Product Description
Carole Walter’s fans know her as an award-winning author, teacher, and mentor, and her new book will keep them cheering, as she turns her attention to the most popular theme in home baking: cookies.

Packed with more than 200 delectable recipes and more than 150 tantalizing photographs, Great Cookies skillfully and joyfully answers the call for a colorful, all-inclusive cookie book. From traditional favorites like Snickerdoodles, Oatmeal Raisin, and Favorite Lemon Squares to future stars of the cookie jar like the trail mix–inspired Teton Trailers and chewy, chocolaty Midnight Macaroons, Great Cookies provides something to satisfy every taste and every occasion.

There’s even a section devoted to the quintessential American cookie—chocolate chip. With nuts or without? White chocolate or milk? Chocolate dough? Oatmeal in the dough? Carole provides a dozen chocolate chip recipes in all, plus definitive research on a crucial issue: “Not All Chocolate Chips Are Created Equal.”
Drop cookies. Bar cookies. Piped, pressed, and rolled. Great Cookies covers every conceivable method for baking these tasty confections. In the more than thirty years that she has studied and taught baking, Carole has cataloged a wealth of helpful tips and troubleshooting hints that for the first time are gathered in one collection.

With guidelines for measuring and substituting ingredients, storing and freezing, recapturing that fresh-from-the-oven flavor, decorating, even gift-wrapping and shipping, Great Cookies addresses all the basics and then some. And this ultimate guide is rounded out with authoritative information on ingredients, equipment, and the foolproof techniques for which Carole is known, including the essential “Secrets To” hints for every type of cookie.

With master baker Carole Walter by your side, you may never look at a glass of ice cold milk the same way again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sensational cookies
A great book filled with excellent recipes. Would like to have a photo with each recipe so I can see what they look like. Many lovely recipes are without photos.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, recipes hit or miss
"Great Cookies" is put together really well with a huge amount of recipes logically split into sections based on the cookie type, i.e. hand formed, international, pressed, etc.The writing is terrific and quite helpful and the photography is beautifully done.

I've had this book for about 1 year now and have used approximately 20 of the recipes from each of the sections. Some of the recipes, "giant ginger spice cookies" and "coconut crusted key lime napoleons" for example, came out wonderfully - better than I could have expected. The end product was easy to get to and SO delicious and flavorful.Other recipes however, I would say about 1/3 of the ones I've made, didn't turn out at all.The flavor was either all wrong or the texture ruined the flavor or the recipe was simply too hard to follow. The oatmeal raisin cookies were dry and utterly lacking in the usual zest needed in this type of cookie.Strange ingredients, such as corn syrup, are included in what should other wise be simple recipes like chocolate chip cookies.I've had quite a few cookies look nothing like the photo accompanying the recipe and taste nothing like was promised from the description.I'm a fairly experienced baker and have been pretty disappointed by the results on several occasions.

Overall, I would recommend this book but don't rely on a recipe for entertaining until you've tested it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookie Book Ever!!! Throw all the others away....
I probably own well over 1000 cookbooks, just because I am an obsessive collector. For years, I searched for the best cookie recipe because Nestle just didn't do it for me. I bought this book, and I no longer had to look for one. This book has the best cookie recipes, and they all turn out well. I have not had a disastrous cookie yet. I have tried the peanut butter, sugar, snicker doodle, chocolate chip (white/semisweet), chocolate chip peanut butter, chocolate chip oatmeal, oatmeal raisin cookies, etc. "My cookies" are a hit with everyone who tries them. I for the most part, don't follow the recipes as they are written. I just melt the butter, dump everything else in, mix by spoon, and put in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. I bake according to the recipe temperature, and my cookies come out great. As far as I am concerned, my method is simpler and it takes less preparation time. I am now planning to sell all of my other cookie books back to amazon, because they suck in comparison. The only exception are Marcy Goldman's cookbooks. Anything besides Carole Walter or Marcy Goldman is a waste of money. By the way, if you are a diabetic, these cookie recipes aren't for you (unless you are able to sustain your sweet tooth to a mere nibble). As for everyone else, there is a cookie in here that will make the harshest cookie critic smile with anticipation. I am going to have to add another copy of this book to my library, because I have worn the first one out.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
I bought this book because I was looking for a recipe for Italian Rainbow cookies. I've tried about 8 different recipes from this book and each one has been fantastic. The cookies produced from these recipes come out better tasting than anything you will find in a bakery. If you can follow a recipe you will not regret this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good recipes, clear instruction,...some minor errors
Made a few cookies from this book. In the bars section, I've tried a few recipes but found some typos that made the instruction a little confusing but not difficult to overcome. Didnt' really like the section that used the premix ingredients. Wished that section was written with something a little more interesting. Otherwise a good cookie book to have on hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to your cookbook library!
Every Christmas my mom, sister and I have a gift exchange; however, since times are tough we decided to try something different. We had a cookie exchange.I bought this book give me some ideas for new cookies to try.Success.They all turned out delicious.Of course my husband had to test them out before I took them to make sure they weren't poisoned...upon doing so he begged me to make an extra dozen to leave at home! This is a fun book to read as well if you are like me and enjoy reading cookbooks. It's especially great if you need to whip up something in a hurry for a party or any other special occasion...they have recipes that require little or even some Betty Crocker boxed cake mix.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great basic cookie book
This is a great basic cookie book filled with more than 200 recipes for all kinds of cookies, from the tried and true classics (chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, molasses) to more trendy treats (tiramisu cheesecake bars, amaretto brownies, orange almond biscotti, cappuccino pistachio biscotti).

The Betty Crocker Cookie book begins with lots of helpful information on the "doughs" and "doughn'ts" of cookie baking, which is important for those new to cookie baking.Detailed explanations for how to measure ingredients, the effects of different fats on cookie texture, melting chocolate, common baking equivalents and substitutions, and the effects different kinds of equipment, such as cookie sheets can have on your cookies. There are also helpful tips and hints for rolling dough evenly, lining baking pans, cooling, storing, and freezing cookies.

There are chapters devoted to:

Easy Drop Cookies
Bars and Brownies
Cookies for Kids
Cookies Made from a Mix
Hand Shaped and Pressed Cookies
Rolled Cut Out Cookies
Fancy Cookies for Celebrations
Cookies for Special Diets

Pictures for many of the cookies are scattered throughout the book. Most pages include additional tips and hints for cookie baking success in the sidebar.

If you are an experienced cookie baker, you may find this cookbook too basic. If you prefer to bake only from scratch this may not be the best book for you either, since there is a whole chapter devoted to using mixes. This is also not the Betty Crocker Cookie Book from 1963. It has been updated significantly to reflect current baking trends.

If you are new to cookie baking and/or prefer easy home style cookies that don't take all day or a require a culinary degree, this is definitely a book you'll want for your collection.I've made more than a dozen recipes from this book that have all turned out well and have many more pages with recipes I want to try tagged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Cookie Book Ever
Betty Crocker's Cookie Book has an excellent and wide range of cookies.

We've enjoyed making a number of these cookies, and my work colleagues think my wife's baking is suitably professional for a shop. The great recipes in this book is what they don't know of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cookie cookbook.....
......with lovely photos and great recipes.

The biscotti recipes are not only great, they present a good variety of biscottis that I've never tried before: Pine Nut and Honey Biscotti, Pistachio and Orange Biscotti, and Almond, Lemon and Anise Biscotti. All tasted wonderful and really impressed my family!

The remainder of the cookbook is divided into bar, drop and specialty cookie recipe sections and I have found recipes that kids love (Peanut and Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies), recipes that intrigued me (Walnut-Cardamom Viennese Crescents), recipes that were a sure thing at family gatherings or parties at work (White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Blondies, especially whe served still slightly warm). I could go on and on, but you get my drift. This cookbook is loaded with wonderful, treasured cookie and biscotti recipes and I highly recommend it!!

Amazon.com Review
Growing up in a close-knit, Italian American family, Maria Bruscino Sanchez was surrounded by tradition: food, customs, and celebrations from the "old country" were lovingly observed, and if the original meaning was sometimes hidden beneath the patina of a new culture, the respect and desire to stay connected to the past remained. As an adult, Sanchez turned family tradition into her livelihood, opening Sweet Maria's bakery in Waterbury, Connecticut, where she re-created the cakes and cookies of her youth--but with a distinctly American twist. With Sweet Maria's Italian Cookie Tray, Sanchez offers her culinary treasures to an even wider audience; recipes range from drop and molded cookies to filled ones, biscotti and biscuits, taralle and pizelles, and many more. Cookie lovers will find plenty to devour in this compilation of Italian American favorites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Maria's cookies
I am baking cookies for my son's wedding. It is tradition at an Italian wedding to have a cookie table for the guests to enjoy and take home.I found some very tasty recipes in this book that took me back to my Nana's kitchen when I was a child. They are not only delicious but are also beautiful!

3-0 out of 5 stars Tastes Good, but the texture is all wrong
It may be that I do not have a confectioner's oven, but the texture of my cookies came out all wrong. Still tastes good, but looked nothing like a florentine. Still, it's a fun book to read through. But don't expect fabulous cookies, unless you are willing to make a tester batch and adjust the recipe. Good luck and happy baking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookies
I am always looking for new cookie recipes and this book really fits the bill.Being Italian I love to make those cookies around the holidays and this book will help me a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Size, No Photos
The book arrived as listed! It also doesn't contain any pictures as I was hoping it would. Half the battle in cooking is knowing what the end product will turn out to look like. I skimmed the book for various recipes and there are quite a few I am looking forward to trying. Should come in handy around Christmas time for our cookie bake-off!

Product Description

Marcel Desaulniers, the prize-winning, bestselling author of such classics as Death by Chocolate, The Burger Meisters, and Desserts To Die For, continues down the decadent road he has paved with sweets, turning his attention to one of America's favorite temptations: cookies.

With his customary wit and clarity of style, Desaulniers has taken cookies to new heights in this stunning collection of seventy-five easy-to-follow recipes, each of which is captured in full-color splendor. Pared-down preparations, concise instructions, and satisfying results make the chocolate indulgences offered in this book the perfect antidote for anyone who has ever considered baking "work."

No one will be able to withstand the temptation of these chocolate cookie combinations, from the simple and delightful Chocolate Peanut Butter Bengal Cookies or Chocolate Raspberry "Cookiecupcakes," to the intricate and impressive Golden Spider Webs with Wicked Ganache and Raspberry Rapture and Chocolate Balloon Cups with Oven-Roasted Pears. Desaulniers also lets us in on some old family recipes; Hessie Rae's Chocolate Pecan Tart Cookies and Mrs. D's Chocolate Chip Cookies make you wonder what other undivulged secrets he's been saving.

As Desaulniers writes in his introduction, "Rather than showcasing towering confections like those in Death by Chocolate and Desserts To Die For, this is a collection of chocolate cookies, bars, brownies, nougat, brittle, praline, ice-cream sandwiches, candies, and biscuits that you can hold in your hand and pop in your mouth. O.K., so I went overboard and pulled out the plate in the chapter 'More Than a Mouthful.' But as Mae West said, 'Too much of a good thing is wonderful.'"Amazon.com Review
There ought to be a law against cookies as sinfully delicious as the ones Marcel Desaulniers presents in his Death by Chocolate Cookies. Chocolate Peanut Butter Love Bars, Chocolate Pecan Tart Cookies, White Chocolate Peppermint Patties, Chocolate Mango Ambush--the names alone are life-threatening, while the full-page color photographs are almost guaranteed to send serious chocoholics into cardiac arrest. Desaulniers devilishly tempts the reader with 75 easy-to-follow recipes that promise untold delight in every bite, from the simplest Chocolate Raspberry Cookiecupcake to the fascinatingly intricate Golden Spider Webs with Wicken Ganache. Dip into Death by Chocolate Cookies at your own risk: this much chocolate is almost certainly lethal! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Choc-o-licious
Great chocolate recipes!I've tried several and so far my favorites were the black gold cookies and the outrageously successful excessively somethingorother peanut butter brownies!

1-0 out of 5 stars Five tries and I am out
I am an experienced home baker with a well-equipped kitchen.I have tried five different recipes from this book--and they are just not that good. Road trip cookies--I have had better, brown sugar chocolate chip bars--not as good as you would think; Mrs. D's chocolate chip cookies--meh, maple walnut chocolate praline--hope you have good dental insurance. The dogwood bark was ok--but it is just melted chocolate over nuts.

As other reviewers have commented, there are a lot of errors.I have had to troubleshoot every recipe.Perhaps the recipes were not tested?

I am putting this cookbook in my give away pile so that I am not tempted by the lovely photos to attempt any more of these recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Cookies
I am not a big fan of this author, but this book is a happy exception. His other books are OK resources for professionals and amateur pastry chefs, but worthless for the average, casual home cook. This is the only one of Mr. Saulniers' books that I feel safe in recommending to a home cook. It is, in short, a collection of very good chocolate cookie recipes, both in flavor and in written recipe quality.

In most cookbooks, cookie recipes are an afterthought with standard recipes casually tossed off in a few sentences. This book is entirely different: each cookie recipe has complete, detailed instructions for each step, including a color photo of the end result.Even someone who has not baked many cookies should have no problems successfully making these cookies. For those who can do the cookie recipe on the back of the chocolate chip bag, this book is the next step. I tried some seemingly incorrect recipes (recipes with no eggs, doughs that seemed to have the wrong balance, etc.), but they all came out as advertised, and I had no trouble with any of them, though I noted that some instructions were inadequate, e.g. cooking something in a saucepan for a certain number of minutes with no indication as to what end result you are looking for.It is also the only cookbook I know of that lists the complete mise en place including all equipment, materials, and ingredients, something I wish more cookbooks would do.

Only in the last chapter ("More Than a Mouthful") is the author up to his old tricks: professional techniques inadequately explained; here, home cooks should ignore it, but B&P people should pay close attention. I also note that some photos are cheats, in other words if you prepare the recipe exactly as written, yours will not exactly look like the picture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beauty is skin deep
Such beautiful pictures, and they are great inspiration. Makes you want to spend the day in the kitchen. There it ends. I tried the white chocolate-candy cane recipe twice. It just doesn't work.We (I have a professional kitchen) added flour to make a manageable batter, but after baking could not get them off the baking sheet.More adjustments, and finally succeeded in making a cookie that no one liked. We also tried the two layer desert with brownie bottom.Expensive mess.Thebeautiful photographs are worthy of framing or put the whole book on your coffee table.

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I got the wrong edition...
I have read the previous reviews and I am puzzled. I do not like this book at all. I have never written a review before but this book drove me to it. I am an experienced baker and tried two recipes following the instructions carefully. Both failed miserably and I am not willing to waste the butter, or more importantly, the chocolate, to try another.
My first attempt was the Paisely Brownies. The recipe called for 12 ounces of butter (yes, ounces, not tablespoons). While nervous about 3/4 of a pound of butter going into essentially a double batch of brownie batter, I forged ahead. What I got was incredible greasy brownies with a gummy raspberry topping.I figured the butter amount must have been a typo so I tried again with 12 TABLESPOONS of butter and while the brownies were less greasy, they were still mushy in the middle with a gummy raspberry topping.Next I tried the Topsy Turvys (didn't even get around to making the sorbet or the pineapple topping). Each attempt to mold the baked cookie into bowl shapes yielded greasy messes on my counter.Perhaps I got the two dogs out of the whole bunch but as I have said before, I'm not willing to waste any more butter, chocolate, parchment paper, etc. on any of his recipes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection but the Linzer Stars recipe was terrible.
Interesting collection of different categories of cookies. Many with pictures, tips and suggestions on the side margins on the pages. Thought I tried several recipes and got so so comments from family and friends, the one recipe that gave me the most trouble was the Linzer Stars recipe.Followed the recipe directly and 6 out of 7 times were failures. The one time success took all day to make the cookies one at a time because the dough was so so wet and sticky. Even after refrigerating the dough as directed in the recipe. Tried the caramel cream sandwich cookies recipe a couple of times following the recipe. The cookies came out extremely hard each time and did not spread out when baking, thus the sandwich cookies were chunky size. Other than that I will still continue to try the recipes in this cookie book with caution, but having made cookies from other cook books and magazines, I had much much better first attempt success on each with zero failures.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME COOKBOOK!
I have a large cookbook collection, mostly on baking. This book looked really nice so I ordered it. It is brand-new and I got it for a great price. I received the book in less than a week which was really fast. Alot (but not all) of the recipes have very colorful photos of the finished product. Every recipe has nutrition information plus extra information such as tips or facts about the recipe. It also contains bar recipes which are my favorite to bake. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone, even younger bakers since the recipes are very clear and easy to read. This is a great addition to my collection and has alot of recipes I can't wait to try.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun little cookie book...
I purchased this book for my wife a few months ago, because she enjoys making cookies for friends and family as gifts. I had previously purchase for her one of Mary Engelbreit's cookie books, which was a big hit. The Pooh cookie book was almost as successful. Particularly we enjoy the Oatmeal Raisin, and Pecan Finger cookies.

As for the cookies themselves, most of them seem to have traditional cookie ingredients. Occasionally you will find one with apricot jam, or allspice. As I am flipping through this book one last time, I think that I want to try the Chocolate Chip Macaroons soon. I would definitely recommend this book as a gift book or for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book

I love the ChewyChocalte-Chocolate Chunk Cookies. They're soooo good! And not only is thiscookbook great because of its recipes, but it also has the cute and funnycharacter of Winnie-the-Pooh. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to learn how to handle Royal Icing.
This is the best book I've found to teach yourself how to use Royal Icing. The information is presented clearly with both written and illustrated instructions. I give this book to all my friends who want to learn to use Royal Icing.
I have been using this book for over 10 years!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookie recipes!
Every recipe that I have tried thus far has been mind-blowing delicious! Everyone who receives these cookies from me has only the highest praise for them. Once they did not make it to the intended recipient for someone stole them to enjoy the cookies for themselves. (I never did discover the identity of the thief.) Though one recipe, "Sweet Cherry Treats", yielded a very soft cookie; it was so delectable that I made it work and it became one of my favorites. I have yet to ice any of the cookies that I have made from this cookbook for they are so scrumptious as is that I am afraid of spoiling an already good thing. You don't need another cookie cookbook if you have this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great investment!
I bought this book in 1998 and started making cookies almost immmediately.I loved the recipes and the techniques I found there.I made cookies for friends and family and teachers and coworkers for almost every holiday and special occasion I could think of.It was fun and I loved it.So much so that I started my own business in 2000, a bakery specializing in hand-decorated shortbread cookies.Every year is better, and I am finally a happy camper at work.I am sooooo glad I picked up this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment
The cookie recipes are disappointing. Some are for cookies that are not sturdy enough for cookie decorating. I found the proportions of ingredients in many of the recipes off, to the point where either they were too greasy or the cookie dough couldn't hold together. However, the instructions for how to decorate using different types of icing were helpful. I think this is a good book for ideas or design inspiration, but skip the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource!
Great decorating ideas and very tasty cookie recipes. I refer to this book often when I make cookie bouquets as gifts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book--eye candy (eye cookies?)
I love this book.I wanted to make beautiful sugar cookies. This book is just wonderful.I got it as a gift for my friends and we just can't stop looking at it.The photos are beautiful-one cookie per page and a description of how that cookie is decorated on the opposite page.I also recommend the companion book that covers cookie decorating for all seasons. There are not a lot of different recipes in this cookie book, but if that is what you are looking for try "Cookie Swap" by Julia Usher. We were absolutely thrilled with how our cookies turned out this year. Our friends and neighbors were so impressed!

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT decorating ideas
I bought this book online thinking it was going to be cute cookie decorating ideas. The recipes are solid and it is still a good cookbook, just be wary that it is NOT like the Whimsical Bakehouse cake book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST cookies!!!
I think this is the best Christmas cookie cookbook - ever! Normally I might like one or two recipes out of a cookbook but with this one, you CAN'T go wrong! I did all my Christmas baking out of this book this year and they were ALL keepers! My husband took a bite of the pecan cream cheese pastry crescents (basically Rugelach) and immediately said, "Homerun!" The lemon crumble bars are the best I have EVER had ... the rainbow cookies will be made in my house every Christmas from here on out. I wasn't looking for a cookbook with ton of fancy decorating tips b/c there is no way I would have time for that. The rainbow cookies took a ton of time but where worth the effort. Most of the other cookies/bars were assembled/baked very quickly. Nothing seemed overly complicated but every one of the cookies was simply AWESOME!
I am buying several of these books and sending them to friends and family. If you are looking for the best cookie recipes you can find, buy this book! You won't be disappointed! I love that there is a huge variety of cookies in just this one book so I didn't have tons of computer print-outs or other cookbooks in my kitchen. Just this one slim book! It's perfect!

2-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING
Cover cookie - NOT IN BOOK - NOR IS PRACTICALLY ANYTHING LIKE IT.Has some good 'cookie' recipes - however, bought it for state of the art style impressive decorating, as seen in upscale merchandise (like the cover picture) - also saw their 'cake' book - ALSO HAS GORGEOUS COVER - VERY LITTLE INSIDE ABOUT HOW TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK.I would say it borders on false advertising.

Product Description
Elaborately decorated cookies fill the shelves of high-end bakery cases, tempting shoppers with bright colors and whimsical shapes. The cookies are beautiful, but buying them in a bakery can be shockingly expensive, and their flavor often doesn’t live up to their appearance. Now home bakers can have their pretty cookies and enjoy eating them too!

Thanks to the clear instructions and practical methods developed by authors Valerie Peterson and Janice Fryer, amateur cookie crafters can achieve bakery-quality design and homemade fresh taste. Cookie Craft gives readers access to the entire world of decorated cookies, beginning with an inspirational gallery of 150 colorful cookies guaranteed to start those creative juices flowing.

The authors go on to discuss ingredients, supplies, equipment and technique. They include four delicious recipes for rolled cookie doughs (Traditional Sugar, Chocolate, Nutty, and Gingerbread) that provide perfect blank canvases for decorating, and, of course, their recipe for versatile Royal Icing.

In the most important section, they share the design techniques accumulated and perfected during hundreds of afternoons spent crafting thousands of cookies. Cookie crafters will learn how to pipe, flood, and sugar their cookies, how to design color palettes that work with every season, how to make cookies stand up in fun 3-D structures, and much more! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love this Book!!!
I've always wanted to bake and decorate beautiful cookies that actually tasted as good as they look. After reading this book, I was fully prepared to dive right in and get it right the first time out. Well, that's exactly what happened. My daughter and I made 28 cute little baby face cookies for a baby shower. We followed the instructions and suggestions straight out of the book along with the cookie and icing recipe and the cookies turned out so well that I'm inspired to keep baking and decorating...for every occasion. The writers of this book definitely did their "homework" and made all the mistakes by "trial and error" and they shared all of that experience and expertise with the reader. You don't have to make mistakes because they've already worked it all out for you. I will also be buying their Christmas book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book...
I got a lot of ideas for decorating, even though I thought some of the designs were basic. But that's OK--there's something for every level. I got a couple of wooden sticks at the craft shop for two bucks and they work great! I love the method they describe; it's easy to do. I really appreciated the tips for freezing, mailing and storing. I've made the basic vanilla and chocolate cookies which were really good, with a subtle sweetness--so a nice blank canvas for the other sugar and toppings you're going to put on. I made the dough with pecans as well; it's fine, but a little too crumbly and rich-tasting for me. I just have another pecan shortbread recipe I like better, I guess...

4-0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring cookies
Not a book of recipes, this book shows how to create decorative effects on cookies using icing, sugars, coloring, and other embellishments.Eye-popping color photos, and clear step-by-step instructions make this a great read for the home baker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas
I have not made or decorated any of these cookies yet, but I loved looking through this book and seeing all the creative ideas.I am looking forward to using these ideas as I make cookies.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to impress with cookies
If you've ever wanted to have cookies look amazing, look no further than this book for inspiration and ways in which to turn plain cookies into something special. You'll probably be spending a little more time than normal on each cookie, and decorating with fondant as opposed to icing, but there will be little disappointment in the outcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars bake me I'm yours...cookie
Using a few "REALLY GOOD" recipes for the cookies and (I loved the) frosting recipes (from scratch, rolled fondant, royal icing, buttercream, piping gel, sugar glue), alot of "VERY CUTE" cookies are created!!! Well worth the money spent!

4-0 out of 5 stars big inspiration, little instruction
Having made many gourmet decorated cookies using Royal icing, I bought this book because I was interested in exploring cookie decorating with fondant. The cookies are beautiful, but some are quite labor intensive and the author is very light on instruction. There are a few basic recipes (which I ended up not using), and then two pages per cookie -- one page is a photo and the other is a small page of instruction (with usually only 3-5 steps -- a visual learner like me would love to have a few illustrations or pics of assembly). Once I got past feeling intimidated by the author's beautiful handiwork and lack of teaching skills, I have made several cookies in this book with great success using a marshmellow fondant recipe I found elsewhere. I did notice that the author does a few things that I consider unnecessary, like using piping gel to attach fondant, which I have never even purchased. (I just use water.) So basically what I am saying is ... skip the instructions and recipes, but shell out the small price of the book for the inspiration alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars No experience
A very good book with great pictures but a little advance for some like me that is unexperience baking cookies.

Oh we've been using these recipies for years now!The Elves can't get enough of them. And Santa, well, I think you know how HE feels about cookies! Why not bake some of the special treats in this book with your little ones, and leave a warm plate out for Santa Claus - with a cold glass of milk - on Christmas Eve! I happen to know for a fact he loves every cookie in this whole entire book! Who knows, maybe he'll leave you a little something extra if you make the ones with the vanilla frosting and sprinkles he likes so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book with Cookie Recipes and Great Ideas for Kids!!!
I bought this book November 1998 when my youngest daughter at the time was in the 4th grade and had a school project to do. So I took her to the book store looking through children's books for ideas and a project she could do. With all the books of ideas we found this is the book we chose and it caught my eye because it was up front of the store with all the Christmas displays and because the book had the words "Family & Kids" on it.As soon as we saw the "Holiday Garland" on page 22, that was what she wanted to do.

I bought the book, we made the "Best-ever Sugar Cookies on page 7 (which was very easy) to make the "Holiday Garland". We made the words "Noel", "Merry Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" by following the directions and used their suggested ideas. My daughter presented her project to the class, she received a good grade on it and the children enjoyed eating the cookies.

In the past we also did the "Tasty Gift Ideas" on page 50, which everyone thought was cute and made the "Peanut Butter Sealed with a Kiss" cookies, which was good and fun to do. Just recently my niece borrowed my book for her christmas cookies that she's been making for years every Christmas. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially with kids, the cookie recipes are good, the creative gift giving ideas are good, along with the creative ideas to entertain kids with cookies are fun and not only Christmas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed
I found that the cookies in this book that are actually fun and creative, are by far outnumbered by the usual, standard recipes that can be found in any cookie book.
I expected more inspiration from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good cookie book
I've made several of the cookies in this book for Christmas gifts in the last two years and I've had wonderful comments on the cookies.Good ideas for gifts, etc.

This is a beautiful book.I haven't used any of the recipes yet, but I have several marked that i want to try.I have enjoyed just looking through it

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookie books I own (and I am a cookie junkie
I'm so glad I found this book! Every recipe I tried so far has been spectacular and so tasty that it disappeared in a minute!
The recipes are laid out really well, with clear step by step instructions and lots of reference "tags" to give more information about ingredients or interesting substitutions or even "make it special" suggestions to dress up your creations.
The recipes are really easy, but the results can make people think you spent the whole day in the kitchen. I tried both of the recipes pictured on the cover and they got rave reviews, without being much fuss. And the others were not too difficult either.
The book is divided into sections for rolled, dropped, bar cookies and so on, making it easy to find what you feel like making. There are very nice and yummy pictures of many recipes to give you an idea of the results.
Maybe the only negative thing is that these recipes are all very rich and not good at all if you are counting calories or have health problems, but I guess you are not supposed to make cookies, if you are on a diet :P! They all have nutritional information, though, so at least you can choose the less "sinful" ones.
The sidebars explaining the different ingredients are very informative and can help you with recipes from other books, too, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADORE this book!!
Oh my goodness Elinor Klivans you never fail me. This was the first book I ever bought by Klivans, but after trying some of the recipes I had to get more! The chocolate stuffed chocolate chip cookies: tollhouse, step aside. The ginger chewies are in constant demand. And as for the double chocolate chocolate chip cookies, I won't be sharing those anytime soon. This book is a must have for everyone! Even if you're not a baker, the ease of the recipes and the amazing results make this book a necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Have used this book many times and really love it.The double chocolate chip cookies are great, and so are the recipes for sugar cookies and shortbread.Haven't tried them all, by any means, but I'm glad I own this book.

Edit:4/17/10 Have now tried the butterscotch blondies and the super fudge ice cream sandwiches too. This is my go-to cookie book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best chocolate chip cookies I have ever made or tasted!
I saw mention of this book on one of my favorite cooking blogs and decided to find it at my local library.I tried my hand at two of the recipes:Chocolate Chip-stuffed Cookies and Big City Black-and-Whites.Both were absolutely yummy and easy to make.Ms. Klivans' directions are straightforward and require no specific expertise (I'm an average cook/baker).As mentioned in the title of this review the chocolate chip cookies were the best ever!Big, huge, chewy cookies--you won't believe it!My family loved both recipes. My 6yo loved helping to bake them, too.

My only suggestions for a future edition would be to include at least one picture for each recipe (not all cookies were shown) and also to include the nutritional content (although they are huge and decadent cookies...maybe it's better not to know!).

I am returning my copy to the library today (after renewing it twice and now it's two days overdue!)...plan to order my own copy soon!If you love cookies--get this book! You will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars OMG!
As a world class baker--this is the best book of all. Love Rosie's book too, but this woman has the goods--the baked goods--and she's from MAINE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and Creative!
What an outstanding cookbook! They recipes in this book are so creative and different.I was very pleased with it and was so excited when I was looking through it.Great tips are given, and as an avid baker, I still learned some things! My ONLY gripe would be that I wish it had more pictures of the cookies.Only certain cookies are shown, but the recipes are fabulous! ...
