Product Description
The book is the most comprehensive account of the phonology of Danish ever published in any language. It gives a clear analysis of the sound patterns of modern Danish and examines the relations between its speech sounds and grammar. The author develops new models for the analysis of phonology and morphology-phonology interactions, and shows how these may be applied to Danish and to other languages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An elementary Grammar and Reader
Very helpful book and in great condition.Would buy again from them again.Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for "ordinary" students
This book was revised in 1958 and is still reprinted without any revision.
Does it mean this is an excellent book?I don't think so.This not-inexpensive book might dispappoint many students of Danish, because

1. There are no conversation sections except "special idioms" witha list of 10 greetings, 14 expressions of thanks, and 10 polite expressions.
2. There are no answers to the exercises and texts for compositions.
3. There are no Danish-English vocabulary lists.
4. There are no translations to the reading passages;three of them are from folklore, and the other 17 proses and 5 poems are from writers of the 19th and early 20th century. Only classic.
5. In the composition section, you must translate approximately 100-word passages about a lady who had her small black bag snatched by an approaching thief; Xerexes, who resolved to make war against the Greeks; a tiger and a gladiator in the arena and so on. It also contains 10 examination papers (from 1947 to 1951) at University of London and Cambridge University. If you should translate them, you can't judge whether they are correct or not. There are no model answers you can refer to!

This book may be good as a textbook for college students or as a reader forself-taught students who like to read literary work by consulting a dictionary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent classical approach to language learning
Unusually clear explanations of grammar and usage. Many, manygood exercise. Abundant practice reading texts. Highly recommended. ... Read more

From cosmopolitan Copenhagen to Denmark's coastal villages, you'll converse easily, intelligibly, and comfortably with native speakers. Perfect forboth business travelers and vacationers, this easy-to-use, color-coded book contains the phrases you need to communicate with confidence and travel with ease. The Berlitz phrase book is the unparalleled market leader in its category. Amazon.com Review
The Berlitz cassette pack with phrase book series comes inseveral languages, including some harder-to-find language programslike Thai and Hebrew. The series lives up to its claim of lettinglisteners hear the language "as it's really spoken"--which means fastand slightly indecipherable, just like being in a foreign country andnot knowing the language. For anyone who's learned the hard way thattrying to understand the local language is nothing like high schoollanguage class, that's a real blessing. But true beginners maystruggle to memorize the longish phrases like "I want something justlike that, only smaller and cheaper."The 90-minute cassette comeswith a color-coded phrasebook containing over 400 essentialexpressions, plus travel tips, dictionary, and a pronunciation guidethat reads like another foreign language altogether. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
I found the variety of situations on the tape very useful.Pronunciation is always the hardest part of Danish. As an aid to my learning, I just kept this on in the background while I cleaned the house, etc. and it wasvery helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unless you are good at Audio Cassette Learning Don't bother
If you need the personal interaction to learn a language, this is not for you.The tape pretty much speaks a useful phrase and then translates it and you are expected to repeat, remember and use it.Rather difficult torecreate the sounds of native speakers as a beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I've never been a History buff--but I play bridge with this man and heard he'd been in the Danish Resistance in World War II.

I'd also heard the book was good, so I checked it out of the library. It wasn't just good--it was FANTASTIC. Not only a beautifully written "guided tour" of the Danish culture, he innovately set up each Chapter to talk about what he was doing AND at the end was a little blerb about what Hitler was doing.

I got to watch the rise and Fall of the Third Reich through the eyes of aman who actually lived it a few miles from the German Border. Good lord! I felt transported to a very scary and difficult time.

AN EXCELLENT READ!

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging, insightful look into the Danish Resistance
This work provides a unique look at the individuals involved in the Danish Resistance Movement during World War II.Most other works on the subject describe either the resistance as a whole or a few more public figures, but Skov describes the life and feelings of an individual trying to "put a prick in the German wehrmacht."His perspective is valuable, and he presents his narrative with insightful discussion on both the war and human nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding First Person History
I was fortunate to have Niels Skov as a professor and as an academic advisor some 20 years ago. When I learned he had written a book, I knew it would be well worth reading.

This is as good as it gets in first personhistory. An honest and direct account with no particular axes to grind.Ifound the book hard to put down.Niels has included a wealth of finedetail on day-to-day life in the 30's and during the war, which makes hisexperiences very real, sometimes chillingly so.

4-0 out of 5 stars We are all Dr. Skov's descendents.
I had the honor of taking a class from Dr. Skov, on "The Experience of War in 20th Century Europe"."Letter to my Descendents" was one of our texts.

I'll admit, there are memoirs of resistanceactivities that I consider to be more interesting and better written. However, Skov's biting, dark sense of humor, combined with his unassumingsense of arrogance, make for a unique read.

For me, "Letter"drives home the fact that each and every one of us is capable ofresistance. The question is, will be accept this in ourselves?

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, revealing and personal view of the resistance
I consider it an honor to have grown up with Dr. Skov's youngest child. Having known this gentle man my entire life, I knew that he had been involved in the war in some way but to finally read his words have given mea much greater respect for him as a person, as a father and as a teacher. Icannot relate what he is like to know, but to read of his trials during thewar and his acceptance of sacrifice against terrible odds, we all becomehis descendants in part. My words don't do his justice, just read the bookand be enriched by the experience. thank you Niels! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This collection of papers offers an alternative to mainstream functional linguistics on two points. Especially American lingusitics, function and structure is often understood as being only a matter of linguistic form - or expression - as opposed to content. The book tries to illustrate why function and structure must be understood as mutually dependent on relation to language - and why the most interesting aspect of language structure is the way it structures the content side of language. In this, the book represents a reaffirmation of traditional concerns in structural linguistics, especially with respect to the structural integrity of individual languages - but with a reversal of traditional priority: structure is not autonomous, but must be understood on the basis of function. Without being hostile to typological and universal generalizations, the articles suggest that similarities between languages can only be discussed on the basis of an understanding that includes a respect for language differences. ...
