A team of scientists from three U.S. universities has taught a legless virtual android named Adonis to dance the "macarena" as the first step of a project designed to get robots to learn by imitation, the New Scientist reported last week. For an interminable period during the mid-1990s, the craze inspired by the hit song "Macarena" hypnotized entire nations and paralyzed minds of millions with a herky-jerky dance step that makes humans look like ludicrous robots. The one-hit-wonder band that took credit for the song released numerous versions and improvised a handful of different dance routines to go along with it. Adonis the Android learned only the simplest routine involving 12 sets of upper body movements. According to the team, composed of researchers from University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Georgia Tech Univeristy in Atlanta, and Brandeis University in Massachussetts, the macarena is a perfect start for a their artificial intelligence and learning program because the dance consists of distinct motions that can be readily broken down into parts. The scientists are hoping to use the basic behavior set Adonis gains from learning the macarena to build a more complex learning system based on imitation a learning technique humans and animals commonly use but one that has so far stymied researchers trying to translate it to robots. Adonis' head, neck and arms are programmed to function the same as those of human beings. Factored into the program are earthly constraints like gravity and inertia.

Even a casual observer at a recital cannot help but notice how active much of a pianist's body is during a convincing performance.     Extractions: ow do I teach dance rhythms to early-level students? I don't! At least not directly. Please read on. Several years ago, I quit teaching counting per se. Instead, I began to teach pulse and function of beats and rhythms. The results have been dramatic, whether I am working with a piano student, voice student, or a chorus of any experience level. My main tool has been to have students feeling the large beat by making a purposeful full-arm or full-body motion; this helps them establish a sense of pulse as well as meter. Students' tendency to rush or drag the beat disappears when they do this activity and move in a purposeful motion as they speak the rhythm. It also seems to help students tap or pat the beat more purposefully than when I simply use the directive words "tap" or "pat." I have heard this activity informally referred to as patsching . The word itself, patsch , is pronounced pahch , and might be derived from the Yiddish words "patshen" or "patchl" which mean "smack or slap."

One such choreographer is Jeannie Hill. If you have attended any of Gus Giordano's Jazz Dance Congresses, no doubt you were impressed by the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, composed of Jeannie and founder Billy Siegenfeld. This bubbly duo has interpreted the classic strains of jazz composers like Ellington, Basie, Parker, and others in concert dances that explore the physical embodiment of jazz music, as well as excite and entertain their audience. Illinois State University was fortunate in recently having Jeannie Hill as a guest artist, teaching classes in classic jazz dance and choreographing the concert piece "Ya Dig?" So how does Hill educate her dancers about jazz dance? How does she start the process of getting them to look inside themselves for feeling, rather than assuming feeling? Her first method is to use jazz music. Real jazz music. Music that swings, with sections of improvisation. Then, rather than starting her class facing the mirror and delivering a series of commands for the dancers to execute, she simply has them "walk." Anywhere in the room, in any direction - but just walk in time to the jazz beat. Get used to this new feeling of rebound in the swing jazz beat that you may never have felt before. It found beats by looking at the difference between the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) of one time step and the next, then using them to generate repetitive control signals to make the robot "dance" to the music. The robot understood Underworld, and most other dance music with a strong beat, but couldn't quite get its moves down for Take 5 or Bach.
