1-0 out of 5 stars NetLingo
Not what I was looking for.Too hard to use and understand for myself and my teenage grandson.Maybe we need NetLingo for Dummies?I liked nothing about this little book

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have in Internet Industry!
This dictionary is fun and gorgeous! Great format: very light and ergonomic having over 500 pages of invaluable information! Clever design. Everyone in computer industry should have it on the desk, read it during lunch break, have it as a contemporary coffee-table book. You will learn something new even if you think you know all about it. It may open your eyes on terms you have used incorrectly. I am webdesigner with years of experience and I have always thought that "hacker" is a negative hero in the Internet jargon, but I was wrong according to Netlingo Dictionary... I believe that it's newest Net dictionary out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handy, Accessible Guide for Every Computer User
The Netlingo dictionary gives me an enormous assortment of Internet, computing, telecom, and networking terms for reference. The definitions are written in a laid-back, conversational tone. It's as readable and friendly as you can get in this technical area, but it doesn't get condescending or cutesy.I wind up reading the surrounding terms after I've looked something up. I've recommended it to my parents because any computer user will benefit from having the dictionary as he or she moves up the learning curve.Plus, the chat acronyms, smilies, and assicons are hilarious ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The first NetLingo Review
NetLingo has become a wonderful resource for me in understanding what my 'web guys' are talking about.I am somewhat computer saavy, but sometimes get my cookies confused with my bytes. It is nice to finally have a reference beside my 14 year old nephew.I'm getting a copy today for my home office. ... Read more

Who is a typo pirate? Are they related to fat clients? And what is shovelware? The rapid rise of the Internet has changed our language. This dictionary allows you to keep up with those changes by concentrating in-depth on Internet terminology. Featuring over 3,600 jargon-free entries, from the thousands of new abbreviations, technical terms, and user-jargon to terms associated with e commerce, security, and the use of the Internet for business purposes. Useful appendices include country codes, popular emoticons, and popular chat room and email abbreviations. This reference book will prove invaluable to anybody working with information technology from the general Internet user to employees in the industry.Amazon.com Review
On the Internet, nobody knows you're using reference books. Darrel Ince's Dictionary of the Internet will guide readers through the twisty passages of current jargon, slang, and technical terms with aplomb. The dictionary is thorough--over 4,000 entries cover commercial, recreational, and propeller-head (geek) language.

Acknowledging the weakness of ink-and-paper references in the digital age, the book comes with a CD-ROM containing all of the text, linked and ready for Web updates. "Checksum," "gossip architecture," and "Zen mail" all find homes here, and the appendices explaining Internet country codes, common emoticons, and standard chat abbreviations will be welcome by any networked computer. The information is scalable--newbies should get as much out of it as hardcore nerds, and the excellent cross-referencing makes it perfect for bootstrapping self-learners. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a masterpiece
I am a computer science graduate student just starting to work on my thesis in Internet security area.I need to read many papers and need a ready reference to clarify and understand the terms used in the papers. This book has been god-send; at one place it gives all the major concepts organized alphabetically so it is east to search and an index is a great help; it has a ready list of references; it is useful I think. The definitions have enough details to understand the concept and figures help.

Since the terms are reviewed by a panel of world-known experts in security I know that I am looking at reliable definitions and descriptions. The language of the book is so easy to understand that my husband who does not work in computer science, has taken to read this book; he just sits and browses through this book.Take the case of the description of a virus; after the definition, the book describes when and how the term virus was used: ¡°the first published use of the word VIRUS was by David Gerrod in his science fiction short stories which were later expanded and published in the book ¡°When Harlie was one¡¡¡¡¡.¡±, ¡°Fred Cohen first used the term computer virus in a formal way at university of Southern California¡.¡± It gives three references pointing the reader to further information. This is a masterpiece written in a scholarly style yet is understandable with little computer science knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A technical reference
It is a technical reference book, perhaps not for a layman or a casual
user
of the Internet.Details and references (and citations for the
references
within the text) make it an excellent resource. If you are taking
security
certification exam or you are consulting, I suggest to keep a copy for
ready
reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessary reference for all who are online
If you connect to the Internet, then you pose a security risk to others. With the growing dependence of our global economy on computers, it is now a point of civic duty that we all do what we can to implement secure procedures on our computers. It all starts with knowing what the terms and acronyms mean, and they are all found in this book. I consider it an indispensable resource, not only for the definitions but also for the web sites with a focus on computer security.
The contents of the book are also on a CD in searchable PDF form. This is especially helpful, in that you can quickly click your way to an explanation of any term. The dictionary was put together under the guidance of an expert team of computer security professionals, so it is accurate and thorough. It belongs on the reference shelves of every academic and public library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel idea well executed
When I first bought this book I was of the idea that it would help only those people who were well acclimatised with the science of internet security. But I was wrong.
Let me get into the facts and tell you that this book had been a great learning experience for me from the time I possesed it. The most remarkable feature about this book is the variety of topics covered and at the same time the details which have been looked into.
Some terms have been used which a normal reader ignores because they sometimes donot contribute too much to the overall understanding of the concept of the journal or paper.
For example everybody knows about firewall. But terms like these have been well explained and illustrated.
Illustrations are another good point about this book which require highlighting. Almost every page in this book is studded with illustrations which helps even a novice to undestand concepts.
The abbreviation section glossary adds to the feathers.
In all I ma having a great learnign experience. I would definately recommend this book for all IT and comp enthusiasts. Its a valuable possession and shall help in a long way.
A great pece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel idea well executed
When I first saw this book I had the idea that it would be beneficial to only those who are well acclimatised with the science of Internet Security. But I was wrong. This book has been beneficial to me like any other computer book I have gone through. Let me get into the facts.
The most remarkable feature of this book is that care has been taken to include even the commonest of terms which one comes accross reading technical journals but one is ignorant to the actual meaning of them since these terms donot contribute too much to the overall understanding of the concept presented in any paper.
for example we come accross the term 'firewall' so often. but one normally does'nt care to go into the technical details of it.
So I would suggest read this book and findout what firewall actually is.
This book contains both details and variety. I was personally extremely thrilled to find the illustrations in almost every page.
These illustrations helps me ot understand the concepts fast.

Also important is the abbreviation term glossary whcih removes in mind any doubt about the greatness of this book.
With this book I am experiencing a great learning experience and I would recommend this book highly to any computer and IT enthusiast.
Alltogether a great work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a real page turner!Really!
It's an old gag - someone sitting down to read the dictionary. But, with Harry Newton, you actually do want to read the dictionary! The writing is so lively, witty and informative, this is not only a preeminent reference for anyone in telecom, but it's actually a great read. This is the absolute must-have book for anyone in this business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! Get the 18th Edition!
Can't do without it! Don't get fooled...into buying the 16th or 17th edition as the 18th edition goes to press this month.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superior Dictionary worth its' weight in gold!
I was first introduced to Newton's TeleCom Dictionary while serving as a MARS Operator aboard U.S.S. England (CG-22) in the early to mid-80's. This book is exactly what it purports to be - a dictionary for modern day Telecom professionals. It is not designed to fully explain concepts of Telecommunications - rather it is designed to serve as a basic reference for those times when you quickly need to know the meaning of an acronym. From the definition contained in Newton's you can then move on to more in-depth sources of information. A neat feature are the updates via Internet. This book covers a vast and broad area and does it extremely well. It should be a standard reference for all CT and IT professionals. Well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The REAL Telecom for Dummies Book
I have worked in Telecom industry for over 4 years. When I entered this market I knew NOTHING about Telecommunications.I was given the Newton's 7th addition by my mentor.I credit, in part, this book in all its additions to my rapid career growth.Newton's is essential for any training personnel, supervisor or manager in our call center.
As a side note, the humor and laymen's terminology make the book more enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rules The Telecom Acronym World
I have the 15th edition and 17th edition of this book and they are both great.I also own the McGraw-Hill telecom dictionary - Here is a quick comparison of my most prized books that I hope shoppers find useful-

Newtons version covers LOTS of terms, with quick simple, sometimes too simple definitions. For acronyms it rules, if it is not here you probably wont find it anywhere. It is very simple, and 99.99% text.

The mcGraw version 3rd edition also has LOTS of terms, but does not include the funny terminology or interest items that Newtons does. What it does have are TONS of pictures-diagrams that help the definitions. The CD included with the book makes it more complete. The only bad thing about the McGraw Hill book is there are some typos....

I dont think I could live without either one of these books. They are very different in style and hard to compare, but both are great.Simply stated, the Newton dictionary is more QUANTITY oriented and has more terms, the McGraw-Hill dictionary is extremely QUALITY oriented.I would rate them both a 5..... but since the Newtons does not come with a reference CD I had to give it a 4.

This is a Must have book for anyone that works with or wants to know more about Voice and Data.Anyone serious about having a handy reference collection will probably own both this book and the McGraw Hill dictionary. ... Read more

Product Description
The Websters' Dictionary shows you how the big success stories in Web advocacy -- groups like MoveOn.org and Heritage.org, starting from very little achieved such massive success. And how you can too. This book lays it out from the basic to the sophisticated. How to get a domain name (and what domain name to pick). How to create a great website ... or select someone to do it for you. What kind of site will let you use the power of Web 2.0 at the lowest possible cost. What style gives you impact. What content works? How much should you be prepared to spend? What kind of team will you need? It lays out best practices briefly, clearly, picturesquely and accurately. This is the dawning of the Age of the Internet. Be part of that. Become a Webster -- an activist, an operative, or a wonk who is using the Web to transform the world. Spinning silica into worldwide webs of glass and light, the Internet has become a planetary community in need of a global guidebook. The Websters' Dictionary is it -- a cornucopian resource for all compendious world-warpers. -- George Gilder, author of Wealth and Poverty (the Bible of Reaganomics), and the high tech classics Telecosm and Microcosm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Webster's Dictonary, how to use the web
This book is outstanding work, full of informatin to anyone serious on web programs and how to get the most our of their web sites.Very Very high recommendation

5-0 out of 5 stars RequiredReading!!!
Ralph Benko's "The Websters Dictionary" is a primer for utilizing the web for fun and profit. He covers the basics (domain registration, web site building, hosting, etc.) but also considers greater cultural -- and political -- implications of web usage. In short, this is a terrific how-to book and should be required reading for anyone eager to make use of the Web's awesome power to connect, recruit, and persuade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Embrace the change - buy this book!
2008 was the year that politics went digital, witha masterful social networking web-based campaign by Barack Obama thatleft John McCain and the Republican party in the digital dust. Ralph Benko -- one of Washington's premier political agitators on the side of personal empowerment and opportunity - has written a primer that will empower us all with the extraordinary opportunities of the web. 2008 made clear that you simply can't engage in politics in any meaningful sense in the 21st century without exploiting those digital opportunities, and Benko's book is the best I've read in telling us how to do it. A tour de force that combines political insight, tech savvy and decades of rabble-rousing experience in a must-have manual for every agitator and just plain Joe out there with the humble ambition of changing the world. Embrace the change - buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the time and money for anyone using the Internet to help leverage their business or non-profit.
Ralph Benko's "The Websters Dictionary" does an excellent job detailing the power of web 2.0. Benko spent two-years looking at how various organizations, businesses, and campaigns have leveraged their message via the Internet, and has distilled down what works and what does not, in this easy-to-read overview.

I work at Bureaucrash, an organization that promotes activism for freedom. Bureaucrash is small in terms of paid staff and budget, so we utilize the Internet, new media, and Web 2.0 to have a larger footprint. As such, I found Benko's book invaluable, especially as we're transitioning to a more decentralized approach.

Take-aways that can be gleaned from the book that are applicable to virtually any such organization include being clear and concise, understanding your community to better support/encourage it,being transparent to give community a stake in outcomes, facilitating spontaneity, and that content is king. Further advice is to take calculated risks, but to start small and scale up if they pay off.

Rather than advocate a top-down approach, Benko, in "The Websters Dictionary", embraces the ideas and actions that stem from a bottom-up, community-driven approach, and he provides research-backed suggestions on how to make that happen. All of this can be summarized by Benko's statement that "the potential of this medium [Web 2.0] is huge, and I hope that out of this thing comes a million things we can't imagine."

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone interested in how the Web has transformed politics and policy activism
Disclaimer: this book features an interview with me, so I might be biased.
Ralph has done a wonderful job looking at how moveon.org and dailykos and other progressive groups harnessed the power of the web to mobilize millions of people. I learned a lot reading the book. His research and conclusions are solid.
He offers, for the novice, the basics of web site building: domain registration, hosting, how to find a developer, etc. And then, for those already involved, does a great job of looking at the bigger implications of how the Web is transforming, for the better, our politics and our culture. Ralph self-identifies as a conservative Republican, but he is at heart a true populist and the Websters' Dictionary is, at its core, a populist bible for anyone of any political stripe. ...
