5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
I am a practioner in locking diode-laser frequencies to very high finesse optical resonators, and this is one of the most useful and interesting books I have.It is full of theoretical insights and practical guidance that are directly applicable to experimental implementation. It is amazing how such a concise book is packed with advanced/innovative topics such as nested loops, parallel feedback, and measument of open loop gain with closed loop operation. At the same time, it explains fundamentalS in a clear, user friendly manner.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
I'm a physics grad student and needed to frequency stabilize a laser using a rather complicated feedback system.I had no controls theory background but needed to "get up to speed" fast--this book did it!

If you are faced with designing a working feedback system and are not a controls theory expert, this book is the single most useful reference you would ever hope to find. The explanations are intuitive and the practical advice indispensible. This book saved me many weeks on the learning curve.I was able to understand and measure the most challenging aspects of my particular system and clearly see how to predict performance.

It's very streamlined: the emphasis is clearly to deliver the relevant information with the least amount of overhead. As such, the only missing part of the book that I wanted is a list of references.Recognizing the insight of the authors, I would have liked a list of their favorite controls publications!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you need to get started
Here was my assignment:

Make a proof of concept system that points a laser at a moving target.

My problem:
I knew how to write the software, I knew how to put the hardware together, but, I had no idea what to put in my feedback loop to make this thing track.

Oh yeah, I had to do this in two weeks.

So I read part of this book (my suggestion is start in the middle and read the math section when you /need/ to understand something in more depth) and I completed the assignment on time.

End result: I am not an expert on control systems theory, but by reading this book, I was able to get up and running in a matter of days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eminently useful, from beginner to user in 3 days!
This is truly an excellent book. Speaking as a scientist that uses feedback loops as merely one component of experimental apparatus, this book contains everything you need and nothing that you don't. It contains explanations of analog and digital systems and illustrates these with practical and common examples.

This is the first book I give to graduate students and within three days they are up to speed both with the language of feedback control theory and the principles. Moreover the explanations provide an intuitive understanding of important concepts and as a result are not easily forgotten. I highly recommend it to all designers, builders and users of feedback control systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning engineers!
I had my company purchase this reference to aid in the design of process systems. Rather than ask coworkers and receive vague or simplified answers, I ordered the book. The first two volumes are essential for a beginning mechanical engineer to have in the office library. Volume I covers equipment and components, and Volume II covers its usage, design, and purpose/significance. The detail of the book is excellent, especially in the decisions of selection and sizing.

Pages are loaded with flowcharts, diagrams, pictures, equations and everything else expected in a reference manual. A variety of contributors keeps the material lively and easy to read. Sections are clearly labeled, with equally clear subsections that make finding information quick and easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone in Industry
I had borrowed the same book, except the 3rd edition as a reference to bring to my Professional Engineers exam and liked it so much that I had to get the most recent version.
This book not only yields the why and how. It also goes into the cost of certain process instruments (least to most expensive). On top of that it outlines general physical placement, and in what applications the transmitters are best suited.
This is just a great all around book to have in your office, which will enable you to make more educated decisions about your given process applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding work!
This volume of Bela Liptak's "Instrument Engineers' Handbook" series is a phenomenal piece of work.Written to help newly-minted engineers come up to speed with practical applications in industry, it is a masterpiece of technical content and outstanding readability. What impresses me the most about this work is how Liptak's editorial hand has wrought a text accessible to a wide range of readers yet uncompromising in its technical scope.

As an instructor of Instrumentation at a two-year technical college, I have had my students use this book -- both the third and fourth editions -- as their primary source material for their study on measurement technologies. The fact that my students (who are not being trained as engineers, but technicians) find this book of significant value to their learning is a testament to its writing quality.

If I had anything negative to say about this book, it is that writing style betrays its collective authorship. This book is a compilation of chapters written by different authors, with Bela Liptak as the editor-in-chief.As such, style and presentation varies a bit from chapter to chapter. This should not discourage anyone from buying the book, though. It is a must-have for any professional in the field of industrial instrumentation and automation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Reference - From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control

The book cover almost every single instrument used in the process industry for Process measurement and Analysis of the most common process variables. The book covers Flow, Level, Temperature, Pressure, Density, Safety and Miscellaneous Sensors (Vibration, Shock, acceleration, torque, noise, etc.)

One of the aspect that I find more appealing is that at the beginning of each chapter you find an application and selection oriented overview and an orientation table for the process variable covered in that chapter of the book. The tables list all the different types of sensors and summarize the features and capabilities, as well as approximated prices, accuracies and characteristics of each one. If you need a sensor for a particular application, you can narrow your options and then go to the sections of the book that covers in details the selected sensors.

If you work with Industrial Instrumentation you will find this book to be a very valuable tool in your day to day job, either if you specify, install, maintain or operate them.

This handbook has almost 2000 pages of really useful information.

I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best in the field, and it is really an Excellent reference for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related withtheir Industrial applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars InstrumentEngineers Handbook Vol1
Excellent book. I second Mr. Hills comments, although I have recently purchased the books based upon comments Mr.Liptak has made in the control mailing list. It is a very good investment. The book is easy to read/understand, covers the full spectrum of instrumentation, give relative costs and companies manufacturing the items. It is a good first book to turn to, and will save me much research time. I wish I would have known about it earlier. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book to study the material
This may be a good book if you already know all the material and just need a review before the exam.

The book is NOT designed properly for studying or for reference.

It looks like ASQC is afraid to provide people with study material.Since the material being covered is so easy, it needs to be presented in a confusing manner to make it seem hard.

This book may be a big step forward in bringing the information together, but it is not a good book by any stretch of the imagination.

The organization for a book designed for studing is simple:

1. Define the material to be covered and expectations.
2. Cover the material.
3. Present sample problems (from easy to hard)
4. Present answers to sample problems.
5. Present Mini-sample tests (with clear directions for exam conditions and times -- creating and getting used to the pressure environment is essential to studying for an exam).
6. Comprehensive CQE sample exams (full 5 hours long). These practice exams should be designed to help students learn to adapt to the exam conditions.

This book covers steps 1, 3 and 4 only.It does not do a good job of the remaining steps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to have if you want to pass CQE
Excellent prep for the CQE exam.Jagdish takes the CQE bibliography line item by line item and gives you the requirements/answers need to pass the exam. It is very easy to follow-through and keep your idea focused onsubject matter. For those not preparing for the CQE or new to the Qualitymovement, this text is an even more impressive summary of what all levelsof management should be doing in all of their endeavors. As the bookexplains, Quality is first a belief system, a mind set, (if you do notbelieve in it, you won't reach it) then it is a set of tools and process toachieve what ever your goal may be. I highly recommend this book to QualityEngineers trying to get CQE and other Quality professionals alike! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to gain an Appreciation of the Dynamic Nature of Chemical Processes and Develop Strategies to Operate and Control Them

This book successfully teaches how to analyze dynamic chemical processes and develop automatic control strategies to operate them safely and economically. Rather than simply present theory topics and develop analytical solutions, this textbook uses "interactive learning" through computer-based simulation exercises, employing for this the very popular "Matlab" engineering software package, and the "Simulink" block-diagram simulation environment. Introductions to both "Matlab" and "Simulink" are included in the book.

Each chapter of the book is followed by a series of "learning modules" that serve several purposes: some focus on software tools, while others focus on particular control problems.

An introduction to process control and instrumentation is presented in chapter 1. The development and use of models is very important in control systems engineering, and fundamentals models are developed in chapter 2, including the steady-state solution and linearization to form steady-state models. Chapter 3 focuses on the dynamic behavior of linear systems, starting with state space models and then covering transfer function-based models in detail. Chapter 4 covers the development of empirical models, including continuous and discrete transfer function models.

Chapter 5 provides a detailed introduction to feedback control, developing the basics of feedback systems, PID controllers, and methods of analyzing closed-loop stability. Chapter 6 presents methods for controller tuning. Frequency response analysis techniques, important for determining control system robustness, are presented in chapter 7.

Model-based control leads to improved control loop performance, and one of the clearest model-based techniques (Internal Model Control o IMC) is presented in chapter 8. The PID controller remains the most widely used controller in industry, so chapter 9 is very valuable since it shows how to convert internal model controllers to classical feedback PID controllers.

Chapter 10 develops two widely used control strategies: Cascade and feed-forward control. Chapter 11 presents auto-tuning and gain scheduling, two methods used to deal with poor performance due to changing operating conditions and poor tuned control loops. The phenomenon of reset windup and the development of anti-reset windup strategies are also presented in this chapter.

Chapter 12 presents the split-range, selective, and override control strategies, which are used when we need the control loop to be able of switching between manipulated inputs or select from several measured outputs. Chapter 13 deals with the effect of control loops interactions, while the design of multivariable controllers is developed in chapter 14.

Chapter 15 presents the challenging tasks encountered when developing Plant-wide optimization and control schemes. Chapter 16 presents the most widely appliedadvanced control strategy: Model Predictive Control (MPC).

Even though the book is designed for Chemical Engineering students, I truly believe that this text would also be suitable for industrial practitioners and students in mechanical, nuclear, industrial, and electrical engineering. I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. My academic background is in electrical and electronics engineering (I am an Electronic Engineer), not in chemical engineering as might be the case of the usual reader of this book, but working in the Oil & Gas Industry all this time, I have been dealing with Chemical-Process Control issues in a day-to-day basics. I found this book to be a very useful reference and refresher to gain a better understanding of Modern Process Control Applications.

If you are a practitioner of Process Control you may want to consider also "Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Fourth Edition, Volume Two: Process Control and optimization" by Bela Liptak, for its practical and comprehensive coverage of Process Control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice detailed Book for Process Control
This book presents its idea very clearly and it's an easy read! I would say it's a must have for all process engineers!

If you are an instructor, please use a different book. ... Read more
