3-0 out of 5 stars on the fence
The introduction to this book is very well written and informative. It is also filled with resources for families to use, a glossary and of course a how to guide of making toilet paper flowers. This doctor knows his stuff. The story itself is incredibly cheesy.
-"Julia took a deep breath and said, 'It's because I have a disease called Crohn's disease.' Nikki grabbed Julia's hands and they both sat down on her bed"-
I was actually laughing out loud at some parts because the writing does not reflect how kids speak to each other. There is no doubt though, this book has outlined the disease clearly, has diagrams and kids could possibly relate to Julia and her embarrassing, and challenging experiences. I'm on the fence, this book has a lot, but kids may question if you know them and their personality/age group at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine concept, but...
As a sufferer from Crohn's Disease, I was particularly interested in reading how a doctor would explain it to a child.I was disappointed. No child I know would talk to another using these words. The dialog was stilted, didactic and inappropriate for the age level. It is understandable that a doctor would have trouble talking on a simple level about a disease that is not simple.
The idea of making flowers from toilet paper, supposedly due to the numerous and lengthy trips to the bathroom that are often necessary, is a cute hook. However, in reality, many of those trips are too painful to be creative at the same time.
In summary, I don't think a child would understand the condition too much better after reading the book. They need easier words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
As a father with Crohn's disease, this book allowed me to give my daughters (ages 3&7), a more clear understanding of what their daddy goes through on a daily basis. It was so inspiational that, for my birthday, they made me my own bouquet of toilet paper roses. A must have for any parent that has crohn's

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story about a real disease
I found this book to be well written and illustrated, easy to understand and compassionate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book for kids with Crohn's!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book helped my family so much.It is a way to explain Crohn's to children in a way they will understand.I even got one for the school to help educate teachers and other children.
Hopefully this will help bring awareness to the cause.

It is based upon the venerable Natural Hygiene Self-healing System which has led million of people to lasting health. This powerful book covers diet, lifestyle and psychology, presenting the Vegan Diet Healing Plan with correct food combining. This is the only dietary approach which results in a clean bowel, while providing superior nutrition and liberating our full healing powers, for rapid healing and complete rejuvenation. The detailed easy-to-follow plan has proven to be effective in over 1,000 cases.

This book was written by a health counselor who himself used the plan to heal advanced ulcerative colitis in 1984 and has since enjoyed excellent health, counseling many IBD sufferers to health via his Colitis & Crohn's Health Recovery Services counseling business which he founded in 1993. Healthful lifestyle guidelines as well as 11 pages of testimonials, five medical endorsements and other inspirational tools are included. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad advice for something for which there is no cure
This is terrible advice for people who have UC or Chrohn's. First of all, low residue diets are essential for those with the condition. Going to mostly fruits and vegetables contradicts that and provides the body with too much hard to digest foods which can be quite painful during a flare up. Two, diet is not going to cure the disease. Some people with the condition have found that avoiding certain "trigger foods" will help you avoid a flare up. But eating a certain way will not cure you.

Additionally, it does not serve a UC or Crohn's sufferer to follow such a strict diet because you are likely to lose weight even when you're not flaring up just because it is not an adequate diet. Those of you that have had a flare up know that losing weight can happen quite rapidly. The best thing you can do is eat a well-balanced, healthy diet that is low of grease and fats and especially low on high fiber and hard to digest foods like popcorn, nuts, etc. Keep a journal of what you eat and when you flare up so that you can guage what foods may trigger a flare for you.

I know these diseases are frustrating and you want to find a miracle cure. But it just doesn't exist with diet. If anything, do what you can do to help raise money for research so scientists and doctors can research the disease even more and find a real cure! Best of luck to you and your family as you find the best path for you to deal with UC or Crohn's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life.
After 13 years of severe ulcerative between the ages of 27 and 40 and one near death experience at age 33, I consider myself fortunate to have stumbled across David's wonderful work.

I can only speak for myself and from MY experience with David's work and say that, by fully understanding and implementing David's philosophy and dietary recommendations contained in his book and with immense patience and a fervent desire to heal, I was able within 2 months to completely restore my health (where literally everything else had failed over 13 long, excruciating years). I have been symptom free and free of all medications for over 4 years now (I have not been to a doctor or taken any medication for any ailment in four years).

I owe David Klein an immense debt of gratitude for saving and giving me back my life and I can't recommend this book highly enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Takes advantage of poor IBD sufferers
I have ulcerative colitis and have gone through corticosteroids and other medications that have destroyed my body. After reading the great reviews for this book I decided to give it a try. However, after reading it I felt very sad. The book was entirely too extreme and diminishes one's diet to mostly fruit and some raw vegetables. There are probably only a small handful of people on this earth that could go by this diet and feel anything close to satisfaction regarding what they eat. The diet in this book makes being vegan look overindulgent because the book would not allow soy and nut products or anything that is even a little bit processed. The book also subtly accuses those who can't maintain such an extremist diet that they do not want to get better or are not dedicated enough to fight their disease.I found this to be very cruel because it taunts real people suffering with a horrible disease with a solution that is so unattainable. If all you people writing reviews are actually "real" people and are able to go by this diet, then I admire you so much. I eat a very healthy diet that others would accuse of being mostly "rabbit food." But still I could never come close to the diet in this book. The only positive aspect of this book is that it propelled me to eat more fruits in my diet (which other books of course say is NOT a good thing). Having IBD is tough, because you don't know who to believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vegan diet for ulcerative colitis
This book is great help to induce and prolong remission. It is a very strict diet focusing on raw fruits and vegetables, but it has helped me reduce my meds and taper off the prednisone completely.

5-0 out of 5 stars really worth a read with an open mind, its definitely not a quick fix solution...
Similar to others i struggled with life with ulcerative colitis and was frustrated with the solutions offered by the medical professions (increasingly toxic medications from prednisolone to cyclosporin). I did come across David Kleins work when i was very unwell but was unsuccessful in implementing the advice as i was already very weak and clouded by the disease and its symptoms. I ended up so seriously unwell that surgery seemed to be at the time the only sensible solution. I had a total ileostomy and j pouch constructed. I am now living a much more normal and happy life but have already had episodes of infection/ inflammation that the medics have been unable to understand or diagnose but have prescribed the generic dose of anti biotics. I do not want to be reliant on the medical professions for the rest of my life. Also, I have finally understood that, as well meaning as the medics often are, they do not have the answers or deeper understanding into what is actually causing the disease.

I am now resolved to take better care of my health. Therefore, I have returned to the information on nutrition that i enjoyed reading and learning about when i was trying to help myself when i was unwell with colitis. David Klein's work has been a revelation to me and the solid foundation that i return to when i stray from the path...or go on a skiing holiday to France (a country that i doubt even has a word for vegan!!)

It has taken a time to assimilate the information successfully though. Initially, i was on the one hand willing the information to be the quick solution to all my disease, and on the other hand deeply skeptical and doubted the information.

Having returned to David Klein's work a year later I have had time to digest the information and am more aware of how to implement the advice in a way that suits my needs. It is not an easy quick fix solution, but a whole lifestyle change that requires the support of close family and friends around you.

I would like to thank David Klein for his dedication and generosity in sharing his knowledge and experience in this area. I strongly recommend this book to anyone living with colitis or crohns. Again though i would like to stress that it is not a quick fix solution but requires a lot of care patience and lifestyle change.

I hope others go on to read and benefit from this book ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Thing in a Small Package
This slim volume by co-authors Zonderman (a writer with Crohns Disease) and his gastroenterologist Vender packs a lot of punch in a brief amount of time.Very up to date in terms of medication information and surgery, theauthors also do an excellent job of describing the symptoms of inflammatorybowel disease and WHY you are feeling this way (something I've yet to comeacross in any other book on IBD).I was disappointed in the primitive linedrawings used to illustrate the book and in the negative attitude towardsome alternative medical treatments discussed in the "mind/body"chapter (although I was pleased to see its inclusion). The authors shouldbe commended for approaching the emotional aspects of IBD in a forthrightmanner and the book would be an appropriate addition to any IBD library. ... Product Description
There are many books about illness, but very few writers convey the courage and hope of battling a chronic illness as eloquently as Jim Lang. "Learning Sickness" is the compelling narrative of Jim’s battle with Crohn’s Disease. Diagnosed at the age of 26, Jim spent the next five years coming to terms with how to live with a chronic illness. During that time he fathered two children, earned a Ph.D., accepted his first teaching position, and launched a writing career. Jim Lang provides an absolutely unflinching look at the way the disease can penetrate into every aspect of a person's life: physical, emotional, and spiritual. He tackles the most sensitive areas of the disease with grace and skill, and wraps it all into a gripping narrative of illness and recovery that demonstrates how suffering can produce a special kind of wisdom. This book will help millions of Americans, and countless others around the globe, understand they do not suffer alone, and it will provide friends, families, and colleagues of sufferers with their first real glimpse into the toll the disease can take on their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
I found Lang's book incredibly insightful!!! It brought to my attention various issues I was experiencing and helped me to cope with those issues.Additionally, I found it very beneficial to read an account of another person with Crohn's Disease, it enabled me to connect and discover that there were others who encountered similar experiences that I did. After reading it, I have finally found some joy in my life.I would recommend this book for anyone with Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis who is suffering from depression, feels hopeless and alone, or is dealing with change in their lives due to IBD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I purchased this book after reading a blurb in the local paper about the author speaking at Barnes & Noble.I was unable to attend but ordered it through Amazon. The book sounded like a helpful way to share what a Crohn's patient feels with my spouse/family.As it turns out, the author suffers from Crohn's of the colon only and does not experience the daily pain that 80% of patients do.The major issue for me wasn't even covered! The second problem I had with it was, no offence, it was written from a very male point of view.As a woman, ego & ability to deal with emotional issues are not experienced in the same way as an alpha male type.I think he just needed a Xanax! He does offer an entire chapter about the importance of being your own patient advocate & I think that's definitely an important point to cover when dealing with any chronic medical condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry to disagree...
As a person who has struggled with Crohn's disease for years- I had hoped this book would offer some useful information. Instead, after buying it out of my now very meager income- I got to read some guy's diary about how he felt. It was not useful to me at all- except that it will hold the front door open to let the fresh air in. If you have Crohn's disease or suspect it- I beg you to read Jill Sklar's book or 'Straight from the gut'- both are available on Amazon and both are very, very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for friends and family members of IBD sufferers
For years, myself, my friends, and my family have struggledwith feeling helpless as my physical and mental health fluctuate due to the unpredictable nature of IBD.Jim's book offers the heartfelt insights about coping with chronic disease that I have been either too tired or too afraid to admit to even my closest companions. While this book offers an honest voice I can commiserate with, it is a much needed resource for anyone who wants to understand what it means to be sick with IBD.I cannot recommend this book highly enough for both the sufferer and those who want to learn more.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Crohns patient liked it!
As a 30-year-old who had Crohns for the past 6 years, I was interested in this book. It was well written and sweet. I often had the same feelings the author had about taking the darn pills every day and always feeling sick.
I also liked how he sat in church and prayed to feel better. I also went thru the, "Mad at God" stage b/c I was so sick and blamed him for my illness. It was nice to know that others feel the same way sometimes, and it helped ease a little of my guilt.
Great book for a Crohns or UC patient...or their family and friends... :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Options for Chrohn's Disease
My son has Chron's Disease, he was diagnosed at the age of 12 he is now 18.He had to have resection surgery and I was looking for a book that would let us know what to expect and what other options there could be.I feel this book has been very helpful to us and we will always have it to refer to when we have concerns. For the future if my son has questions I will have this book to give to him, but right now he is just trying to recover from surgery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be aware....
I've just read this book and felt that it was fairly helpful, especially if you have just been diagnosed and are looking for ways to minimize the nasty symptoms of crohn's.

I had one problem with it. I've had crohn's for eighteen years and am something of an expert. Every crohn's sufferer Iknow avoids too much fibre as it acts like glass to our poor inflamed guts. Dr Hunter at Addenbrookes recommends a low fat LOW FIBRE diet as treatment. Whilst pears, apples, cherries, mango, melons and pineapple may be fine, other fruits such as citrus and bananas may cause further problems.

With vegetables, spinach, carrots & sweet potato, should all be fine, but onions, tomatoes, potato skin, and really anything high in fibre should, I believe, be avoided. To ensure adequate nutrition, peel all vegetables, avoid fruit and vegetables with pips and seeds or remove carefully, or try eating in pureed form or as soups.

Finally, if you have very severe crohn's or have had it for any length of time, this may not be the book for you as it deals with the basics and implies that there is a successful treatment for all, which unfortunately, isn't always the case. If you are looking for reassurance and support after a few hard years of recurring disease, this may not help.

However, a good, varied book, written by one who actually has the disease for once.

1-0 out of 5 stars Patronising and light on for real info
I found this book very patronising, just do what you are told and you will get better. Very light on for details of any type.I would recommend Saibil if you just want the mainstream medical info.If you want alternatives to use either with or without maintream medicine try Atkins Vitanutrient Solution (yes the diet guy) or Berkson's Healthy digestion the natural way. They both offer a wide diversity of alternative treatment

1-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and Disappointing
I found this book very disappointing. I have had Crohn's Disease for 17 years and have read all the books on Crohn's Disease. I found this book very disturbing because in many instances, Dr. Gomez claims that when the Crohn's patient "cleaned" up their life, they became well. This not only implies that it is somehow the patients fault for getting ill but also that they can control it. Unfortunately, the disease does not work like that. I feel sorry for the Crohn's patient who reads this book and thinks that all they have to do is take their medication live on the straight and narrow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Medical Information
This book has complete information on the different types of medical treatments for Crohn's Disease. It was helpful to understand the technical side of available treatments, including side effects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Available
This is the most comprehensive yet systematic, accessible, and intelligent book I've read on IBS (I had read 7-8 others before finding this one). You can waste much time and money on all sorts of herbal and medicinal products as well as alternative therapies with absolutely no gain--in fact, in many cases you may decide you feel worse.

Salt and Neimark provide a complete analysis of the mind/body/spirit connection, taking you from the causes of your problem to the resolution of it that only knowledge and action can provide.Their approach employs all of the latest research in mainstream medicine as well as some bold and positive understandings that are unliikely to appear in the conventional literature.

The only slight "negative" may be many of the illustrations, which are frankly insipid and unilluminating. On the other hand, they do provide some "breathing space" for the reader, possibly providing the text with a lighter tone and feel.

Collaboratively written by digestive disorder specialists Dr. William Salt and Dr. Neil Neimark, and now available in a fully revised and updated new edition, Irritable Bowel Syndrome And The MindBodySpirit Connection is an invaluable, hope-giving, practical, non-specialist general reader friendly guide offering seven specific steps to improving one's quality of life and health when living with a functional bowel disorder, Crohn's Disease or colitis. Product Description
Now published in two volumes to accommodate new chapters on the many advances in understanding and treatment options, this set of volumes represents the definitive reference on inflammatory bowel disease, a spectrum of diseases that is receiving increasing attention as our understanding of the etiological factors increases and diagnostic tools are refined. Basic research accelerated at the beginning of this decade and is now yielding new, more targeted treatments than were available just a few years ago.

Volume 1 is on IBD and Ulcerative Colitis, and Volume 2 is on IBD and Crohn’s Disease. All areas that were covered in the 2nd edition have been expanded and updated. New sections include the rapidly expanding knowledge of genetics and the role of the intestinal flora and environmental factors in etiology and pathogenesis. Among the 168 chapters, there are 20 on biologic therapies and 30 on surgical management. The consultant/authors clearly state their approach to important issues, such as the duration of immunomodulator and of anti-TNF use and the options for managing isolated low-grade dysplasia.

A strong focus on the individual patient is woven throughout both volumes, including the benefits and risks of potentially life-altering therapies and surgeries. Product Description
This book is devoted to research on Crohn's disease (also known as regional enteritis) which is a chronic, episodic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is generally classified as an auto-immune disease. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus; as a result, the symptoms of Crohn's disease vary among afflicted individuals. The disease is characterized by areas of inflammation with areas of normal lining between in a symptom known as skip lesions. The main gastrointestinal symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhoea (which may be bloody, though this may not be visible to the naked eye), constipation, vomiting, weight loss or weight gain.Crohn's disease can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, and inflammation of the eye. Although the cause of Crohn's disease is not known, it is believed to be an auto-immune disease that is genetically linked. The highest relative risk occurs in siblings, affecting males and females equally. Smokers are three times more likely to get Crohn's disease. Unlike the other major types of IBD, there is no known drug based or surgical cure for Crohn's disease.Treatment options are restricted to controlling symptoms, putting and keeping the disease in remission and preventing relapse. ... Product Description
This book concentrates on Crohn's disease, but also has chapters on ulcerative colitis, mainly to explain their similarities and the differences between them. Its aim is to help to understand what is happening in the course of IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases), and how modern medicine is used to relieve them and to prevent the serious complications that caused so many tragedies in the past. The book starts by explaining how the normal bowel works. It shows how it can go wrong and how, if it becomes inflamed, it can produce the three main symptoms of diarrhoea, bleeding and mucus production. If they continue, your health deteriorates quickly: the book covers the methods by which doctors can correct them and help you towards recovery. It describes the tests and investigations provided in a modern gastroenterology unit, as the specialist makes the diagnosis and estimates the extent of the illness. It is not just the illness but how much of the bowel is affected that makes the difference in treatment and how quickly and completely recovery is made. Other bowel problems that mimic Crohn's disease are described and there is a section on the possible causes of Crohn's. ... Read more
