4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the cultures of the Czechoslovak region
"Czechoslovak Culture" is an excellent book on the cultures of the Czechosovak region.Czechoslovakia has become the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The region is home to several ethnic cultures, such as; Bohemian, Czech, Moravian, Slovak, and some Carpathian-Rusyn people. Thus, it is impossible to please everyone. However is is the current best source of cultural information on these peoples. The book gives some history, some cultural aspects (dance, arts, clothing/costumes, etcetera). It, also gives, about a hundred food recipes. There are many photos, equally split between black and white and color, as well as drawings of artistic articles and patterns and designs from the various cultures.

I recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Things I never knew..
My ancestry includes Bohemian and there are a plethora of items that cite Czech roots and only a few which cite Bohemian roots. Even Moravian items are more plentiful than Bohemian. This book is very informative, but, I do wish that there were more items citing Bohemian origins.

1-0 out of 5 stars only for america
I actually thought that this would be nicer, richer and more colorful book. It is interesting only for czechs in america and then only for some states. Personaly, I am not interested how czechs are doing in america, but I was hoping for more recipes, pictures, customs of czech culture.

Did not like it :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes, Crafts, and Culture
This outstanding book covers Czechoslovaks in many states with facts and stories including Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Kansas, Ohio, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Published prior to the 1993 independence and naming of the Czech and Slovak Republics, this book includes the common history, culture and traditions which united them in numerous ways.

Crafts are stressed. There are how-to-do-it sections. In addition to kraslice (egg decorating), there is an article, by Anna Petrik of Caldwell, Kansas, on how to make bread dolls and an article on how to make corn husk dolls. The bread sculptures and Christmas cookies of Lester Sykora of the Czech Village, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are shown.

Marj Nejdl is featured with the kraslice (painted eggs) and her lovely drawings. She is a distinguished Cedar Rapids folk artist. Kraslice artists also include Kepka Belton, Kansas; Zora DuVall, Illinois; Wash Hornick, Tennessee; and Sidonka Wadina-Lee, Wisconsin. Instructions for decorating eggs are in the book.

The Bily Clocks of Spillville, Iowa are featured in an article by John Zug who visited the brothers Bily on their farm in 1932 to see their woodcarvings. Spillville's St. Wenceslaus church is shown.

Special articles cover the great Midwest including the Czechs who settled on the Cherokee Run in Kansas and Oklahoma. A chapter covers Texas Czechs.

The Slovaks of Pennsylvania and the Cleveland Czechoslovaks are noted in an extensive article.

There are approximately 100 recipes from contributors from Czechoslovak areas and most of the recipes are not in our previous titles:The Czech Book and Czechoslovak Wit and Wisdom.

Pat Martin, author, served for many years as coordinator for the Czech Village Association festivals and events in Cedar Rapids. ... Read more

Market Definition

Foodservice is defined as the sale of food and drinks for immediate consumption either on the premises from which they were bought, or in designated eating areas shared with other foodservice operators, or in the case of takeaways transactions, freshly prepared food for immediate consumption.

Datamonitor's definition excludes sales through vending machines and is restricted to sales in specific foodservice channels (please see channel definitions below).

Various channels have been grouped together in what is called the Cost sector - this sector is characterised by the fact that a subsidy is paid (either directly or indirectly) to one of the actors involved in the transaction, or where the final consumer pays for the food at its actual cost (as opposed to a price that adds some margin to its basic cost).

The cost sector includes the following channels - workplace locations, education locations, hospitals and welfare & services locations.

All sector values are given in Operator Buying Prices, that is the amount spent by foodservice operators on the food and drink that they serve and not the amount the consumers spend on food and drinks (Operator Selling Prices - OSPs) in these channels.

The difference is the mark up the foodservice operator adds in order to cover their other costs and generate a profit. This therefore values the sector in terms of the amount of money for which food and drinks manufacturers are competing.

Sector volumes are classed as the total number of visits by individuals to foodservice locations that involve the consumption of either food, or drink, or both. As such, if several people visit one location at once and there is only one bill (e.g. a group dining in a restaurant), the number of transactions is counted as being one for each person in the group.

Multiple purchases made during the same visit (e.g. a person buys several drinks bought over a period of time in a bar) are counted as one transaction. The purchase of drink with food in the same location in the same visit is also considered as one transaction, not two.

The sector is broken down in to four segments: Workplace; Education; Hospitals; and Welfare & Services.

For the purpose of this report Europe is deemed to comprise of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom. ...

All industry values are given in Operator Buying Prices, that is the amount spent by foodservice operators on the food and drink that they serve and not the amount the consumers spend on food and drinks (Operator Selling Prices - OSPs) in these channels.

The difference is the mark up the foodservice operator adds in order to cover their other costs and generate a profit. This therefore values the industry in terms of the amount of money for which food and drinks manufacturers are competing.

The industry is broken down in to four segments: Cafes & Restaurants, Fastfood, Cost and Other. Cafes & Restaurants includes Cafes, Pubs & Bars, Full ServiceRestaurants, Hotels and Retail locations; Fastfood includes Quick Service Restaurants, Takeaways, Street Vendors and Leisure Locations (cinemas, theatres etc.);

Other includes Nightclubs and sales on-board boats, planes, trains or coaches; the Cost segment is characterised by the fact that a subsidy is paid (either directly or indirectly) to one of the actors involved in the transaction, or where the final consumer pays for the food at its actual cost (as opposed to a price that adds some margin to its basic cost).

The cost sector includes the following channels - workplace locations, education locations, hospitals and welfare & services locations. Industry volumes are classed as the total number of visits by individuals to foodservice locations that involve the consumption of either food, or drink, or both.

All currency conversions have been calculated at 2008 annual average exchange rates.

For the purpose of this report Europe is deemed to comprise of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom. ... Read more
