5-0 out of 5 stars Instruction Manual
I was looking for a book that I could use to provide non-technical students with basic skills. This book was just what I was looking for and helped me plan out my class. I like the way the book is divided into sections that gradually build. Some information is repeated but this helps students to understand the material. Overall a great book if you want to learn computer basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the reason it was written
I have been teaching people of all ages how to use (including all versions of Windows and Office) and build computers for over 6 years now.I just decided to get a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and was told that I needed to pass the IC3 exams as an introductory course.Thinking that I could probably pass the exams in my sleep, I ordered this book to look over the material anyway just to make sure that I wasn't being overconfident.I learned a couple of obscure things that I hadn't known before and I'm only 1/2 way through the book.It was worth it to me (bought it used).

This book was written assuming that the person reading it knows virtually nothing about how to use Windows or Office. Why does it concentrate on products from Microsoft?Because that is what the IC3 exam will cover.Simple as that - the book prepares you for the exam.

The book does not talk over a person's head - it is plainly written with great examples.Lots of color pictures along the way to illustrate key points too.My only complaint is that it assumes you are part of a class that is teacher lead - which is a problem if you are home-studying like I am.There's no answer key to the questions then, but you should be able to figure out the correct answer as it lets you know which part of the chapter to look in for the answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: This book SUCKS!Do NOT take this course!!!
???Terrible.Absolutely terrible.DO NOT BUY!In this day and age, any person between the ages of 13 and 60 will be quite familiar with all of the concepts discussed in this book.Few people need to be taught how to delete a file or create a word document.I also found the class that I bought this book for to be incredibly boring. It was almost torture because everyone in the class knew all of the concepts we were being taught, but we all had to take the class anyway because there was no way to place out of the course.
???Another major problem with this book was that it's extremely biased towards Microsoft.I fully understand that Microsoft has a monopoly on Information Systems Technology, but that doesn't mean that their software is the only software someone would ever want to use.I use Linux as my operating system, and this book is ignorant of Linux and its users. Some of the excercises we were assigned could only be completed on a Windows computer or required Microsoft Office, and that was very cumbersome.Apparently the authors of this book do not realize that Microsoft does not make Microsoft Office for Linux (surprise, surprise).
???If you know nothing about computers and plan only on using Windows computers, this book would probably be right for you.If you have enough computing skills to navigate to this web page and read this review (and obviously you do), AVOID THIS BOOK AND ANY CLASSES THAT USE IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications
I purchased this book (11th Ed. paperback) to prepare for my CLEP Info Sys and Comp Apps exam. I was able to ace my CLEP by relying primarily on this excellent book. This book provides a general but comprehensive coverage of the entire breadth of computer science and technology and is an excellent test preparation, not only for computer novices and newbies, but also for students with a strong IT background. It has something to offer everyone. It is written in an easily readable and enjoyable format with plenty of attractive graphics and images. The authors have worked hard to keep the material up-to-date and relevant. I have decided to keep this book even after taking my CLEP because I find it to be also a very handy and useful reference book. I understand there is a 12th Edition out there now. I would suggest buyers consider purchasing the 12th Edition. Overall an excellent purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars computers 11th ed by long and long
not a bad book however my lecturer has noticed several factual and historical mistakes about the subject matter which it simply shouldnt have done for a book used by many students.
But the fact that your never quite sure weather what your reading is fact or not is not what gets me. The truley annoying thing about this book is the American propaganda. The little bits that the authors have put in to "prepare" students for when they vote. for instance they say things like "terrorists now are researching ways to destroy one of most valuable personnal and commercial assets- the contents of our disks. They do this by seeking points of vunerability in PCs and servers and by planting destructive viruses......cyber terror is now part of the terrorists arsenal of evil."
what the hell? Did i just pick up a academic book or a copy of the Daily mail!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR A CLASS I WAS TAKING BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE A PRETTY GOOD REFERENCE BOOK AS WELL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
I purchased this book as a text for a college-level CIS introduction course.Although it has very nice enrichment segments, great photos and icons, it is limited in actual educational effect. Many key concepts are not thoroughly taught or taught in such a manner that they are truly reinforced. Also, the quiz questions provided at the end of the chapter are poorly written and oftentimes confusing from a tests and measurement standpoint. Moreover, there are no answers supplied for these quizzes within the text itself.I find the book adequate but nowhere near exceptional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obvious Must Be Needed
As an administrative assistant in a four year university I have noticed an increasing amount of students who have taken an Introduction to Computers Class and does not know how to save a document. There is more that you need to learn in that class and as seniors come to me and ask me how to do things that they should have learned, makes me recommend this book to them.

I have a copy of this book and I use it frequently when I tutor students in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.I also use this book to tutor beginners who know nothing about computers.By the time I have let them read the chapters and done the work at the end of the chapters in this book, they have had a better understanding of computer concepts and terms.

I recommend this book highly as an effective tool for teaching in an Introduction to Computers Class.

1-0 out of 5 stars We know the obvious
I am a college student, taking an intro to Office 97 with this book.If you need an introduction to computers - this isn't the book.Just because you're not a "techie" doesn't mean you have the I/Q of a lab rat-but that's what this book assumes. He reiterates the same conceptsthoroughout the whole book, recycling them until you're consumed withboredom.

To conclude: I'm sure it will not take a thousand page bookfor you to learn how to save a document, my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is an autstanding book of computer for teaching.

1-0 out of 5 stars lousy
This book has numerous omissions. Do not rely entirely on this book, but supplement it with others that you can easily find by searching Google for CS GRE practice (including free practice materials from ETS).

By the way, For the general test, I found Powerprep Software: Test Preparation for the Gre General Test to be a worthwhile buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
Textbooks and notes from past classes would be far more helpful than this book. The only valuable pieces of information are the section describing the content of the test and the practice test. Both of these are available in the free booklet you can download at the GRE site. (The practice test is exactly the same.)

2-0 out of 5 stars looking for CS GRE books? this might help
This books gives you general idea of test and let's you know what are the things you might not be prepared for. I don't have much else to say about this.

Well, I searched for CS GRE books everywhere, couldn't find any; but finally found few books which might be of help if you are giving CS GRE.

You mainly need books for

Introductory programming (Pascal and C)
Logic Design
Data Structures
Theory of Computation
Computer Architecture
Mathematics

some operating system and compiler

So get 5 solid books for these and you will be all set. And here are good books I found for preparing these topics. Finally :-( ( I have only a week left to prepare when I found these books)

Schaum's outline in digital logic
Schaum's outline essential computer mathematics

these two (above) are excellent

and
schaum's outline Data Structures in C++
schaum's outline Operating Systems
schaum's outline theory and problems

are good

All of these books have required theory in them, followed by problems and solutions. Very well explained, easy to follow and just the right amount of info needed for CS GRE.

Hope this helps. Good Luck ~ sameer

3-0 out of 5 stars Other sources for help
My intention with this review is actually not to evaluate this book, but insteado to suggest to other graduate applicants some very interesting sources of information for the GRE/Computer Science test.

The first book I would like to recommend is Fundamentals of Data Structures, by Ellis Horowitz and Sartaj Sahni. It helped me to review subjects like binary trees, hashing, sorting, searching, and graphs.

The second recommendation is Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools, by Aho, A., R. Sethi, and D. Ullman. There are many questions related to context-free grammars in the exam, and this book helped me to solve many of sample questions in the GRE:Practicing to Take the Computer Science Test book.

There are some questions related to digital logic and binary arithmetics. One book very well written that could help on practicing binary operations is An Introduction to Computer Logic, by H. T. Nagle.

In addition, the test generally features some questions with a small algorithm or piece of program, written in C, Pascal or structured english. A very good book, which has helped me not only to practice for this questions, is The C Programming Language, by B. Kernighan and D. Ritchie.

Moreover, there are some questions related to computer architecture. A good source in this field is Computer Organization and Architecture, by W. Stallings.

Finally, a good book that covers almost all the subjects is Computer Science, an Overview, by J. Gleen Brookshear. It is a nice material for a final review, and also comes with questions/answers of binary arithmetics.

I hope this essay be helpful for you as a guide to find material to complement the practicing tests.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but only just
This book contains some sample questions on each topic of the GRE Computer Science Subject Test. After practicing these questions, one can try out the Full-length test which looks and feels exactly like the actual test.

Thisbook will be useful as a last minute review for the test. One can try to dothe sample test and measure oneself before the actual test. However, thedetails of the test and steps to prepare, etc are exactly the same as thoseon the Bulletin, which is availible for free download at gre.org oravailible when you apply for the test.

A more detailed specification ofthe syllabus and some more sample question will be worthy additions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for every K-16 teacher in America
We live in a different world dramatically shaped and influenced by technology, yet the predominant teaching strategies employed in classrooms across the United States have changed very little. David Warlick's Book "Redefining Literacy for the 21st Century" should be required reading for every elementary, junior high, high school, and university teacher in the United States today. That is an extremely strong statement, but it is justified given the importance of the issues addressed by Warlick and the clear, readable style in which the book is written.

"Redefining Literacy" challenges many of the assumptions and beliefs that educators have about teaching and learning, and provides practical ideas for how teachers as well as students can prepare for the future, instead of preparing for the 1950s (as many schools today seem to be doing.) Warlick's point that teachers have GOT to stop asking students to merely "demonstrate their knowledge" with assigned research reports is so vital! With copy and paste skills and ready access to the Internet, anyone can create a reasonably decent "report" about any topic in a relatively short amount of time. The problem, of course, is that much of the content is likely to be plagiarized. We must ask students to DO THINGS with information, not merely memorize and regurgitate it, or spit it out as a fancy PowerPoint presentation or a formatted Word document. We must ask students to engage in the authentic literacy activities of our new century. Developing critical thinking skills and authentic literacy skills is certainly not a new idea-- educational thinkers like John Dewey and Paulo Freire wrote about these things many years ago and in great depth. Warlick's contribution is to put the need for this skill development in the technological context of the twenty-first century. If you are a teacher or want to be a teacher, you need to read this book. ... Read more

This book was the required textbook for a Basic Computer ITE 115 class at a community college.
