Product Description
What was this Morris tradition, entertainment, mystical rite, or some hybrid of the two? Where did it come from? After thirty years of dancing, teaching, and research, John Cutting attempts to answer these questions. From the earliest known references (1137 in Spain, 1448 in England) to the middle of the nineteenth century, Morris events are listed and examined. A parallel study looks at publications about Morris, from the Puritans down to the present day. Many illustrations portraying Morris or possible Morris dancers from the fourteenth century onwards are reproduced in the text. ... Read more

Product Description
From the Inside Cover: It is a Monday in late May. Six men form up in two lines of three facing a musician, odd numbers on the left, even on the right. They are all dressed neatly in white with rosettes or favors and ribbons pinned to their shirts and a cluster of small brass bells on a leather pad is fixed to each shin. Just before the musician strikes up the tune, a dubious-looking character steps forward to address the assembled crowd. He wears a clown suit, has his face painted somewhat crudely with red and green make-up, and swings a dried pig's bladded attached by a short string to the end of a stick. "Here we be, masters," he declares, "six fools and," pointing to himself, "one dancer!" To understand this characterization of the Morris is to know the quality without a name. To be able to learn from it is to follow the timeless way of Morris dancing and use its pattern language. If this book serves as a gate to the timeless way for any dancer, musician, spectator, or teacher it will have fulfilled its purpose. ... Read more

Excerpt: A morris dance is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, handkerchiefs and bells may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. Claims that English records, dating back to 1448, mention the morris dance are open to dispute. There is no mention of "morris" dancing earlier than the late 15th century, although early records such as Bishops' "Visitation Articles" mention sword dancing, guising and other dancing activities as well as mumming plays. Furthermore, the earliest records invariably mention "Morys" in a court setting, and both men and women are mentioned as dancing, and a little later in the Lord Mayors' Processions in London. It is only later that it begins to be mentioned as something performed in the parishes. There is certainly no evidence that it is a pre-Christian ritual, as is often claimed. In the modern day, it is commonly thought of as a uniquely English activity, although there are around 150 morris sides (or teams) in the United States. Bri...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=52691 ...
