Product Description
Since the 1960s, testimony by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thousands of criminal cases has relied on evidence from Compositional Analysis of Bullet Lead (CABL), a forensic technique that compares the elemental composition of bullets found at a crime scene to the elemental composition of bullets found in a suspect's possession. Different from ballistics techniques that compare striations on the barrel of a gun to those on a recovered bullet, CABL is used when no gun is recovered or when bullets are too small or mangled to observe striations. "Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence" assesses the scientific validity of CABL, finding that the FBI should use a different statistical analysis for the technique and that, given variations in bullet manufacturing processes, expert witnesses should make clear the very limited conclusions that CABL results can support. The report also recommends that the FBI take additional measures to ensure the validity of CABL results, which include improving documentation, publishing details, and improving on training and oversight. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A very basic introduction
I purchased this book to help me do some analysis of human rights abuses (and also crimes) in Zimbabwe where I work. I was extremely disappointed by the book - I have no degree in geography or any field like criminal justice that might be related to this kind of work yet the contents of this book are so basic that anybody with a grain of sense could have worked it all out for themselves.
The only useful idea I got from the book was that in doing any kind of temporal analysis of criminal activity one should be careful of aggregating data by month as different months 1) are different lengths and 2) have differing numbers of eg Sundays in them. Perhaps I should have worked that out by myself as well!!!
Don't buy this book unless you are of below average intelligence or under the age of 17.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very easy to read and informative; it's a good introduction to Crime Analysis. As an intern, I already have some knowledge of the subject and this is helping to reinforce it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive goal oriented book !
I don't have time for a lot of theory. I need instructional material that must be on target. This well structured book brought me a much needed guideline of both crime analysis and crime mapping. My new system, GREAT.i, will be greatly aided by this comprehensive work. ... Read more

Product Description
Combating a growing drug trafficking industry that costs society over $30 billion annually can be a difficult and dangerous task. Not only are law enforcement officials faced with drug dealers who are becoming less reluctant to use deadly weapons against them, but they also have to keep up with the constant change in constitutional law. A trial-and-error approach to developing investigative skills can prove to be a costly approach for officials working in this war on drugs.Following the success of the best-selling first edition, Practical Drug Enforcement, Second Edition continues to offer law enforcement personnel from all jurisdictions a suitable guide for the general management of drug investigations and of drug enforcement units as a whole. This book offers an incisive look at the technical methods required to conduct successful drug investigations. It explores specific enforcement problems, such as marijuana cultivation, clandestine laboratories, crack houses, smuggling and prisons, ground smuggling, booby traps, search of vessels, and raid planning. This book covers the entire scope of drug enforcement from case initiation, to surveillance techniques, to special enforcement problems, to preparation for the courtroom. Practical Drug Enforcement, Second Edition will help law enforcement personnel stay up-to-date and maintain the edge over the drug dealers they are pursuing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, but...2.5 stars
I'd rather give this book 2.5 stars, but I don't have that option.I started off with three, but as I started to write out my criticism, I realized that three stars would be too generous.

While I appreciate what the author is trying to do with this book, this may be a case of trying to cover too much ground in a condensed work. The author provides an introduction to terrorist groups, various analytic methods, and touches on gangs and religiously-motivated extremism.Unfortunately, the broad brush approach isn't properly focuses. The author makes generalizations that can be misleading while skipping over more important information.

I've been searching for other honest reviews of this book and find it hard to believe that everyone truly rates this as five stars.Perhaps I'm not reading this book correctly, but there were many times where it seems the author contradicts himself within the same paragraph.I noticed that there is not an editor listed for this book and I believe that this may in fact be the main issue I have with the book...someone should be pushing to reorganize all of the information laid out and ask the author to clarify his points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Former Director
"I have witnessed an emphasis on agencies hiring, training, and even certifying analytical personnel to address homeland security, terrorism, and organized hate crime. The problem has been the lack of materials applicable to law enforcement. That was until Mr. Ronczkowski penned this book. Product Description
This book analyses the process of intelligence gathering in the particular context of the Netherlands, providing a qualitative framework of analysis as a contribution to the professionalisation and improvement of the process of using and gathering intelligence. At a time of increased concern about the use of effective intelligence worldwide this book will have many important lessons for the wider international policing and intelligence community. The book seeks to move away from an emphasis on evaluations of intelligence on the basis of particular incidents or events (such as 9/11) where the outcome of the danger is known, looking instead at the question of 'what is good intelligence?' without this being clouded by hindsight. The objective of the book rather is to construct a framework of analysis to enable the quality of reports to be evaluated in situations where crucial intelligence is absent, and where the outcome of a threat or danger is not known. The book also identifies which factors contribute to the quality of reports, and a number of recommendations for improvement are put forward. ... Read more

Product Description
Largely neglected by historians, political scientists, and criminal justice specialists, the available literature on the state police tends to be highly partisan and largely out of date. Based on legislative analysis and historical case study, this is an original contribution to our understanding of the development of the institution of the state police in the United States. Arguing that the creation of state police agencies was the result of a political process that reflected the interplay of a number of different forces, this is a rebuttal of rival interpretations of police development. The work should be of interest to criminal justice educators and political scientists on a college and university level, and to police historians. ... Read more

Product Description
This manual has been designed to help traffic accident investigators and reconstructionists meet the high standard of performance and expertise necessary to determine vehicle lamp status for “on” and “off” conditions at the time of a vehicle collision. Each chapter provides clear definitions of and statements about the topics it contains, with graduated commentary arranged so as to present a natural development and understanding of the chapter subject matter. A number of working hypotheses using examples and photographs are provided to assist the examining technician or analyst in the interpretation of items of evidence that might be presented. The text discusses examining the vehicle for exhibits, the precautions that must be taken in collecting and preserving evidence, lamp identification and analysis, hot and cold shock analysis, packaging and transferring exhibits to the forensic science laboratory, and the mistakes that are inherent in investigations and how to avoid them. In addition, the application of physics and vehicle behavior in relation to lamp damages is thoroughly discussed. The book has been written in a clear and concise style that is further enhanced by the liberal use of illustrations. It has been designed not only for use as a handy reference manual but also to be of assistance as a training manual for use in police training schools that include lamp examination as part of their curriculum. In addition, the text will be useful and practical for investigators, forensic technicians, attorneys, insurance investigators, and judges. ... Read more

Product Description
The Need for Professional Competence

For all the attention given to the forensic sciences in the media and the law, there is a glaring deficiency in the promotion of standards of competence. In the midst of fascinating scientific advances in the field, forensic science still suffers embarrassments from highly publicized scientific controversies and shoddy or fraudulent practices. The enactment of the Daubert ruling, which questions the qualification of a scientific “expert”, demonstrates the courts’ attempt to regulate a profession that ought to be self-regulating.  Libraries of books on technique can do nothing to promote forensic science without common governing standards of practice that ensures professional competence.

Common Ground

The first book of its kind, Ensuring Competent Performance in Forensic Practice: Recovery, Analysis, Interpretation, and Reporting promotes a common understanding of competence and demonstrates the application of standards and practice in all aspects of forensic science. Authors Fereday and Hadley, esteemed forensic scientists with forty and fifty years experience respectively, address the method and benefit of establishing occupational standards for collection of evidence, interpretation of scientific analysis, and appropriate methods of testimony.

Training and Assessment

The authors stress the standardization of proper training and testing procedures to ensure that every scientist employed in public and private practice has the credentials they require. They give clear guidelines for effective training programs based on occupational standards that support the development of competent practitioners. The book examines the importance of workplace assessments of competence against occupational standards and emphasizes the role and quality of those involved in the assessment process. The authors include several case studies demonstrating competence in practice and the methods to ensure consistent high standards in the future. ... Read more

Product Description
Significant advances in DNA analysis techniques have surfaced since the 1997 publication of the bestselling An Introduction to Forensic DNA Analysis. DNA typing has become increasingly automated and miniaturized. Also, with the advent of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) technology, even the most minute sample of degraded DNA can yield a profile, providing valuable case information. However, just as the judicial system slowly and reluctantly accepted RFLP and AmpliType® PM+DQA1 typing, it is now scrutinizing the admissibility of STRs.Acknowledging STR typing as the current system of choice, An Introduction to Forensic DNA Analysis, Second Edition translates new and established concepts into plain English so that laypeople can gain insight into how DNA analysis works, from sample collection to interpretation of results. In response to the shift toward more efficient techniques, the authors cover the legal admissibility of STR typing, expand the chapter on DNA databases, and revise the section on automated analysis. They also present key decisions and appellate or supreme court rulings that provide precedent at the state and federal levels.Discussing forensic DNA issues from both a scientific and a legal perspective, the authors of An Introduction to Forensic DNA Analysis, Second Edition present the material in a manner understandable by professionals in the legal system, law enforcement, and forensic science. They cover general principles in a clear fashion and include a glossary of terms and other useful appendices for easy reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great condition!
I am very happy to say that soon after I placed my order, I received the book in perfect condition. It was shrink wrapped and in great shape.

Thank you for your professsionalism and promptness :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great shipping!
The book arrived in a very timely manner. I will most definitely buy from this seller again if need be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ...
