A great resource
I was one of the unlucky folks who got a copy of version 4 with some missing parts. But I am still grateful that the author offers to make things right and send along the missing bits. Even without them, it is easy to learn by just going along in the book and following his exercises. He has even added additional online resources to make things clear for those who have difficulty. He shares some Hawaiian songs that would otherwise be lost ...like "Na Pipi Hiamoe" and adds in a couple of original compositions of his. Lastly, he has done all this while missing his left index finger!

After playing a few pieces of his from this book...it is an amazing thing: the notes just seem to pour out of the ukulele with pleasing resonances and a true Hawaiian sound that is impossible to get using other techniques. The style is laid back and easy with plenty of examples taken from the author's life.

In short, you won't be disappointed if you buy this book.

Comprehensive!!
This is probably the most comprehensive book regarding Slack Key for the ukulele.It starts out very basic and works it's way up to some pretty challenging things.The on line tutorials, while a great idea, are pretty low quality, the sound is horrible, I don't mind a homemade video and didn't expect production quality, but I would at least expect the sound to be understandable.The book itself is well thought out although it's kind of hard to follow at times.But spend enough time with it and you can usually figure out what to do.Considering that this is a real niche kind of thing to learn this is the book to learn from.What it lacks in polish and easy of understanding it makes up with content.

An almost comprehensive guide
I found D. Henry Wickham's book"Ukulele Design & Construction" a useful resource of ideas and construction tips for the building of the ukulele. I did not purchase this book as a stand alone guide to build the ukulele. I wanted to add to my library so as to further the options I had on building techniques and jig construction. I did find the book a bit deceiving in that on the back coverone could be led to believe that plans were included (as they should have been in my opinion)in the book. With out a plan included there are plenty of places one could be left hanging as to demensions and such. Overall I am glad I have the book in my library. JWS

Good information, but will need plans...
A good reference on the construction techniques for building a Ukulele but you will need to purchase plans and I also recommend a book on Guitar construction (eg J. Williams or Cumpiano & Natelson).

I found the tone of this book chatty rather than technical.Nonetheless it has a good exposition on the 2 different methods of building the neck - Spanish or Box Style - and it has an excellent section on the different Jigs you may need.

I'm pleased I purchased this book.It has certainly provided information regarding the build of my Ukulele but it doesn't act as a stand alone reference.

The plans stink
As you've probably realized from other reviews, the plans are not included with the book.Overall, if you've never built a string instrument, I'd say the book is pretty good for an advanced woodworker with some solid manufacturing engineering skills in fixtures/jigs and reading drawings. You'll need a planer, a thickness/drum sander, bench beltsander, and a bandsaw, and tablesaw, as well as an assortment of rasps. By the time you read through the book, you'll know what tools and materials you'd need.

The spelling and grammar mistakes lend some credibility that Wickham is a regular guy, probably voted for Palin, but the book does the job.I'd be embarrassed, but I guess he ain't got no time for no high falutin' grammar and spelling.

The plans, available through a number of luthier websites, aren't very well done. The two sides of the headstock aren't symmetrical, the overall length in the drawing is different from the printed dimension and the peg holes only are located in one dimension.For many measurements, you have to measure the drawing and take a guess.The overall length of the neck and fretboard aren't on the drawing and even though that's not that important (since the distance from bridge to nut is the critical measurement), it doesn't give that much confidence in his skills.

Overall, I think I'll be able to build a uke from this book and plans, but it's not going to be easy.I'm working through the whole neck shaping process in pine, and so far the book has had good instructions and troubleshooting. No way could I do it in "real" wood the first time.If you go for it, good luck...

Good info for a luthier
This was a birthday gift for my husband who is an amature luthier. He says this book was very helpful for getting his 1st Uke done right.
I scored a 100 for a good present (hard to do with him)

Good effort , but not for amateurs. This book was a giant disappointment, poorblack and white photos, erroneusinformation, andpoor explanation of jigs. Not enough detailed expalanations, especially for beginners.Many of the photos in this book were poorly done,Photos need tobe in clear color with detailed information.Lots of spelling mistakes, and incomplete words . Measurements , were way off. the author used guitarmakingmeasurements for top , back and sides.
