Product Description
This book provides a comprehensive and unified account of the structure and properties of crystalline binary adducts.Perhaps better known as molecular complexes and compounds, these crystals are currently estimated (from molecular recognition studies) to make up one quarter of the world's crystals, providing evidence for some sort of special attraction between the two components.DNA is perhaps the most famous example but others (hydrates, solvates, host-guest inclusion complexes, donor-acceptor compounds) pervade the whole body of solid state chemistry.Although much research has been published, there has never been a comprehensive and unified treatment of the whole field. This book has been designed to fill this gap, comparing and contrasting the various examples and the different types of interaction (hydrogen bonding, inclusion and localized or delocalized charge transfer). More than 600 figures, 200 tables and 3500 references are included in the book. Since most 'parent compounds' form a number of adducts, the fraction of crystalline binary adducts is only going to grow making this account just the 'tip of the iceberg.' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars thoroughly explained physics of complex phenomena
The book reflects an extensive experimental experience and a deep fundamental understanding ofthe properties of fero- and anti- ferroelectric liquid crystals. It is a widespread story about the fascinating and complex properties of these materials, which was written as a result of many years of successful work of the leading researchers in the field. All the chapters strictly follow the role of combining the explanations of the experimentally observed features with the theoretical description of the associated processes. This not only provides a complete overview to the active researchers in the filed, but also gives quite a rare opportunity to the students and newcomers to learn about complex physical phenomena starting from the first principles. The understanding might be further extended by following the numerous carefully collected references listed at the end of the book. It is nowadays hard to find such a systematic and complete text regarding modern material science, therefore do not miss a chance read it.

Product Description
Paul Ewald's 1916-1917 masterpiece "On the Foundations of Crystal Optics" described the self-consistent interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals on a molecular level. While astonishing in its detailed predictions for X-ray diffraction, full appreciation of the theory and its utility had to await much later advances in measurement techniques and crystal growth. Today, concepts introduced in the theory--now known as the Ewald sphere, Ewald summation, and Ewald-Oseen extinction--have become mainstays in diverse areas of modern physics. This memorial volume, with contributions by leading figures in the field, is an affectionate survey of Ewald's life, scientific work, and leading role in the international crystallographic community. Historians of science, and particularly of solid state physics and crystallography, will find this volume a compelling and fascinating tribute to this important scientist. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is about the new materials now being created in order to fulfil specific scientific needs. This is one of the key fields within the new discipline of Molecular Engineering. The principles governing the structure of solids and their surfaces are described with examples drawn from ionic crystals, molecular crystals, valence crystals and alloys. Although many of the topics are related to Solid State Physics they are here introduced from a chemical rather than a physical point of view in order to open up the subject to a wider audience. The main text tries to remain simple by exploiting fully a modest number of theoretical ideas. An important aim of the text is to bridge the gap between the average chemistry degree course and the rapidly expanding research literature of the subject. ... Read more

Product Description
The art of solving a structure from powder diffraction data has developed rapidly over the last ten years to the point where numerous crystal structures, both organic and inorganic, have been solved directly from powder data. However, it is still an art and, in contrast to its single crystal equivalent, is far from routine. The art lies not only in the correct application of a specific experimental technique or computer program, but also in the selection of the optimal path for the problem at hand. Written and edited by experts active in the field, and covering both the fundamental and applied aspects of structure solution from powder diffraction data, this book guides both novices and experienced practitioners alike through the maze of possibilities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Your expert knowledge is needed
Powder diffraction has been around for decades, as a means of determining (or attempting to determine) crystal structure. However, David shows the many advances in recent years, driven principally by ever more powerful computers.

He describes that going from powder data to a crystal structure is often an underdetermined problem, compared to dealing with single crystal samples. Thus many methods have arisen, that basically take intelligent steps or assumptions, to reduce down the manifold possibilities.

He makes a cogent point that all is not yet automated. There is often still a need for you to make an inspired guess, based on your own expert knowledge, while applying the computational toolsthat have been developed.

The book is well suited for crystallographers, as a good summary of the start of the art. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first book to provide a comprehensive treatment of theories and applications in the rapidly expanding field of the crystallography of modular materials. Molecules are the natural modules from which molecular crystalline stuctures are built. Most inorganic structures, however, are infinite arrays of atoms and some kinds of surrogate modules, e.g. coordination polyhedra, are usually used to describe them. In recent years the attention has been focused on complex modules as the basis for a systematic description of polytypes and homologous/polysomatic series (modular structures). This representation is applied to the modelling of unknown structures and understanding nanoscale defects and intergrowths in materials. The Order/Disorder (OD) theory is fundamental to developing a systematic theory of polytypism, dealing with those structures based on both ordered and disordered stacking of one or more layers. Twinning at both unit-cell and micro-scale, together with disorder, causes many problems, "demons", for computer-based methods of crystal stucture determination. This book develops the theory of twinning with the inclusion of worked examples, converting the "demons" into useful indicators for unravelling crystall strutures. In spite of the increasing use of the concepts of modular crystallography for charaterising, understanding and tailoring technological crystalline materials, this is the first book to offer a unified treatment of the results, which are spread across many different journals and original papers published over the last twenty years. ... Product Description
Liquid Crystals, Laptops and Life connects the laptop computer with life itself via liquid crystals, the phases of matter essential to both. In the process it provides an integrated introduction to those parts of chemistry and physics that are necessary for understanding the basic science and technology embedded in the laptop and in life. This book can be understood by students with a good background in high school chemistry and physics; yet it can also serve as a primer for scientists who are not well versed in the areas covered. The first section of the book is devoted to discussion of basic concepts of chemistry and physics. The second section applies these concepts and extends them to three classes of materials that make the laptop possible: liquid crystals, polymers, and semiconductors. The first two classes of materials relate naturally to the molecules essential to life, thus providing an introduction to this area in an independent chapter. The third section focuses on the applied science and technology of semiconductors, digital devices, and computers, as well as liquid crystal displays. This section concludes by illustrating how these materials and technologies are combined in and make possible the laptop computer. The final section discusses applications of liquid crystals to the arts and to life. Each chapter rounds off with references to more advanced literature, exercises that test the reader's understanding, and open-ended questions that encourage the reader to explore the topics in greater depth. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A COMPACT OVERVIEW OF THE RIETVELD METHOD
Professor Young's must be congratulated for having made a great effort in putting together an up-to-date book on the Rietveld Method. The books gives a rather comprehensive overview of the underlying principles of this veryimportant technique of powder diffraction. It may be quite useful for theuninitiated scientist in this exciting field. Hence, the book should beconsidered an 101 level course in Rietveld Analysis. Although, each chapteris rigorously written and all the chapterarranged in a systematicfashion, the book simply lacks "case studies" in the step by stepapplication of the technique. Therefore, only a 3 star rating given. Mostof the "newcomer" suffer from the lack of guides on how toperform Rietveld refinements and resources in this area is extremelyscarce. To sum up, those who wish to have an idea on what the Rietveldmethod is all about and what it can do for you, this book would mostcertainly be a valuable reference (especially references cited thereinwould come in very handy!). ...
