Excerpt: Catherine de' Medici's patronage of the arts made a significant contribution to the French Renaissance. Catherine was inspired by the example of her father-in-law, King Francis I of France (reigned 15151547), who had hosted the leading artists of Europe at his court. As a young woman, she witnessed at first hand the artistic flowering stimulated by his patronage. As governor and regent of France, Catherine set out to imitate Francis's politics of magnificence. In an age of civil war and declining respect for the monarchy, she sought to bolster royal prestige through lavish cultural display. After the death of her husband, Henry II, in 1559, Catherine governed France on behalf of her young sons King Francis II (155960) and King Charles IX (156074). Once in control of the royal purse, she launched a program of artistic patronage which lasted for three decades. She continued to employ Italian artists and performers, including the artist-architect Primaticcio. By the 1560s, however, a wave of home-grown talenttrained and influenced by the foreign masters brought to France by Franciscame to the fore. Catherine patronised these new artists and presided over a distinctive late French-Renaissance culture. New forms emerged in literature, architecture, and the performing arts. At the same time, as art historian Alexandra Zvereva suggests, Catherine became one of the great art collectors of the Renaissance. Although Catherine spent ruinous sums on the arts, the majority of her patronage had no lasting effect. The end of the Valois dynasty shortly after her death brought a change in priorities. Her collections were dispersed, her palaces sold, and her buildings were...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16526673 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Historical dance is a collective term covering a wide variety of dance types from the past as they are danced in the present. Dances from the early 20th century can be recreated precisely, being within living memory and from the age of film and video recording. However, earlier dance types must be reconstructed from evidence such as surviving notations and instruction manuals. Historical dances may be danced as performance, for pleasure at themed balls or dance clubs, as historical reenactment, or for musicological or historical research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER HEROINE BITS THE DUST
DANCE WITH THE DEVIL -- an adventure Libby Hawkins expected to live takes her to the New Mexican Territory far from her destination of Santa Angela and her sister.

Natural quirks of fate end up making her a legend called "Spirit Woman" with her flaming hair and golden skin. She loused up the Comanche's good medicine and engaged the attentions of "El Aguila", leader of the comancheros.

Mando Fierro used the Indians to reek vengance on the gringos who were invading his territory. In the meantime, he sought to capture and seduce the sister of the woman who destroyed his relationship with his brother, Ross.He would return the "Spirit Woman" to her sister in humilation and degradation.

The story of her trek acrossed the wild land with "El Aguila" and the Frenchman, Louis, her attempted escapes and failures, and her unprecedented rescue of the two make for a wild and fascinating read.

Mando is demanding all from and offering nothing to Libby. And she realizes that she must obtain all or nothing from Mando. How can she bring this about?

Here I was expecting a lot from this little lady but like all the rest she falls victim to her hormones with the silly excuse that this maybe all she gets.

Ah well, still a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED entertaining story and a keeper. ... Read more

Product Description
A comprehensive history of the quintessential American dance troupe and a textured portrait of Robert Joffrey, the creative maverick who led and inspired it, this broadly researched, richly anecdotal, and elegantly written book probes the complex relationship that exists between a culture and its artisans through the prism of this company's story. 44 halftones.Amazon.com Review
Robert Joffrey took ballet from its lofty and ofteninaccessible perch and helped popularize it to a broad audience without once compromising the level of its art. His company wasmetamorphic, infusing its performances with both tradition andinnovation, seriousness and wit, and highbrow and lowbrow, producing much of this century's most memorable dance. Anawalt'sbiography not only elegantly describes how the company developed buthow it helped shape American dance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An engrossing history of a most important American dance co.
A fascinating, incredibly well-researched history of the Joffrey Ballet -- and its place in American dance. I myself had worked as an intern backstage there when I was younger, and I must say it really captured the company's spirit and the personalities of the major players, such as Mr. Joffrey and Gerald Arpino.Answalt has a knack for presenting the complexities of running a dance company in the US and for fairly examining the disputes between artists and board members that nearly destroyed the Joffrey. If I have any quibble at all, and it is small, it is that from time to time certain events are a little rushed and merit more detail. But that's a small problem, indeed. ... Product Description
"The Historical Epic in Contemporary Hollywood" seeks to document and explain a recent revival of historical epic films in Hollywood. Rather than relying on abstract theoretical approaches, James Russell employs empirical historical techniques to explore how industrial conditions and the agendas of key directors, writers and producers led to the increased production of historical epics such as "Dances With Wolves" (1990), "Titanic" (1997), "Gladiator" (2000) and "The Passion of the Christ" (2004). The book begins by exploring the careers of filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Mel Gibson during the 1990s. Russell looks in detail at their agendas, the production of their films and at the content of the films themselves. As the book progresses, he goes on to address the activities of the major studios, in terms of production and marketing, and looks at changing industrial conditions, such as the emergence of DVD. Finally, Russell examines social trends, particularly increasing levels of religious commitment and political division in America."The Historical Epic in Contemporary Hollywood", which has been thoroughly researched in archival collections in Los Angeles and New York, deliberately focuses on the activities of individuals working in the Hollywood film industry the result is an original and interesting account of the ways that contemporary epic films get made, and speak to modern audiences. Ultimately, the book argues that historical epics reappeared in the 1990s partly as a result of changing industrial conditions, but mainly because a generation of filmmakers, all born during the so-called 'baby boom,' began to seek out meaningful ways of passing on historical knowledge to younger generations as they grew older. The epics released in the 1950s and 1960s, when Spielberg, Cameron, et al were children, constitute a key reference point in this process of renewal and reinvention in Hollywood. ... Read more
