Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement that began as a loose association of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence in the 1870s and 1880s. The name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satiric review published in Le Charivari. Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. The emergence of Impressionism in the visual arts was soon followed by analogous movements in other media which became known as Impressionist music and Impressionist literature. Impressionism also describes art created in this style, but outside of the late 19th century time period. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

Providing an overall interpretation of the Buddhist monument Borobudur in Indonesia, this book looks at Mahayana Buddhist religious ideas and practices that could have informed Borobudur, including both the narrative reliefs and the Buddha images.

The author explores a version of the classical Mahayana that foregrounds the importance of the visual in relation to Buddhist philosophy, meditation, devotion, and ritual. The book goes on to show that the architects of Borobudur designed a visual world in which the Buddha appeared in a variety of forms and could be interpreted in three ways: by realizing the true nature of his teaching, through visionary experience, and by encountering his numinous presence in images.

Furthermore, the book analyses a particularly comprehensive and programmatic expression of Mahayana Buddhist visual culture so as to enrich the theoretical discussion of the monument. It argues that the relief panels of Borobudur do not passively illustrate, but rather creatively "picture" selected passages from texts. Presenting new material, the book contributes immensely to a new and better understanding of the significance of the Borobudur for the field of Buddhist and Religious Studies.

Product Description

Caught by Politics recalls the exile of German and European visual artists and film practitioners in the United States. The book traces the paths and aesthetic strategies of Hitler exiles in the United States as ones of productive encounters and ironic cultural masquerades. While stressing creative transformations and performative self-reinventions, the accounts don't ignore the hardship of forced displacement. Caught by Politics encourages the reader to revise dominant and one-sided understandings of modernist culture and instead to engage with the various cross-cultural dialogues between European and American artists. Whether discovering the work of visual artists such as Max Beckmann and George Grosz, of designers such as Jakob Detlef Peters, or of directors and popular film practitioners such as Hans Richter, Edgar Ulmer and Peter Lorre, all authors understand their object of study not in isolation from other media of expression, but as part of the effervescent circulation of images typical for modern industrial society.

Product Description

Art used to be an engagement between the artist and materials, but now as art practices and mediums have changed, these materials have also changed. Where art used to talk of the aesthetics of disappearance, it must now confront the disappearance of the aesthetic. In the twenty-first century, the new battleground is art as light versus art as matter. In this work, author Paul Virilio argues that this change reflects how speed and politics have been transformed to speed and mass culture.
