Product Description
This book describes the contrasting economic strategies pursued by conservative and social democratic governments. The current literature on political economy maintains that, due to the globalization of the economy and each country's institutional structures, parties hardly affect the economy. Examining all advanced countries since the 1960s, Professor Boix shows instead that partisanship and electoral politics play a fundamental role in the selection of policies to generate long-term growth and economic competitiveness. The book reinvigorates the claim that democratic arrangements matter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Electoral Politics Impact Public Policy Formation
Boix contends that parties and electoral politics matter in regards to public policies dealing with economic growth and employment. He contends that strategies differ between conservative and social democratic political regimes.Boix contends that conservative parties will pursue strategies which minimize benefits for lower-skilled workers while at the same time minimizing taxation for higher skilled workers while at the same time minimizing taxation for higher skilled workers in the hopes of spurring private investment.Social democratic parties pursue quite different strategies. They seek to increase the wages and skills of workers through public investment in things like education etc. though increased taxation on those more skilled, higher paid workers.Boix contends that such policies can lead to a split between lower-skilled workers on one hand and higher skilled workers on the other. The parties then view for control "over the center" (See Downs 1957).Then, depending on control of the center, specific policies - conservative or social democratic - will be pursued.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pragmatical approach to different ideologies
In this book, Carles Boix has teached us with very rygourous tools, to consider the ideological bases and differences between social democracy policies and conservative ones. His sarchastical (and great) sense ofhumour can not be hidden all the time. When you find it, you enjoy thedouble with the book. ... Read more

Product Description

This book outlines and evaluates the political thought of the Conservative Party through a detailed examination of its principal thinkers from Harold Macmillan to the present.

Traditionally, the Conservative Party has been regarded as a vote-gathering machine rather than a vehicle for ideas. This book redresses the balance through a series of biographical essays examining the thought of those who have contributed most to the development of ideas within the party. The chapters benefit from archival research and interviews with leading Conservatives. The recent revival of Conservative fortunes makes the book particularly timely.

The book begins with an introductory chapter explaining the role of ideology in the Conservative Party. It then traces the political thought of the Conservative Party through its principal theorists since the 1930s. These are Harold Macmillan, R. A. Butler, Quintin Hogg, Enoch Powell, Angus Maude, Keith Joseph, the ‘traditionalists’ (Maurice Cowling, T. E. ‘Peter’ Utley, Peregrine Worsthorne, Shirley Letwin and Roger Scruton), Ian Gilmour, John Redwood and David Willetts. The book concludes with an overall assessment of the political thought of the Conservative Party and the relevance of past debates for contemporary Conservatism.

The book will be of considerable interest to academics and non-academics alike; for those who have a special interest in the Conservative Party but also for any student of contemporary British Politics.

Product Description
This text is an analysis of the nature of power within Britain's two major parties. The primary function of the book is to examine in detail the way power was distributed and organized within both the Conservative and Labour parties up to 1963, taking into account the historical precedents established before the turn of the century. His ultimate conclusion is that despite the vast differences in origin, social composition and formal structure, both parties' acceptance of the rules and conventions inherent in the governmental system means that they are fundamentally similar in outlook, organization and structure. ... Excerpt: The New Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation, or New JEWEL Movement, was a Marxist Leninist vanguard political party in the Caribbean island nation of Grenada. The movement conducted a successful revolution in 1979 and ruled the country by decree until being deposed in 1983. The New JEWEL Movement (NJM) was formally established March 11, 1973 with the merger of the Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation (JEWEL) and the Movement for Assemblies of the People (MAP) led by young lawyer Maurice Bishop. From 1973 to 1979, the NJM was an opposition political party active in Grenada. During the 1970s, the political situation in Grenada became increasingly polarized and violent. In the late 1970s the NJM formed the National Liberation Army (NLA) also known as "The 12 Apostles". Twelve men were sent to Guyana for secret military training in preparation for the overthrow of the government. In 1979, the NJM launched a revolution against the government of Sir Eric Gairy while he was out of the country. The NJM seized the military barracks, radio station, government buildings and police stations across the country. Maurice Bishop then suspended the constitution and announced that the NJM was now a provisional revolutionary government (see People's Revolutionary Government) with Maurice Bishop as Prime Minister. Shortly after taking power, the government turned to Cuba for assistance. Cuban construction workers were brought into the country to assist in the construction of a new internation... Excerpt: The Jersey Democratic Alliance is a centre-left political party in Jersey. With the prospect of ministerial government and the creation of an executive and opposition, it formed as a political party in April 2005 at a mass rally, with the intention of fielding candidates in the elections of October and November 2005. The party was founded by Senator Ted Vibert, a returned expatriate and veteran activist in the Australian Labour Party, who drew about 1,000 people to the rally, recruiting several States Members and numerous others. Later in 2005 Senator Vibert announced that, on medical advice, he would not be standing for re-election on the party platform. His successor as head of the movement, Tony Keogh, was also subsequently obliged on medical advice to withdraw as a candidate and step down. Deputy Geoff Southern was elected to the vacant chair. Some members feared that the party would move too far to the left, and formed the Centre Party, which they saw as 'remaining true to the original vision of Senator Vibert' The party produced a manifesto of policies for the 2005 Senatorial Elections. This manifesto has since been a major source of ideas for the non-JDA Council of Ministers, ironically. Geoff Southern and Denise Carroll stood for Senator, but were unsuccessful polling 10th and 13th of the fifteen candidates with the top six elected. The Jersey Democratic Alliance followed the Centre Party in announcing that Deputy candidates would not be selected by the party. Geoff Southern was re-elected to serve St Helier district 2, Judy Martin ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1743783 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Conservative Party (in Spanish: Partido Conservador) of Chile was one of the principal Chilean political parties since its foundation in 1851 until 1949, when it broke apart. In 1953 it reformed as the United Conservative Party and in 1966 joined with the Liberal Party to form the National Party. The Conservative Party was a center-right party, originally created to be the clericalist, pro-Catholic Church group. The Conservative Party's origins go back to the fall of Bernardo O'Higgins' government in January 28, 1823. The Chilean political situation during those years was divided into six main groups: the pelucones, conservatives who supported authority and stability over personal freedoms; the pipiolos, who supported personal freedoms even over stability; the liberales, moderates who supported personal freedoms; the federalistas, mainly liberales and pipiolos who also supported a federalist system similar to that of the United States; the o'higginistas, supporters of O'Higgins, who had gone into exile; and the carrerinos, supported of O'Higgins' old enemy José Miguel Carrera, who had been executed in Argentina. After the abdication of O'Higgins, the new government of liberal Ramón Freire called for new parliamentary elections. These were won by moderates, who obtained 31 seats out of 58. The pelucones received only 4 seats, and were therefore the smallest ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8467475 ... Read more
