Editorial Review

Product Description
A gem among surgical manuals, this comprehensive guide to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is an excellent source for all surgeons looking specifically for technical details about the surgical management of these two diseases. Its authors - both involved in multi-center international trials, working parties and symposia - capture in print the improved techniques that have brought about revolutionary developments in the field. The extremely practical approach makes it easy for surgeons to review the indications for surgical interventions and the surgical options available for each clinical problem. Step-by-step operative instructions with practical tips born of long experience are given. The authors point out what results one should expect following the surgical intervention; these include zero mortality and minimal morbidity. They also list all the steps that should be taken to minimize the risk of late complications or recurrence. The clear instructions in this manual will also be of great value to non-surgical physicians who wish to know the indications for surgical treatment and what results they should expect from their surgical colleagues. ... Product Description
The fact that the differential diagnosis of inflammatory boweldisease includes intestinal infections has been a source of muchinterest and clinical concern for many years. Since the recognition ofulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease as clinical entities, numerousattempts have been made to identify a specific organism resulting inthe clinical and pathologic picture of inflammatory bowel disease.
The isolation, in 1984, of M. paratuberculosis initiated thecurrent interest in and controversy about a mycobacterial etiology inCrohn's disease. The hypothesis that 'Crohn's disease is Johne'sdisease' has led to a number of efforts, world-wide, to determinewhether or not mycobacteria are associated with Crohn's disease. Themost active reserach groups have contributed to this book, describingtheir attempts to unravel the hypothesis, providing the reader with anup-to-date review of knowledge available up to Fall, 1992.
The book is based in part on presentations to the symposium on Crohn'sdisease held during European Digestive Disease Week, Amsterdam, 24October 1992. The contributions have been especially updated forpublication.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb - must have as a patient
I went through the CD-ROM.Although at some places old technology (todays video encodings run faster) it is great! For the first time I understand my disease, what the mechanisms are and why to treat it.There is also a more general section about other intestinal disorders for those who do not have IBD but are interested in intestinal disease.By far the best product in a long time! ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This Crohnie Handbook came into being at the request of several of my friends and family members as I have done a tremendous amount of research on Crohn's disease and they all felt that I had acquired some valuable information about the disease and how to deal with it. Through trial and error, I have learned many different ways to keep my Crohn's under control and because I understand that there is no one exact standard about Crohn's disease treatment, the main purpose of this Handbook is to share a multitude of information with you and provide you with a reference tool that you can use to help you further understand your Crohn's. I also hope to provide some thoughts on how to keep your Crohn's under control with the realization that some suggestions may work and some may not. Your success is going to depend on your individual case, symptoms, environment and condition.

I will use laymen's terms and easy to understand English but I will have to use some technical and medical terms to tie it all together. Any technical or medical term that needs clarification will be defined. Also included are some reference information, medication information, medication side effects, vitamins and supplements, nutritional information, some support organizations and some helpful websites.

Many books have been written about Crohn's disease by those who have only studied or treated it and most books are written by more than one person. But for those of us who live with it from day to day, every day of our entire lives, we know what it is like to be sick by ourselves with no end in sight. This Handbook has been written from that perspective.

Even when I have my Crohn’s somewhat under control, I too endure the long sleepless nights, the pain, agony, suffering, loneliness, public embarrassment, and the fear that those who don't have this disease won’t really understand what we are going through. It is hard to explain that we are sick when we appear to be perfectly healthy.

As I have found in my research of Crohn's disease and other chronic illnesses, most people with Crohn's don't complain too much about being sick, but the sick feeling never goes away. I have also discovered that there are many support groups with many people who suffer greatly from Crohn's and you should make every attempt to become involved with some of these groups. The only way to know more about your disease is to know more about your disease.

Hopefully, this Handbook will assist you to understand Crohn’s disease a little better and help you to cope with and overcome that never-ending sick feeling.

Good luck in your endeavors and may better health and happiness be with you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for the book
I showed up at Mr. Pilkington's home unexpected and he and his wife were very cordial and listened to my cousin's dilemma and her bout with crohns disease. After about an hour of my story, Mr. Pilkington graciously offered me a book and signed it for my cousin.

My cousin has had Mr. Pilkington's book for about 12 weeks. She has been able to eat foods that Mr. Pilkington describes in his book with much success and she is gaining weight and is feeling much better.

Simply put, Mr. Pilkington tolerated my showing up unannounced, listened to my story, gave me a book, signed it and gave me his cell phone number. Then he told me that my cousin could call him anytime to talk about the problems she was dealing with.

Mr. Pilkington's book is very well written and Mr. Pilkington and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. When I showed up unannounced at their home and they took the time to talk to me, it was a true showing that Mr. Pilkington is really concerned about helping people with crohns disease.

I would like to personally thank Mr. Pilkington and his wife for being so cordial and friendly when they did not have to be, and, I would like to thank him for being concerned about my cousins health.

Thank you Mr. Pilkington.I appreciate the time you spent with me and I will recommend you and your book to everyone and anyone that I know that has crohns disease

Product Description

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, whose symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis; it can therefore be difficult to diagnose. Its knowledge and understanding have increased considerably in the last years; new advances in genetics, medical and surgical management offer today new possibilities for patients suffering from an inflammatory bowel disease. However, Crohn's disease remains a difficult disease to deal with, both from a research and clinical point of view.

This book provides general practitioners with a basic knowledge of the disease, offering in the same time an update on new facts about Crohn's disease to specialists. It can also be useful for residents willing to develop a deeper knowledge of inflammatory bowel diseases.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works
Greg Barton's diet works for curing major problems with autoimmune diseases. I've known a number of people who've used his book to cure themselves of problems. I'm only in my late 20s but started having inflammation issues a few years back, as I discovered, because of my diet. My jaw would "lock" up, leaving me in pain and unable to open it fully. With a few days on his diet my jaw opens up and there is no inflammation. Other people who've fruitfully used the book had problems with their digestion and inflammation.

The book is easy - even enjoyable - to read and for the money can't be beat. I fully recommend this book if you want to make a more radical life-changing shift to a healthy, pain-free life. It's also useful if you want a short term fix to problems, such as my joint problems, that aren't chronic but yet flair up and cause immense stress and pain for a short period of time.

Give it a try.
