Extractions: As with any other specialized activity, there is a vocabulary of Morris terms to describe various aspects of the dancing. ale - a gathering of dancers. These are usually non-competetive, although teams generally want to show off their best dances. So named after the official beverage at these gatherings. caller - the person, generally at the front left of the set, who calls out the figures of the dance. chorus - the part of each dance which distinguishes it from others in the same tradition. Generally, a dance is either a set dance, in which all dancers do the chorus together, or a corner dance, in which two dancers at a time, the two sets of diagonal corners and then the pair in the middle, dance the steps. The choruses alternate with the figures, q.v. figure - a set of patterned steps which the whole set does together. Each tradition has its own set of figures (there is considerable overlap between traditions), which are generally the same in all of the dances of that tradition. jig - a dance for one or two dancers.

We perform Cotswold Morris Dances, (some more traditional than others!), to music provided by melodeon, concertina, fiddle or pipe and tabor. Our current active membership is around two dozen (including more than half-a-dozen youngsters, mainly children of adult members, who are our second generation!). We also have a cantankerous horse, called (funnily enough) Horse , who now has his own Web Page and e-mail address for fanmail! We are always delighted to welcome prospective new members, either dancers or musicians. No previous experience is necessary, but the best time for newcomers to investigate us, or start dancing is around October. This is because our practice season runs largely from the end of September to mid April. We dance throughout the year, but our busiest season for dancing out is between May and July. Morris’ choreography seems to grow organically out of his musical choices and is always impeccably tuned to both the broad sweep and the detailed phrasings and tones of the accompanying compositions. "Accompanying" is an almost dangerous word here, because both of these pieces of music are exquisite settings of text to voice with instrumental accompaniment, in themselves works of complexity and great beauty. In the Brahms, four voices, in a variety of solos and combinations, are accompanied by four hands at the piano. The Handel, too, has four voices plus a chorus and orchestra.

Although it is primarily used to describe Cotswold style dances, Morris also includes sword dances (primarily from the northern regions of England) and Border dances (from the Welsh-English border). The Morisco was a Spanish name for a Moor or Moorish (Africa) or Spanish Muslim (Spain), who after the country was re-conquered after the legendary Charlemagne and Tamer lane battle ( Christian Re-conquest 11-15th. Century ) remained there and became Christian ( Moorish period ). The Moors who had become subjects of Christian kings as the re-conquest progressed to the fifteenth Centuries were called The Morris dance ( Tripudium Mauritanicum ) was the most frequently mentioned of all the dances of the fifteenth century. In Renaissance writings it is almost always mentioned that a Mouresca, Morisque or Moresque ( Arab Lambra ), was danced and was said to be brought to England from Spain by John of Gaunt (1340-1389) during the reign of his father, Edward III (1312-1377) around 1360 A.D. In the beginning, the Morris dance was a pantomime of war, depicting the struggle of the Moors and Christianity and is one of the oldest English dances to date. Although Helier Morris are an all male side, the Jersey Lilies are an all ladies dancing side who are also interested in new members, we will happily pass on your enquiry. Morris dancing is an English Tradition, and it can only stay alive if people still dance. The chronology is now up and running. The key points are as follows. Harry Kitchener at the Anne Port Bay Folk Club, formed the Helier Morris Men, in 1975 and we first danced out in that same year. We took part in the Battle of Flowers which is a well know event here in the Channel Islands ("the Battle" as its known locally), dancing at intervals up and down the parade. In 1976 we had our first Ale (for those of you who know little about Morris, an ale is where we get together and dance with other Morris sides, sing songs and generally enjoy ourselves). We invited the Wessex Morris Men, who feature a lot in ours and in a lot of side's history. At Christmas we performed our first Mummers Play (again for those of you that know little about Morris, a Mummers play is just that, a short act usually based around the concept of death and resurrection). 1980 saw us no longer able to practice at Howard Davis Farm, as the barn we used during the winter months was converted into Science labs.
