Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!Greek dance is a very old tradition, being referred to by ancient authors such as Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch and Lucian. There are different styles and interpretations from all of the islands and surrounding mainland areas. Each region formed its own choreography and style to fit in with their own ways. For example, island dances have more of a "watery" flow to them, while Pontic dancing closer to Black Sea, is very sharp. There are over 4000 traditional dances that come from all regions of Greece. There are also Pan Hellenic dances, which have been adopted throughout the Greek world. These include the tsamiko, syrtos, and kalamatianos. Traditional Greek dancing has a primarily social function. It brings the community together at key points of the year, such as Easter, the grape harvest or patronal festivals; and at key points in the lives of individuals and families, such as weddings. ... Excerpt: Rebetiko, plural rebetika, (Greek and respectively), occasionally transliterated as Rembetiko, is a term used today to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek folk music which have come to be grouped together since the so-called rebetika revival, which started in the 1960s and developed further from the early 1970s onwards. The word rebetiko/rebetika is generally assumed to be an adjectival form derived from the Greek word rebetis (plural: rebetes) (gr. , plural: ). The word rebetis is nowadays construed to mean a person who embodies aspects of character, dress, behavior, morals and ethics associated with a particular subculture. The word is closely related, but not identical in meaning, to the word mangas (plural: manges) (gr. , plural ). The etymology of the word rebetis remains the subject of dispute and uncertainty; an early scholar of rebetiko, Elias Petropoulos, and the modern Greek lexicographer G. Babiniotis, both offer various suggested derivations, but leave the question open. Although nowadays treated as a single genre, rebetiko is, musically speaking, a synthesis of elements of European music, the music of the various areas of the Greek mainland and the Greek islands, Greek ecclesiastical chant, often referred to as Byzantine music, and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music. The melodies of most rebetiko songs are thus often considered to follow one or more dromos or dromoi (gr. , plural ). The names of the dromoi are derived in all but a few cases from the names of various Turkish modes, known in Turkish as makam. However, the majority of rebetiko songs have been accompanied by instruments capable of playing chords according to the Western harmonic...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1281835 ... Read more

Excerpt: Hyporchema , was a lively kind of mimic dance which accompanied the songs used in the worship of Apollo, especially among the Dorians. It was performed by men and women. (Athen. xiv. p. 631.) A chorus of singers at the festivals of Apollo usually danced around the altar, while several other persons were appointed to accompany the action of the song with an appropriate mimic performance . Hyporchema was thus a lyric dance, and often passed into the playful and comic, whence Athenaeus (xiv. p. 630, ... Read more

Excerpt:In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo (in Greek, Apólln or Apelln), is one of the most important and diverse of the Olympian deities. The ideal of the kouros (a beardless youth), Apollo has been variously recognized as a god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy; archery; medicine, healing and plague; music, poetry, and the arts; and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, and has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis. Apollo is known in Greek-influenced Etruscan mythology as Apulu. Apollo was worshiped in both ancient Greek and Roman religion, as well as in the modern GrecoRoman Neopaganism. As the patron of Delphi (Pythian Apollo), Apollo was an oracular godthe prophetic deity of the Delphic Oracle. Medicine and healing were associated with Apollo, whether through the god himself or mediated through his son Asclepius, yet Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague as well as one who had the ability to cure. Amongst the god's custodial charges, Ap...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=594 ... Read more
