Product Description
In microelectronics technology scaling is performed in order to improve the performance and cost of embedded systems. Scaling to the minimum featuresizes below 100 nm, however, causes a host of problems. One of the most important problems is process variability which is a variation of device parameters after fabrication. Since process variability increases by downscaling the silicon integration technology minimum geometry transistors are heavily affected. Therefore the focus of this book are small on-chip memories in the lowest layer of a memory hierarchy. Process variability severely impacts the performance and the energy consumption of memory organizations. RTL simulations suggest that process variability slows down the memories and makes them consume more energy in most cases. This degrades theparametric- or system-yield after fabrication. To improve on the current standard corner-point design techniques, which produce huge overheads in energy and delay, IMEC introduces configurable memories. This book introduces a controller which is able to put such memories in a state were all requirements are met by minimum energy consumption. ... Read more

Product Description
This introductory treatment of microprocessors provides readers with an accessible and thorough overview of both hardware and software engineering. Designed to be used with a companion volume, Software and Hardware Engineering: The Motorola M68HC11 by those individuals using this popular microcontroller, its general nature also makes it useful for the study of any processor. It can be used in conjunction with any other supplemental material, including a manufacturer's reference manual. Beginning with an explanation of the mystery of a stored program computer, it goes on to explore the resources of the processor used in the laboratory. After leading the reader through examples using various instructions, more difficult programming assignments are given, demonstrating the need for debugging tools. A key chapter is dedicated to software design. Top down design is presented, and pseudo-code is promoted. A World Wide Web site provides an errata and other additional information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am half way through a semester teaching with this book and I could not be happier.
It presents topics in a very well thought out way. It does not emphasize one particular processor
which is a good idea. It teaches PRINCIPLES, not specifics.

When I look at the organization, I can tell that the author is a good teacher. He is a master of presenting
material in a logical, well thought out way.

The specifics of a particular processor can be found in a data sheet. In fact, other books
I have used are little more than expanded versions of processor data sheets.... oh but one major
difference... they cost a lot of money.

I like the idea of teaching students the principles first then bringing in current (and accurate)
material which gives an example of the principle. Using this book, for example, I can talk about
registers in general, then give examples in the PIC18, PIC32, MIPS, 6800 Etc processors,
and compare.

I prefer to teach from principles versus a particular processor. Why? Because
(A) In the workplace the student is not likely to use the processor *I* select.
If the student does not understand the basic principles he/she will have to start from scratch.
(B) processor technology changes quickly. Any particular processor will be dated within a few years.

The bottom line: great book about principles BUT, you will need to augment the material with specifics
about the processor you may be using.

One suggestion for the publisher: It would be great to lower the price of the book a bit given that it is a soft cover...

3-0 out of 5 stars fairly nice but basic
Well ,When I bough this book I was looking for a definitive guide on interfaces & programming them.Particularly for teaching ends. This is not it! It is however a very nice introduction to both areas whereas the software & design part is to little, in my opinion.Considering interfacing ,a few (fairly good)examples are given but they are few.All in all I consider it a little to shallow for EE majors .It is however easily readable and not complex , it could serve in a more obscure course of some sort. ... Product Description
Programmable Controllers has been used both as a textbook for programmable controller training courses and for self-study by thousands of professionals. This applications-based book provides a clear and concise presentation of the fundamental principles of programmable controllers for process and machine control. The author discusses all phases of programmable controller applications from design and programming to installation, maintenance, and start-up. This new 3rd edition covers each of the five standard PLC programming languages: Ladder Diagrams, Function Block Diagrams, Sequential Function Chart, Statement List and Structured Text. Other enhancements to the 3rd edition include additional programming applications and examples to clearly explain each programming language.

The text provides a complete and comprehensive presentation on the design, programming, documentation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and start-up of several important control applications. The material also includes chapters on numbering systems and binary codes, digital and ladder logic, electrical and electronic principles, input and output systems, memory and storage devices, programming languages, and data communication systems. The final chapter covers the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of programmable controller in detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to PLC
This is an excellent book for learning about PLC's. It starts with basics and ends with PLC control system design of Dehydration columns. In chapter 2 Binary logic fundamentals are introduced which lay the foundation for understanding PLC's. This chapter is clearly written and easy to read, which makes understanding following chapters very easy. Basic Electrical and Electronic fundamentals are clearly explained in chapter 3. In chapter 4 Input/Outputs systems are very nicely explained. The best part of the book is the way to explains memory, addressing and ladder logic. SFC's are very briefly explained in this book. This book justifies theory with nice practical examples. Most of the examples are based on AB PLC or Siemens PLC's.This book explains all practical aspects of PLC's very nicely. I strongly recommend this book for beginners and Instructors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of most aspects of PLCs
This book is a good textbook for beginners and a good review/reference for more experienced PLC users. Its explanation of the new IEC 61131-3 programming languages is helpful, since many of us in the US have never dealt with anything other than Ladder Logic. For examples that require reference to a particular PLC, the book most often refers to Allen Bradly PLC5 and Siemens Simatic S7 series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best µC book I have ever had.
This is a great µC book that teaches with the PIC18 series. All examples in the book cover ASM and C18 code. I wish such a book were available for other µCs. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to get started with PICs, especially if your using a PIC18.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very thorough overview of the PIC microcontroller
Having a background in software development (C/C++), having written a lot of assembly language in the distant past, and being familiar with processor architecture, I found the book to be straightforward and useful to me. I was able to make rapid progress through the text, sometimes skipping ahead to sections to find just what I needed. Plenty of useful source code in both asm and C as well. The professor who wrote this put together what seems like a very clean, easy to understand text (where "easy" may depend on your background - I found it easy). It is true that you can probably find much of the information in the processor specification PDF file available from Microchip or in other online sources, yet I found it very convenient to have it all available in one organized textbook. I do recommend the book for others wishing to learn more about the PIC18.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best PIC18 book available.
I have virtually all of the major PIC books available and this
one is, by far, the best PIC18 book on the market. That may be
because it is written as a textbook by an obviously experienced
academic as well a microprocessor engineer. Each chapter follows
a natural progression from the basics of instruction set, tool
use such as MPLAB, assembly, C programming, and
on to the details of the PIC18 architecture.
Its clear organization makes it equally useful as a reference
and may be dipped into for solutions to many PIC issues such as
I2C, timer and A/D use and interfacing details for many applications.
For the earlier PIC16, the best reference is "The Quintessential PIC Microcontroller"
by Sid Katzen for many of the same reasons.
Buy these two books and you have both the PIC16 and PIC18 covered.

1-0 out of 5 stars it's not an introduction in fact it's advanced Software & Hardware Interfacing
the name of this book is not matching with it's contents unfortunatley i found it very complecated and confusing and very hard to understand,it seems to me the only way to understand it is to read some other books related to the PIC microcontroller

the name of this book is missleading ... Read more
