Product Description
This work contains two smaller related works. In the Lost Senses: Deafness, the author, having become deaf at the age of twelve, pens this book as a record of his experience. It is not his intention to refer to the events or studies of his life, but to use them to bring out the points and peculiarities of the deaf condition. He selects only those events which arise from, which illustrate, or which are in any remarkable way connected with his deafness. Also found in this volume is the Lost Senses: Blindness. In this book, Mr. Kitto compares deafness to blindness. He includes some notable deaf and blind persons, discussing how they have overcome the loss of their sight and hearing. Also found within are several famous musicians, poets, divines, philosophers and travelers, all of which are incredible blind figures in our history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All you wanted to know what's like to be a deaf person, look no further than this book.
I can't believe it...Roy K. Holcomb just finally and perfectly explained what it is like to be a deaf person in Hazard of Deafness. Although amusing, everything stated in the book is so painfully true. I should know because I went through most of them in one degree or another. Based on my experiences, I want to add more to the book:

663. "Never mind" is a phrase you hear very often from hearing people.

664. When a hearing person says something before you look at his face, a long pause occurs before you say, "What did you say?"

665. "I am deaf. I can't hear. What did you say?"

666. Often, the hearing person will stare at you while he absorbs the fact that you can't hear anything before he starts saying something in a minute.

667. When you call a somebody selling you a product or a service through TTY, the operator explains the relay call, and the person hangs up on you. Again, you dial the number, the operator explains the relay call, and the person hangs up on you. Again, you dial the number, the operator explains the relay call, and the person hangs up on you. Again, you dial the number, the operator explains the relay call, and the person hangs up on you. Again, you dial the number, the operator explains the relay call, and the person hangs up on you. Finally, you are frustrated and will need a hearing person to make the call for you. The ironic thing is that you are trying to buy something or pay for service from this person while this person is selling you the same.

668. When you walk to a room, everybody is looking at you. You immediately know that it's your hearing aids that have been beeping a lot.

669. You have no idea how loud your voice is. Then again, you should be lucky enough to talk.

670. When you are little, everybody wanted to play. At a certain age, nobody wants to play anymore, and they decide to talk. You are disappointed and decide to play by yourself.

671. Being oral and not sign dependent, you are always at loss when it comes to information through voice. So you work twice harder than anyone by going to the library and reading books on whatever you missed out on.

672. You hate going to relatives' house because you will end up sitting on a chair and doing nothing for hours since it's going to be all talk.

673. Discrimination occurs at a fast food restaurant because you can't use the drive-in window due to the failure of working with the intercom.

674. You are usually the most uninformed person. Years later, when you find out, you will be wishing that you knew that a long ago.

675. During closed captions, you will get [speaking Spanish] but never the specific words of the language.

676. In class, you are often in trouble for disturbing the peace by making too much noise. Then again, it's all unintentional.

677. You are always making sure to prevent any embarrassing situations after they occur.

678. You develop a natural instinct of knowing when things just suddenly don't feel right.

679. To get the attention of another deaf, you either do the "wolf" call or throw something if you can't use the light.

680. Imagine playing on a deaf soccer team and one deaf is focusing on the ball while dribbling. And you are desperately trying to get his attention so he can pass the ball to you.

681. Nobody takes you seriously no matter what you say.

682. No matter how great you are at writing, you are only able to pronounce simple words in a sentence.

683. When somebody comes to the door, the dog will let you know. If you don't have a dog, then don't worry about it.

684. You learn by watching but never by listening to words.

685. You apply for many jobs, but nobody hires you.

686. You end up collecting SSI because you can't get a job that pays a lot better than SSI.

687. For SSI and Medicaid appointments, you are always stuck in the lobby for hours.

688. For SSI and Medicaid appointments, you are always filling out paperwork for hours.

687. For SSI and Medicaid, you are always filling out papers for hours when somebody screws up your information.

688. No matter what, you are always pushed over.

689. No matter what, you can't win.

690. No matter what, you don't have the money to sue or do anything about it.

691. The companies would rather hire a hearing person than you to save the trouble.

692. GA can mean two things to you.

693. During childhood, you are always taken advantage by your hearing friends because that's the only way to be friends with them.

694. If you are oral and not sign dependent, a deaf person using sign language is very foreign to you.

675. During closed captions, you will get [singing "Baby Baby"] but never the specific words of the lyrics.

All in all, Hazard of Deafness is a great book that will depress you! And I love it. ... Read more
