5-0 out of 5 stars Winnie Winston: Start your Pedal Steel Guitar Journey!!!
I've never loved the sound of an instrument quite as much as the Pedal Steel Guitar. It nearly defines Country Music since the 1950s, but WHO can actuall name a prominent Pedal Steel player? You know of Sneeky Pete Kleinow (recently deceased), or Lloyd Green, the steel players who made "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the Byrds the FIRST country-rock classic?By the way, the intro to "Nothing Was Delivered" was CUT from the CD, you have to find the LP to hear it, and it is "heaven's pedel steel defined" in my opinion.

Winnie's book (I met him a long time ago) was one of the very first mass books (with tape, now CD) that one could start to learn pedal steel guitar with, and as such, belongs in the music library of every country musician.Without Winnie Winston, there would be far fewer players today, plugging away far out of the limelight making "G-d's music" for the headliners of Music Row who owe to these musicians the lifting of souls behind their often sad and desperate lyrics.

Keep on steelin', and appreciate what a landmark this work is.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 TIME BUYER
This book helped me on my first pedal steel which I built from a kit in 1974. When I had worn out the record (and the book!) I bought it again several years later. Now in 2009, I am getting re-aquainted with the steel on an LDG I recently purchased, and I just had to have the CD version of this book. This book will NEVER die!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Steel Guitar "Bible"
This book has to be the most enduring publications for the pedal steel guitar ever written. The book came out in 1975. The book now comes with a CD instead of the former flimsy record. The book is legendary among a lot of pedal steel players, and I recommend it as a "first" book of instruction for any new player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied
The book arrived very quickly and in perfect condition just as advertised.I am very satisfied with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be your first Pedal steel book
Pedal steel guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments, but also one of the hardest to learn. This book helps you get started on a very complex instrument.I was amazed how quickly I was making good sounding music.I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out on pedal steel. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
In this book, Robert L. Stone follows the sound of steel guitar into the music-driven Pentecostal worship of two related churches: the House of God and the Church of the Living God. A rare outsider who has gained the trust of members and musicians inside the church, Stone uses nearly two decades of research, interviews, and fieldwork to tell the story of a vibrant musical tradition that straddles sacred and secular contexts. Most often identified with country and western bands, steel guitar is almost unheard of in African American churchesoexcept for the House of God and the Church of the Living God, where it has been part of worship since the 1930s. Sacred Steel traces the tradition through four generations of musicians and in some two hundred churches extending across the country from Florida to California, Michigan to Alabama. Presenting detailed portraits of musical pioneers such as brothers Troman and Willie Eason and contemporary masters such as Chuck Campbell, Glenn Lee, and Robert Randolph, Stone expertly outlines the fundamental tensions between sacred steel musicians and church hierarchy. Robert L. Stone is a folklorist, musician, and producer living in Florida. He has produced eight sacred steel albums for Arhoolie Records and directed the documentary video Sacred Steel for the Arhoolie Foundation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
My wife, a lap steel player, bought this book and I read it at her insistence. I'm glad she insisted. It is a fascinating read. It introduced me to an American music tradition of which I was really not aware, and I've been involved with Folk Music for most of my life. The book is highly informative and very well written. I would recommend it to anyone, the musical scholar, the folk community and the reader with only a casual interest in Americana. A great read! ... Read more

Product Description
This is a book about the politics of competing cultures and myths in a colonized nation. Elizabeth Buck considers the transformation of Hawaiian culture focusing on the indigenous population rather than on the colonizers. She describes how Hawaii's established religious, social, political, and economic relationships have changed in the past 200 years as a result of Western imperialism. Her account is particularly timely in light of the current Hawaiian demands for sovereignty 100 years after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Buck examines the social transformation Hawaii from a complex hierarchical, oral society to an American state dominated by corporate tourism and its myths of paradise. She pays particular attention to the ways contemporary Hawaiians are challenging the use of their traditions as the basis for exoticized entertainment. Buck demonstrates that sacred chants and hula were an integral part of Hawaiian social life; as the repository of the people's historical memory, chants and hula practices played a vital role in maintaining the links between religious, political, and economic relationships.Tracing the ways in which Hawaiian culture has been variously suppressed and constructed by Western explorers, New England missionaries, the tourist industry, ethnomusicologists, and contemporary Hawaiians, Buck offers a fascinating 'rereading' of Hawaiian history. Author Elizabeth Buck is a Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i. ... Read more
