Description:
This paper describes dance/movement therapy (DMT) with children ages 5-8 on a short-term inpatient psychiatric unit in a major teaching hospital. The authors contend that DMT is a valuable treatment modality for creating cohesion in groups of children who have previously been chaotic and disorganized. They also contend that this sense of cohesion provides support, and a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere in which the children are able to work toward attaining therapeutic goals. The development of body image, self-awareness, and awareness of others are important components of DMT sessions described in this paper, and serve as the foundation upon which cohesion is built. To illustrate the effectiveness of DMT in promoting group cohesion, a specific session is described. Changes in behavior that were observed in the group, and on the unit, included improved impulse control, frustration tolerance, gratification delay, and ability to get along with others. ... Excerpt: Dance therapy, or dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance for emotional, cognitive, social, behavioral and physical conditions. Dance movement therapy strengthens the body/mind connection through body movements to improve both the mental and physical well-being of individuals. As a form of expressive therapy, DMT is founded on the basis that movement and emotion are directly related. The ultimate purpose of DMT is to find a healthy balance and sense of wholeness. Since its birth in the 1940s, DMT has gained much popularity and has been taken to more serious and beneficial levels. Over the years, the practices of DMT have progressed, however, the main principles that founded this form of therapy have remained the same. Influenced by the "main principles" of this therapy, most DMT sessions are configured around four main stages: preparation, incubation, illumination, and evaluation. Organizations such as the American Dance Therapy Association and the Association for Dance Movement Therapy, United Kingdom maintain the high standards of profession and education throughout the field. DMT is practiced in places such as mental health rehabilitation centers, medical and educational settings, nursing homes, day care facilities, and other health promotion programs. This form of therapy which is taught in a wide array of locations goes farther than just centering the body. Specialized treatments of DMT can help cure and aid many types of diseases and disabilities. Other common names for DMT include: movement psychotherapy and dance therapy. Description:
The recent discovery by neuroscientists of mirror neurons has launched a spate of scientific investigations. A keystone of the therapeutic process of dance/movement therapy (D/MT), the concept of mirroring is now the subject of neuroscience. An interactive phenomenon, studies are revealing that the identical sets of neurons can be activated in an individual who is simply witnessing another person performing a movement as the one actually engaged in the action or the expression of some emotion or behavior. The domains of behavior currently under investigation span motoric, psychosocial and cognitive functions, including specific psychosocial issues related to attunement, attachment theory and empathy. Although D/MT embodies empathic forms, until recently their neurological underpinnings have not been studied. The paper addresses the theoretical constructs of the mirror matching mechanism and empathy, and the implications for D/MT. Beginning with the basic mapping of important central nervous system structures and their behavioral functions, the focus shifts to the mirror neurons with respect to the formative years vis-a-vis the developmental issues of empathy-attachment, attunement, social cognition and morality. The final section offers two exemplars of mirror neurons and empathy as mediated through dance and D/MT. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dance Dance Revolution, abbreviated DDR, and previously known as Dancing Stage in Europe and Australasia, is a music video game series produced by Konami. Introduced in Japan in 1998 as part of the Bemani series, and released in North America and Europe in 1999, Dance Dance Revolution is the pioneering series of the rhythm and dance genre in video games. Players stand on a "dance platform" or stage and hit colored arrows laid out in a cross with their feet to musical and visual cues. Players are judged by how well they time their dance to the patterns presented to them and are allowed to choose more music to play to if they receive a passing score. Dance Dance Revolution has been given much critical acclaim for its originality and stamina in the video game market. There have been dozens of arcade-based releases across several countries and hundreds of home video game console releases. The series has promoted a music library of original songs produced by Konami's in-house artists and an eclectic set of licensed music from many different genres. The series has also inspired many clones of its gameplay and a global fan base of millions that have created simulators of the game to which they contribute original music and "simfiles", collections of dance patterns to a specific song. DDR celebrated its 10th anniversary on November 21, 2008. The dance...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9010 ... Read more

Description:
This study evaluates if verbally oriented scales are as effective as the visual instruments of self-figure drawing and video interpretation in detecting treatment responses after 6 months of dance/movement therapy in fibromyalgia patients. The self-figure drawing and video interpretation technique captured treatment effects that were not seen on verbal scales. In the self-figure drawings, significant differences were seen in the variables ''amount of body details'' and ''amount of paper use in percent'' between the treatment group and controls after dance/movement therapy. The treatment group showed a significant increase in the ''amount of body details'' and ''amount of paper use in percent'' compared to controls. Specific parts of the verbally oriented ratings in CPRS, ''bodily discomfort'' and ''compulsive act,'' were positively correlated to ''number of different colours.'' The variable ''pain and ache'' in the CPRS indicated a negative correlation to the ''amount of paper use in percent,'' i.e. the more pain, the less paper used. The use of different assessment techniques may affect the treatment outcome and verbal instrumentation may not be the most appropriate in this patient group. Difficulties perceiving information through verbal/cognitive modalities as well as alexithymia are factors that are discussed. d. ... Read more
