4-0 out of 5 stars Godsend
We do the annual 5 de Mayo celebration and our candidates for queen usually do a folkloric dance number as part of the pageant. This year our instructor broke her foot and I had to step in and teach the girls a dance. This book was a godsend. The steps are easy and I am sure they will look great on stage.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mexican Folk Dances (World Dance Series)
Explaining the dances could be a little more detailed. Perhaps a slower tempo of each song with a cue as to when to start after the intoduction, ques for turning, etc. A dvd video of someone performing the dance would be an excellent additionto the package! Otherwise, my students and I made it work.. and have benefitted from the book, dance and music. ... Read more

Product Description

The Ghost Dance religion that swept through the Plains Indian tribes in the early 1890s was embraced wholeheartedly by the Pawnees. It was a message of hope to a people devastated by the attacks of enemy tribes, the encroachment of white settlers, and the outbreak of epidemics. For the Pawnees, who were looking to the U.S. government and trying unsuccessfully to farm their land, the Ghost Dance movement promised salvation: a restoration of the Indian dead, the buffalo, and the old times.

Alexander Lesser shows how the Ghost Dance brought about a partial revival of traditional Pawnee culture and its dances and songs. The ancient guessing hand game, remembered best by a tribe starved for the joy of play, became an important part of the Ghost Dance ritual. What had been a gambling game, a representation of warfare played by men, was transformed into a sacred game played by both sexes as an expression of faith or “good fortune.”

Lesser surveys the history of the Pawnee Indians and their relations with the federal government and describes in detail the Ghost Dance hand games that “were the chief intellectual product of Pawnee culture” from the onset of the messianic movement to the original publication of this book in 1933. Citing such authorities as James Mooney and Stewart Culin, Lesser produced an enduring classic, now introduced by Alice Beck Kehoe, a professor of anthropology at Marquette University and the author of The Ghost Dance: Ethnohistory and Revitalization.

Product Description
The world renowned, American epic Dances With Wolves is the eternal story of one man's search for his place in the world.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical and unpredictable journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it's gone".

His posting to a desolate and deserted outpost is the springboard for contact with the lords of the southern plains...the Comanches.

Though he does not speak their language, has no knowledge of their customs and is considered a trespasser, Lieutenant Dunbar finds himself intrigued by the exotic and alien culture of the buffalo-hunting people of the plains.

A simple desire to know more about his wild neighbors ignites a great adventure of transformation that culminates with the emergence of a different kind of man...a man called Dances With Wolves.

Dances With Wolves has appeared in hardcover only once in the United States. That edition has been out of print for more than ten years.

Hrymfaxe is proud to bring this timeless and beloved story to hardcover once again, availing readers, old and new, of an opportunity to give the saga Dances With Wolves the treasured place of permanence it deserves in personal libraries everywhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dances with Wolves, very good
I requested Dances with Wolves because I wanted to see how the author originally developed the story line. The book was just like the movie with a few extra details. It explained some aspects of the movie that, while interesting, would not have added greatly to the enjoyment of the film.Overall I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to others that like western stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me want to become a Comanche.
If you enjoyed the novels by Jack London (including Call of the Wild and White Fang) or the motion picture, The Last Samurai, then you will love this novel.Based at the end of the civil war, the story is told from the point of view of Lieutenant John Dunbar. The story is about the transformation of a man as he transitions from the cold industrial world of the whites to the wild, uninhibited world of the Comanche Indians. The writing is rich, full of detail and meaning, accompanied with plenty of action and journal entries to add a noticeable aspect to the Lieutenant's transformation. I was sad to put this book down; it is clear why a movie was made based on this literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE BEST MOVIE EVER BASED ON THIS BOOK
What more needs to be said huh? When you watch the movie, as the music kicks in, you are transported not just in mind but also in body to a place that none of us were able to see first hand. The way the Indians (excuse me, I meant Native Americans although Clovis People are the real Natives, but that's another topic for another day) are portrayed as the good guys and the whites as the bad guys truly hits home.
The best of the best include Dances with Wolves, Lord of the Rings, Gone with the Wind. If stranded on an island, those are the three titles and movies I would want with me. I suppose you can add Raiders of the Lost Ark to this list as well as Star Wars. Combined, what is that like 100 Oscars between all those movies.

I have not yet read the book but I will as soon as I get through my other 50 or so books I have bought in the last 6 months. The thing of it is, what really drives Dances w/Wolves is the music in the movie. It just makes your heart swell with hope that one day true love may find us.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is better, in my opinion.
A friend recently gave me a copy of the "Dances With Wolves" movie (one of my favorites since seeing it years ago) and the book which I had never read. After a repeat viewing of the movie, I read the book.

The main reason I normally prefer the book versions of a story is that one gets to know the thoughts and feelings of the main characters that embellish each scene and are actually sometimes needed to understand the full scope.

This reason especially applies in the case of "Dances With Wolves," written by Michael Blake. The main character is alone with only his horse, the infrequent visits of a lone wolf and his brief journalized thoughts for company until his company includes a nearby camp of Indians. As the beautiful and memorable story transpires amidst a language barrier, one is privy to a richness of behind-the-scenes depth the movie version is limited in presenting.

There are a few variations between the movie and the book, including the ending (and I prefer the ending of the book), but if you liked the movie, you will love the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie
I saw the movie only once and it was good, but this book was way better! I can't wait to read Holy road. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars View to My Soul
This book was the beginning of a new life and lifestyle for me.
After learning that I am of Blackfoot decent I began learning as much as I can about my heritage. After reading this book, I learned what the regalia means and the blood, sweat and tears and heart and soul that goes into them. They are full of history and wonder. My daughter will one day dance for our ancestors and I am learning beadwork for just such an occasion."Within my heart there are two peoples, some red some black...to love, respect and honor them is all I have to give back".

Product Description
The intertribal pow-wow is the most widespread venue for traditional Indian music and dance in North America. Heartbeat of the People is an insider's journey through the dances and music, the traditions and regalia, and into the functions and significance of these vital cultural events.Tara Browner comes to the pow-wow as a participant--she is a dancer of Oklahoma Choctaw heritage--as well as a scholar. Focusing on the Northern pow-wow, which derives from the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes region, Browner presents an in-depth discussion of the pow-wow's roots and traditions, protocols, and order of events. She also describes footwork, styles of singing, and the diversity of participants' regalia. Browner centers her discussion of the Northern-style pow-wow around the Lakota Sacred Hoop and the Anishnaabeg Sacred Fire.Browner traces the history of specific events such as the Grass and Jingle Dress dances and distinguishes among various dance types, including Traditional, Fancy, and "special" exhibition dances as well as ceremonial honor dances, giveaways, and memorials. She also discusses women's changing roles within pow-wow performance and thoughtfully examines how continually changing musical repertories, dance styles and regalia, and customs foster a vibrant state of transformation that coexists, often uneasily, with more traditional Native mores. She closes her study with a series of interviews with members of two families of pow-wow dancers, one Lakota and one Anishnaabeg. Marked by meticulous scholarship and firmly grounded in Browner's extensive experience as a pow-wow participant and observer, Heartbeat of the People is a unique and powerful celebration of the vibrancy, continuity, and evolution of an ancient music and dance tradition. ... This is a good introduction to the Crow sundance, and commemorates the 50th anniversary of this religious practice among the Crow people, once banned by federal law.It has quite a few pictures, and makes an excellent companion volume to the more detailed work "Yellowtail: Crow Medicine Man and Sun Dance Chief", which is much heavier on history, and is more biography of Tom Yellowtail. ...
