From the supplier: A politician and an economist discuss their views on the European monetary union. Lord Simon, the British Min for Trade and Competitiveness in Europe, believes that the integration would have significant implications for the UK. He says that although the UK has not immediately joined the currency unification, businesses are already feeling its impact because most companies deal with other organizations with operations in countries that already adopted the euro. The official recounts the initiatives launched by his ministry to help British companies prepare for the euro. Taking a less positive view of the union, Alan Reynolds, the director of Economic Research for the Hudson Institute, observes that critics and supporters of the euro are exaggerating their comments regarding the currency. He notes that the result of the union is merely a large overtaxed, overregulated economy.

Product Description
This report -- prepared for the ECU Institute by a groupof eight economists from universities, private financial institutions, central banks and international institutions, all participating in astrictly private capacity -- is an effort to understand thefactors that determine the international use of currencies, thepresent use of the world's major currencies, and the probableimplications for the International Monetary System of the setting upin Europe of an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) having a singlecurrency (the ECU). The book shows that the EMU will greatly modifythe design of the International Monetary System. By encouraging thedevelopment of a second key international currency that may challengethe dollar, it may transform the current system to a bipolar regime.By introducing a new, big player into the system, it may also increasethe interest of the main participants in international coordination. ... From the supplier: The European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will enter its final stage on Jan 1, 1999 when 11 of the 15 members of European Union adopt a common currency, the euro. The region's monetary integration will have significant implications for the IMF's work and procedures, including the regular monitoring of the member countries' economic policies and developments, which the Fund is mandated to do under Article IV, Sec 3 of its Articles of Agreement. The introduction of the EMU will require the IMF to make further adaptation of the IMF's surveillance of euro area economies. Regular discussions with individual euro area members will remain a central element of the IMF's international economic policy monitoring.

From the supplier: Ensuring financial stability within the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will be challenging in the early years. This is partly because of several aspects of EMU that might increase the potential for systemic events, including the possibility that the Trans-European Automated Real-Time Gross Settlement Express Transfer System will be used less extensively than expected. Another is the possibility that the risk of contagion could increase due to the growth of cross-border unsecured interbank lending. An important issue that needs to be addressed is whether national central banks will be able to adequately evaluate the risk of contagion and whether the national central banks of troubled financial institutions will be quickly identified. The European Central Bank may eventually be compelled to assume a leading and coordinating role in crisis management and banking supervision.
