It is a public not-for-profit facility which promotes public education in Irish traditional music through its own activities and its support for the activities of others. Established in 1987, the Archive is the first body to be exclusively concerned with the making of a comprehensive collection of materials - sound recordings, books, photographs, videos, etc. - for the appreciation and study of Irish traditional music. It now holds the largest such collection in existence, with coverage of the island of Ireland, of areas of Irish settlement abroad (especially in Britain, North America and Australia), and of non-Irish performers of Irish traditional music. BAND BACKGROUND For over five years - from July, 1978 through September, 1983 - Kim Newport and her band toured the ballroom, dance club, and cabaret circuit across Ireland. During that time, Kim appeared on the Irish national television network (RTE) a total of ten times, including two appearances on Ireland's top rated Late Late Show with, then host, Gay Byrne. She also released nine singles, and played live dates in every county in Ireland. Today, Kim and Gerry live in South Carolina. Click here to catch up on what they're doing today. Kim arrived in Ireland in July, 1978. She and husband Gerry had met and performed together in California for the previous year. Gerry had come to Ireland several months earlier to bring together and rehearse the band, as well as set up a home for the couple in Sligo. A native Californian, this was Kim's first home outside the "Golden State." Gerry had lived and work lived in Sligo from 1970 to 1976 and played in local pub groups including Aquarius Feedback and Sundown , as well as a stint with the original
