Product Description
Literacy today is more than reading and writing. Being literate in the 21st century takes the ability to critically access, interpret, and create meaning through multiple forms of expression. Alternate forms of communication--such as art, music, drama, dance, multimedia, digital media, technologies, and film--play a crucial role in helping students cultivate these skills.

_Literacies, the Arts, and Multimodality_ introduces K-college educators to current research and instructional practices for including a wider range of experiences that help teachers explore how a curriculum rich in these experiences can benefit students personally and academically.

Editors Peggy Albers and Jennifer Sanders argue that we all learn best when engaged in complex, socially constructed, and personally relevant creative composition and interpretation of texts.

This philosophy plays out in every chapter of this collection as contributors provide research and classroom-based ideas for integrating opera into literature study; enhancing understanding through drama; composing through both art and writing; constructing meaning through picture books; bringing filmmaking into the ELA classroom; exploring the pros, cons, and experiences of digital video production.

Contributors include classroom teachers, teacher educators, and researchers in the field who have worked in and against traditional literacy settings to integrate these practices and bring positive change to education. They offer guidance for others who wish to help their students become more literate in the 21st century. ... Read more

Are you still in sleep mode? Here's a book that gets you out of your wait state . . . and welcomes you to both personal computers and the Internet--a book that can tell you about the cells in your spreadsheets, about authoring tools for your Web pages, and whether your Document Object Model is compatible with your browser.

This is the book for you. The Next Step. The shortcut key.

Don't let the computer world confuse you. Whether you need to familiarize yourself with the basic vocabulary of computers or the latest item of tech talk, the Random House Webster's Computer & Internet Dictionary, Third Edition, explains computer terminology in clear, simple language. At last, a book that is easy to understand--but doesn't treat the reader like someone with fewer than 12 function keys on the keyboard.

This is the computer dictionary that:

  • not only understands the experienced hacker, but welcomes the newbie into cyberspace
  • answers your FAQs
  • explains the bells and whistles in your software
  • upgrades you from plain ASCII to Unicode; from vanilla to true color; from crippled version to virtual reality and the World Wide Web

With more than 3,000 essential computer terms, carefully linked with abundant cross references and illustrated with more than 75 clear line drawings, this book will comfort and charm you as it informs.Amazon.com Review
Are you a computer novice, burdened with FAQs? Or maybe youknow the difference between a mouse and a Gopher, but still feeloverwhelmed by the number of technical terms? Even experienced users, fluent in "computerese," come across terms they don'tunderstand. What's a half duplex? What's a command buffer? And what, pray tell, is pincushion distortion?

As anyone who has ever read a "help manual" (surely a misnomer) knows, computerese is a separate language. Philip E. Margolis has used his 20years of technical-writing experience to compile this helpfuldictionary. This new edition reflects the changes in computeresecaused by the explosion of the Net, with nearly 1,000 newentries. Each of the over 3,000 terms, from aliasing to Z-bufferingand analog to zettabyte, is clearly defined in common English andthoroughly cross-referenced. Whether you're a newbie or an experiencedphreaker, you'll learn something new.

Though aimed at the advanced computer user--you don't really need tounderstand load balancing, command buffers, or object-orientedprogramming to check e-mail and surf the Net--the Computer &Internet Dictionary will be helpful to anyone who wants to knowmore about this rapidly changing technology. --C.B. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sets the standard.
I spent a good half-hour comparing this dictionary against the other computer dictionaries on the bookstore shelf, and concluded that this one was far superior.I have not regretted my decision. The definitions areclear and concise. As a computer "civilian," I especiallyappreciate Margolis's indicating when one term (e.g.,"environment") may have more than one meaning in computer-speak;he is careful to distinguish between various shades of meaning. There arelots of cross-references, allowing the reader to grasp the context of andrelationships between terms. In addition, loads of crisp line drawings andtables enhance the book's usability.Everything is well laid out anduser-friendly.Jam-packed with authoritative information.Geeks as wellas novices should find this book extremely useful. (Solidly made, too: thisbook is not going to fall apart on you.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth to buy it, absolutely!
Sometimes I just feel like there are so many tech terms needed to be fit into my brain especially for a CIS student. I start to look for a good computer dictionary for awhile. Some of them are good but out of date. Someof them have lots of words but they look like spelling-check books to me.Until I found this one. It has most uptodate information about computertechnical terms and cover more than 3000 words. The best part of thisdictionary is that it tells you where you should look at the relative wordsof the one you are reading it. Thanks to the author. Excellent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT the item pictured
Just a quick note: I don't think a book by the title, "New Literacies: Changing Knowledge in the Classroom" even exists. If you look closely at the picture above, you can just read that the pictured book is, "New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning,"a book I can't find on Amazon but have here on my desk.

If you click the [look inside] button above, you will be taken to a yet different book, "New Literacies: Changing Knowledge and Classroom Learning".It's NOT the same as "New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning," nor I suppose as "New Literacies: Changing Knowledge in the Classroom," which like I said doesn't exist.

They are titled very similarly and both / all by Lankshear and Knobel, so there is a lot of room for confusion.I hope this helps.Which one will show up if you buy it is anyone's guess.

As to a super brief review, "New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning," - the one I have, the one pictured, but not the one in the [look inside] feature - is very nice, like Lankshear and Knobel tend to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for any teacher or teacher educator
Fascinating book. It's the most accessible and clear account of new literacies that I've read. The chapter "from Reading to New Literacy Studies" succinctly and clearly describes the social, economic, and educational factors that have influenced the evolution of the terms literacy and new literacies. The chapter "Faking It:The National Grid for Learning" is a useful example of what New Literacies (and good teaching) are not.

I would have liked some more connections to current work on epistemic cognition (ala books like Women's Ways of Knowing and Personal Epistemology)--there's a big opportunity to connect digital epistemology to this area of inquiry. But this 'suggestion' doesn't diminish my overall enthusiasm of the book (just add those books to your reading list if you are interested in the applications of epistemology in education).

Overall, this is an excellent book for any teacher or teacher educator who wants some guidance or food for though on using technology in literacy, humanities, or the social sciences--from Kindergarten to graduate school.

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Use Computers
I have used this book as text for a Basic Computer class that I have taught three times for adult students.I have used it both as a preparatory refresher text for myself and also have recommended it for mystudents. They were very satisfied with it also. The best part of thisbook is that it gets down to the basic level and covers computers andeverything concerned with computers on a level that everyone canunderstand. The illustrations are also first rate. I heartily recommendthis book as a basic text for anyone that does not have any knowledge ofcomputers. It is also an excellent review for anyone who thinks that theyknow it all.It is well written, well-organized, and has a wealth ofeasy-to-understand illustrations for all to follow. It covers all aspectsof computers from the basics to the internet. The only complaint I have isthat the binding leaves a little to be desired, however for its cost it isa good buy.

This is a competent book on Computer Science, but just about any introductory CS textbook will cover these topics and many more.If you are familiar with other Schaum's outlines, you'll probably know what to expect. The price is no doubt much lower than most CS textbooks, so this book certainly is justified in certain cases.Nothing terrible in here, but also nothing terribly exciting or original.Worth buying and reading if you are interested in CS as a subject of study and are not required to buy some other CS text for an Intro course.

Product Description

James Paul Gee begins his classic book with "I want to talk about video games--yes, even violent video games--and say some positive things about them." With this simple but explosive statement, one of America's most well-respected educators looks seriously at the good that can come from playing video games. In this revised edition, new games like World of WarCraft and Half Life 2 are evaluated and theories of cognitive development are expanded. Gee looks at major cognitive activities including how individuals develop a sense of identity, how we grasp meaning, how we evaluate and follow a command, pick a role model, and perceive the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Gaming!
In this book I was enlightened to the in-depth world of video gaming. The only video games I remember playing back the early 1980s was Asteroids, so I had no idea about the complexity of the today's "good games" and the amount of cognitive strategy that goes on within the player's mind. In each chapter Gee goes into specific detail explaining selected game scenarios which correspond to a selected set of his 36 Learning Principles. He states that these learning principles, which are evident in video games, can be transposed to classroom learning. He is critical of the current state of the classroom which, in his opinion, still maintains a lackluster skill-and-drill approach to learning which is a very different strategy presented in video games. The principles Gee has developed while observing- and playing- video games is, as he says, " a plea to build better schools on on better principles of learning."

He makes excellent points that I, and I am sure others, will relate to. Learning through hands-on experience can be somuch more rewarding and long lasting, and the scenarios which video games players find themselves working within, activate situated cognition and social learning. In other words, Gee shows us how video games help players learn how to pick up on patterns, learn through the situations they engage within, and operate within a social network where they can synthesize their skills and strategies as a main character in the drama of the game. What I have learned from reading this book is how transformative video game learning can be as compared to passive or outside experience of, for example, listening to a teacher lecture, because players can actually become one of the characters and therefore activate higher levels of learning.

He does mention the issues of violence and gender (how women are depicted) in video games (an area of concern for parents and educators), and in that chapter he briefly provides readers some research based evidence to consider on the effects of violence and genderissues on players. I understand thathe is asking readers to re-consider pop culture's sometimes overblown concerns of video gaming, and take a good look at really what is really going on in video games.

It is a fascinating read and it has caused me to reconsider the hours my teens spend on their video games. Although balance is neccesary, I am priming myself to not be so judgemental in my thinking that they are just "wasting their time" and not being productive. There is more going on than I ever realized!

5-0 out of 5 stars Imperfect book but great resource
There is not much critical theory out there on video games and James Paul Gee provides thoughtful observation on where literacy and learning intersects with video games.A lot of the book has to do with how video games as a new form of literacy, can construct our identities in ways unique to the medium and considers new levels of perception. He cites games like Half-Life, Tomb Raider, World of Warcraft and a handful of others and does a good job of keeping his analysis fairly close to the games.

The only place I would ding the book is that his examples are slightly outdated and this can be expected considering how quickly the video game industry moves but his observations still hold up.Gee has some very interesting ideas about video games without getting too caught up in theoretical terminology, so even though it tends towards the academic, it is still open to more casual readings. It's a good resource for critical theory on video games and well worth the cost.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I haven't finished the book yet, but so far it is boring and full of semantics and long video game descriptions.I would not recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars not fun.
assigned this book for class and not having a good time reading it.have no interest in the subject whatsoever, book is over-repetitive and redundant.get to the point!i agree that learning should be active though, but this book could be a lot shorter.

What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy (2007) by James Paul Gee might be one of the most valuable and timely titles I have read in recent years. Coming to video games late in life, initially to "help" his son with gaming, Gee began to see connections to his professional life as an educator in the virtual worlds created by video games.

Specifically, Gee identified 36 learning principles often found in the best (most challenging, most fun, best designed, most popular) video games that are often lacking in contemporary schools that favor the skill-and-drill approach to deeper, more immersive learning. In discrete chapters, Gee identifies individual games (Tomb Raider, Half-Life, World of Warcraft, Sonic the Hedgehog to name a few) and the principles found in those games that could be applied to school learning.

The ideas Gee outlines in What Video Games Have to Teach Us will not be shocking or revolutionary to anyone who already plays video games. Gamers know that it takes more to play a video game than hand-eye coordination. As Gee underscores throughout this book, gaming is a multifaceted process that requires planning, reflection, strategizing, and even community interaction. In other words, it's impossible to play a video game without learning how to do so.

The key difference in learning a video game is that the learning is more strategic and immersive. Gamers learn by doing and through experimentation. They also learn in strategically effective ways. Instead of having adjust to the difficulty level of a game, the game--through its very design--often adjusts to the competency of the gamer. Schools have not found an effective way to do that yet. The main argument of this book is that video games create active, critical learners while schools often create passive learners.

There is a lot to like about this book. Gee keeps the book grounded in actual anecdotes and experiences and carefully avoids the hypothetical by using his own life as a gamer to explain the principles found within the book. The game play is described as carefully as the learning principles to create a book that gamers and non-gamers will be able to embrace--and understand.

Finally, this book isn't just about playing video games in isolation or even about schools. Rather Gee also looks at the community aspect of video games through their use of shared knowledge and, especially, through the creation of game related affinity groups (communities of sorts formed organically around shared interests). This multi-faceted approach to the subject creates a well-informed and thorough examination of video games, players, and how the ideas found in good video game play and design can be adapted to traditional learning environments to create a more engaging and enriching learning environment for every student. ...
