1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
Claims to be a practical guide but is padded out with useless chapters on history and economics. The chapters on practical topics come very late in the book and are by comparision very short and deficient in explanations. Almost no coverage of operational topics, so "practical" only in the front office sense and I have found better material for free on google.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one FX book to grab when you need to know it all!
After reading almost 50 books on the Forex Market and trading the markets live for a few years, I decided that Ms. Taylor's Mastering Foreign Exchange and Currency Options: A Practical Guide to the New Marketplace is the one Forex Book I would take with me if forced to select one. Why? Because it is the only book to somehow comprehensively cover topics as diverse as Currenex, the application of Technical Analysis to FX, Buy Side vs. Sell Side FX Dealer dynamics, Corporate Treasury Hedging, and of course a fairly essential history of both the economics of foreign exchange and the fundamentals relevant to trading it. The book is only 380 pages and most certainly does meet the needs of entry level traders. Intermediate traders or professionals will certainly find topics coveredwhich prompt an occasional:" I didn't know that !". Again, Ms. Taylor has given us the essentials of both the theoretical dimensions of Foreign Exchange pricing both Spot, Futures, and Options AND the nitty, gritty incidentals of how the technology works to make the market happen. What most books on Forex fail to do - this bookdoes achieve. Few Forex primers squarely place Spot Forex into the Inter-Bank context where it belongs. Few books adequately integrate information about Corporate Treasury concerns with the nature of Central Bank Intervention. Trading Forex on the Retail level without understanding CLS or the Flow Information available through Currenex is like Racing Nascar without knowing how to change a tire. Ms. Taylor's book achieves this through the gift of being able to simplify, coordinate, and render the essential of a topic without loss of rigor or information. Usually books achieving this are a dense read, but this book is not - and that is the work of a great teacher.

3-0 out of 5 stars An ok book but not for the beginner

This book has a well written chapter on the economics of foreign exchange. This books' chapters on e-foreign exchange and innovations in e-fx are rather useless for the beginner and also outdated.

The chapters on technical analysis and the individual trainer are short and to the point. It's good information but not enough 'meat' to assist the individual to make better trades. More or the same information can be found in other books that also explain in more details.

There are several chapters that are mainly written for large institutional traders which I didnt find very useful other than getting a 'birds-eye' view from their position.

In my opinion, this book is more for intermediate traders but I wouldn't recommend it to beginners. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it just me, or is this book full of errors?
Haven't gotten through the first two chapters yet and I've noticed three big errors that I'm either completely wrong about or someone didn't edit:

1) Page 2, he talks about handling a billion Pound short sell yet in the fifth paragraph he says "We knew the pressure of selling 1 million cable was going to cause a sharp drop in the price of the Pound Sterling."

2) On page 9 he talks about how to use a stop order, and he uses the example of how you can use it to buy EUR/USD at 135.60 and he says verbatim "To exit the trade, you should it trade down 135.30." Now, I'm no Forex wiz, but we can all safely say that if EUR/USD ever went to 135.30 the world economy would collapse instantly. He may just be joking here, but the careless typing combined with the ridiculous example leads me to believe this is either a poorly edited or poorly written book.

3) On page 16 he talks about swing highs and swing lows and he says to look at the months of April and October using the previous graph, but the graph only runs from June to March and the month of April is not included.

I could finish the book and write the review then but honestly seeing these 3 errors so far has got me worried about using this text as an instructional basis for a trading endeavor I could lose all of my money in. I might put it on the shelf (or in the dustbin) and use a book from the "For Dummies" series instead, as I'm sure those are read by way more people and therefore is bound to be proof-read more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems like a good book but.........
I found the first 20 pages of this book very encouraging.Unfortunately between pp 22 and 26 the book falters as the author contradicts his own trading rules. The 2nd short entry discussed on pp 23 should have been exited at the higher swing low made at the end of Oct (the same reason the first trade was exited). However for unknown reasons the trade continues on for some time and a 'great' profit is taken.Oddly enough, the author even confirms this is a higher low when he discusses pennants on pp 26.Such a significant oversight so early on does not inspire confidence in the authors methods, I probably will not continue reading this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid work, nicely done
Mr. Smith seems to have been trading and writing books for decades, and in this book his considerable experience is distilled into a cohesive work. This book is geared toward long term traders, carry trades, institutional styles of trading. Would definitely recommend to an experienced trader, a very solid work, nicely done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect text book for an already good trader
I teach forex trading to an already well trained group of traders. We are accomplished technical traders and this is a fabulous text book to learn old school technical/bank style trading. Best I have found. Very solid stuff, and best of all it works.
You could actually make a living for life trading Courtneys methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Serious Forex Trading
I've read quite a few books since I've decided to decipher the egnima of Forex. This book is well written and covers some very interesting topics. The stratagies it teaches and some of the perspectives it offer are some of the most useful and luid I have come across.
A definate on your reading list!! ... Read more

Product Description
Financial transactions taxes are in force in all the major developed countries except the USA and Canada. Typically the tax is 0.25 per cent or less, paid whenever stocks and shares or bonds, etc. change hands. The tax originally proposed by Tobin would be a new tax applicable to all international transactions in which currency is exhanged. A similar tax in North America could bring in billions of dollars, even if the tax were as low as 0.1 per cent. In Good Taxes, Alex Michalos puts forth the argument in favour of a financial transactions tax. He looks at the tax as being a benefit to the countries that collect it, as well as a possible solution to such problems as world poverty and the underfunding of the United Nations. Good Taxes provides a thorough analysis of the debate over the proposed tax. Michalos traces the development of the debate back to the proposed Tobin Tax, then details the arguments for and against the implementation of a financial transactions tax. The conclusion is one that is sure to have an impact in North American financial circles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place To Start Building A Solid Forex Foundation
This is the best book I have read since beginning my Forex educational journey two years ago. James Chen tackles many different areas related to trading the FX and sets them fourth in an easily understandable manner. I came away from the book with a much broader understanding of what it takes to be a successful trader in the Spot Forex market and can not wait to get my hands on his next book, Essentials of Technical Analysis for Financial Markets.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good beginner book - YOU WILL NEED MORE HELP
I read through this book at the request of a friend who is beginning to trade Forex. Since I have been doing it for a long time, I was glad to help.

This book can easily be reviewed in a few lines.

If you are completely new to Forex and basic trading, this will give you a VERY general, basic and at times vague whole picture of trading in the Forex world. After you have read this book, you will be left scratching your head saying - Well, that was dandy...but what do I do now? So, yes, you will need to spend more money on further resources to expand upon what is mention here. The deepest, most important topics average 1 to 3 pages spent on them.

Trading is not something that comes easily or quickly. There is no ONE single source that will cover everything. No one should expect that or complain that they did not get it.

You have 2 options with this book -
You can skip it and utilize the internet. There are great sites and free resources. But how long will it take you to gather all of that up and sort it out? First stop - Google babypips.

If you are more inclined to sit by the fireplace and read, then this is the book for you considering it is only $26 here. It does cover all the important bases to give you the whole, BUT NOT IN DEPTH, picture.

If you have read a beginner's book, are familiar with Forex or trading...SKIP THIS BOOK. It can offer nothing to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help!
Got into currency trading a few months ago and just finished reading this book. Its been a big help in getting me up and running. Has pretty much all you need to understand the forex market and become more comfortable trading. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forex Essentials
I ordered this book from Amazon shortly after it came out last year along with a couple other books on trading. Since then, I've also sent it as a gift to some of my friends who were struggling with the often frustrating currency markets. I never got around to writing a review on this book until now, but after having read through it at least twice in its entirety I can say that it has helped me tremendously in understanding how forex works and has made me more comfortable with allocating some of my money to trading forex. While most of my money is still in futures and commodities, most notably gold, my activity in currencies has increased a lot. This book has been a great help in getting me comfortable with the forex market and its trading methods.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginner
The book is a solid base for an introduction to forex trading but thats where it stops. There are no real good foundations for solid strategy trading which is what most novice traders look for, after all we just want to make some good returns! If you are looking for good detailed strategies this is not the book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quarters Theory; An indispensible roadmap for Forex Traders
Ilian Yotov's Quarters Theory is an indispensible roadmap for successfully navigating the seemingly erratic moves and random chaos of the foreign exchange currency market. The Quarters Theory is an unmatched trading methodology that is literally unavailable anywhere else.

Ilian's years of expertise and insight has resulted in a guidebook which demonstrates the outwardly-unpredictable market does move in hidden but clearly predictable ways. The Quarter's Theory teachings provide the tools and skills that allow a trader to be alert to a series of distinct and favorable conditions before making any serious moves, thereby assuring the highest probability for success in what is otherwise a Wild West crap shoot.

My sincere appreciation and gratitude go to Ilian Yotov for his tremendous effort and truly insightful success in finding observable order amidst the chaos. The Quarters Theory is a compass, barometer and survival kit for any forex trader who wants to know, understand and trade with confidence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has anybody made any serious money with this method
I've read this book and the theory sounds plausible BUT has anybody (including the author) made money - serious money - using this method? It's all well to come out with great ideas (and there are many in the forex trading considering the number of titles in this category) only A VERY FEW of them yield solid results. So please, if you generate big moola, give this book 5 stars and spread the word.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly revolutionary way of trading the Forex market. 5 star rating by 4rexacto.com

Product Description
Exchange rates have been central to the course of economic development in Latin America from the heyday of import substitution to the rapid expansion of foreign debt in the 1970s, and from the debt crisis and its troubled aftermath to renewed growth and borrowing in the 1990s.

Why do governments choose the currency policies they do, and how do economic and political factors affect these policies? Although currency policy is made by governments operating in a political environment, there has been little study of the political economy of exchange rate policy. The Currency Game looks to fill this void by examining the range of potential determinants of currency choices by Latin American governments. While purely economic factors—especially economic structure, trade patterns, and exogenous economic conditions—are of course important to these choices, the book focuses on the political and political economy considerations that have typically been underrepresented in the literature. These include the effects of interest groups, electoral competition, and the timing of elections on exchange rate decisions.

Since exchange regimes are adopted for reasons as diverse as inflation control, reduced volatility and improved competitiveness, the book also features a cross-country analysis of national exchange rate policies, as well as case studies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru. ...
