    Extractions: Pere Ubu formed from the ashes of Rocket From The Tombs, a little-known Cleveland avant-garage band led by vocalist David Thomas and guitarist Peter Laughner. The two, intent on preserving a couple of RFTT songs, convened a handful of fellow rock and roll misfits to record a single. That session yielded "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" and "Heart of Darkness," perhaps the greatest single made anywhere in the USA during the '70s. Suitably heartened, the band soldiered on through innumerable line-ups (Thomas leads the band today; Laughner died as a consequence of excessive personal habits a couple years after the band began), periodic break-ups, and myriad stylistic changes. Geffen , Released ; Reissue The Modern Dance changed the way I heard music when I first taped it off a friend in 1981; 17 years and three or four copies down the road it still sounds fantastic. Back then it was a bracing shock to the central nervous system, the sound of music flying in a dozen different directions at once and yet cohering into a powerful, singularly evocative expression of possibility and perspective.

    Extractions: TANEC PRAHA 2002 is organised by Tanec Praha civic association in co-operation with the City of Prague, Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL PRAGUE SPRING. Already for the fourteenth year, Prague will come alive with dance at the beginning of summer. Tanec Praha has become a tradition and essentially belongs not only to the life of the capital city, but also to that in Brno and Hradec Králové. The Czechs saw the greatest celebrities of the dance modernism, ensembles and also a number of exceptional individualities during the years, the pure dance beside the dance theatre, dance in a dialogue with the other types of art, in a dialogue with the audience, in a dialogue with times. The modern dance has also found its place in the Czech lands for good. It gained its own Tabernacle after endless efforts, the Ponec Theatre. During its first season, it enabled such a number of premieres that it was necessary to distinctly extend the Czech Dance Platform (April 19 - 25, 2002), the programme of which will become a part of the Tanec Praha catalogue. The dance gets out of other boarders. It is to be seen in other theatres, too: Alfred ve dvoøe and the Archa Theatre. It closely communicates with the world of music, and so for the first time the Tanec Praha festival opens this year together with the Prague Spring festival. Dance beyond borders is the motto of this year. The success of Tanec Praha in the European Union programme "Culture 2000" proved that the quality deserved an international respect.
