I have owned this book for a long time, and I go back to it again and again. It is wonderful to be able to try so many recipes without then having 100 cookies. It is a perfect book for making a cookie platter--you can make many kinds and fit them on one big plate! The best things about the book are that there are a wide variety of recipes and that all of them are fabulous. Her chocolate chip cookie recipe is the best in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reprint Please!

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Help to Get this book REPRINTED!
I attended a book signing and tasting at"The Festival of the Book" in Charlottesville, Va on Sat. 3/22/03. I mey Delores Kostelni and tasted 5 of her cookies. They were fabulous and I'd love to add this book to my collection. I enjoy baking but don't usually have the time to make 4-5 dozen . Making a dozen would bemore practical and more enjoyable.

Let's try to help to get this book reprinted for this lovely lady!

5-0 out of 5 stars COOKIES BY THE DOZEN IS A GREAT IDEA!
Apparently Cookies by the Dozen is out of print and this is too bad for all of us who want to make homemade cookies but have neither the time nor money to prepare 50 or more from a standard recipe. This concept is a great idea for baby boomers, grandmothers who have their grandchildren over to make cookies for dessert or a snack, for couples, for small families, for everyone who desires the pleasures, flavors, and aromas associated with making homemade cookies and who do not have all day to devote to doing it.This book is so wonderful, the recipes so easy and practical that I would hope Warner Books would get in touch with the author to add more recipes and they would reissue it--and soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone, not just for those who are busy
The clear and concise recipes in this book make baking a wide range of cookies easy and fun. The author's notes about each recipe are interesting and informative. The best part about the book is the concept of making justa few cookies for those of us who don't need three dozen at one time. Theoatmeal raisins are my favorite! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Create Your Own Stampede!
This 50-page, full-color cookbook is a delight for fans of Western baking. Tuda Libby Crews walks you through the process of creating beautiful, authentic, Western-themed cookies step-by-step. From recipes for cookies, icings, and even a pattern for a chili-pepper shaped cookie, Tuda shows you how to make extraordinary cookies in your own kitchen.

I made the Buffalo cookies using Tuda's copper Buffalo cutter. The Chocolate Buffalo Dough used ingredients that I had readily on hand: butter, shortening, flour, chocolate, eggs, vanilla, and sugar. Using Tuda's Tips, I was able to efficiently and easily roll out the dough. No struggling with crumbling dough here! The dough had a beautiful texture and was very easy to handle. However, the dough is very stiff and it mixes best in a large mixer (I used a 6-quart mixer).

The cookies baked best using parchment paper. The parchment paper really made a difference in holding the shape of the cookies. The cookies had a light and almost chewy-texture, depending on how thickly you roll them out. They were not brittle.

After baking, I cooled and iced them just like Tuda, even accenting the Buffalo coats with chocolate sprinkles (or jimmies). The cookies were happily received and applauded. These Chocolate Buffalo cookies are original, unique, and remarkable. You'll enjoy making them as much as eating them!

This cookbook also includes recipes for Cowboy Sugar Cookies, Adobe Frosting, and Sugar Baby Frosting. Tuda thoughtfully includes Tips for Rolling-Out, Cutting-Out, Baking, and Decorating the cookies. The Decorating techniques are clear and easy to follow. Tuda even tells you how to pack these cookies for shipping them long distances!

You will enjoy this cookbook from cover to cover. It makes for lovely afternoons with your family, or even as a baking adventure for cookie lovers. Go ahead, bake a herd of Buffao and start a stampede to your kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great service
I had heard about this book for years, but it is out of print and even the local library's copy had disappeared long ago.I knew the quality of the authors' work from "The Art of the Cake," which I have used to make many a French cake."The French Cookie Book" looks like another thorough compendium of all sorts of French cookie forms and I am looking forward to baking some, especially the macarons. This may be a "used" book, but it's in excellent shape and came promptly a week after I placed the order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy with cookie book
The cookbook was bought as a gift.I flipped through it and found it to be what I wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Keepsake!!
This book is a must have for any and all avid cookie bakers!!I mean, it's like totally awesome.I learned so much. For example, I never knew how to get that really pretty golden color that the German and French cookies have. They teach you cookie baking techniques that I have absolutely never heard of.Many of them however, a bit tedious for what seems to be such a simple cookie. However, if you want to take show stopping, crowd pleasing cookies to any event, you need this book.If you want to "show off" baking skills that you know you don't really have (but you want everyone to think that you do), you need this book. And finally, if you just love the taste of high quality butter cookies, this is the cookie book for you.I'm so glad I found this book!!You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lost World of Cookies
The authors, sadly, seem to be correct: fine cookies are a mostly lost art, even in France. I have read descriptions of and seem pictures of displays of cookies in sweet shops in Paris about a century ago. They contain a bewildering display of massive amounts of cookies in endless varieties. Today, these displays are almost extinct. This book is probably your last chance to learn how to produce these cookies, both for the amateur home cook and the professional. The authors seem to have done quite a bit of research and trial-and-error, as most of the recipes seem to be revivals and recreations as opposed to a recording of how they were actually done in production. As a result, the recipes have much more in common than they would have if they were the actual, original recipes.

The key to all these different types is variation. In this book, there are many dozens of cookies, all very different in look and taste, yet all are based on only 7 basic recipes. With minor alterations in forming and flavors, you get a totally different cookie from the same recipe.Once you can make the basic recipe in a chapter, you can make all of the other cookies in the chapter, which is usually one or two dozen more. The seven types are: creamed sugar and butter, meringue, almond paste, sponge cake, tuiles, pâte sucrée, and puff pastry (yes, the authors expect you to make your own). I should also point out that these are traditional, fancy French patisserie; you will not find chocolate chips, oatmeal raisin cartwheels, or gingerbread men.

The book also has several unusual instructions. Some recipes require a resting period of a few hours or even overnight. Whipping egg whites requires that you go past the stiff peak stage, a no-no in my book.It also calls for baking on a piece of newspaper, and wetting down the paper after baking to get the cookies off. They may seem odd, but each one worked as advertised, and you are well advised to follow the directions to the letter; attempts to skip them and do it the "normal" way will meet with failure. You will also need a substantial collection of unusual and specialty baking pans which are hard to find, if you can find them at all. I also find the instructions for tempering chocolate to be inadequate, and used a standard method for tempering chocolate. In the chapter on pâte sucrée, one is instructed to use the "smear" method of dough, it specifies ammonium carbonate and not baking soda, and it states that if the temperature is above 75, you can not do these recipes (the same author remark applies to the chapter on puff pastry). It also instructs you to wet the baking pan before putting down the dough so it stays glued down. The chapter on puff pastry has a good recipe for using up scraps along with recommended recipes that can use it.It also has a good and reliable recipe for chocolate puff pastry.

There are several nice touches to the recipes. All have a specific list of equipment that you need; however, they only list the baking sheets and preparation, and not other equipment like food processors or blenders. Each recipe also has a specific amount of time that you can store the cookies; some will last a week, while others must be eaten the same day, while frozen, uncooked dough will last longer. The procedure of each recipe is also extremely detailed, and leaves nothing to chance; in this respect, this book is exemplary and would be a good template for anyone contemplating writing a cookbook. Some recipes take up 2 pages. Also worthy of note is that the recipe amounts are listed in weight, as well as volume.

The first part of each chapter also features a rather extensive primer on the techniques featured in the recipes for that chapter. The beginning of each chapter also features a very handy and useful to index to all of the recipes for that chapter. This book is a massive tome of 500 pages, including an impressive 90 pages just on references and detailed procedures. Here, for example, you will find a complete explanation of the brief and inadequate procedures of tempering chocolate in the recipes. The explanation and diagrams for making a cornet is hopelessly wrong. It has a rare explanation on the proper use of the pastry bag.It also calls for Vaseline as a pan coating (I would advise against this; try non-stick cooking spray with lecithin instead).

Best of all, every one of the cookies I tried were wonderful and worth the effort, and most were not harder to make than ordinary cookies from standard cookbooks; in some cases, they were easier since this book had the details missing from most recipes. This is a reliable and extensive resource for traditional, French cookies. In this book, I found several years worth of cookie baking (including several for that neglected cookie gun hidden at the back of the cabinet), and I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars They're all here. And they're not as hard as you think!
I'm not very familiar with "real" French cookies, so I didn't know how hard or easy they'd be.It turns out that they'd probably have been a lot more work without this book. The author gives very clear line drawings exactly when they're most needed, tells you exactly what equipment you need up front, explains how to use the equipment you're probably not all that familiar with, and gives beautifully clear directions.

The only troubles with the book is that some of the recipes are much longer to make than is clear from the first reading (the dough softens quicker than I expected, needs to chill 10 times, etc.), and it's basically impossible to plan in advance how long one of these batches will take to put together. An indicator of this would really have helped a lot.

But they're SO good; it's amazing how much better cookies taste with just a little more time put into them and with a brilliant French chef's advice.

Bon appetit! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cookie for Every Jar
Maria presents us with a solid collection of bakery style cookie recipes. She includes some oldtime favorites that are sure to be recognized, as well as some harder to find international recipes. The recipes are decidedly weighted in the Italian genre, understandably given the author's roots, with a large number of biscotti recipes. The recipes tend to be on the rich side, but she compensates for this with a small collection at the back of low-fat, low-sugar, gluten-free, and more health conscious recipes. She even has a recipe to satisfy Fido! One of the more unusual recipes included is for chocolate chili pepper cookies. Although the collection does not include any photographs and has few illustrations, the recipes are clearly written and success is almost insured without the benefit of visual aids. This volume is definitely worth checking out if you have a soft spot for cookies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!
Like Maria Bruscino Sanchez's other books, this is filled with easy, delicious recipes.I received this for my birthday a week ago and we have already tried several recipes. Each one we have tried was easy, tasted great, and the kids were able to help. They are all "keepers".The Eggnog cookies are particularly good.We have made three batches and plan to make more for Christmas. The Maple cookies are aso excellent, another keeper in our house.I hope Maria Bruscino Sanchez writes another book fast, I can't wait to try anything else she makes. ... Here is a book that no self-respecting cookie-lover can resist. The Good Cookie shares a fresh and tantalizing selection of 250 recipes from around the world--complete with expert instruction on how to make them. From rugged Cranberry Orange Nut Bars and irresistible Bittersweet Chocolate Biscotti to sophisticated Chocolate-Filled Almond Hearts, readers bake their way through basic drop cookies, beautiful hand-formed cookies, delectable sandwich cookies, complex decorator cookies, and more.

Each recipe features background information on the cookie's history, technique, ingredients, and more. Chockful of information on decorating, wrapping, and shipping cookies for gift-giving, as well as tips on freezing for make-ahead planning, the book also includes a comprehensive list of sources for basic equipment, out-of-the-way places for finding cookie stamps, as well as tips on where to locate hard-to-find ingredients and equipment. Amazon.com Review
There are thousands of cookie recipes out there already, and probably hundreds of cookie recipe books. What makes The Good Cookie different, and worth making room for, is Tish Boyle. Food editor of the magazines Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design, Boyle uses her experience as a pastry chef to update, improve, and choose between all those thousands of recipes for classic and best-loved cookies. She also includes recipes contributed by other excellent pastry chefs she's met, and for the remainder she relies on her own creative genius.

With over 250 recipes to choose from, Boyle makes the task much easier with mouth-watering introductions that describe in detail the appearance, texture, and taste of every cookie. The chapters are organized by technique, but the recipes are reorganized in an ingenious index by occasion or use: Ship Well, For Grown-Ups, Over-the-Top Chocolate, Bake Sale Bonanza, and the like. You'll find favorites such as Russian Tea Cakes, Lattice-Topped Linzer Bars, and Hermits, and crowd pleasers like Citrus Sandwiches and Blueberry Crumble Bars. Contributions from others include Chocolate Cranberry Spice Cookies, Ginger Fortune Cookies, and Midnight Brownies (made with Midnight Milky Way bars!). But what makes The Good Cookie priceless are the gems such as the crispy, chewy Tangerine Kumquat Rounds, explosive with citrus flavor, and Boyle's clear, detailed instructions that ensure their success. --Leora Y. Chapter headings ureadable. Table of contents poor and takes you to chapters only. Recipes great once you find them..

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs More Photos
The recipes in this book are good ones. However the absence of photos really takes away from this book. Many people are visual learners and seeing what the end result of what a recipe should look liketends to be very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone
I bought this book a couple of months ago and it's my first cookie only cookbook so I couldn't compare with any others. But for the moment it doesn't look like I'll need another one in a long time.

There are lots of recipes to choose from - not just cookies but also brownies and macaroons, fruit-filled puff pastries, savory breadstick and crisps. I don't mind them being included (in a book called 'The Good Cookie' no less) but I thought I should mention this anyway since I can see how someone might prefer a strictly cookies-only book.

The beginning chapters 'Equipment', 'Ingredients' and 'Techniques, Tips and Troubleshooting' will be useful to those just starting out. These are followed by the recipes and they are sorted by type (ie. drop, rolled, piped). A sentence on their storage (time/temperature) accompanies each recipe, difficulty levels are not stated however, but you do get an idea of what to expect based on the short introductions for each of the sections. Some recipes call for a candy thermometer while others require assembly of different components (eg. bar/sandwich cookies). I don't think one is necessarily more 'advanced' or difficult than the other, just that those do require more time and effort.

There is a small section where the recipes are listed under headings like 'For Grownups', 'Showstoppers' and 'Holidays' (my only gripe is these aren't followed by page numbers). Also included is a 'Basic Recipe' section with items like buttercream, icing and pastry crusts and I'm happy to see the inclusion of a praline paste among them.

As others have mentioned there are several pages of colour photographs showcasing some of the recipe results. There are usually 2 or 3 selections per glossy page, with exceptions: the Wicked Witch Candy Cottage for example deserves to have its own page.

All in all I'm very happy with this book. I considered 'Great Cookies' by Carole Walter at the same time as both appear to be quite similar but picked this one instead based on the more consistent reviews. I do not know what the differences between the two are, but I doubt I'll ever find out. Every recipe I tried turned out great and most importantly tasted great. I do wish however that it came with metric measurements as well but hey, it's just cookies and I haven't had any problems so far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Holiday Cookie Baking Bible
This is a phenomenal cookie book! Everything I've made has been perfect, and gobbled up in seconds. My little girls have made several batches on their own (with adult supervision)--they love it, too. The no-bake cookies are wonderful for children, but really all the recipes are. That said, there are also some still easy but very sophisticated options for adult palates, too--love the fresh raspberry cheesecake bars with a brownie crust--my idea of heaven. And the pumpkin whoopies were HUGE hit at three different Halloween parties.

can say, without question, that this is cookbook you will use over and over again--it's just fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Festive Book to Plan Cookie Exchange Parties & Recipes
This book includes over one hundred cookie, and a few cupcake recipes along with tips to help the user plan and host a holiday cookie exchange party. The recipes cover most of the basic cookies found around the holidays but some also possess a twist or slight alteration or addition - like Eggnog Madeleines. But if already in possession with a good general cookie cookbook, there may be quite a few duplicate recipes.

Additionally, less than a third of the recipes have a photograph, so if a picture of the finished cookie is an important part of the preparation process, this might be an issue. I find that I use pictures of cookies to help me decide which ones to prepare, particularly when they will be on display at a cookie exchange party and looks are important. The lack of photographs could be easily remedied by taking group shots of the cookies so that each is pictured but additional pages of photographs don't increase costs. This is a publisher's decision, not the author.

Divided into Parts, and the first one is Planning and Hosting a Cookie Exchange which has sections on Cookie Exchange "Rules," How to Make Your Cookies Look Their Best, Presentation and Packaging, Party Themes, Party Menus and About the Recipes. Part two covers Cookies to Build a Party Around which includes Dear Santa: Dressed-up Classics, Ginger and Spice, For Chocoholics and Cookie Ornaments. Cookies by Technique is the title of part three with sections on Drop Cookies, Bars and Squares, Rolled and Cut-Out Cookies, Slice and Bake Cookies, Filled Cookies, Molded and Stamped Cookies and finally Pressed and Piped Cookies. Each recipe contains a helpful tip or comment.

A good index is located in the back of the book which aids in locating a specific recipe quickly. There is also a metric conversion table for measurements along with a small list of sources for spices, cookie molds, etc. The paper quality is good and most spills should wipe up easily. And, paperback cookbooks are notorious for not laying open on the countertop, but this one did reasonably well no matter what page it was on. The font size used for the ingredients is a little small - probably nine point -- so make note if that is an issue.

I prepared two of the cookie recipes and they turned out perfectly and were quite delicious. First, Malted Milk Chocolate Cookies were really good but I substituted semi-sweet chocolate for the chopped milk chocolate and the result was excellent. I also prepared the Pistachio and Cranberry Biscotti primarily to see how it compared with my usual version of the recipe. This one fared well and I would be happy to prepare either recipe.

The book accomplishes its purpose and should be helpful to anyone who is new to cookie exchanges or in search of basic cookie recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cookie, my dear?
This is the companion book to Rodgers' "Coffee and Cake", and the title reminds us of William Hickey's infamous question in the film "Prizzi's Honor."

There's an excellent tutorial about teas and the proper preparation method comprising the first half of this book, followed by a nice selection of both high brow and low brow cookie recipes.

This book would make a great gift basket ingredient accompanied by some gourmet teas and fine china cups.Few things are a more civilized tradition than afternoon tea, but Rodgers makes it a more homey, American tradition by pairing tea with cookies rather than scones.

This volume is guaranteed to placate the cookie monster on your gift list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: The Everything Cookies & Brownies Cookbook
Since a child I have been in love with the Snickerdoodle. Yeah, I know it is just a sugar cookie with cinnamon added but I love them. I would gladly give up chocolate chip and even oatmeal raisin for Snickerdoodles. Part of it is flavor but mostly it is nostalgic. They were my mother's specialty. Everybody's moms made chocolate chip, peanut butter and the like but only my mother made Snickerdoodles.

So naturally when I got my review copy of The Everything Cookies & Brownies Cookbook by Marye Audet (Adams Media, 2009) I turned directly to the recipe for Maple Snickerdoodles. I quickly thumbed my way to page 84. Wow! Maple syrup and maple sugar? These weren't the Snickerdoodles my mom made, but what she intended.

Audet's book has more than just this one recipe, in fact it has 300 recipes for any occasion. Baklava? It's in there. Chocolate-Peanut Butter Whoopie Bars? Of course. S'Mores Brownies? Yep those too. The next time that pushy eight year old starts pushing her troop cookies on you under the threat that they're only available once a year just turn to the Chocolate Thin Mints recipe on page 111 and show her who's boss.

There is plenty of teaching in the book as well. A chapter on cookie baking basics gives tips and shortcuts. It also defines the different leaveners and the resulting styles of cookie derived from them. There are chapters devoted to the exotic, kid-friendly recipes and recipes for special needs cookies (gluten-free for celiacs, sugar substitutes for diabetics, egg/dairy free, etc.). If you are looking for a good "introduction to cookies" cookbook then The Everything Cookies & Brownies Cookbook is that book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whether a novice or experienced cookie baker, you will find lots to like in this practical, comprehensive cook book.
This is the time of year when the thoughts of novice and experienced cooks alike turn to baking fragrant, warm-from-the-oven, delicious cookies. But between the favorite family recipes and the thousands of cookie recipes online - let's face it - who needs another cookbook? The answer is, we all do, as long as it's the Everything Cookies and Brownies Cookbook by Marye Audet.

Though I am no domestic goddess, I have made my share of cookies over the years, and even I got a generous measure of good advice and new understanding in this cookbook of 300 cookie recipes. I tried three recipes, new to me: Cranberry Walnut Blondies, Whoopie Pies and Maple Snickerdoodles. I had outstanding, delicious success with all three, and I do believe the Whoopie Pies are my new favorite.

The Cookie Baking Basics in Chapter 1 are a must-read. Simple and helpful, there was information that I wish I had learned when I started out baking. Especially for a novice baker, the explanations of common cookie ingredients and techniques are confidence and success builders for all the recipes to come. Marye Audet includes short comments before each recipe, and sprinkles little facts throughout the book that enrich the recipes; which cookies freeze the best, this recipe is good for making with children, that is how to wrap cookies for shipping. There's also lots of advice on how to achieve lively variations of the cookies. Just as Julie Powell felt Julia Child's presence as she cooked through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, you can feel the warm and experienced presence of Marye Audet over your shoulder when you bake cookies from this book.

All the recipes I tried were clearly laid out and the results perfect. The Cranberry Walnut Blondies were simple, and delicious. I haven't made Snickerdoodles for years, but was intrigued by Marye's Maple version, which were subtle and marvelous. Finally, I made the Whoopie Pies, which was as easy as...pie. The Cream Filling was very unusual to make, microwaving milk and flour to make a paste, refrigerating it, and later beating it with other ingredients until it gets "light and airy" and doubles in volume. I was very skeptical of the gluey milk and flour, but sure enough, it magically turned into a fluffy filling, perfect between the cake-like chocolate cookies. I wanted them to keep for a while, so I wrapped them individually and froze them as was suggested, and they were absolutely fantastic. As much as I enjoyed them, they were also a big hit with my son's university roommates.

My only complaint of the book is that the index is far less helpful than it could be. That is a small negligence, however, in what is a very fine and useful cookbook. Donna Hay, who for a while wrote The Cookbook Critic blog, said that, "the main problem with most books is the description of HOW. How to prep the ingredients, how to assemble them, how to brown or broil or sauté -- the problem is very often a faulty description of HOW." The How, the Why and the Even More is clearly laid out in The Everything Cookies and Brownies cookbook, and the result is Delicious. ... Read more

A great book for an experienced cookie baker and also many recipes for the novice. After reading some reviews, I wanted to comment that this is a book mainly for cookies from scratch. It does use a variety of ingredients but all are available in local stores. Some cookies are easy but many are time consuming and well worth the effort. The cranberry pockets are delightful and a favorite of many people. The Christmas Flowers are a wonderful family project and make wonderful gifts. They are hand molded so everyone can be creative. This project alone would be worth the price of the book. If you follow directions they will be even more lovely than the picture in the book. The lemon poppyseed melts are tastey and simple. The Zimtsterne are so good but since they are are meringue type cookie they can be a bit complicated.I highly recomend this book if you like something new and exciting.I use it every year and write notes all over the pages so you can tell it is well loved.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry Dough!Dry Dough!
I'm not saying I'm the best cookie-maker in the world, but I do know how to turn a few out.I tried four recipes in this book -- following them to the LETTER -- and in each one (most notably the mint chocolate chip sticks, the choc hazelnut with caramel & the orange snowballs) the dough came out dry and difficult to work with.Which, of course, resulted in disasters for cookies.A lot of wasted effort and ingredients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of inventive cookies
I really enjoyed this book.Put together by the folks at Better Homes and Gardens you know it is a recipe book that is filled with quality recipes that turn out well.I enjoyed this book because of its variety. Some cookie cookbooks are just a collection of a bunch of similar recipes. This book has many recipes for all sorts of different kinds of cookies. This book features pecan balls, shortbread, mascarpone creams, brown sugar balls, and so much more. The book gives in dept instructions on decorating. If you are looking for something off the beaten path, and a book that actually features pictures of all of the recipes, well this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent
This is a beutilful book with some very good recipes. But what I do not like is that there are some recipes that call for cookie or cake mixes. If I want to make a brownie, I do not need to buy a book.Simply, I follow the instructions of the package. It is true that sometimes a mix can be enriched, but I find that many times a recipe changes as the brand of the cake mix changes. There are nice photos and ideas, and international cookies. That is why I put four stars. ... Read more
