In today's fast-changing global marketplace, many managers are not aware of the extent of their foreign exposure. Even a domestic business, operating entirely in its own currency, can be affected seriously by currency price moves that favor overseas competition. Foreign Exchange Handbook helps managers face the challenges posed by foreign currency exposure. Designed to meet an especially broad array of management needs, the book's topics range from the basic of identifying foreign exchange risk to the more sophisticated techniques used to implement hedging policy. In addition, it is organized in such a way that readers can pick and choose the topics that concern them, depending on their backgrounds and current needs, or read the entire book for a comprehensive overview of the subject. ... Excerpt: Findhorn Ecovillage is an experimental architectural community project based at The Park, in Moray, Scotland, near the village of Findhorn. The project's main aim is to demonstrate a sustainable development in environmental, social, and economic terms. Work began in the early 1980s under the auspices of the Findhorn Foundation but now includes a wide diversity of organisations and activities. Numerous different ecological techniques are in use, and the project has won a variety of awards, including the UN-Habitat Best Practice Designation in 1998. A recent independent study concludes that the residents have the lowest ecological footprint of any community measured so far in the industrialised world and is also half of the UK average. Excerpt: OAO Gazprom (English: , Russian: Otkrytoye aktsionernoye obshchestvo "Gazprom") is the largest extractor of natural gas in the world and the largest Russian company. Gazprom was created in 1989 when the Ministry of Gas Industry of the Soviet Union transformed itself into a corporation, keeping all its assets intact. The company was later privatized in part, but currently the Russian government holds a controlling stake. In 2008, the company produced 549.7 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas, amounting to 17% of the worldwide gas production. In addition, the company produced 32 million tons of oil and 10.9 million tons of gas condensate. Gazprom's activities accounted for 10% of Russia's gross domestic product in 2008. The major part of Gazprom's production fields are located around the Gulf of Ob in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in Western Siberia, while the Yamal Peninsula is expected to become the company's main gas producing region in the future. Description:
Mundell's conjecture in 1963 that the demand for money could depend on the exchange rate in addition to income and interest rate has received some attention in the literature by including the official exchange rate and estimating the money demand in a few developed countries. In less developed countries, since there is a black market for foreign exchange, it has been suggested that the black market exchange rate rather than the official rate should be the determinant of the demand for money in LDCs. This proposition is tested by estimating the demand for money for 25 LDCs using the bounds testing approach to cointegration. The main conclusion is that while in some LDCs, the black market rate enters into the formulation of the demand for money, in some others the official rate is the determinant. The black market premium also played a role in some countries. ... Read more

Description:
To investigate to what extent transaction mechanism matters, we examine the daily returns of 29 foreign exchange rates in the New York market. This paper finds that the day-of-the-week effect existed in the 1980s for some, not all, currencies. The fact that the day-of-the-week effect existed for only some currencies suggests that the US transaction mechanism alone cannot explain the anomaly. Furthermore, this paper finds that the day-of-the-week effect disappears for almost all currencies in the 1990s. This latter result is consistent with previous studies on anomalies in the stock markets. ... Read more

Description:
The new information and knowledge society envisaged for the EU can only benefit from the rich cognitive and aesthetic environment offered by the literatures of Europe. The importance of advancing an economic rationale lies not only in changed economic circumstances but in the necessity to avoid the marginalisation of literature, and cultural policy more generally, in the EU through a combination of misguided market pragmatism and self-congratulatory aesthetic sanctimoniousness. The place of translation in the marketplace warns of the threats of clonialism. Thus, for Europe, the promotion of distinctness as a form of relatedness can function as a viable alternative to the clonialist regime of autistic self-replication. The author concludes these arguments by reminding the reader that among other things, literature is an enormous cultural industry for the present Europe. ... Read more
