Extractions: American Folks Dancing has two great ancestors, one English and one French. The subtle contribution of the French ancestors we shall discuss a little later. The English ancestor was a strong, mysterious stranger, but deeply our own, gathering into itself elements from all the ritual lore of the ages, and giving out from itself a vast treasure of figures, feelings, music and attitudes. This English ancestor was the great Morris Dance . It must already have been very old in 1450 when we start our story. No one seems to be perfectly sure whether it preceded the Country Dance that seems to have grown out of it, or whether they grew up more or less side by side. For the purpose of simplicity, let us assume that the Morris Dance was the immediate parent of the Country Dance. It was a professional dance in a sense, as are our "Exhibition dances" that are done by amateurs at festival and conventions. It was not done by just anyone who felt like dancing, but by trained teams who called themselves "Morris Men", and it was done with great gravity, for it went back to a time when the coming of spring was a thing so yearned for that it must be "danced" into being by the beating feet of the children of men. It went back to a time when winter was a spectre of dread after a lean harvest, and sacrifice (sometimes wheaten, sometimes animal, sometimes even human) was necessary in order to propitiate the gods of growing green. And some of which defy description. The following is a list of those sides, with a brief description usually taken from the sides published programme and contact numbers. If any side would like their description altered please let me know This page is maintained by Pete Thomas and was last updated on the 6 th February 2003 Bishop Gundulfs Bishop Gundulfs are based in Rochester and have a Ladies side who dance North-West Morris with garlands, sticks and slings. The mens side dance English Longsword with its complicated figures full of ancient symbolism. The Lock, made of interlaced swords held aloft is particularly striking. A Childrens Side dances country dance and longsword mainly at summer fetes and local festivals, adding to the splendid spectacle of colour. Bishop Gundulfs dance from April to September and on other traditional dates as they occur. The rest of the year is spent in practice at the Medway Arts Centre on Tuesdays from 8pm to 10pm. Maudlin' old man that I am I have, with considerable guilt, largely got over the death of my dog, Bruno. In this I have been considerably aided by a most handsome but feckless young scallywag called Ricky, an Alsatian-Border Collie cross who was picked up lurking with intent on the streets of Liverpool and ended up at a rescue kennels at Colton, near Rugeley in Staffordshire. Loton Park Festival of Border Minstrels, Sunday 6 th October 21002 For various reasons my Market Drayton Folk Festival is no more. However, it has been reincarnated in the rather more grand surroundings of Loton Park, a large country estate- house 7 miles west of Shrewsbury, in the village of Alberbury. Loton Park is the ancestral home of Sir Michael Leighton. It is set in several thousand acres and comes complete with a walled deer park in which, to the consternation of the deer, there is a hill climb frequented by motor sport enthusiasts several weekends a year. In the groundsof the house there is a splendid Rose Terrace with long views over Shropshire, and numerous romantic nooks, woods, a lake, tunnels and an ice house, amongst other features.
