Editorial Review

Product Description
This study examines the evolution of Cuban literature and culture from its origins in the 19th century to the present. The early sections analyze the relationship between literary production and universities, the printing press, the abolitionist movement and the exile community from 1810 through the post-war years.Subsequent sections trace literary life from the 1920s to 1958, focusing on the links between writers, readers, and the institutions that supported literary endeavors in the Cuban Republic. The remaining chapters address Cuban literary culture from 1959 through the 1990s.
This first thorough study of Cuban print culture after the 1959 revolution fills a large gap in Latin American studies with original research in archives and journals.Analysis of the relationship between literature and contemporary Cuban society is grounded in the earliest Cuban vernacular literature born in the Spanish colony and redefined in the process of nation-building in the first half of the 20th century. The book also surveys Cuban literary production in the current period of transition, confronting issues of globalization, fragmentation, and Cuba's adjustment to a post-Cold War world. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Amnesia not History
Writing History is a mayor and dificult compromise: fact. In writing History personal subjective twisted wishes are useless. Mister Jorge Ibarra tried to look into the very best years of Cuban History -namely the 50's-, through glasses obscured by dogma (307 bibliographical references for a 200 pages work! The whole nomenklature is there: from Marx to Castro et al; none of the most foreing respected works on Cuba are there). The result is a manipulated discourse that even the positive indicators are twisted to become negative ones. Quotation: [in the 50's] "black women moved to jobs in urban industries", p. 131. What is a clear signal that, at least, jobs where being offered, mister Ibarra transforms that fact in a castroist discourse: "These changes in labor situation of black women provide evidence of their decision to escape the servile work traditionally associated with slavery by becoming part of the urban proletariat". For God sake!, how mister Ibarra can demonstrate such a retoric "evidence", except that Cuba was involved in a growing economical process (for the first time in Cuban history foreign investments went over 10% of the NGP, mainly to new industries; and where in the rising), fact that mister Ibarra doesn't see. In the 50's Cuba was one of the Latin American countries with the highest standar of living and the best Social Security. Cuba's balance of trade was positive from 1936 to 1957; a great achivment. Cuba was a democratic society from 1940 to 1952, when Batista broke the Constitutional order, as Castro did in 1959 (S. Schoerder, Cuba. A Handbook of Historical Statistics and José R. Álvarez Díaz et al, in Study on Cuba). What really puzzles the reader is how mister Jorge Ibarra could make it from Havana to Studies in Cuban History in the USA that presides Louis A. Perez jr. It is not a matter of freedom of speach, of course not, not even a matter of "different points of view", it is a matter of respect to academics and respect to the reader. Jorge Ibarra's Prologue to Revolution. Cuba, 1898-1958, is, at least, in the wrong book Section. ... Read more

Product Description
A glitering look at political, literary, cloak-and-dagger and romantic Paris in the 1840's, during the monarchy of Louis Philippe de Orleans. The French are attempting to recover the lost territories of Louisiana through a scheme involving Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who years later (1868) was to become the first President of the Cuban Republic in Arms. As a great admirer of Franklin, Jefferson and Lafayette, Céspedes thwarts these plans, much to the consternation of Francois Guizot, the French Prime Minister. The issues of the day were independence, slavery, the rights of women and voting rights. Some signs of anti-americanism were already evident among French intellectuals, in spite of De Tockeville's Democracy in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Contramaestre
Contramaestre is a work of art.It brings you back to 1840, it walks you through the Paris of that era and more precious of all, it associates you to the mentality of the post revolution in France, the post USA independence and to some extend all the events of that epoque to today Cuba's situation. How Spain acted then, and even today, toward Cuba. It explains so clearly the sacrifice of the Cespedes, the Del Montes, the Aldamas. Beautiful! Thank you Mr. Chao for a work extremely well done.Thank you,

5-0 out of 5 stars falcoff not far off!
This book dispels many of the myths put forth by our Liberal-Left Media(eg> NY Times, WASH Post, CBS, CNN, etc.) Chief among them is that USA was propping up the Battista regime, documents prove that USA wanted Battista gone as much as the Cuban people did. Another myth, that the USA [sic] "drove" Castro into the Soviet orbit. Falcoff showsthis to be media myth-making of the highest order. If you're not skeptical of the Left-Wing media after reading this book, you ought to enroll in logic classes at your local Community College!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing academic look at the Cuban boat people.
The boat people episode in Cuban history deserves more depth than this very dry and hurried academic runthrough. The crossings to freedom were dangerous and many interesting stories appeared in South Florida papers at that time. However this thin dual-language "book" lacks feeling and in it's remoteness the Balseros come off like stick people rather than human beings.
Very disappointing.Do not recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book, but without very many probing questions
As someone who worked with the rafters at the base, I was interested to read the book. It was a bit disappointing. There were so many questions to be asked about their detention at Guantanamo and how that affected theirlife in the US, but the authors seemed to concentrate a lot on current lifein Cuba. The Guantanamo rafters had a totally different experience thanother rafters and I would have liked to see that emphasized more. I alsofound some of the questions to be political rather than academic in nature, which for me took away some of the book's value. What's nice about thebook is that it has two audiences built in - the Spanish version and itsEnglish translation are in the same volume. Overall, it was a nice try atrecording the experience, but it lacks depth. ... Read more

Each of the titles in this series examines a major historical watershed. The authors recount the chain of events leading up to the event and the repercussions, both immediate and long-term. They also evaluate the concept of a turning point, assessing in what way this event qualifies. Differing interpretations are discussed, showing how history is informed by a complicated web of divergent views. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique study of a sector of the Cuban working class links its history to that of the tobacco industry in the wider national and international context. Dr Stubbs, who has lived and worked in Cuba for fifteen years, tells the story of the agricultural and industrial development of the industry from its nineteenth-century beginnings to the establishment of the communist regime. She traces the growth of a strong tobacco oligarchy, peasant grower class and urban salaried work force alongside slave and indentured labour, and examines how a prestigious manufacturing country was transformed into an exporter of leaf. The study penetrates the finer socio-political aspects of the changing nature and composition of peasantry and proletariat, including the peculiar interlacing of race, gender and skill, to take a closer look at hitherto obscure areas of class action and national and class consciousness, be it reformism, anarcho-syndicalism, revolutionary nationalism, socialism or communism. ...
