2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Hardware and Software Interfacing
To be honest got overwhelmed with the assembly code bases for the HCS12.I harldy used this book for my class as if I recall correctly the book went more in C approach on hardware programing, and we used assembly.In time I'll go back and relearn what I applied in class, but using C.So hopefully this book will be more handy then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for HCS12/9s12 Book
I always seem to find the right book at the at the right price at amazon.This time was no exception. I went with amazon because of the free shipping and it arrived in a timely manner.I was not disappointed.The book arrived in described condition, and I hope to get my moneys worth out of it. Thanks Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book freescale should have wrote
Fantastic reference.
Great examples in asm and "C".
Good explanations.
A must have if you are using this family of MCU's.
Covers tools as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a rank novice
Let me state that I'm a rank novice to microcontroller programming and embedded systems.This book seemed quite comprehensive, going as far as recommending demo boards and compilers to run the examples in.There were a few errors (i.e. Chapter 14, table 1 and figure 1 are the same) but the code all seemed to compile and run ok and the CD provided all of the source code for both assembly and C.All in all this book covered pretty much everything I wanted it to and would recommend it for any student looking to use the new HC9S12 family of microprocessors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the market for the HCS12
I'm an Electrical Enigineering student and do a lot of work with the Freescale MC9S12 family of 16-bit microcontrollers.After using just about every other book on the market for the HC(S)12 family, I can honestly say that this one is the best - by far.It's definitely the only one you will need on your desk if you work with these chips.The thing that makes it so useful is the wealth of code included in the text - both in assembly and C.Most books on the topic just include assembly, which is a fine place to start, but most of my work is done in C.So having the addition of the extra language is a huge selling point for me.And this book is for JUST the S12 family; it doesn't try to confuse things by adding the older HC12 family.The author includes code for everything that he goes over; and not just one or two snippets, there are many full examples for each of the topics covered.The author thoroughly discusses all of the hardware aboard the S12.It's like he takes the Freescale User Guides, interprets them into a form that's very easy to understand, and then gives you the code, both in assembly and C, to perform the task that was just explained.The author chose to use AsmIDE, MiniIDE, and GNU C for the code in the book.These software tools are freeware which makes the book more appealing to students or those without high-dollar development tools.In addition, they're included in the CD that comes with the book, and since they are freeware IDE's, they have no memory size restriction like the tools included with many other book CD's.Also, a plethora of practical applications are presented such as interfacing the S12 with stepper and DC motors, Servos, keypads, LCD's, external memory and much more.It also explains how to program the onboard Flash memory using both the resident booloader and a BDM.No other book that I have found even comes close to presenting just these two topics as well as Dr. Huang does.Before I had this book, I spent weeks trying to figure out Flash programming and Interrupts.This book makes it simple.Also, if you're just starting out and not familiar with a programming language, this book begins at the ground level introducing assembly and C.Basically, this is THE textbook on how to make the HCS12 microcontroller work.I use mine constantly and all of my other books just sit on the shelf - honestly.Come to think of it, the copy I have isn't even mine but my professor's :) To sum it up, I love this book because it's completely up-to-date, easy to use, and applicable to actual applications that one is likely use with the HCS12.You can tell that Dr. Huang actually uses the S12 and knows what he's talking about; not just a professor writing a text for an academic audience.This book is completely thorough and made to be used in the field.Money well invested!Thank-you Dr. Huang for such a great book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars bloated
Considering the book is presented as an introduction to the HC11, one would think the author would cover the assembly language in more detail. Instead, there is only one chapter devoted to HC11 assembly. The author also includes a chapter on C programming. Given that most are going to program using assembly, the C programming chapter seems extraneous. To his credit, the author does include many examples, but proficiency in HC11 assembly is a must.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse Book Ever
Absolute waste of money. The Motorolla website has more information than does this book. The author has made many many mistakes on about 60% of his sample problems. DON'T BUY.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great code examples
This book has great examples of coding.The book will step through an example, then give more examples for you to try with solutions.The book's appendix is packed full of good references.It includes the assembly language op codes with details on the CCR changes, and ASCII table, review of binary and 2's compliment arithmetic operations, and more.This is a great reference or addition to any books you currently have. ... Product Description
In the usual process of control system design, the assumption is made that the controller is implemented exactly. This assumption is usually reasonable, since clearly, the plant uncertainty is the most significant source of uncertainty in the control system, while controllers are implemented with high-precision hardware. However, inevitably, there will be some amount of uncertainty in the controller, a fact that is largely ignored in existing modern advanced robust control techniques. If the controller is implemented by analogue means, there are some tolerances in the analogue components. More commonly, the controller will be implemented digitally, and consequently there will be uncertainty involved with the quantization in the analogue-digital conversion and rounding in the parameter representation and in the numerical computations. A failure to account for these uncertainties in the controller may result in a controller that is "fragile". A controller is fragile in the sense that very small perturbations in the coefficients of the designed controller destabilize the closed-loop control system.
This book collects a number of articles which consider the problems of finite-precision computing in digital controllers and filters. Written by leading researchers, topics that the book covers include:
- analysis of fragility and finite-precision effects;
- design of optimal controller realizations;
- design of non-fragile robust controllers;
- design of low-complexity digital controllers;
- analysis of quantization effects in fuzzy controllers. ... Read more

Product Description
Embedded systems are informally defined as a collection ofprogrammable parts surrounded by ASICs and other standard components,that interact continuously with an environment through sensors andactuators. The programmable parts include micro-controllers andDigital Signal Processors (DSPs). Embedded systems are often used in life-critical situations, wherereliability and safety are more important criteria than performance.Today, embedded systems are designed with an ad hoc approachthat is heavily based on earlier experience with similar products andon manual design. Use of higher-level languages such as C helpsstructure the design somewhat, but with increasing complexity it isnot sufficient. Formal verification and automatic synthesis ofimplementations are the surest ways to guarantee safety. Thus, the POLIS system which is a co-design environment for embeddedsystems is based on a formal model of computation. POLIS was initiated in 1988 as a research project at the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley and, over the years, grew into a full designmethodology with a software system supporting it. Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLISApproach is intended to give a complete overview of the POLISsystem including its formal and algorithmic aspects. Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLISApproach will be of interest to embedded system designers(automotive electronics, consumer electronics and telecommunications),micro-controller designers, CAD developers and students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for college junior/senior level!
I use this book to teach a junior/senior-level microcontroller class. Actually, there's enough material for a two-semester course, and the coverage of the HC12 is the most complete I have seen. It includes useful code for interfacing with many peripherals, from simple LEDs to CAN networks, but it also covers more theoretical problems, like multiprecision operations.
The instructions are presented grouped by category (addition, subtraction, data manipulation, branch etc.), with nice summary tables, so with a few bookmarks it turns into a great reference.
One cannot get the real benefit of this book without an assembler and simulator - I use the free assembler AsmIDE by Eric Engler and the free simulator SIMHC12 by Tom Almy, both available from the web. Ideally, one would also want a project board, to run programs on a real HC12. A few boards are described in Ch.3 (but they are not free - my own choice would be the CME-12B32 by Axiom, costs $200).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners butgood reference ...
This book is not for those just starting out in assembly language programming.This was basically my first time programming in assembly and this book was not a big help.It only skimmed the surface giving a general description of all the components of the 68HC12 microcontroller with no concrete examples to help visualize what was going on.

The chapters on interrutps, timers, parallel IO, and serial IO were not very clear and could use some more clear and simple examples to follow.

This book would make an excellent reference for someone who knows what they are doing already as the descriptions of the different components are quick and concise. ... Read more

Product Description
PIC Microcontrollers are present in almost every new electronic application that is released from garage door openers to the iPhone. With the proliferation of this product more and more engineers and engineers-to-be (students) need to understand how to design, develop, and build with them. Martin Bates, best-selling author, has provided a step-by-step guide to programming these microcontrollers (MCUs) with the C programming language.

With no previous knowledge of C necessary to read this book, it is the perfect for entry into this world for engineers who have not worked with PICs, new professionals, students, and hobbyists. As MCUs become more complex C is the most popular language due to its ability to process advanced processes and multitasking. RTOSs, that is a need to know for engineers, is also discussed as more advanced MCUs require timing and organization of programming and implementation of multitasking. The book includes lots of source code, circuit schematics, and hardware block diagrams. Microchip's PICDEM Mechatronics board is used to detail the examples throughout the book.

*Focuses on the C programming language which is by far the most popular for microcontrollers (MCUs)
*Features Proteus VSMg the most complete microcontroller simulator on the market, along with CCS PCM C compiler, both are highly compatible with Microchip tools
*Extensive downloadable content including fully worked examples ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually teaches embedded C!
Conclusion:
This was the book that "got me over the hump" and I am now comfortably programming PIC microcontrollers in C using the CCS compiler.Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and think that the price is very reasonable for the knowledge that you gain from this text.

Comments:
If you know about embedded systems, you know that they are the most basic elements of circuitry.All they are is a chip and you have to figure out how to make it "Go" and do something useful.Just getting it to turn on takes an organized act of programming and hardware together.By contrast, most books on learning C programming start with the almost famous printf ("Hello World"); program that requires not only that the processor be running, but that it have some kind of output device (Monitor, printer, etc.) attached to it and be working.In other words, this is practically impossible to accomplish as you have to have a completely functional system and a high level of proficiency in programming before you can even start to learn how to program.I own a sizable stack of books on learning C and they all subscribe to this same backwards technique and have all proved useless toward actually learning C on embedded systems.Martin Bates book is the first one that I have read that starts with turning the processor on and takes you through turning an LED on which is a realistic example of a first C program with a microcontroller.You already have a half-dozen or so projects under your belt before you see a printf statement, which is the ONLY way to do it in an embedded world.

I don't really have all that much negative to say about this book.It does use the Proteus simulator for most of the projects in the beginning, which I elected not to use and to do it all in actual hardware.I am not interested in trying to learn two tools at the same time, so this caused me to have to "modify" the programs slightly to run on my hardware.This was ultimately a good thing and helped me learn, but it is notable.The middle section of the book uses the actual hardware from the Microchip PICDEM Mechatronics board that has motors and stuff on it, which makes that part kind of fun to do.

Another thing that I would like to address is the other reviews talking about the membership to the website and all of that.This is not a required part of the curriculum and is barely mentioned.I never looked for it as I didn't need it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Need to focus on programing
I purchased and read the book and was a bit disappointed in the author. I felt he talked more about the developed tools then programming. Not all users own CCS software to write C codes and I felt the author should have cover more on the programming of how to set up header files ect. I use Hi-tech software for writing my C codes and not all of the codes in his book worked with Hi-tech software. I also went to the web pages that the author mentions in his book and I could not get on the web page. I would rate this book very low unless you have the CCS software to work with this book. This book made me much wiser on the purchase of my next book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A manual not a textbook
I consider this to be the worst kind of textbook, unsure of what might be a reader's previous experience, at one and the same time assuming certain information while supplying information that would likely be learnt at the same time as the assumed information. It is vague in its starting position, theoretically weak in its content, and constituted mainly from material that is available in any decent C-language book like K&R, the manual for a compiler targeted at the processor, and the data sheet from the microcontroller manufacturer. Books by the likes of Wilmshurst or Wolf are much better, and better value.

2-0 out of 5 stars False advertisement
The book itself is fine and I got it, but I specifically ordered this book because it said that it would be here that friday after I ordered it. Well it took about a week longer than it said. I missed my homework assignment because of this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised - beware
The printed content of this book seems reasonable for the price if a bit lower level than expected.However, the book claims to provide membership to a web site that would provide additional specific tools for PIC use and applications.This access is not available.The tools are not available.Attempts to contact the author and the publisher to resolve this issue went unanswered.Amazon customer support could not resolve this issue either. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Close but no Cigar..
This book will only take you so far. Has good chapter on assembly language programming, and also lots of hardware interface examples, even a few introductory type projects at the end of the text, but one big problem thatwill hold *ANY* beginner back. The source code examples presented is notprovided with the text and is not available to download from the web,making it harder to actually try out the examples presented in the text.When contacting the author about gettingthe source code, his commentswere "I don't have the source code.I would need to retype theexamples."I actually wonder if the author himself actually got anyof the samples to work..... 4-0 out of 5 stars Highly useable
Anyone involved with exploring the world of Step7 would do well with this book.
I have been involved with PLC technology since 1979 and even today there are too few available reference manuals.
Franky I am disappointed with the Step 7 products particularly the software. I find it primitive in many ways and much more difficult to use than it needs to be.
Programmers should spend their time solving automation problems not struggling with the intracacies and peculiarities of the platform.
If you program with Step 7 or plan to, this book will save you a lot of headaches since little in Step 7 is as intuitive as Allen Bradley or Modicon. ... Read more
