5-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but good reference on several "alternative" neural networks
This book shows its age in some areas, such as the comments about the feasibility of running SDM neural networks on then-contemporary hardware.Still, it provides good coverage of several non-MLP neural networks (such as CPM, RCE, SDM and RBF neural networks [PNN/GRNN]).Also covered to some degree are fuzzy logic and chaotic systems (such as Freeman's olfactory cortex model). The book's language is very easy to follow, yet proficient programmers should be able to reproduce any of the neural networks described.

Pros:
-Nice variety of "alternative" neural network architectures
-Well written

Cons:
-Getting a bit old (having been published in 1993)

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Money 2005 Deluxe: The Missing Manual
Either you can bumble around trying to locate MS Money 2005 Deluxe features via complex pulldown menus or online help, or you can buy this book and learn quickly and easily how to navigate and understand the entire program.

The book substitutes for the Help file that should have been installed with the software. It also includes information that doesn't seem to be available from online help.Without the book, for example, I'd never have found the screen for adjusting Tax Estimator tax rates for future years, and I'd never have ventured to prune the automatic payee list for fear of deleting related transactions.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT for Business Money 2005
I bought this book to go with the Business version of Money 2005. When I opened up the package from Amazon, I was disappointed to find that this book does not cover Business Money. Now, I've got to go through the hassle of packaging it back up for a refund. Thought I'd spare you the same experience.

I already have the 2003 version of this book, and found that one to be a great help in getting familiar with the old program. It's written for beginning users and some of the tips are real time-savers. However, the chapters about basic record-keeping information for small business owners are unnecessary filler. The 2005 version looks to be pretty much the same as the one I have. So if you're just doing personal finance tracking with Money, it's handy to have.

Now, if someone would please write an easy book for businesses that use Money! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably Good Information
I've been writing computer code since the 1970s and have seen a wide variety of user interfaces - thermal paper rather than a screen, single-color displays, full color displays, mice, pens, keyboards, and other options. User interfaces are always changing and updating and being tweaked. With that in mind, I find it admirable that a book tries to document exactly what the current state of interfaces is - and not too surprising that the book can become obsolete the moment it comes off the presses.

So a portion of the book is common sense that can apply to creating interfaces in any decade. Your interface needs to be easy for a brand new user to use. It should provide "training wheels" for those new to the system, and then ease them into full use. A well done design should account for both elderly users and disabled users.

Various concepts are covered, like:

gulf of execution - mismatch between user's intentions and allowable actions
gulf of evaluation - mismatch systems representation and user's expectations

On one hand you could say these are good foundations for any designer to understand. You want to create icons that users understand without a thick manual. You want users to be able to quickly get the hang of your system and enjoy using it. But on the other hand, the book almost seems to assume that the user has never seen a keyboard or mouse before starting in to the topic. Surely readers know what a menu is, and how to navigate it. I'm all for books covering the basics and then going on to more complex topics, but the book wallows a little too much in those basics.

Also, the language tends to sway between incredibly simple and incredibly dense. Where the book teaches you to identify and speak to your audience, the book itself isn't able to do that well. Sometimes it assumes the reader is a visitor from the 1800s who has never heard of a computer, never mind tried to use one. Then a few pages later the page is describing a situation with incredibly technical language that is unclear even to experienced programmers.

Still, if we assume the purpose of this book is to give an overview about what things a designer should consider when creating a design, the book does that well. It has a variety of graphics drawn from current websites, that will help the content be understandable to web-savvy users. If you complain that some of the tips are extremely obvious, you can give that same complaint about just about any book you read. They have to include obvious tips as well as the advanced ones, so they cover all the bases.

So how to rate this? As an esoteric "overview of how computers should work" I give it 4/5 stars. It has generally accurate information, with helpful graphics, and while the language is sometimes oversimplified and sometimes obtuse, it generally is quite readable.

However, know going into it that the book is meant for this type of an overview. This is NOT a book I would ever give to any web designer or interface designer as a helpful tool to use and keep on the shelf. You can't flip the book open to a section to get tips on designing areas of your application. You can't scan through charts telling you what to do and what to avoid. While many other books are laid out well for this sort of purpose, Designing the User Interface is not.

When I read my many other books on computers and design, I amassed copious notes that I would use in my programming life. When I finished this one, I had accumulated barely a page of notes at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any HCI curious
This book is a must have for any person interested in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction). It constitutes a good introduction and also contains hips of useful tips. I would recommend it for any HCI researcher, designer and/or programmer. It's easy to read, enjoyable since its referrring to a very large number of recent user interfaces. It presents key ideas for designing effective user interfaces for different populations of users. I particularly enjoyed the large number of examples presented and the wide coverage of topics. Well worth the buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
The 5th edition thoroughly updates and improves this valuable resource for students, professionals, and researchers interested in human-computer interaction. The presentation's coherent depth and breadth clarify how the interface mediates our access to information, and the need to match its design to our cognitive and perceptual capabilities. I was especially pleased that my colleagues Shneiderman and Plaisant included a chapter on information visualization also providing a rich list of references on this and other related fields. They make a convincing case for development of new information visualization evaluation tools. The 5th symphony, I meant edition, made me better aware of how mobile devices are changing our world and of the increasing power of YouTube, flickr and other social media. This is a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate HCI students!

As a Human-Computer Interaction University Associate Professor I was delighted with the new edition of Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction (5th Edition).

It was entirely renewed and fully updated.

I have shared this textbook with my HCI undergraduate and graduate HCI students this semester and they liked it a lot and found it touches well and thoroughly current HCI issues!

Ben Shneiderman and Catherine Plaisant present and discuss timely most key HCI theories, concepts, ideas and applications.

I strongly recommend this book for academic and professional HCI courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars SharePoint for Dummies
Seems like a good book so far. Have been chucked into a role requiring SharePoint knowledge and Administration. Have done backend training but nothing for the front end so this book has helped me to get a grasp of what can be done with the front end of SharePoint to make it more user friendly for the people that use it. Havent yet finished the book but has definately helped me so far

3-0 out of 5 stars I still feel dumb.
The book is great! and it helps where it can... This should be more of a review for Microsoft... Why the in the world would you write such a stupid program? WHY?!?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Was thrown into a project and knew little about SP 2003 at the time but this was a good intro and helped me get through at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for users and techies alike...
I've often said that a good Dummies book allows me to get a broad understanding of a product or technology so I "know what I don't know".This title is a classic example of that...Microsoft SharePoint 2003 For Dummies by Vanessa Williams. It's a non-threatening use-focused coverage of SharePoint 2003 that is a good introduction to the topic at hand...

Contents:
Part 1 - Getting the Lay of the Land: Getting to Know SharePoint; Starting with the Basics
Part 2 - Central Portal Administration: Configuring the Portal; Accessing SharePoint
Part 3 - Portal Design: Matching SharePoint to Your Business; Managing Portal Content; Branding the Portal
Part 4 - Build It, and Hope They Come: Collaborating with SharePoint Sites; Document Libraries;

Part 6 - Throw Away the Spreadsheets: Expense Reports; Technical Uses for SharePoint
Part 7 - Maintenance: Monitoring SharePoint; Backup and Restore
Part 8 - The Part of Tens: Ten Ways SharePoint Adds Business Value; Ten Ways to Screw Up SharePoint
Index

Williams goes after two different audiences here, and I'm surprised she pulled it off.She targets the average power user who might have access to build a site on the SharePoint server. With this book in hand, I would agree that a motivated person could do quite well on their own.She also targets tech people who want an overview of SharePoint so that they can get started quickly.Normally you can't mix those two groups and come out with something that's acceptable to either.Again, I think she actually succeeded. If I were going to start building SharePoint sites for a user base, I'd have enough information here to get started with an adequate mental framework of how it all fits.I'm sure I'd quickly need the "1000 page book" (as she puts it) to start pushing the boundaries of what's possible. But for basic "I need something now" sites, I could do it with the help of this book.

I was also impressed that she dealt with the cultural issue of collaboration software. As a long-time Notes/Domino developer, I know and understand all too well that collaboration isn't something you can mandate or force on people.People who get it will gravitate around the software right away. Those who view information as power will horde it and refuse to participate. And it doesn't matter how good of a developer you are or how slick the site is.The application will fail...By addressing these issues, Williams sets a realistic picture of what to expect if and when you install SharePoint.

Good material, and a good way to get your feet wet on SharePoint 2003...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of its type on SharePoint 2003
I am a Microsoft trainer that has taught numerous SharePoint classes. Vanessa's work is the most straightforward intro book out there. She goes a step farther by including simple sample solutions for common issues. All this is a real help to someone trying to get things rolling. All SharePoint admins should keep several copies available. ... Read more

Computer Games I is the first volume in a two part compendium of papers covering the most important material available on the development of computer strategy games. These selections range from discussions of mathematical analyses of games, to more qualitative concerns of whether a computer game should follow human thought processes rather than a "brute force" approach, to papers which will benefit readers trying to program their own games. Contributions include selections from the major players in the development of computer games: Claude Shannon whose work still forms the foundation of most contemporary chess programs, Edward O. Thorpe whose invention of the card counting method caused Las Vegas casinos to change their blackjack rules, and Hans Berliner whose work has been fundamental to the development of backgammon and chess games. ...
