5-0 out of 5 stars to many cookies to try
lots of great cookie recipes. one i have been looking for is sugar cookies and this has the best one i have tried so far.

2-0 out of 5 stars unexpected
This book is just a sample of the original's cookie recipes. It has different recipes instead of the classic versions. Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Joy - What Else?
I spent half a day just reading through this one - you will be digging out mixing bowls, flour, sugar, butter, baking sheets, and cooling racks after about 15 minutes into this book. Well, what else can you say about the American dynasty of cooks?

The photos are beautiful - if they don't get you, nothing will! ... Read more

Product Description
Christmas and cookies are inseparable. The mere mention of baking cookies conjures up memories not just of tantalizing aromas and great tastes but of warm kitchens and good times with family and friends. Joy of Cooking Christmas Cookies brings together in a single volume 75 indispensable cookie recipes and more than 25 recipes for holiday extras. That's more than 100 recipes, half of which are brand new. This book also offers a sneak preview of the revision of Joy of Cooking, the first in more than two decades.

Written with clarity, humor, and a dedication to detail that has always set the Joy of Cooking apart from all other cookbooks, this book will teach anyone from the person who has never baked a single cookie to the experienced home baker how to turn out a perfect cookie every time. A treasure trove of information, this book contains basic instructions on measuring ingredients, handling and shaping cookie doughs, and decorating cookies, supported by helpful line drawings every step of the way. Recipes include the full range of cookies from the simplest one-pan bar cookies like Chocolate-Glazed Toffee Bars and Scottish Shortbread to those that are dropped onto a cookie sheet (don't miss the new Monster Cookies) to Christmas production numbers like Spritz that are piped through a press. On the familiar side are recipes for chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and sugar cookies. Brief but precise directions ensure that the brownies will be fudgey and moist, the chocolate chips chewy, and the sugar cookies meltingly tender. On the novel side are such irresistible new entries as Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars, Tuscan Almond Biscotti, and Chocolate Mint Surprises.

Among this Book's unique features:

  • A full-color photograph of every cookie
  • Brand-new recipes for reduced-fat cookies that taste wonderful
  • An easy-to-make gingerbread house
  • Storage suggestions that help you plan your baking time when conipany is coming
  • Recipes for eggnog, mulled cider and wine, and three kinds of homemade hot chocolate
  • A section on extras-a California fruitcake for the 90s made with dried fruits and nuts, a plum pudding Charles Dickens would have loved, Stollen, Chocolate Truffles, Bourbon Balls, Candied Popcorn, and more.
For sparkling additions to any weekday or for a splendid display of special party presentations, the new Joy of Cooking Christmas Cookies is the only cookie book you'll ever need.Amazon.com Review

5-0 out of 5 stars 75 delectable cookie recipes
I bake a lot, and I read cookbooks all the time, looking for good recipes.I went to the library to copy down a few Christmas cookie recipes, but the recipes and photos in this book looked so great I realized I had to buy it.I have NEVER before found a cookbook where I want to try every recipe in the book, but every recipe in this book scans great (usually my thought pattern is:that sounds good... wait, how much vegetable oil does this recipe call for?eewwww...)If you are looking for Christmas cookie recipes, this is the book I'd get.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you will need
I have used this book time and time again, and not only for Christmas. The recipes are accurate, easy and great. The color photos really show how the recipes should look and they will!I have made more that a dozen different types of cookies from this book and each one was good if not great. The only problem I have with this book is that the ingredients are written into the directions. This makes it a little more time consuming when you are trying to get your recipes ready before the actual assemble and baking process.A minor set back for a really great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday cookies that look great and taste good!
I've used this cookie book when making holiday cookies for family and friends for the last several years, and the results have always been a huge hit.Too often Christmas cookies look great but taste terrible - not something to worry about with this book.I particularly recommend the Cranberry-Cherry Pinwheels. They are delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. However, be forwarned that most of the recipes in this book are also found in the new Joy of Cooking.Joy is great and much more comprehensive.I'd recommend taking a look at it before buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for holiday baking!
As the designated Christmas cookie baker in my family, I was given this book about three years ago. It's a wonderful resource for new ideas and rediscovering old favorites. I heartily recommend the snickerdoodles and the orange ginger wafers.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, or maybe the best!
This book has super recipes.I've tried most of them, and they all work great. The illustrations and pictures are very helpful. It's also good reading, as the quality of writing is very good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Deserves a Constellation
And I thought the cupcake book was good.My roommates would clap in glee every time I pulled this baby down. They have a carrot cake cookie recipe!!!!And even though the Lazy Samoas are a little time intensive, they're oooh so worth it, especially the coconut flavored chocolate coating.I don't even have words for how wonderful this book is.Another amazing "basic vegan baking chemistry" book that has taken the pain out of experimenting with non-vegan recipes. Not that I bother that much anymore, considering how thorough these gals are.Now I need to go buy a vat of peanut butter so I can make those spectacular Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book of Delicious Recipes
The recipes in this book are fantastic.I've only made a few so far but they've all been excellent, and I can't wait to try more.So far I've made the Cowboy Cookies and Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows.I got this book from the library but will definitely be buying a copy for myself (and my mother, who can't wait to bake more vegan cookies). The cookies don't taste "vegan"...this coming from a non-vegan (I'm just dabbling for now!)They are decadent, delicious, and easy to make.

Before baking anything from this book I read the introductory "Cookie Science" section, and to me, that part of this book is as invaluable as the recipes themselves. As someone who has never baked anything vegan, I wasn't quite sure how it was going to work. The authors break down the ingredients, discuss ingredient substitutions, and explain how everything comes together to make a cookie. There's also a short trouble-shooting section, although I haven't had to refer to that yet, which is a good sign.

So far, I've had great success with this book.I highly recommend it to any vegans out there looking for tasty cookie recipes, or non-vegans who want to try something new.You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a Cookie Convert!
I've always been more of a "food" person than a "dessert" person. But other people like sweets. And they'll think you're an alien bodysnatcher if you don't like sweets. So, to fit in at family meals, office parties, and holiday get-togethers, I'm learning to care about cakes, pies, bars, and--yes--cookies.

I trust Isa & Terry from my experience with theppk.com and their cookbook Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook. And in the realm of cookies, they've helped me to not only overcome my avoidance of cookies, but freakin' love cookies.

The recipes in this book are creative, yet simple, easy to follow, and delicious. My non-vegan family members often request that I make cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. My dad's favorite are the Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows.

One thing I love about this cookbook (and the same is true of Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook) is that you can pick it up anytime and make something immediately: I never have to go get special ingredients or set aside hours of my day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need for baking Vegan Cookies
I just got this book last week for and have already made several cookies from the book. I love how there is all kinds of cookies, not just the same old ones like Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, and so on. My favorite cookie so far has to be Minonos on page 150. They are like Milano's but are so much better. This book is just all around great and so far everything that I have baked has come out tasting perfect. I have other Vegan Cookbooks and the cookies in the other books are just too sweet but these recipes have the right amount. You can tell that the authors put alot of time and effort in all aspects with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy for These Cookies
This cookie recipe collection is phenomenal. As a vegetarian, who does not eat eggs and is interested in sugar alternatives, this book provides the perfect cookie playing field. The recipes are easy to follow, and the cookies look and taste delicious every time. I am addicted to the Rocky Roads (the cookie on the front cover). The cookies have been a real hit with family and friends; I can't wait to try out every recipe in the book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for your cookbook collection.
I originally found this cookbook at the library and, after looking through it at home, decided I had to have it.Using Amazon, I found just what I wanted--at the best price. As always, Amazon delivered exactly as promised! In fact, the book arrived within ten days of placing the order. As indicated by the title, the book contains authentic Swedish recipes, collected over many years and revised and expanded through four editions, being translated into English for the first time with this edition. If you like Swedish goodies, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook ever
This is the best cookbook I've ever used, not a single recipe has failed me, and the result is always a yummy treat, often with not much sugar used. The currant cookies yield about 40 cookies, and only 1/4 c. sugar is called for, they are delicious and not too fattening. This is the next best thing to actually traveling back to Sweden. Now, if only they would get going and publish a book on soups, I'd be set for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, and gorgeous, results!
This is a thoroughly modern baking cookbook that easily and systematically takes you through the steps of completing the most delicious and gorgeous baked goods. This book has been around for decades but has been frequently updated to ensure that it meets the needs of today's bakers. I have several versions and love each of them.

Product Description
For this trailblazing collection of America"s favorite cookies, Nancy Baggett crisscrossed the nation, visiting small-town bakeries, chic urban cookie boutiques, rural inns, bed-and-breakfasts, farmers" markets, and the homes of locally renowned cooks. She combed through community cookbooks and searched out long-lost heirloom recipes, sure-handedly reworking every recipe in her own kitchen.
THE ALL-AMERICAN COOKIE BOOK celebrates regional gems from every corner of the country: Pennsylvania Dutch Soft Sugar Cookies, New York Black and Whites, New Mexican Biscochitos, Key Lime Frosties from Florida, and Mocha Espresso Wafers from Seattle. A sophisticated hazelnut chocolate sandwich cookie that was the closely guarded secret of an Oregon hostess is here, and so is a delightfully crisp (and easy to roll out) old-fashioned gingerbread cookie recreated from a handwritten 1880 notebook.
Homespun classics abound: Chocolate Whoopie Pies, Caramel Apple Crumb Bars, Chocolate Chunk Brownies, and Caramel-Frosted Brown Sugar Drops. The collection also features devastatingly delicious contemporary creations like Chewy Chocolate Chunk Monster Cookies and Cranberry-Cherry Icebox Ribbons. For children and adults alike, one of the most exciting chapters will be the lavishly illustrated "Cookie Decorating and Crafts," which includes everything from simple projects like Christmas cookies and Chocolate Gingerbread Bears to an elaborate gingerbread house. As Nancy Baggett tells the story of America"s heritage, she slips in fascinating bits of history, showing the evolution of our homegrown baking traditions.Amazon.com Review
Nancy Baggett went on a culinary journey in search of the best American cookies. Amazed by the remarkable repertoire of American bakers, Baggett spent several years researching and baked nearly 30,000 cookies for The All-American Cookie Book. Every American cookie you can think of is here--more than 150 of them--from luscious Black Bottom Mini Brownie Cups and chewy Chocolate Thumbprint Crackles to Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies and crisp, spicy Old-Fashioned Gingerbread Cookies. More-unusual regional favorites include Savannah Chocolate Chewies, Chocolate Whoopie Pies from Pennsylvania, and Floridian Ambrosia Cookies made with coconut and pineapple. Avid bakers will appreciate the bits of cookie lore and history in this brilliant collection. Baggett also gives interesting insight into how American cookies evolved, and how different ingredients and techniques were introduced. Mouthwatering photographs tempt and delectable descriptions convince you to try nutty, fruity, chocolaty concoctions, every one of them made in America. --Leora Y. Bloom ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must have!
All the favorites and so many more, everything is easily understood and most have photos. This is a great book, buy one for all your girls!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good things
I got this book for Christmas last year, and the photographs are beautiful and the book has wonderful little tips and tricks in the beginning and detailed substitution tables and other informationals in the back of the book.I love the international cookies section!

I made around 20 of these recipes since last year and over the holidays this year, and I have the following to say: most of the recipes needed an additional 1/2 cup to full cup of flour for the dough to stand up and bake as it was supposed to.I also think there are too many variations on shortbread, without a terrific thumbprints recipe. Also, I question the recipe writer/chef's reluctance to prescribe baking powder instead of the parts soda and cream of tartar she often uses.

But the recipes that have been good have ROCKED.I especially like the slices section for its ingenuity and flavors.Sandwich cookies are my new favorite thing to make!

I like this book, but I'm not sure it's the huge cookies book I would have chosen for myself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, not so great cookies
I bought this book for a gift for a family member and decided to try out a few of the recipes myself.I tried the giant triple chocolate recipe and was skeptical when there was absolutely no liquid in the recipe.Turns out I was right, the cookies came out terrible!I also tried the snickerdoodles, and they came out good but I feel like I can make better ones by tweaking our family's recipe for sugar cookies by adding walnuts. The pictures look amazing, but sadly my cookies did not live up to expectations. My advice: avoid the book and stick to your proven family favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Compendium of Cookies
This book has all sorts of cookie recipies and even candies, bars, and cupcakes! It's my ultimate dessert bible. The recipies are easy to understand, and there is a guide at the front for those who need to brush up on their kitchen lingo. One of my favorite recipies in the book is for "Chocolate Dream" cookies. They're delicious, and, believe me, you'll get quite a caffeine-boost out of them. They've saved me on long study-nights! A must-buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and recipes.
I enjoyed reading this book, not just reviewing and using the recipes. It has a lot of "cookie information" that even a seasoned cook can put to good use.For example, I did not know that storing soft cookies with firm ones is not the thing to do.Just an overall good book for new or experienced bakers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy
Excellent variety of different flavors and types of cookies.Good illustrations so you can spot the cookies that most appeal to your taste.Easy instructions with most ingredients that are easily accessible. Comments from people that ate them were, "you should open your own bakery and sell the cookies".Cookies kept well on the countertop or in the freezer. Would recommend this book to anyone that likes to bake cookies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas of cookies and many good recipes
You will find many ideas of cookies, such as marshmallow clouds, pineapple, cocomia cookies and many others that are really impressing but many recipes are not so good you will have to try them and make you own variations to adjust them to your taste.

There are many that not require adjustments, and that are really good by themself but the are many that do require some adjustments.

If you love cookies, you will love this book, it will give you ideas, and many ways of cookies that you couldn't imagine before of seeing this book, but the recipes are not extremely good you have to know that, although I found here the best Carrot cake ever, and I have many cookie recipes from here, I found also not too good recipes like I said before.

So I thing that you should buy it I dont regret abou have bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Fields Cookie Book
Mrs. Fields Cookie Book: 100 Recipes from the Kitchen of Mrs. Fields
Have had this book for years. My brother called from WA and wanted to know the recipe for the oatmeal raisin, since I had made it for him before.Gave him the recipe over the phone, then I came to Amazon and found the book.
It was used, but he said it was in new condition when he received it, and has made several of the cookie recipes since. He said all of they ones he tried were terrific.
I am going to get the other Mrs. Fields for myself (maybe for him too.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever and will never get rid of
This is by far the best cookie book ever! I'm soo grateful I found it and was able to order a used copy.I seriously will never get rid of this book.I recommend it to everyone. The cooking time is too long for most of the recipes, just bake at 320 for 14 minutes to get perfect cookies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A small collection of solid cookie recipes, but don't expect the taste known as the Mrs. Fields brand
This is a cookie recipe book I've reached for many times.Although it is a small collection of around 70 recipes, I have not had a batch turn out badly, and it has loads of ideas --especially if you enjoy holiday cookie baking.

Divided into the sections of:
drop cookies
fancy cookies
filled cookies
bar cookies
and special treats, it makes it easy to locate a cookie that suits your mood, especially because there are color photographs of every cookie at the top of every recipe.

Instructions are simple and even include photographs to illustrate certain steps, such as rolling cookies or dipping in chocolate, so that all is clearly understood.

All recipes are printed on glossy paper--easy wiping.

You will find all variations of cookies, such as basic sugar cookies, snowy white chocolate crescents, chocolate sandwich cookies, fruit fille jewels, custard filled cookies, triple layer lemon bars,Caramel filled brownies, and even cakes and pies.

Will you find a chocolate chip cookierecipe? You betcha...but don't expect to replace your trips to the Mrs field's counter.Mrs. Fields noted herself that this is simply a collection of recipes she loves but not those of her store. To get the taste of her cookies, you gotta make flour from grinding oatmeal to a powder which won't be found herein.

But if copycat taste of her brand isn't your goal but, instead, a truly solid collection of recipes I have personally tested for years with flawless results...I think you will find it here.It is my go-to book for cookie batches and truly a "keeper".

Negatives: some recipes are common and for a small collection, that may or may not be appreciated. No nutritional info. But I think that is to be expected in a sugar and butter filled cookbook, chocolate chip cookie recipe is just plain ol' Tollhouse you already know and love rather than the signature Mrs. Fields taste.

Conclusion: the Mrs. Fields name is for marketing, but the collection is one of great cookies, bars, and even some cakes and pies that all produce great results for this cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook
I have had this cookbook for many years.I just bought another one and have kept it in the bubble wrap for the time when my current one totally wears out.The recipes are delicious and most of the ingredients are pretty basic. This is my number one cookbook for Christmas cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cookie Book EVER!
My mom got his book as a present from my cousin when I was very young.I grew up cooking and altering the recipes in this book and I have never been able to find recipes as good as the ones in here!We lost our copy after moving several years ago, and I have been so lost without it!I'm buying another copy right now!I recommend buying this book for yourself and for everyone you know!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
This is the best cookie cookbook I've ever used.Anytime I see one, new or used, I buy it to have on hand to use for gifts. My favorite recipes are Rolled Sugar Cookies, Scandinavian Almond Bars, Tiny Holiday Tarts, Sandies, Fudge Ecstasies, and the Lemon Tea Cookies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Xmas Cookie Book
I am a self-professed Christmas cookie fanatic. I have numerous cookie books, but this one still is my favorite because it has a wide variety of recipes. Most cookie books I see, I'm lucky if I find one or two recipes I like. This one has multiples that have become "standards" for me. I'm still trying new recipes even though I've had it for YEARS. My favorite are the Gingerbread Teddy Bears.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite Cookie Cookbook
I love this book. I've had it for so many years, I can't remember NOT useing it. Whenever I find another copy I get it and give to friends and family. This last one I sent to my sister out of state. She loves it as well. Every Christmas I make cookies from this book. The Scandinavian Almond Bars are to die for and so easy to make. A family favorite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book!
Like all the others who have posted here, my copy is worn and soiled by years of use.I am known for my spritz cookies most of all, but the triple layer brownies are to die for! There are recipes for wholesome cookies (try the Zucchini Bars!), as well as recipes for drop cookies, bar cookies, hand-molded cookies, icebox cookies, holiday cookies and cookies that require special equipment. For less than $6, this book is an incredible bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST!
I've owned this book for over 10 years now and it's still the only book I turn to for many of the different cookies I make.I've used it so much that it's falling apart.

Seriously, I have yet to make a bad cookie out of this book (I've probably made half the recipes by now). It's well-illustrated and informative too.

I'm usually far more likely to cook 'on the fly' and not actually use a recipe when I make supper, but for baking I trust this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumdidllyumpshious!
All the cookies in this book have made me the bake sale queen!Children have nightmares when they think of a party without my cookies. The Scotish Shortbread recipe has been referred to as "elvin bread."

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy!
This cookbook has made "my" Snickerdoodles (page 37) famous. From nephews and nieces to friends to my own kids, they just can't get enough. You will find the best recipe for Peanut Butter cookies here as well on page 32.Every recipe I have tried is excellent.I am now buying another book as my copy is thrashed from over-use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homestyle recipes-Loved the book
This book was wonderful. Not only were the recipes easy to follow, they had everything from homestyle varieties to "fancy" recipes, while keeping them as simplistic as possible. A very good bonus for a beginning cook, or for an expert just looking for variety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars kitchen klutz can cook
I'm a kitchen klutz. My family refers to my cooking as my "experiments". I've tried dozens of recipe books to improve myway around the kitchen, but they were too complicated and too intimidatingfor someone at my cooking level. I needed something more basic. So Isearched through the children's cookbooks and discovered "Cakes andCookies for Beginners". This book is an absolute marvel. It has about20 mouthwatering dessert recipes, each with a photo of how the finishedproduct is supposed to look. It also includes easy to understand bakingtips. 2-0 out of 5 stars disapointed
I was really disapointed by the recipes... the pictures are great (only half the recipes have a picture tough), the layout too, but the recipes are bland... I specially resent the constant use of fondant to cover the cookies...

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty but it doesn't fly
This is a very attractive cookbook. The illustrations are gorgeous, the cookies LOOK great in the photos. The problem comes in making the recipes. The first I chose (Rocky Road cookies) described the cookies as having wonderful coconut flavor.Reading the ingredients list I doubted very much that there was ANY coconut flavor and that was okay, I was baking for an event and many folks do not love coconut.I made them, they were excellent and gorgeous. And did NOT taste at ALL of coconut.Typo maybe.

I decided to try another recipe. This time I picked Smilies.I wanted to bake with my 3 year old daughter and this seemed the perfect recipe.Again, the ingredients list is a clue. There is nothing to bind the dough together enough to cut shapes and nothing but sugar and butter to flavor the "vanilla" portion of the dough.Since I had a child who wanted to cut out cookies I decided to add a beaten egg to the dough and it worked just fine, but they taste very bland. Not sure I am going to try another round with this book - the results are just too mixed to be worth it.

I too collect cookbooks and own many, nearly all baking. This is one that I would not recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY GREAT
Unique cookie recipes along with some cute creative shape ideas -one of my favorite and best cookie cookbooks - and I have over 400 cookbooks - two thirds of them baking related.Bellefontaine's What's Cooking Chocolate is fabulous as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND to any cookie baker! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookie Book!
This book is very complete. The recipes are well organized and the book is put together to be cook-friendly.The spiral binding makes it very easy to see and use the book.Dede Wilson's recipes are an excellent addition to any baker's collection. The recipes are especially great for the Christmas season, but can certainly be used year-round.I really enjoy using this cook book.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Cookie Book
The majority of the recipes included in the book are not only for holidays, so the cookbook has year-round usefulness. There are 75 cookie recipes and 1 dog biscuit recipe. The basics are here - sugar cookie recipes, thumbprint cookies, spritz, gingerbread, etc., but there is also a terrific assortment of slightly more exotic cookies. My favorites are Fig Cookies (Italian Cucidati), Cherry Orange Florentines and Sicilian White Cookies.

Spiral bound cookbooks are a pleasure to use because no matter where the book is opened, the book lays flat. The book is constructed of heavy paper and spills wipe up easily. The vast majority of the book is printed in black ink, which is very helpful when trying to read a book that is laying open on the countertop from a standing position.

Within each cookie recipe, along with a photograph, are hints, ingredient substitutions and the life span for the cookie is noted. Symbols indicate whether the dough will freeze well, will keep well, whether they are fun to make with kids, are quick to prepare and sturdy enough to mail.

This book was originally published in 2003. The fact that it is still in print is a good measure of the quality of the work. The recipes are perfect for all skill levels and it is attractive enough to make a nice holiday gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, great recipes!!!!
Well Mom is really happy with the book, she really loved it,the pictures are really clear, the recipes are original. There are recipes from all around the world and tomorrow we will start eating these delicious cookies!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I bought a copy of this book for my sister in law with whom I live. We've tried a few of the recipes, and have found them uniformly decent. The "Field Guide" part is a little gimmicky, but still amusing, and it's worth reading through for entertainment value alone if you're into baking. It has useful tips and interesting facts dispersed throughout, as well as origin information on all the cookies. What really makes this book stand out is its binding: the spiral binding should be standard for all cookbooks.

This rating approved by Samantha Biddlecom, cookbook owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great variety without "too much weird"
One of the issues I find with holiday focused cookbooks is that they want to fill them with exotic strange things that look weird, have difficult methods for creation, or won't likely appeal to a large audience but "look great for a book picture!" .This is NOT that book. This book has a great variety of cookies but stays on track enough to be useful. Great book! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
For this stunning collection, the editors of Gourmet delved deep into their archives and selected the most delicious cookie for each year of the magazine's sixty-eight-year existence. After marathon testing sessions and winnowing from thousands of recipes—many sent in by readers—they chose an amazing array, from the almond-scented French-style Cajun Macaroons, from the magazine’s beginnings in 1941, through Mocha Toffee Bars (1971), to the contemporary Glittering Lemon Sandwich Cookies. The enticing assortment includes:

Cookies of every type and description, from the homey (Aunt Sis’s Strawberry Tart Cookies) to the exotic (Grand Marnier-Glazed Pain d’Epice Cookies), including balls, bars, refrigerator cookies, drop cookies, even deep-fried cookie confections.

Cookies from around the world, from Dutch Jan Hagels to Irish oatmeal sandwich cookies filled with cream and Irish whiskey, to Scandinavian Rosettes.

Dozens of Christmas cookies: Old-Fashioned Christmas Butter Cookies, star-shaped Moravian White Cookies, Chocolate Peppermint Bar Cookies.

Printed exactly as they originally appeared in the magazine, with abundant tips and recipe notes from Gourmet’s test kitchen, and with headnotes describing their cultural context, the recipes present a fascinating bite-by-bite history of how our appetites evolved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but more variety would have been nice.
Looking for a new cookie cookbook? This was is pretty amazing. Part of what makes this book amazing is the illustrations. They are pretty wonderful looking but they don't always say "eat me!" Instead, I feel like they are works of art that should be on my kitchen walls.Which tends to be a trend with Gourmet. I remember enjoying just looking through the amazing pictures of food when I was a kid and my dad got the Gourmet magazine (and cookbooks). Everything looks artistic or yummy and often both.

While some of the recipes look awesome and are for things I haven't seen, most of them are for known cookie types. There are just variations on known cookies or desserts (like a couple of different brownie recipes). There was a cranberry pistachio biscotti recipe that I've seen something similar before (I'm not a biscotti fan so I haven't made it).

The book is set up as a popular cookies since the 1940s. I didn't mind the organization at all (my other cookie recipe book is set up by ingredients) and found the little blurbs on the recipes interesting. I didn't care for how many butter (or butter-like) cookies with jam were given. I think the last three decades had three recipes out of 15.

There were some very interesting recipes. I liked the look of the Irish Coffee Crunchies (which I won't be making because they call for heavy cream and I while I could make it work somehow I haven't found a great heavy cream alternative and being both soy and lactose intolerant will make those a no go for me).I plan on trying out the Skibo Castle Ginger Crunch bars and the Mocha Toffee Bars as those both looked yummy. I don't know when I'll get to making the ginger cookies since they call for golden syrup and I'm not quite sure what that is (there is a listing on where to find it though in the back of the book).

If you are looking for a cookie book to get started, this one could be a nice choice. The images are beautiful and some of the cookie recipes are pretty basic while others will stretch you into learning new cookie types. I enjoyed reading through the recipes and will have to try one or two when I have more time for baking.

The Gourmet Cookie Book gets 4 Stars for a beautiful presentation but docked down from 5 because I thought I having multiple recipes for the same type of cookie was a bit of a let down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cookie Monsters Rejoice
I received this book way before I expected because the web site indicated it wouldn't be ready until November.I love it.It is a whole book full of Gourmet's December issue which was the one where they published the year's cookie recipes so you could make them for the holidays.I'm glad to see some of Gourmet's legacy has not been lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Beautiful photos, yummy looking cookies!Eye candy book!I hope the recipes taste good!

5-0 out of 5 stars A history, with recipes and photos, of the cookie at Gourmet Magazine
As a longtime subscriber to both Gourmet and Bon Appetit, I used to tell people that I liked Gourmet for its savory recipes and Bon Appetit for its sweets. This new compilation of the best cookie recipes, decade by decade, from Gourmet confronted me with the fallacy of that statement. Some of my long-time favorite cookie recipes, including strawberry tart cookies and cranberry pistachio biscotti, can be found here. The best part of this book, however, is not the recipes, as good as they are, but the history behind them. The division of the recipes by decades offers glimpses into trends, subscribers, changing culinary tastes and abilities, and, of course, the focus of the magazine itself.

Interestingly, when the magazine was first published in 1940s and people baked more than they do today, the cookie recipes were much more simple, with tastes that highlighted a few ingredients:butter, nuts, spices.Even in the 1950s, when baking ingredients were more available, the cookies remained somewhat homey and classic, with gingerbread men, lace cookies, and sesame-seed-coated queen's biscuits taking center stage. In the 1960s, however, Gourmet's cookies started taking on a more international note; as the editors note, commercialized air travel and growing national unrest led to more daring recipes. As the book states, "not a single one of the four cookie recipes that appeared in Gourmet in 1963 was of American origin."With this new internationalism came other recipes with more sophisticated lists of ingredients and flavors.By jumping ahead to the 2000s, Gourmet's final decade, one can see how much American tastes have changed:many of the cookies are classics with gourmet twists that make them look more like professionally baked treats than homemade lunch box snacks.Because the book contains a full page photograph of each recipe, it is obvious that later recipes focused as much on aesthetics as taste, while most earlier ones were content with a plain appearance.

Because this book contains recipes exactly as they appeared in the magazine (with some recipe notes for clarification), contemporary bakers may be somewhat taken aback by the format in the earlier decades, as their directions are "remarkably casual, a kind of mysterious shorthand that assumes that each reader is an accomplished cook."While I dispute that these early recipes require any sort of advanced experience, they are definitely written out as though one person is describing the process to another, with ingredients not listed separately but as part of the instructions.(Separate lists of ingredients don't appear until 1982, when recipes were "no longer able to count on the readers' experience.")In some ways, I found the earlier recipes easier to follow because I didn't have to worry about going back and forth between adding sugar and reading how much sugar was called for.The amount was right there in the text.

But how are the recipes themselves?Absolutely wonderful. Not a single one of the recipes I tried missed, although, obviously, some recipes, such as the sparkling lemon sandwich cookies, took more time and effort. From the humble honey refrigerator cookies to the sophisticated coconut macadamia shortbread, these recipes will please contemporary palates.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hit with my 18mo Boy
My son loves this book. It is pretty simple in text. The pictures are vivid and on a white background. I read this several times a day as my son requests it daily. He especially likes the part when Mouse thinks baking is "EASY" and repeats Easy over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable Book
We love this one! Such a cute story, the pictures are wonderful, full of color and lots of things to look at. It is sort of like Goodnight Moon in the respect that you spend quite some time looking at the pictures on each page and pointing to all of the different things you see. I would highly recommend this one. The only bad thing about it is everytime we read it I want to bake cookies :)

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect book for little children
This was bought as a gift, but young children really love these books. They are not too long and have really great themes throught the books that draws kids attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems Like A Good Series
Tonight my four year old, Grace, asked me to read this book to her. The illustrations are cute, but there is a lot of white space. This does not bother Grace though. After reading Numeroff's book to her, she said, "I like that book a lot." My seven year old was on her bunk reading another book while I was reading The Best Mouse Cookie, but she managed to chuckle as I read this story to her younger sister. The story has a great ending - but the best cookie is the one you share with a friend. Just ask Mouse. My daughter Grace now wants to make a lot of cookies just like Mouse did.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookie book you will ever own!
I owned this book for years and lost it in Katrina.I had to get another one. This book is, by far, the best cookie book I've ever owned.I can't even name the best recipe in the book, but if I had to choose a few to never do without, I would go with the Pecan Pie Bars, Ugly Duckling Brownies, and the Walnut Coffee Dunkers.Any one of those three is worth the price of the book alone, but all three, coupled with many, many others, make this book priceless.
This has to be the easiest book to use.A pot, a spoon, a pan and a couple of measuring cups is really all you will need. You can have a batch of the most delicious brownies, warm from the oven, in about 35 minutes. The dunking cookies, a.k.a. BISCOTTI!!!, are done, start to finish, in less than an hour with the majority of that just cooking time and not actual work.If you've never had real, homemade biscotti, you have no idea what you are missing.None of that hard, brittle, flavorless cracker tasting stuff; this is crisp, with a slight yielding texture, and so full of nuts and flavor that you will never want the packaged stuff again.

As an aside, over the years of making these brownies (which, btw, always come out perfect) I have found that using foil makes them even easier.I form the foil to the outside of the pan and then put it inside, contoured perfectly to fit.Release foil is great, but a little Baker's Joy does the trick, too.You let the brownies cool for a few then lift the whole batch, foil and all, out of the pan. Then you can cut them without ruining the edge ones trying to get them out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book - Worth Every Penny
I've tried a BUNCH of recipes from this book and they have all been delicious and several have made the roster on my annual Christmas cookie baking marathon (eggnog cookies, chocolate mint cookies, pecan pie bars, triple lemon bars, brown sugar shortbread cookies, white chocolate macadamia cookies, mini chocolate chip macaroons are just a few of the many I have tried). It's not just cookies - there are desserts too - and many are downright decadent. There's a picture for every recipe and thus far my results have looked exactly like the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this cookie book!
I love this cookie book. It has my very favorite cookie recipe on page 15, Malted Milk Cookies. Mmmmm. Whenever I am invited to a wedding, if the couple is registered for baking items, like cookie sheets, this is what I get them along with a copy of this book and a reference to page 15.

The other reason I love this book is because starting when my son was around four years old, we'd sit on the couch with it and pick out cookies that we wanted to bake based on the photographs. Of course, the downside is that kids love repetition and it was almost always the Blue Ribbon Chocolate Chip Cookies (he never picked the malted milk ones).

As mentioned in another review, the recipes are each on one page so you don't have to worry about turning the page which can be quite annoying, particularly when you have your cook book in a plexi-glass holder, and the type is big so with this book, I don't have to search for my reading glasses to find out the next step in the recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookie recipes ever
I love this cookie book it has been a life saver for me.I have been baking for years and I find myself reaching for this book the most. You at times may have to add more flour or more of something but like ever good baker knows the weather play's a part in that and other things.I have baked for so many different people and everyone thinks I brought these for a store. A most have.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst ever cookie book
This may be the worst cookbook I have ever used.I received it as a gift and tried several of the recipes.Every single one was a flop. And I am not a beginning chef!Don't bother with it.I wasted a lot of money in ingredients for things that ended up in the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful, awful cookbook
I have been baking and cooking since I was a small child. While I am no pastry chef, I generally can follow a recipe and have made thousands of successful meals in my lifetime.I recieved this book as a wedding gift 5 years ago, and over the years I have TRIED and TRIED to make these recipes to no avail.Baking times have been off (I have had to bake things as long as 45 minutes to 1 hour over what was given), ingredients have been off, things don't turn at at ALL like the picture, and today was the last straw.I have needed to add over 1 cup extra of flour for more than one recipe, in others, the cookies spread across the cookie sheet until they merged into one huge cookie.I have tried dozens of these recipes, and only one has turned out.I warn anyone before buying this cookbook - DON'T.It's just not worth it.I keep telling myself to just throw it away, but always I torture myself into trying one more recipe to let the book redeem itself, but this is it.I'm done. You want Mrs. Field's cookies, go buy them at the mall. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Cookie Baker's Bible
Years ago, I chanced upon this book, perhaps as a library book; I know I did not have it for long, and then I lost track of the author, and the exact title. I was, in a word, bereaved. I searched diligently for the book for years, at every used book sale, every yard sale, and every collection I came across.

Then by sheer serendipity, I found it again. I recalled certain recipes, and the format of the book, and at one particular out-of-the-way bookstore, a friend of mine and I, quite literally, tussled over ownership of it. I won, due to my being more of a cookie baker; and since then it has stood in pride of place during every marathon Christmas-cookie-baking session.

There are recipes in this book I cannot be without during the Christmas season, and whenever I am in the mood to bake I generally dig this book out from the many cookie cookbooks that I own. The recipes for Bullets, Hungarian Kifli (a bit labour intensive, but highly rewarding),Russian Tea Cakes, and Crackle-Top Molasses are always in my repertoire; the recipe here for Peanut Butter Kisses is generally the one I use; and I was ecstatic to find the recipe in here for Congo Bars, a bar cookie that almost everybody brought to every church supper I ever attended growing up in New England. There is also a recipe I utilize every Christmas, called Melting Moments, a lovely, delicate cookie from England, made with corn starch.

There isn't a bad recipe in this book. Mine is tattered, marked with pencil and pen, recipes starred and notated ("Great!") ("So-and-so's favourite!"),marred by old globs of dough that flew off the beaters, grease-marked; but this is one of my most highly prized books, and one that I will make a point to show my niece some day, to keep it in the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful cookbook!
I gre up making cookies from recipes in this book.Like another reviewer, my book has long since lost it's binding but the recipes are still fresh. The crinkle top molasses cookie and the lemon bar recipes are unbeatable.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had this book for 22 years! It's the BEST!!!!
I bought this book at a school book fair when I was 7 years old. When I was little my mom and I used to make recipes from this book all the time. Now that my daughter is almost 7, we have started to bake together, using recipes from this book, as well. The binding fell apart many years ago, leavingme with a stack of papers, but the cookies are still amazing! The recipes are clear, simple and don't require exotic ingredients. There are recipes for every type of cookie imaginable and plenty of pictures.I highly, highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST!

I have been using this cookie book for the past 11 years and love every recipe in it.There are many ethnic cookie recipes that relatives have passed down and we either lost or couldn't get in touch with the person who made a certain type of cookie.I found all of them in this book including English Tea Cookies,Linzer Rounds,Danish Butter Cookies,Peanut-Butter and Chocolate Kisses,Vienna Squares,Bon Bons,Russian Tea Cakes, Hungarian Kifli,Pizzelles,Baklava,Lady Fingers, Lebkuchen and Pfeffernusse.I would recommend giving this book to anyone just starting out, a newlywed, a child going out on her own, or a good friend.I have never found any other books that contain so many good cookie recipes for every occasion.Buy, bake and enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars we loved it
I bought this book thinking it was cute and we might make 1 or 2 of the recipes and well I collect cook books...we loved this book. Quick and easy...and really delicious...cookie recipes for any taste or any reason. I have shared several recipes with family members...great to use when cooking with children because the kids just love the recipes and can make something the family will enjoy. I got tired of sharing recipes. I bought more copies of the book. Highly recommended for groups or bake sales or just family gatherings. Fun, easy, fast, great tasting cookies. What more could one ask?

This book is so much fun! I'm working my way through to the back, then I'm
starting over! You make some too!

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend
This book has such yummy and easy recipes. Most of the recipes only have 5 or so ingredients. The ingredients are easily found at the supermarket. I have even made some of the recipes with my 3 year old son as my sous chef. This book was given to me as a gift and now I give it out as a gift to my friends. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars yum!
I just got this cookbook the other day and all the recipes look soooo delicious and simple! The hardest part is choosing which one to try. Today I made the apricot cashew bars for friends who just had a baby (and I made a batch for my family of course!) and got rave reviews! I cant wait to make more! Its also a great cookbook for parents of little kids- because they get to help put on all the fun toppings (if they dont eat them first)! My 4 year old daughter had lots of fun making these and eating them too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody will know the difference!
If you baked your cookies from scratch, or used the recipes in this book using regrigerated dough - nobody will know! You'll know though, because you'll have less mess and more free time.

I used to love baking everything from scratch, and I still do from time to time (seems like twice a year now - Christmas and Easter). But when you become a Mom, although you're intentions were there, baking from scratch is often something there is just not time for anymore. This book gets you bake sale ready cookies that will win you raves as well as raise funds, office coffee room cookies that will be gone within minutes and gourmet cookies that your friends and family will want the recipes for.People will be whispering behind your back that you're the next Mrs. Fields.

Using the refrigerated dough is also less ingredients for the baker on the go - just grab a few rolls and you're halfway there.Stock up on the mix ins, and you're done!

Highly recommend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your Cookbook Collection
Like many others, I stumbled across Robin's website for hosting a cookie exchange several years ago. Over the past few years, I found lots of ideas shared by others that have helped me grow my cookie exchange. Now I have a wait list to attend as I limit to 20 ladies.I received my copy of The Cookie Party Cookbook last week and couldn't put it down. I learnt several tips in just the first few pages. When I got to the cream cheese cookie, I thought AH HA, i've found my cookie for this year but then I read on and I found more and more I wanted/ needed to make.Robin's Cookie Party Cookbook takes you beyond Cookie Exchanges. It's really a staple book that all bakers should have in their collection as the cookies can be made ALL YEAR ROUND!I so love this book, I am ordering more to give as prizes at this years event and I know the ladies will love it! Especially the International Section cause that is the theme for next year's Exchange. Robin congrats to you.. I know this will become a huge seller and a book handed down the generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Cookie Exchange Books
Six years ago I was in search of a way to start a Cookie Exchange. I came upon Robins website, and started a family tradition. A few years later I purchased the workbook and took it up a notch. Now "The Cookie Party Cookbook is a comprehensive, informative, down to earth read. While reading the book several times I had the feeling I was sitting at the kitchen table talking with a girlfriend about a cookie swap. Robins expertise on the subject is evident in her comfortability and ease of delivering information and her down to earth writing.
Not only will the beginner feel confident to hostess a party, the experienced hostess will get step by step guidance and encouragement to be more creative and go bigger. There isn't any subject she didn't cover from save the dates, invites, menus, games and my particular favorite, Common Hosting Concerns. There was a lot of graceful ways to handle the sticky suitations.Keep an eye out for the recipes and cookie key.
I was moved to learn Robins background with baking and with the women who inspired her. This is a positive nuturing book. When your done I know you too will realize Cookie Exchanges are about so much more than just cookies. You will come away with an appreciation for friends, family, and tradition. Most of all an appreciation for Robin for writting this great book and helping you on your way to a much anticipated yearly tradition. Congratulations Robin
