colorado, now a thriving suburb of Denver. The book reflects the "once upon a time" stories of Wheat Ridge students called the Farmers (the school's mascot) complete with the fun, mystery and heartbreak of growing up that everyone goes through but is enticingly personalized in these reflections.A great advantage of the book is that these stories can be read individually in a short description of three or four pages or in a comparative perusal of several at a time. Also the The Class of '58 Writes a Book would make one proud to have grown up in such a wonderful time and place.

Things become complicated when you get past 18.The Class of '58 Writes a Book shows how determination, faith in God and a work ethic born of exposure to small town "Americana" can overcome obstacles and develop the ability to achieve success in life. This is exemplified by the fact that the editor of the book, Don Shepperd, a graduate of Wheat Ride High School and the Air Force Academy is a retired General in the USAF and a CNN analyst for the military.Shepperd is also the author of "Misty" and "Burry Us Upside Down" describing his experience as a fighter pilot in Vietnam.Wow, what an achiever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and fun
At first thought, I was not sure this would work. However, as a classmate it was very interesting and fun to read everyones comments.By keeping my old annual, I could more easily relate to the names after 50 years.
I think it would also be good for anyone interested in reading about what it was like growing up in this era and what happened to many afterwards would be fasinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOSTALGIA FOR A PLACE YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN
Don Shepperd is a Farmer. He became a Farmer in his early teens long before he graduated from the Air Force Academy, long before he flew 247 missions through the flak strewn Vietnam skies, and really long before he became a general and Director of the Air National Guard. Now, 54 years after he became a Farmer, you can catch him on CNN expertizing on things military.
To be a Farmer with a capitol F, you have to have attended or graduated from Wheat Ridge High School located, of all places, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. And the students were known as the Farmers. In fact, to this day the banner reads "Welcome to Wheat Ridge High School Home of the Farmers." Google it up. You will see it is a school of high achievers. And, as you will find in Shepperd's book, Wheat Ridge is as bucolic as its name. It is an area of snow-capped mountains and meadows, cattle and ranches, country roads and golden Aspens.
Farmer Don Shepperd is the editor of the marvelous vignettes found in "The Class of 58 Writes a Book." Each is an original story written by one of the Farmers from the WRHS class of 58. The book has intriguing titles such as "Daddy, Daddy;" "Monkey Girl;" "White Egg, Brown Egg" (which has nothing to do with chickens); "The Slacker Moves On;" "The Kid Who Didn't Fit;" and "Later Life Bag Woman." These true life accounts run the gamut from school achievements and failures to later life achievements and failures.
"58" is one of those rare books that can be opened any place to short but riveting true life tales that run from two to four pages and are packed with events at once hilarious, mysterious, and always poignant.
As they start their years they build tree houses, play Red Rover and Dodge Ball, skate on winter ponds, hide in school lockers that fall over, and many other true life experiences. Then on to triumph and failure in sports, cross-country races on balding tires, hormones rage as they jockey their spiffed up jalopies up and down the main street of Wheat Ridge that had no mayor, no police, no city hall.
Wheat Ridge graduates go on to become CEOs, generals, philosophers, teachers, stoners, nurses, rock star spies in Russia, and into every facet of life imaginable.
Every reader can identify with events and thoughts in this book. As they finish each narrative they will most likely pause as similar events and emotions from their own teen years bubble up. Images will form and for a few moments nostalgia will develop. Whether it is for their own experiences or for a place they have never been coupled with a longing for people they have never met. Maybe both.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION
If you want to know more about the Columbine shootings you can find more information on the web instead of inthis book. This book is very short and uninformative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not accurate
Do not buy this book if you want to know anything about Columbine. You would think that someone with a Master's degree would know how to do some kind of research on a topic they are writing a book about. The facts presented in the book are not accurate.I felt my intelligence dropping a few points just reading it.It pains me to think that someone will read this "book" (for lack of a better word) and walk away thinking they know who the killers were or what really went down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Colum why? High School
A well researched book into the details and description of this incident which is very interesting. It reads like an incident report however and answers the question who, what, when and where. This author and others along with a host of ohter "experts" do not answer the why this happens question? They do not and can not answer this question even though school shootings were going on a decade previous to this more infamous incident. I do recommend The Last Street Fighter, Run Baby Run and The Cross and the Switch Blade which does answer the "why" question with real incidents that happened long before this one. ... Read more
