Product Description
Bierman takes a fresh look at the "whys" of the great stock market crash of 1929, analyzes the economic situation, and presents sound explanations for the initial decline that are not dependent on the assumption of overvaluation. This book challenges the "facts" and overturns previously held notions to reach a dramatically different conclusion from most widely read books on the subject. Was there reason for optimism in 1929? Was it a "Bubble"? Did the high level of stock market prices jeopardize the nation's prosperity? What about the Crash of 1987? Bierman believes that a more complete understanding of these and other questions can enhance current market decisions and allow for wiser forecasts of future market trends. ... Read more

Product Description
Do you act differently when you’re depressed? Are you slow to make decisions or take action?Do you hesitate and hunker down, waiting for a better time to take a chance on something new? What if the majority of people in the country shared these feelings? If we are all depressed, we don’t buy as much, take as many trips or invest aggressively. We lose our confidence in the future, especially in the predictability of tomorrow being “normal”.

The 1930s, 1970s and the 2000s were tough times for everyone. This book creates a profile of movies we like when we’re positive or negative about the future. In times of depression (both emotionally and economically), we like different movies than in times of prosperity. It depends on the movie genre, story and quality. Each factor contributes to our “movie mood” and a measure of our collective state of mind.

Join me in reviewing 30 years of depression and the movies we loved during these dismal times; movies like King Kong, The Dark Knight, The French Connection, Young Frankenstein, The Hangover and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Each confirmed a change in movie mood.

If you understand the emotional signals from the box office, you can take action in your own life with greater confidence, either to follow the crowd or move against it to seize new opportunities in your life, both financially and personally.

Product Description
Why bother with a book written three quarters of a century ago about the 1930s world economic crisis? Didn't John Kenneth Galbraith publish the definitive work on the subject in 1955?

Historians write with the benefit of distance and perspective. But there is nothing quite like a good contemporary account.

Richard Lewinsohn combines wit, perspicacity and a sceptical eye for the follies of his own times with a rare historical perspective.

It took journalistic courage to argue in 1934 that the crisis he chronicled - though the greatest in history - was neither unprecedented nor likely to be the last of its kind.

The financial upheavals since 2007 and the economic impact they have had underline Lewinsohn's wisdom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Think you've read every account of the 'original' financial crisis?
Although I didn't contribute to this book, and I have no ongoing financial interest in it, I will declare that I helped out with the publishing process. With that admission out of the way --

I thought I had read every account of the 'original' financial crisis... but not this one. Thanks to Peter Bild's translation, we can now all enjoy Richard Lewinsohn's classic account. Uniquely, this account of the 1929 Wall Street Crash and subsequent econimic depression was written 'at the time', yet its lessons are relevant to the more recent financial crisis. This sense of relevance is enhanced by the inclusion of Peter's final "Rhymes for Our Times" that should have you raising at least a wry smile.

Product Description
Financier Bernard Baruch credited the lessons he learned from Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds with his decision to sell all his stock ahead of the financial crash of 1929.

Financial writer Michael Lewis includes the financial mania chapters in his book The Price of Everything as one of the six great works of economics, along with writings by Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, David Ricardo, Thorstein Veblen, and John Maynard Keynes.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds is a popular history of popular folly by Charles Mackay, first published in 1841. The book chronicles its targets in three parts: "National Delusions", "Peculiar Follies", and "Philosophical Delusions".

We all remember the Dot Com boom and bust of the 2001 but did you know the same thing happened in Holland with tulips in 1637.Among the financial manias described by Mackay is the Dutch tulip mania of the early seventeenth century.Tulip mania started in 1637 when tulips and tulip bulbs suddenly became fashionable in Holland. Everyone who was anyone had to own tulip bulbs The price of the bulbs went from a few coins and went up and up. Every one scrambled to own tulips the price soared until on tulip bulb was worth the price of a mansion. And then suddenly overnight the price dropped to nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful reading
The story of the Law Mississippi Scheme and paper money creation in the 1720s has uncanny similarities to the speculations leading to the Great Depression of 1929 and to the Subprime Crisis of 2008. IMHO this book should be required reading for investors, although some irrational exuberance is perhaps, on the whole, not such a Bad Thing for the economy in the long run and for individuals if they knew how to get out before they are toast, in the immortal words of Keynes... but can they? ...
